Baylor men's basketball head coach Scott Drew talks triple overtime loss at home to TCU.
Transcript
00:00 >> The road really puts you in a great mood.
00:01 So first I wanna apologize to the Baylor fans cuz that's tough to cheer for
00:06 a team three straight times and lose.
00:07 It's harder to coach it.
00:09 And I know our players feel like crap.
00:12 Worked really hard to try to be better in game ending situations.
00:15 I think we've shown some improvement.
00:17 Our free throw shooting is better but not good enough.
00:20 Our rebounding, we needed one more to win that second chance battle.
00:25 We've done pretty good throughout the game and then in the late in the game and
00:29 over time credit TCU for coming up with some key offensive rebounds and
00:36 making some key plays down the stretch.
00:38 I thought when Jacoby hit the three, we were really there and
00:42 after that just didn't close it out.
00:46 So crowd was awesome and gave us a great opportunity and great chance.
00:52 And so many close plays that lead to winning or
00:56 losing and I know it just takes a spark to start a fire and
01:01 we're at that point we need to get a win and get some confidence going.
01:05 >> Scott, what is kind of your message to them and to the locker room?
01:12 >> I think we're tired of losing one possession games.
01:14 [BLANK_AUDIO]
01:24 >> Coach, Junior Nelson Jr.
01:26 got in the room a lot in the second half.
01:27 >> So does he get called by him that often?
01:30 I mean, four or five of those, I don't know if he could have made if he called him.
01:33 I mean, now he was phenomenal.
01:35 He was tremendous, great game, but he was a problem for us and
01:39 he's a really good kid, I know he's a good player.
01:41 Go ahead and ask the question.
01:43 >> What made him so effective against what you were trying to do?
01:45 >> Our backboard.
01:47 Because I don't know how many banks he had, he made some tough shots and
01:50 credit him, and then he really did a good job.
01:54 I think timely free throws, timely layups,
02:02 but there was some really tough shots he hit, credit him, he made them.
02:07 >> Coach, you mentioned backboard, Ray J had a fair number of those himself.
02:11 Is this the kind of game that you really saw him as coming in and giving you?
02:16 >> I think Ray J's were more layup banks.
02:18 They weren't 15 foot banks.
02:21 But yeah, I thought he was really good down the stretch.
02:26 I thought defensively he was really good and
02:28 did a good job on the line, hit a big three for us.
02:33 I'm sure there's a couple of possessions we all wish we could have back.
02:37 The ten second call, that's a killer.
02:40 17 turnovers is too many, but obviously 24-10, you're pleased with that.
02:48 >> At the end of the second possession, over time, when there was a follow away,
02:52 three I think is the shot he ended up with.
02:55 What were you looking for at the end of that over time?
02:59 >> They all kind of run together.
03:01 Was that the one we didn't really get a good look at?
03:03 >> Yeah. >> Yeah.
03:04 >> Moving around.
03:05 >> We ran the same play and they were having trouble stopping it.
03:10 We had some really good looks from there.
03:12 But we were hoping to get a one kick and it was the same
03:19 ball screen action that Ray J had been so effective on.
03:24 If I'm thinking the right over time, I might be off.
03:30 >> I think it's the end of the second, yeah.
03:32 >> Langston made a ton of hustle play.
03:34 I mean, in the offensive rebound, this rebound steal with the dunk.
03:39 I mean, can that kind of thing be contagious?
03:44 >> We need more of it.
03:46 They got some timely plays that got them to win.
03:49 And I was proud that we made a lot of good, tough plays, enough to win, but
03:53 we didn't, so you gotta make more.
03:55 But ten rebounds by Langston is a big improvement.
04:00 That's an area we've asked him to get better at and to do more.
04:03 And he responded today with ten.
04:06 I know there are a couple block outs he wishes he could have back, but
04:10 ten rebounds is very good.
04:12 >> Scott, thank you.
04:13 Obviously, leading up to this game,
04:16 the issue was getting buckets down the stretch and going scoreless.
04:20 You guys really didn't do that down the stretch today, but still came up short.
04:24 What do you think the issue is there?
04:26 What do you need to fix?
04:27 >> Well, I mean, it's a game on two ends of the court.
04:31 And we can be good on the offense and struggle on the defense.
04:34 We can be good on the defense, struggle on the offense.
04:36 And we can be good on the glass and then struggle on the glass.
04:40 And at the end of the day, you gotta be good in every area.
04:44 If you're not gonna have a one possession game, and
04:46 a one possession game, anything can happen.
04:49 And I mean, Coach Dixon, he's a great coach, great program.
04:58 They have the most experienced team, and I think it shows.
05:01 And I think we got a talented team, but
05:06 we're going through the fire first time, a lot of them.
05:08 And sometimes you gotta get burned to learn.
05:13 And I tell you, it's hard losing, you put as much in it as everybody puts in it,
05:19 to have close losses, I mean, that's hard.
05:21 >> Coach, Eve gets a career high 25 points and also just one foul.
05:26 How was it to keep him out there for 40 plus minutes and
05:28 just see that progression?
05:29 >> Well, what I was really proud of Eve is when he first got here,
05:33 we asked him to get tougher.
05:35 And I mean, he had a striped throat, big guy yesterday, and he played today.
05:38 So hats off for him.
05:40 >> Did O'Bannon just hit great shots?
05:44 Did you feel like you didn't close out hard enough on him, or
05:47 were those just great shots the way you saw it?
05:49 Cuz those were- >> I don't know if this is his season
05:51 high either, but if he had saw a or
05:55 every game, he'd be in all we do cuz he's a monster against us.
05:59 Anything else?
06:02 All right. >> Thanks, guys.
06:03 >> Thanks. >> Thanks, Coach.
