Porter Moser Texas Postgame (1-23-24)
Transcript
00:00 >> Porter looked like a back and forth game, a lot of momentum swings both ways
00:03 until maybe late in the second half where things kind of spiraled away.
00:06 Maybe what changed, what did you see in those last few minutes that
00:10 Texas was able to pull away?
00:11 >> Well, I'm always saying don't let your offense dictate your defense.
00:15 I think our defense dictate our offense.
00:17 I think, gotta give them credit.
00:19 I mean, they hit some shots.
00:21 They had the, I think the flagrant foul, and then they got two shots,
00:25 the ball back, and then they maxed it at three from like 27 feet.
00:29 They made some, I mean, they played with a great urgency.
00:33 They played with a great urgency, and I just, I think our guys,
00:36 our offense wasn't nearly as crisp and quick, and that starts with me.
00:41 But you can tell that us not getting stops, and they were on that,
00:44 making those shots, DeSue made that jab step, DeSue hitting some threes.
00:49 I thought in the first half, they got up nine, we battled back,
00:52 took a six point lead.
00:54 They came back, DeSue and Cunningham hit back to back threes.
00:57 I thought every single time we tried to get something, they answered it.
01:01 And I thought their guards played extremely physical.
01:04 I thought DeSue was extremely, he's really good defensively.
01:09 And I thought that we couldn't get stops.
01:12 And I thought I didn't think we were cutting and
01:16 moving as hard on offense when we couldn't get those stops.
01:20 >> Okay, well, Porter, you mentioned not getting the stops.
01:23 Other side, a lot of one and done for you guys.
01:26 Maybe, I'm not surprised is the right word, but
01:28 your inability to control the glass tonight.
01:31 >> Yeah, they dominated.
01:33 I mean, DeSue, Mitchell, the high level athletes, and
01:35 they were either blocking shots, and we didn't get offensive rebounds.
01:39 We had five.
01:40 I thought Rivaldo came in, but our starting guys, Sam Jalen,
01:44 Otegi didn't have any.
01:45 I mean, John had one in 20 minutes.
01:48 I thought the kid, Kendall Weaver, gave him a tremendous lift.
01:52 I thought he had three offensive rebounds, 11 points, his energy level.
01:56 You could just see he was playing, they were playing for,
02:00 you could just see the urgency they had.
02:01 And I thought we at times did some things.
02:05 It was that stretch where they got separation, and then it was just,
02:09 we had some, couldn't buy a basket in that separation.
02:12 But you gotta give them credit, the physicality they had on our guards.
02:15 >> Ryan Chapman, the Jim's Hill.
02:17 >> Porter, you're 0 and 5 against Texas, 1 and 4 against OSU.
02:21 What's been the missing piece in these rivalry games early on,
02:24 trying to get to the scope of it?
02:25 >> Yeah, I'm disappointed.
02:26 I'm disappointed cuz fans were awesome.
02:28 I've worked my ass off to get people in here, and that's on me.
02:31 That's on me.
02:32 So we're thinking about the race this year.
02:34 We're thinking, but yeah, obviously we didn't play to our standards,
02:40 and we gotta give them credit.
02:41 But it starts with me.
02:43 I put that team out there today, and I thought we were ready, and
02:46 we looked tired in the second half.
02:48 And I gotta give them credit, because I thought they made some crucial
02:54 key baskets in a seven, eight minute stretch that got separation.
02:57 >> Go ahead, please.
02:59 >> Porter, how much did their ability to block shots affect?
03:03 You guys are a great team getting to the rim, but that was tougher today to do that.
03:08 How much did that affect what you guys were trying to do offensively?
03:12 >> Well, I think that's, when they play like that, I mean, they're really,
03:15 their defense is, Mitchell is an above the rim shot blocker to Sue.
03:20 His, I think Tyrese Hunter and Weaver were elite defensively.
03:24 And I thought Max played his butt defensively.
03:26 So when you got two really good shot blockers into Sue and
03:29 Mitchell at the end, you got guards that are pressuring you so hard.
03:32 And when you do go by him, if you go by him,
03:35 you got someone else waiting there to block the shot.
03:36 So I thought they played tremendous defense tonight.
03:39 We felt it, and we played great defenses all year.
03:42 And we felt that this year.
03:44 We felt it in that stretch.
03:45 And again, I'm always saying don't let your offense dictate your defense.
03:48 You gotta guard.
03:49 And I will say, there were times we were guarding really well.
03:51 We forced 13 turnovers.
03:53 Didn't get some second chance points.
03:55 And we didn't make some key shots.
03:58 But I thought we weren't as crisp offensively in that stretch when they got
04:03 separation, and that starts with me.
04:05 >> Boogie, live in Tart.
04:07 >> Brent, Max has made a career on kind of playing the spoiler.
04:10 Fort Roberts here.
04:11 How did you see what he did tonight kind of charge them as a whole?
04:16 >> I thought we made that bad shot.
04:17 That was a picture like when you, and that, like I said, he makes shots.
04:20 He made one from the corner.
04:21 He made one from the top.
