00:00 Reporter when you say you're gonna go after a game like a
00:03 One point loss and you say I'm gonna go home and look at film and we're gonna find things
00:08 What did you look at? What did you see this time?
00:10 What I saw is is not being able to get a stop the last five six minutes of the game
00:15 Our defense needs to be way better in the last five six minutes of the game. You got to get stops
00:20 You not necessarily have to score every possession
00:23 But if you've got a seven point leader to nine point lead you you got to get you got to get a majority of stops
00:27 We didn't get stops. I think we had one stop in the last five minutes and I saw some mental errors
00:34 You know, we talked about the one at the end of the half. There's another one
00:37 We have a mantra about if it's a low out of bounds play this low shot clock
00:42 You got to get back on the shot because if everyone crashes long rebounds, it's a run out. It's exactly what happened
00:48 we
00:50 You know, but it just are we've got to be better
00:54 Late game defense bottom line. I mentioned the one-on-one sessions of the players
00:58 Maybe what was the focus of those coming out come off of a couple of tough losses?
01:03 All about that. They know this I'm in that with them
01:07 You know, I could be mad and hold them to a standard but it doesn't mean like they're against me
01:12 I want to I did some individual ones because I want to let them to know like hey
01:16 we're in this together to find solutions, let's find this solution together and
01:19 you know a
01:23 Accountability is a form of love you've heard me say that before
01:26 So although we're going through that but I want you know
01:30 Sometimes you individual ones because I want them to know that man. He's he's for me
01:34 I'm in this and that's what some of the messages is is let's get let's figure this out together
01:39 It's not you're not fighting. You're not fighting someone who's holding you accountable and the opponent that that's really important for young people to stand
01:47 You're not fighting the person that's holding you accountable and your opponent person told you accountable
01:52 You're in it together and that's that's what that's what that's why sometimes you do some individual things
01:56 Some of the late mental errors surprised a little seen as you this year more veteran also deeper
02:03 The end of the first half was really bothersome, you know, obviously it makes it magnified
02:08 But when you have a one-point loss, but those are things that even you're taught as an eighth grader, you know
02:13 you want the last shot and
02:15 We should be better. They know that we should be better and especially it was a dead ball like where we could we talked about it
02:20 So there's other things um, we you know, we've we've shown we've locked up and had some really good stops defensively late
02:27 We've had a bunch of games where we crawl back in or held our lead because we got stops you you've you're do you can't have
02:35 Multiple lapses defensively last five minutes game. You can't you got to be on it your check offs
02:41 Everything has got to be on it. You can't so we we really really talked about that the last 48 hours are our
02:48 Our lapses defensively in the second half, you know where you guys got to communicate, you know, sorry, it's it's loud
02:56 We're at the other end. You'll see us practice that today
02:58 I don't know if you know what's practice but like we're at the other end that we're practicing today
03:02 No one's there you're it's you five
03:04 Against the crowd against this against our team that you've got to communicate and not have a breakdown
03:09 You don't have coaches yelling reminders. Hey, watch the flip watch the flip and all of a sudden they get it
03:13 You know in front of the bench week we can shotgun reminders to you away from it
03:17 We got to be better that last five minutes defensively. What have you seen with JV on effort?
03:21 Defensively, you know it we're that's that's one of the film sessions
03:26 You know, it's just you can't let everything else affect your defense, you know
03:31 I think when he's strong with the ball, I just showed him a montage of oh, you know
03:36 Providence USC Iowa State so many clips of where he was so strong with the ball and
03:44 And just to show and visualize that and then that you know his defense and
03:48 You just can't let you know for him
03:51 he's such a confident player and I want to keep that confidence high when his confidence high shows his defense and
03:57 We've got to be better. Not only him a lot of us. He wasn't the only one there was a number of us defensively
04:04 We got to get better and that starts with me
04:06 I'm that's what I'm trying to find any way I can a coach better to coach that last five minutes better and we will I mean
04:12 We have we've shown it we've had times
04:14 I mean there was a time in the first half that we were so good defensively was like nine or ten stops in a row
04:19 against an elite offense
04:21 We just said we had slippage late in the game
04:23 JV in psyche right now when he isn't necessarily getting the offense production. He's used to
04:29 Well, you know what?
