00:02 - Hey, Jeff Garlin, it's Men's Health.
00:04 Here to see your gym and fridge.
00:06 - Men's Health Magazine?
00:09 What are you doing here?
00:11 (bell dings)
00:13 All right, come on in.
00:16 (upbeat music)
00:28 Hello, I see you, I acknowledge you, I connect with you.
00:33 - All right, let's see that fridge.
00:37 - I'm gonna open both sides and look at this world.
00:41 Look at that world.
00:42 - That's a mighty healthy fridge.
00:44 - First off, what is this?
00:47 This is dog food that's old.
00:50 I just, that should not be in there.
00:51 Let's go around.
00:53 You got the little carrots with the hummus.
00:56 I actually like this.
00:58 Weird, I know.
00:59 Vegetable soup from Chinese food from a night ago.
01:02 I can still, good, I can have this.
01:04 You know, organic girl, what's great,
01:06 it's washed three times.
01:07 If it's washed twice, don't eat it.
01:09 But if they go three times, go nuts!
01:12 I have my Beyond Burger, turkey breast,
01:15 peanut and almond butter, crunchy almond butter,
01:18 and my apples.
01:19 Look at that drawer!
01:22 All organic Fuji apples!
01:24 - Now let's see the freezer.
01:27 - So freezer-wise, you know, I got some keto stuff,
01:31 some of the meats and frozen vegetables.
01:34 I eat a lot of the Ezekiel bread, flourless bread,
01:38 low in sodium.
01:39 This is my one sort of bread thing.
01:43 - What's an absolute must-have in your fridge?
01:45 - Here's my favorite thing in the whole refrigerator.
01:49 This is the thing that saves my life.
01:51 It's whole milk cottage cheese, colonna.
01:54 I can have this for breakfast, I can have this for a snack.
01:57 You take off the plastic, there's a little bit of like milk
02:01 and I drink it before I start.
02:03 I don't know why I shared that with you, but I do.
02:06 And I love it, so this is my favorite.
02:07 When you're getting your most excitement
02:10 from cottage cheese, really, do you know what I mean?
02:13 I might as well be in an old person's home.
02:15 That is my favorite thing, is cottage cheese
02:18 with wasa bread?
02:19 Come on, but here's the thing.
02:21 I have learned about food combining,
02:24 making sure that I have plenty of vegetables
02:28 with my protein.
02:29 And if I have fruit, it's an apple,
02:31 it's blueberries, blackberries.
02:34 As much as I'd love to, I cannot eat watermelon anymore.
02:37 I can't eat bananas.
02:39 So I lost all my weight from just being a boring eater.
02:43 - What are your go-to meals?
02:45 - For me, a perfect dinner is literally
02:49 a very minimal ham type thing.
02:52 Cook these (beep) up, excuse my language,
02:55 and have a salad, put 'em on top of the salad,
02:58 a little bit of thousand island, boom.
03:00 Good night, ladies and gentlemen.
03:01 Dinner, done.
03:02 One of my big breakfasts is, here, I'll show you.
03:06 I'll have the steel cut oats, which I love.
03:09 I have to measure it exactly, not 'cause I'm on a diet,
03:12 but because of the carbohydrates
03:15 and being a diabetic, I have to.
03:17 I put cinnamon in this, I put flaxseed in this,
03:20 and then I cook up some egg whites,
03:23 and I put the scrambled egg whites in my oatmeal,
03:26 mix it up, delightful.
03:29 - What's your cheat day look like?
03:31 - I have no cheat days.
03:33 I have no cheat days.
03:34 For me, it's about being sober and not sober.
03:37 Sober when I'm eating correctly
03:39 and not eating sugary stuff.
03:41 And then if I have a candy bar or I have ice cream,
03:44 I'm basically not sober.
03:46 Do I occasionally have pizza?
03:48 Yes, yeah, I do.
03:50 I also did not get fat from eating pizza.
03:53 My problem is the sugars.
03:56 I used to sit outside the left field,
03:58 Ft. Reedy Field, there was a 7-Eleven
04:01 on the corner of Hennison and Sheffield,
04:03 and I would get a pint of ice cream,
04:05 Fruity Pebbles, Pop-Tarts, Ho-Hos,
04:09 and I would eat all this crap and go,
04:11 "Well, what a great memory
04:13 "to have the last time I ate crap."
04:15 Instead, I would do it over and over and over and over again
04:20 and that's how I developed diabetes,
04:23 from abusing my body for too many years.
04:27 Comedy saved me from being an alcoholic
04:29 'cause I stopped drinking when I was 20.
04:31 But I didn't prepare myself for eating Boston cream pie
04:34 at three o'clock in the morning with other comedians
04:37 and I blew up.
04:38 But now I'm feeling great.
04:40 - What's your snack strategy?
04:41 - I eat five times a day.
04:43 It might be a diabetes shake.
04:44 I have a powder that I put in with oat milk.
04:47 Sometimes today for energy,
04:49 I actually have that diabetes protein powder with coffee.
04:54 In the afternoon, it might be the peanut butter.
04:56 It might be the carrots with the hummus.
04:58 It might be the soup as a snack,
05:00 or that might be my dinner.
05:01 I don't know.
05:02 When I say I don't know,
05:03 it's because all the things I need are here.
05:06 There is not anything that will send me down the wrong path.
05:10 - What would we never find in your fridge?
05:12 - I'll tell you the number one thing
05:14 you would never see in my fridge.
05:16 Number one, pudding.
05:18 Oh, what I wouldn't do to be able to have
05:21 cozy sheck pudding every day in my refrigerator.
05:24 The joy that cozy sheck has brought me.
05:27 Oh my God.
05:28 But you're not gonna find it in my refrigerator.
