00:00 Hello, I'm Neil from The Evening News and this video is part of our retro series where
00:05 we look back at historic pictures of Edinburgh. In this video we'll be looking at pictures
00:10 of Edinburgh in 1981. This picture shows Edinburgh grocer William Archibald standing in front
00:17 of his shop window on Rosneath Street which he decorated with flags and poppies for Remembrance
00:22 Day. Here we see Hibbs footballers Ralph Callaghan and Arthur Duncan training at Easter Road
00:29 before the start of the 1981/82 season. After working the night shift at the Ferranti factory
00:36 these men can be seen enjoying an early morning pint at the Cavern Pub in Leith. Taking centre
00:43 stage at the Picardy Place roundabout was the kinetic sculpture, one of Edinburgh's
00:47 first examples of community art. This picture taken at the Waverley Steps in November 1981
00:55 shows people struggling to get through town on a particularly windy day. Here we see Ron
01:00 McNiven inside Buster Brown's, the futuristic Edinburgh nightclub he designed. The club
01:05 would later become Electric Circus before it closed in 2017. This picture shows the
01:12 main cocktail bar at Charlie Parker's on George Street. Former boxing lightweight world
01:18 champion Jim Watt can be seen here in October 1981 with the Blackheart Rum Calendar Girls.
01:25 Jonathan and Ruth Hannah dress up as Prince Charles and Princess Diana for Gilmerton Gala
01:31 Day ahead of the Royal Wedding in September 1981. This picture shows Edinburgh residents
01:38 Mrs Anderson with her daughter Mrs Stenhouse outside the Rosemount buildings when they
01:43 were being restored in September 1981. A foreman with Dalton Demolitions was injured in June
01:51 1981 when scaffolding collapsed at a site on Belford Road. And finally here we see the
01:57 exterior of Tiffany's nightclub in St Stephen's Street in July 1981. If you'd like to check
