00:00 Okay, well, what a game.
00:05 Obviously came out the way we wanted to.
00:08 Fought through a lot of adversity.
00:12 We got a remanded, we got way more free throws than we did.
00:17 But just kept battling, kept fighting.
00:19 And we're kind of developing that.
00:20 We got such a new crew.
00:22 Just kind of getting a red spinner award for the week.
00:25 And we've tried to become that group, cuz we're not there yet.
00:31 But we're gonna get there, man, I believe in it.
00:33 So, but all ten guys were terrific.
00:36 That's been our thing too, that all ten guys.
00:38 Chuck was amazing.
00:40 He's waited patiently and did his thing today.
00:46 And all guys that foul trouble, foul trouble the entire game.
00:50 And somehow we survived it.
00:53 So, what a great atmosphere, great win for us.
00:58 Great game for the Big 12.
01:00 I'm sure everyone's watching.
01:02 Two really good teams.
01:04 In defense, we thought we did some really good things, yet
01:06 they still scored 102 points.
01:09 Their offense is so hard to guard because of their rollers and
01:13 their shooters and their playmaker.
01:15 And Coach Kowalski's a very good friend of mine.
01:19 He told me how good Dennis was.
01:21 So, he lived up to it today.
01:26 But some really good things from us as far as just gutting it out,
01:32 finding ways, coming loose balls.
01:34 And we got our rebounds.
01:35 I don't know how we got that done, but for some turnovers, more than they got.
01:39 And of course, I think Michelle was some ridiculous number in the second half,
01:43 68% or something, so 17th or 25.
01:48 So we attacked, we passed well, and found a way.
01:54 And great job knocking loose ball play at the end by Jameer for grabs play.
01:59 >> You get 30 points game, I guess how big was the overall?
02:04 >> Yeah, I mean, we've talked about having these two point guards and
02:08 how they're getting better and better.
02:09 And I think that was evident today where Avery's played really good against
02:14 Oklahoma State, this is Jameer.
02:16 We like to play them together, but everybody's in foul trouble.
02:19 Look at our fouls, we got four, four, four, four from our four starters.
02:24 So three over here with Chuck, so we just had to adjust.
02:28 Jameer was the guy that wasn't in foul trouble.
02:31 He drew six fouls, it said.
02:33 So, but again, somehow we were able to get this done with us being entirely
02:38 in foul trouble the entire game.
02:39 And he got in lane, we called a lot of screen,
02:46 ball screens for him, getting better at setting the ball screens.
02:49 And I thought we played pretty good space, getting a little better job.
02:54 But he finished the round with a rhythm.
02:57 We've seen moments and we certainly saw it today.
03:00 >> Jameer, when you guys were down ten with about 11 minutes to go in
03:03 the second half, it looked like you made an adjustment on how you were defending
03:06 the pick and roll.
03:07 >> Yeah. >> Could you talk us through that a little
03:09 bit? >> Yeah, I mean,
03:09 we adjusted a couple different times.
03:11 We tried a couple different things.
03:13 And so we were changing throughout, but there was a stressor.
03:18 We did change it.
03:20 We didn't stay with it the rest of the way, but we wanted to be able to change.
03:25 It was hurting us as we were hurting them.
03:28 But they're good.
03:30 I mean, they've got shooters on the floor.
03:32 They've got two roller guys that are highly, highly athletic in size.
03:40 I mean, they have elite players.
03:41 No surprise, it was a mess.
03:43 Everybody in the country wanted it.
03:44 I mean, Walter, everybody in the country wanted it.
03:48 I mean, these are good players.
03:50 And Ray, everybody in the country wanted it, which it was me.
03:53 It took a little bit of his lead.
03:54 So they have good players.
03:56 We tried to change it up a little bit.
03:58 One thing we weren't gonna do was go zone because we didn't wanna give them threes.
04:02 And that was our big thing.
04:03 So we did that.
04:05 We did five or less in the triple overtime game.
04:07 That's our number, five or less.
04:08 And that's what our goal was.
04:09 So I think I wanna get on a six in the triple overtime game.
04:13 But we used to end with a goal of five.
04:14 >> With the degree that Jameer has, I'm sure you're not surprised that he played
04:19 way better than the intensity ramped up in a game like this one.
04:21 >> Well, I mean, it's fine.
04:23 Jameer, his dad's a friend and back from the East Coast days.
04:27 But Jameer wasn't a basketball guy growing up.
04:31 Jameer, believe it or not, played baseball.
04:33 And so as his dad said, he's not what you think.
04:39 And so there's some growing there.
04:43 And that's what's exciting to us as a program and to me as a coach.
04:47 He's a great kid.
04:48 We have great kids.
04:49 We have unbelievable character, high character kids.
04:52 So that, while we've had some losses, we've responded.
04:57 And they're good kids.
04:59 We're just gonna get a little bit more of that grit that we're developing here,
05:02 and the toughness, the physicality.
05:06 And we're still lacking that.
05:08 But today showed some real mental toughness.
05:10 So Jameer's a physically tough kid.
05:14 But at the same time, he attacks.
05:19 Somebody scores, he wants to score the next player right away.
05:24 And that's kind of the things we're gonna work through.
05:26 So he is aggressive.
05:28 He is competitive.