04:30 not just JV but any player goes through that you go through that during the year and
04:34 What I told him is you talk about feeding that positive dog
04:39 John Gordon the author is a friend of mine
04:41 He's got a book called positive dog
04:43 And when you're quiet and you think about it you feed the negative dog and you got it
04:47 You got to feel great about a little thing. You get a great assist. You get a great stop you pick somebody up
04:52 Those are ways you're feeding your positive dog
04:54 You're not thinking about all the negatives that go on and I think that's such a key not only for JV on but for other guys
05:00 if they're going through
05:02 You're never gonna be just never not going through up and downs during a long season especially in this league
05:08 so when you are
05:10 One know that we're in this together to help you get out of it - how you get out of it
05:15 Let's feed that positive dog show watch yourself when you're really good
05:18 See yourself if you make a great defense to stop feel great about it
05:23 It just doesn't have to be a big three to make you get out of it
05:26 You know saying sometimes young people think the best way to get out of it is hitting a big shot
05:30 Then they force us
05:31 There's a million ways to make a winning play and that's what we're trying to have our guys focus in on is make a winning
05:37 Play get a 50/50 ball
05:39 Get a start to domino get that hockey assist you started the rotation one more one more led to a basket
05:45 Those are things we're trying to feed our guys in on when when if things aren't going their way
05:49 Seems like last time you're on the road at Cincinnati
05:52 You really found something how much does that game in which you're able to do kind of inform this week?
05:57 We were just talking about it. We got some stops. We got some stops, but then we made some plays offensively
06:02 We took care of the ball. We didn't have any turnovers
06:06 We rebounded the ball. We didn't rebound the ball in the second half. They got
06:11 Texas Tech got 42% of their misses
06:15 Analytically, that's way way way too high. Sorry. We're trying to get 30% of our misses
06:21 All right. That's what we're trying to do that the days of how many numbers that's not it
06:25 It's it's the percentage of your misses you're trying to get we're trying to get every game 30% of our misses and you're trying to
06:30 Give up like less than 25 or 28
06:32 42% of Texas Tech misses they got back
06:36 Unacceptable not good enough. You we got a really and we've been rebounding
06:40 We did we got our rebounded in the second half
06:43 Talk a couple of these guys certainly seems like confidence is still there. Is that the sense you've gotten these guys aren't rattled man yesterday. It's
06:50 We got an awesome group of guys. I mean I'm telling you, you know, there's there and there there again two games in rows ownership
06:58 Every one of us coaches players took ownership. We had to get together yesterday. It's a quick turnaround
07:04 And then we got practice again today before we head off to Manhattan
07:07 but
07:08 You know, yes, we know that
07:11 The mistakes we made and I'm really seeing their focus. I mean we're it's it magnifies when it's one point
07:18 There's one point here there on the team that's in standalone of the big 12. So
07:23 Frustrated, you know that frustrates not the word, you know, just really really disappointed
07:27 You didn't get that thing done. But in terms of their psyche, it's all it's all all cylinders pushing ahead man
07:33 yeah, you got to get get the next one and
07:35 Got a very good Kansas State team who plays great at home. They play great on the road, too
07:40 But a lot to do to stop that to stop them and beat them. What's your thoughts on them? Really good
07:45 I mean, they've done a phenomenal job of guys coming back and then the new guys in the portal Kaluma
07:51 Came from Creighton. I was in my alma mater and watched him in the NCAA tournament terrific Perry tell Perry watch
07:57 We really really scores. I mean he can do a lot
08:00 I think Cam Carter is the most improved player in the big 12. I think I mean he's I mean he's terrific
08:06 I think Geeson and McNair. They they they they are physical. They're long. They're athletic
08:13 And they can they can score in bunches in transition. We really got to get back in transition, but there's there one two and three
08:20 Perry
08:22 Carter and Kaluma. They're shooting the leather off it. Look at their three-point shooting percentages when you break this thing down
08:28 I mean, they are really shooting the ball those three. They look like though. They took they do try to get their bigs involved
08:34 Yeah, Geeson who is a big factor their elite a team last year. I mean, he's just so versatile
08:40 69 he runs he crashes he can play the four the five they added McNair from what Mississippi State and
08:46 Just a power center who's done really well, so they're pieces
08:52 They're really good. I mean, I've watched him many times already
08:56 ready.