04:23 He draws so much attention.
04:24 It's hard to help and get your help defense going with them.
04:27 Tremendous player.
04:28 Tremendous player.
04:30 Super efficient.
04:31 I think he had 22 points on 14 shots.
04:33 Four rebounds, three assists.
04:37 Super efficient night by an all league player.
04:40 >> You mentioned how tough it was going up against
04:44 the offensive end when he's on defense, but getting two, three pointers tonight.
04:49 What does that do to you guys defensively?
04:50 >> He's been getting at least two a game every game in this league, and
04:53 he had four against Cincinnati.
04:55 And he puts so much pressure on you to make decisions.
04:57 I mean, he hit a jab step three.
05:00 We stunted on him in that first half when we were up six.
05:03 Comes out of time out.
05:04 He caught it.
05:04 We stunted on him, and he still jab stepped and hit a three.
05:08 I mean, I said it for two days.
05:10 He is a three level scorer.
05:12 He can store on the block, which he did.
05:14 Turn it face up, jab, jab, and took that move.
05:17 Then he put it on the deck, and he hit two threes.
05:20 And he's a tremendous, tremendous player.
05:22 I thought his defense was almost better than offense, and
05:24 I thought he was a lead offensively.
05:26 I thought he played tremendous defense a game tonight.
05:28 DeSue did.
05:28 >> D.
05:30 >> Pardon me, I just walked in.
05:31 Pardon me if it's been asked, but did you try to recruit him and bring him here?
05:35 >> No, we weren't involved with DeSue.
05:41 >> Any additional questions for Coach Holden?
05:43 And then Clay.
05:44 >> You touched on it a little bit, but just how difficult the Big 12 is to drop
05:48 one at home, just how tough is that knowing how hard wins are to come by?
05:53 >> We gotta bounce back.
05:54 We gotta bounce, this can't define us.
05:55 I mean, we gotta grow from struggle.
05:57 We struggled.
05:58 We gotta struggle, grow from it.
06:00 But you gotta get back and go get on one game win streaks after this.
06:05 And that's the next one.
06:06 So we must need a day off tomorrow, but we gotta regroup.
06:10 We gotta regroup, and Texas Tech is on their bye week.
06:14 We know that, but we gotta get rested and get ready for
06:17 another physical defensive game, and we gotta grow from this struggle.
06:20 >> Yeah, when you say not crisp offensively when Texas created separation,
06:28 what was or wasn't happening on the court that was creating that lack of crispness?
06:35 >> I thought the credit goes to Texas, and
06:37 then when we did have a good shot, we didn't make it.
06:39 But I thought their guards were super physical.
06:42 I thought Weaver played a great defensive game.
06:43 I thought DeSue was physical, Hunter's physical, Max.
06:46 I thought they, and then when we did get back, it was in their head.
06:49 And Mitchell's coming down, a couple of them didn't get the credit for
06:52 blocked shots, but he affected it.
06:54 He affected it.
06:55 And when you feel that kind of pressure, you need something to loosen up.
07:00 And make a couple, JV on and Lowe's been making a bunch of shots.
07:04 They didn't, but I thought they had great physicality and
07:07 urgency on defense, Texas did.
07:09 >> One follow up, please.
07:11 >> Follow up? >> Yes.
07:12 >> It's terrific that you have six, seven, or
07:16 eight guys that can go get your points, can go make things happen for you.
07:21 But are you lacking one guy when things aren't going well,
07:25 we want it in that guy's hands, or does somebody need to-
07:28 >> I don't think we're lacking it.
07:29 I'm not gonna panic.
07:31 We've had three losses before this to two top five teams, and
07:36 DCU was in the top 25.
07:38 I'm not gonna say to my guys, we don't have a guy to go do it.
07:40 They've been doing it all year.
07:42 JV McCollum is an outstanding guard.
07:44 Look, Milo Souza is an outstanding guard.
07:46 I'm not gonna sit here after a tough loss and
07:48 say that we don't have a guy to go get it, we do.
07:50 I gotta put them in better positions.
07:52 I gotta put them in better positions.
07:54 We gotta play tougher against tougher defense.
07:56 We've done that all year.
07:57 We played great defenses.
07:58 We were tough as hell in Cincinnati.
08:00 We weren't tonight.
08:01 Credit Texas, we'll get better with that.
08:03 But I'm not gonna say that we don't have a go-to guy.
08:06 We got guys that have been stepping up all year.
08:07 Hell, you don't get to be where we're at at 15 and 3 and
08:12 11th in the country without having guys.
08:14 I'm not throwing any of those guys under the bus.
08:16 We didn't play well tonight.
08:17 Starts with me.
08:18 I know those guys, they're in the mirror looking at themselves too.
08:21 And we gotta come back and bounce back from this game.
08:23 And I apologize to the Sooner Nation, man.
08:25 I've been working out to get this crowd like this.
08:27 They were great.
08:28 They were great, and we didn't win.
08:31 We didn't win tonight.
08:32 And we'll bounce back.
08:35 Thanks everyone. Thanks coach.