05:30 At times, we gotta control that a little bit.
05:32 >> So being always that confident, even though he had to deploy a baton,
05:37 he was confident to step up and get those two big shots.
05:39 >> Yeah, I mean, we played more last game cuz he defended well.
05:44 We have a lot of good players.
05:47 And Micah, who do we take out?
05:48 E-Man, Micah.
05:49 I think at times we have to go, we had E-Man as the five a little bit.
05:55 As I've said, we're kind of a new, we didn't have everybody all summer.
06:02 We didn't have everybody all fall.
06:04 We're still putting this all together here.
06:06 But he gives us, if he defends, we're gonna have him on the floor.
06:11 But he took good shots.
06:12 He didn't rush anything.
06:16 He was huge for us.
06:17 I mean, the shot, as you said, those three threes were huge.
06:23 One was against his own, which we just stabilized and we prepared for that.
06:26 And we knew we'd throw it in there.
06:28 And we were ready for it.
06:30 And we executed really well on that.
06:32 And then the other one was great execution on two plays, right?
06:36 Both plays were executed exactly right, we made the right pass.
06:39 Started with Jameer and
06:41 then back to the man one extra pass there to Chuck in the corner.
06:46 >> You just recognized that zone immediately.
06:48 It seemed like you all had 5-0 right when they went in that zone.
06:51 >> Yeah, yeah, we knew it was coming.
06:53 I mean, it's no surprise.
06:56 We got great assistance.
06:57 Coach Amelia was the scout.
06:59 Coach Benford does a great job.
07:00 And we recognize that, and
07:05 we knew it was coming because we felt we would score on them.
07:09 And so we had to figure out ways to stop them.
07:13 I don't know that we did a great job of that, but we did just enough.
07:16 Cuz they shot 47%, but it was 55 and a half to them, so we got that in the second half.
07:22 >> I understand that he forced a turnover guard and
07:24 goal guard, I mean, obviously that's a block.
07:25 How big was he to the point that the demonstrators fell over the top of that?
07:28 >> He was huge.
07:29 I mean, he was plus, minus, he was 15.
07:32 He's one for two.
07:34 And he just does some things that you can't, he does some things,
07:38 I don't know if you guys heard, he does some things you can't teach, all right?
07:43 The athleticism, the courtness, the laugh queries.
07:46 Then he does some things that, I know I taught him differently.
07:49 And so we're still working on those aspects of it.
07:53 But he just hasn't played a lot.
07:55 I mean, he didn't play at all Kansas, obviously, at all, so we don't know.
07:59 And I don't know how much he played in high school.
08:03 I'll be honest with you, so he keeps getting better and better.
08:06 He plays hard.
08:07 I mean, the guy's worked to do what he's done with the free throws.
08:11 It's improved so much, just the stroke, and just excited about his future.
08:17 >> Jimmy, can you talk a little bit about Mike, who's gained 18 points,
08:22 consistently guarding some of their scores?
08:23 >> Yeah, no, and we put him on Dennis, and it's 24, and you get 24, 10, and 5.
08:30 I mean, that's three quarters, got the ball the entire time.
08:33 Three whole times, I should say.
08:37 I mean, Mike was huge.
08:38 It was interesting because we were trying to figure out who to get in there.
08:42 Every time we, Emmanuel, Micah, Chuck, Trey, we needed him out there.
08:47 He goes five for nine, four for seven, and 15 points on nine shots is pretty good.
08:52 Jameer, Avery wasn't his night, but he did some good things.
08:57 He had five assists.
08:58 He was in foul trouble, though, so early.
09:01 I keep saying we got good players, we've gotta just use it to our advantage.
09:06 We got a lot of good players.
09:07 I think the ten has been a little frustrating for
09:10 some of them because they wanna play more.
09:14 And we just gotta accept it and use it as a positive rather than a negative.
09:18 And they're getting there.
09:19 I think they're really getting there on that.
09:20 I mean, this one will help, too.
09:22 This one will help.
09:23 I mean, it's amazing, this league.
09:24 I mean, we've lost our three losses.
09:27 One point, two points, and an overtime.
09:32 And we fight through a lot of different things in all those games.
09:39 The free throws, the foul trouble.
09:44 We fought through a lot of different things.
09:47 Now we're gonna go play Texas Tech on Tuesday.
09:50 >> What was your message to the guys at the end of the second half,
09:52 as both teams were kind of battling it out for those overtimes?
09:56 >> I think we were scoring well enough.
09:57 We gotta get far enough to stop.
09:59 We gotta get the rebound, and the rebound to get turned.
10:01 I'm a little surprised by numbers, cuz I thought we got ahead on the rebounds.
10:04 But they got them in the second half, third overtime.
10:06 We was tracking overtime, too.
10:08 But they seem to turn the numbers again, but I thought that was it.
10:12 And but we got a few more deflections and loose balls that went our way.
10:19 And again, we shot 53% on the road.
10:25 I keep telling the guys we're gonna win with defense, but
10:27 we haven't quite done that yet.
10:28 We haven't, and we gotta go figure that out.
10:32 But offensively, we're just hitting better and better.
10:35 >> Anything else for coach?
10:37 Okay, thank you.
10:38 >> Thank you, thank you for being here.
