Leaders clash over mortgage costs during PMQs

During Prime Minister’s Questions Sir Keir Starmer accuses Rishi Sunak of not having “any level of basic understanding” over the cost-of-living crisis and mortgage rates. In response, the prime minister says his government has a “plan that is working”, hailing recent cuts in National Insurance and claims Labour would take the country “back to square one”. 00:00 The Prime Minister just doesn't get how hard it is for millions of people across the country
00:04 like Phil. That is the primary problem, struggling with their mortgages, their bills, the spiralling
00:10 cost of living. And the Prime Minister's response is never to take responsibility,
00:15 show contrition or even any level of basic understanding. He's so detached, he thinks
00:22 he can paint a world in which their problems simply don't exist. The problem is he can't
00:28 even fool his own MPs, let alone anyone else. The Member for Mid Norfolk says he's exhausted,
00:34 he's looking forward to new opportunities outside of Parliament. Why doesn't the Prime
00:38 Minister do him a favour, call an election so he and the whole country can move on?
00:44 Mr Speaker, Mr Speaker, thank you Mr Speaker. Whether it's Phil, whether it's everyone else
00:56 across the country, the plan that we're putting in place is working to help people and we're
01:00 making progress. Just this week, taking action to stop children from vaping. Just this week,
01:06 ensuring that people can visit their pharmacies to get the healthcare they need, freeing up
01:10 millions of GP appointments and just this week, millions of working people starting
01:16 to see hundreds of pounds of tax cuts delivered in their pay packet, Mr Speaker. That is a
01:21 plan that is working. All he's offering is £28 billion of tax rises and that is the
01:27 choice Mr Speaker. It's a brighter future with us or back to square one with them.
01:32 All three.
01:33 (audience laughing)