05:31 - Apart from the cheese juice,
05:34 what are your other favorite drinks?
05:36 - Here's my favorite, Spindrift.
05:38 Yellow, sparkling yellow.
05:40 It's, well, it's yellow with the blue.
05:42 It's lemon, yellow.
05:44 I meant to say lemon.
05:45 Groundworks makes some delicious cold brew,
05:48 but my favorite, Bitches Brew, is my favorite flavor.
05:53 I have one to two a day.
05:54 Bitches Brew, by the way, is a great Miles Davis album.
05:56 Just let them know.
05:57 - Thanks for showing us your fridge.
05:59 Shall we go out to the gym?
06:00 (upbeat music)
06:03 Do you have a training partner?
06:05 - This is Peter Lee Thomas.
06:07 He is my trainer extraordinaire.
06:10 I start out my day, I have the Assault Fitness.
06:14 What I love about it is it's not a plugged in thing.
06:17 It's all a manual and it's delightful.
06:20 So I do 10 minutes with my gloves on here.
06:22 And then I come over here, do some punching here.
06:27 Just working out a system here.
06:30 So 10 minutes on the bike, 10 minutes here.
06:33 And those are both hard 10 minutes.
06:35 I'm not leisurely on either one.
06:37 Then, boom, in the pool.
06:40 10 minutes of laps.
06:42 I've got a half hour that I've worked different parts
06:44 of my body and I feel good.
06:45 And by the way, after I've done my 10 minutes of swimming,
06:48 I might just stay in the pool.
06:50 - Your fitness journey is incredibly inspiring.
06:52 How did it start?
06:53 - What inspired me to start the whole journey?
06:55 I honestly don't know.
07:00 There wasn't the day where I went, "Today it starts."
07:03 Like, you know, it was just, I did it.
07:06 The biggest thing with success, show up.
07:09 Show up.
07:10 - How to keep your mind fit.
07:11 - The two things that I think are really important
07:15 to a human being's development is some level of meditation
07:20 and being kind to yourself.
07:22 I'm at the highest level of fitness
07:25 that I've ever been in in my life at almost 60 years old.
07:29 No dieting, and I aspire to be kind to myself.
07:32 - What's your favorite exercise?
07:33 - My favorite exercise is actually
07:36 when I'm live boxing with Peter.
07:38 It hurts the most and it feels the best.
07:40 - We'll usually start with a two punch progression
07:42 and we'll build where it's four punches, six punches,
07:45 eight punches, and so on and so forth
07:46 until he's just putting them in bunches, you know,
07:49 punches and bunches, as it's said.
07:51 And it's just great.
07:52 It's great to build in the repetition.
07:54 It's great for memorization.
07:55 It's great for-
07:56 - I can't believe that I memorized it.
07:58 No, and I will say to you, the uppercut, yes, the uppercut.
08:01 And also the work that boxing does on your core.
08:07 I've never done intentional work that's created the pain
08:10 and the tight, nice and tight.
08:12 We box three times a week.
08:15 These are my gloves.
08:16 I saw these and I had to get them.
08:18 They're super rare, which is a great company.
08:20 They have a special Wheaties Muhammad Ali version
08:23 and that's what these are and they make me very happy.
08:25 - Let's see those gloves in action.
08:27 - We've already worked out today.
08:28 I'm not doing a bonus workout for the cameras for this.
08:32 That's not gonna happen.
08:33 I was literally feeling, I worked out so hard with him,
08:35 I felt like puking.
08:36 So it's not gonna happen.
08:38 - Take a seat for these rapid fire questions.
08:41 Workout time, 7 a.m. or 7 p.m.?
08:43 - 7 p.m.
08:44 - Squat or deadlift?
08:46 - Squat.
08:47 - Favorite song in your workout playlist?
08:48 - Hold on, Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy
08:52 by Elton John.
08:53 - Crossfit, yay or nay?
08:55 - Nay.
08:55 - Pull-ups or chin-ups?
08:57 - Nay, nay.
08:58 - Dumbbells or kettlebells?
08:59 - Dumbbells.
09:00 - Run on the treadmill or in the great outdoors?
09:02 - Oh, treadmill.
09:04 - Cardio or weights?
09:05 - Either, cardio or weights.
09:06 - Big legs or big arms?
09:08 - I'm not gonna say who this is, Dane Cook.
09:11 Dane Cook's arms are too big for comedy.
09:13 He's on stage and I look at his arms,
09:15 I go, "What's going on?
09:15 "His legs are normal."
09:17 But he does a giant (beep)
09:18 Arms and legs are meant to be, look at how solid, solid.
09:23 - Biggest compliment, jacked, ripped, swole, or cut?
09:26 - Jacked, what, jacked?
09:27 - Jacked, ripped, swole, or cut?
09:30 - Oh, jacked, ripped, cut.
09:36 - If you could work out with anyone dead or alive,
09:37 who would it be?
09:38 - What I'm gonna do is I'm gonna end things here
09:40 so I don't have to get up.
09:42 So, Peter, come over here, Peter.
09:45 - Thank you, pal.
09:46 - You're welcome.
09:46 - And thank you for joining me today.
09:47 - Of course.
09:48 - And to find people from, what is it,
09:51 from workout to refrigerator, what is it?
09:54 - It's gym and fridge.
09:55 - From gym to fridge.
09:56 - And fridge.
09:57 - From gym to fridge, that was delightful.
09:58 Everyone, I love Men's Health Magazine.
10:00 Not Men's Health, right?
10:01 Men's Health.
10:02 - Men's Health.
10:03 - Yeah, Men's Health, what am I?
10:04 I don't know.
10:05 Hey, we're done, we're done.
10:07 It's over and it's been an honor and a pleasure
10:12 and I will see you around sometime.
10:14 Thank you.
