TCU turned it over a season-high 27 times in a loss to No. 24 Iowa State.

00:00 >> Yeah, I mean, obviously, our goal this year was to not lose any home games and
00:04 we just did it.
00:06 So I'm very troubled by that.
00:09 I was troubled how we played, especially obviously in the first half.
00:11 [LAUGH]
00:16 Obviously, it doesn't take a genius to figure out the problem.
00:20 It's hard to fathom, but it's on me.
00:26 I mean, maybe I said it too much, talking about ball pressure,
00:30 over penetrating, and hit on the board this morning when we met.
00:35 And I talked about it before in the two different meet and
00:37 get togethers before the game.
00:39 And we just didn't handle it well.
00:41 I don't know how, I don't know why.
00:42 We play similar defense.
00:43 Theirs is more aggressive than us.
00:45 They force a few more turnovers.
00:47 Their bigs are more active.
00:48 But it's obviously true.
00:53 I don't think I've ever, I mean, so I hate to even say the word, but
00:59 27 turnovers, it makes it hard.
01:03 We fought back.
01:04 We were better in the second half.
01:06 We did it, but still times of over penetration.
01:08 And there were some that were just unfathomable, not even like,
01:20 not even forced, just unforced dropping the ball.
01:25 I mean, but we say 10 is our number, we get 27, obviously.
01:32 So I mean, I don't know how many times we've talked about that.
01:33 Obviously, you look at all the numbers, they're good.
01:36 Rebounds get skewed cuz you turn it over so much.
01:38 So that's, we can say we got a rebound.
01:42 But we fought back, a little bit better getting off the ball.
01:48 Made some shots, played in more space in the second half, but
01:53 still had moments where we went back to it and we were playing a crowd.
01:57 So I can't tell you, I mean, obviously we've tried to create this home
02:03 court advantage, try to win every home game.
02:05 It's been my mission here.
02:07 And to come out and play like this with a good crowd is so disappointing.
02:13 Again, I guess it goes down to another one point loss from what, loss three.
02:17 This one's a different kind of one, I would say, but it's still a loss.
02:23 And it doesn't matter.
02:24 And home loss is destroying what you're trying to do.
02:29 But as I told the guys, we gotta move forward.
02:31 We've got a game Tuesday, quick turnaround.
02:33 We got practice tomorrow.
02:35 >> What were some things that you did in the second half to cut into that deficit?
02:38 >> I thought we did a little better job of getting, not playing in a crowd.
02:42 I think we simplified our plays a little bit.
02:45 But we kinda learned from it, I think to some degree.
02:50 But still at the end, there were some forced right bad decisions driving back
02:54 into the, well, we were driving back where it came from.
02:57 It's pretty easy to guard that.
02:59 But probably simplify playing with a different lineup.
03:04 We had Jacoby in there at the five, so it gives us a little better ball handling.
03:08 But we're gonna have to lose some defensively.
03:12 So probably that had something to do with the cutting down offensively,
03:16 turnovers, and scoring better.
03:17 And I don't know, it's not possible to be worse than we were in the first half, so
03:23 that probably factors in there too.
03:25 So that's it.
03:29 We made adjustments, yes.
03:30 But I mean, we had some, in the first half, where we just dropped the ball.
03:34 I mean, just dribbled it out of it, ran guys over.
03:38 I mean, there were some really disappointing plays from us.
03:42 And really, overpenetration was the biggest problem.
03:46 >> I'm gonna pause it.
03:48 I mean, Trey had 19 points since conference, but what is he showing?
03:52 You said he wasn't showing plays.
03:53 >> Yeah, I mean, he's, for the way he defends,
03:56 he's probably our best guard defender.
03:59 He definitely is.
04:00 And he wasn't when he got here.
04:01 And I just used him as an example to the guys in the locker room.
04:05 It's just, he cares so much that he came in as a very poor defender and
04:10 now he's a good defender.
04:12 So yeah, he cares about scoring and shooting and those things too.
04:16 But you work on your weaknesses, and that's what he did.
04:18 So some guys work on their weaknesses, a lot don't.
04:24 They keep doing the same things over and over again.
04:26 And that's where you can only tell them, coach them so much.
04:35 But there's gotta be buy-in.
04:37 And the execution was poor early first half,
04:42 execution second half was better.
04:45 But you can't take a whole like we had when I was 18.
04:53 You're gonna make some mistakes in each half.
04:56 Obviously, the numerous mistakes in the first half made the hole.
05:02 But he works, he cares, he gets better, told them what he was and
05:09 when he needed to get better, and he did it.
05:10 So that's a pretty simple formula.
05:13 It's just hard for guys to accept it and then do something about it.
05:18 But this kid did, and he should be applauded for it.
05:22 >> 15 offensive rebounds tonight, it's only six second chance points.
05:29 There were some opportunities maybe missed there.
05:31 >> Yeah, we might have had three on the last play down there too,
05:33 where we didn't finish.
05:35 I mean, that's part of, I think,
05:38 our forcing things, rushing things offensively in the half court.
05:46 And then getting rebounds and then rushing, forcing, being the same thing.
05:53 So, I mean, Ernest has had that issue, and he's gotten better at it.
05:58 So there's been improvement on that.
06:00 It's been a battle, but that was good.
06:05 But I think just more off balance, they do have rim protectors.
06:10 And they're old, and they're good, and they're physical.
06:13 And so, probably gotta give them some credit on that too.
06:15 But we didn't make good decisions, again, that's part of decision making.
06:21 We have 27 turnovers, decision making wasn't good.
06:24 Some of our shots, especially after offensive rebounds,
06:27 weren't balanced and whatever, just all night.
06:31 Just go right back up with it, rather than finding an open man or
06:35 gathering as we work on every day.
06:37 >> How surprising was that first 20 minutes, just all of the turnovers?
06:42 >> I mean, I guess nothing surprises you, but you think, and you thought,
06:46 you have stretches, everybody has stretches, bad stretches, four minute
06:50 stretches, but it just continued for 20 minutes.
06:52 And then I even think the last play of the half was unbelievable.
06:56 I mean, it was like we literally threw the team ball to the other team, and
06:59 then we rush out to guard at half court when the guy's behind for a layup.
07:03 I mean, we've made mistakes and
07:07 compounded them with our next action, our next move, our next reaction.
07:12 So, the positives is we responded, we got better.
07:18 And in the second half, made a run, got back in it,
07:23 made a couple more of those mistakes.
07:25 It looked like it went back up again, and then we cut it down.
07:29 But we gotta work on it, we just gotta work on it.
07:36 And we're not, we're athletic, we've got these guys here,
07:42 it's been constantly improving their skills,
07:47 their skill level, and that's been part of the process.
07:51 And that kind of caught up to us again today, where there's been improvement,
07:56 there's been better decision making, it's all we work on.
07:58 But today it didn't, I don't know,
08:03 maybe it would be big crowds, every game is sold out, we play in.
08:07 I mean, so I don't know that we can say that.
08:12 Offensively, last game in Cincinnati was a clinic, it's the first ten minutes.
08:17 This game was about as bad as you could possibly be the first ten minutes.
08:20 So go figure that out.
