Joe Buck summarises Newcastle United's quiet January transfer window as Magpies complete just one deadline day deal. Manchester City's Alfie Harrison joined Eddie Howe's side whilst Isaac Hayden and Javier Manquillo were allowed to leave to join QPR on loan and Celta Vigo permanently.

00:00 So, the January transfer window has finally closed and Newcastle United have confirmed
00:06 just the one signing this month. That was Alfie Harrison moved from Manchester City.
00:11 Now that had been boiling for a couple of weeks but that was confirmed at 3 o'clock
00:14 today on deadline day. So, yeah Newcastle end the window with just the one addition,
00:21 not even a first team addition. They really came into this window needing to strengthen
00:25 the injury issues. There's lots of holes in their squad and they thought they would look
00:32 to prioritise signings. Obviously it emerged as the window grew on that FFP, PSR regulations
00:38 meant that simply that was not going to be the case. They had to be very tight with money
00:42 this month and the only way to get anyone in would be to see someone leave. We saw Trippier,
00:49 Wilson and Alvaro link with a move in the last couple of weeks but they never materialised
00:54 other than Kieran Trippier where Newcastle had to stand firm against some Bayern Munich
00:58 interests. None of the other bids really looked like challenging Newcastle's resolve too much.
01:04 So, yeah Newcastle end the window. They are certainly not worse off than they were when
01:09 they entered the window. They've only lost Javi Manchio as a first team option. He hadn't
01:15 played all season, he's behind Livermendo and Kraft and Trippier of course in the pecking
01:20 order so that's not really a loss. They don't end the window weaker than they began it.
01:26 They don't end it any stronger, that's a guarantee. It'll be interesting to see if their squad
01:32 can manage the game load between now and the end of the campaign. We've seen them struggle
01:35 with that with injuries all year so that'll be a real test of that squad. If they can
01:38 manage with just the core of players Eddie Howe's got now, I think they'll manage sure
01:42 the rest of the season. Hopefully the injury crisis is beginning to subside. Although I've
01:47 said that on many videos here and we're still talking about lots of injuries at the club.
01:55 It's a hard one to assess because it's not really a missed opportunity because Newcastle
01:59 simply couldn't do anything. The finances meant they had no option, they couldn't do
02:02 anything this window. It's a shame that they've not been able to do anything and then maybe
02:07 these financial rules will get relaxed, changed or changed over the next few weeks and months
02:13 going into summer. They'll have more money to play with, it's easier to trade players
02:17 in summer which they'll have to do. So it'll be interesting if they repeat this window
02:22 in future windows this time next year, what happens. But right now I think Newcastle will
02:26 be disappointed they haven't brought anyone in. It's always disappointing when your team
02:30 doesn't bring anyone in and fans will have been wanting to see new faces. But I think
02:33 from a club's point of view it makes sense not to risk falling foul of those PSR rules
02:38 as we've seen Everton and Nottingham Forest do because we know the Premier League are
02:42 clamping down on that and there was no need to risk those rules this month when they've
02:48 got a summer where they can rebuild or at least reshape the squad. In terms of outgoings
02:53 on deadline day we saw Josh Scott leave the academy with under 21s, he went to go join
02:59 Queen's Park. We saw J Turner-Cook recalled from his loan at St. John's and he's expected
03:04 to remain at Newcastle between now and the end of the campaign. We've seen with Joe White
03:09 who came back earlier this month at the end of this window, he was on the bench against
03:13 J Turner-Cook, a similar position he might be given an opportunity to impress Eddie Howe
03:18 and hitting around the fringes of the first team squad, especially with Joe Willigan and
03:22 Elliot Anderson still out. But the only major outgoing on deadline day was Isaac Hayden,
03:27 he went to Queen's Park Rangers of the Championship. There was plenty of interest in him over the
03:32 window especially when his loan from Standard League got cut short. But it'll be Loftus
03:37 Road where he plays his football, he'll be playing with Jack Colbeck at Loftus Road.
03:42 Speaking of him, after his signing Isaac Hayden was very much determined to up for the challenge
03:50 at Loftus Road. They currently sit 22nd in the Championship and QBI are staring down
03:54 the Barreller relegation. But we all know, Newcastle fans, we all know Isaac Hayden,
03:57 he will bring that determination, he will bring a tough tackling mentality in that midfield.
04:03 So it'll be interesting to see how he works out there. It's clear that his Newcastle United
04:07 career is over. It's just trying to get maybe a permanent departure in some way, but it's
04:14 again trying to find clubs that will pay his wages. But right now he's off to QBR so it'll
04:18 be good news for him and the club and it'll be interesting to see how that works out for
04:22 Isaac Hayden. But yeah, other than that it was a pretty quiet deadline day at Newcastle
04:27 and across the Premier League really. We haven't seen too many deals. The only real talking
04:31 point in deadline day has been Amanda Brewer where he's going to end up playing his football.
04:35 He's going to go with Fulham from Chelsea on loan. So that was the only real talking
04:40 point across the whole league. A couple of odds and sods, deals getting done. But yeah,
04:45 quiet window in the Premier League and a quiet window in Newcastle United. But they have
04:50 to remain focused now. They've got a big challenge for the second half of the season to get back
04:54 in Europe. They're still in the FA Cup and of course that also starts with the game against
04:58 Luton Town on Saturday which is a massive game. They will take lots of hope and momentum
05:04 from their win over Villa on Tuesday but Luton Town beat them just before Christmas so it
05:08 certainly won't be an easy game. Eddie Howe will be speaking to the press on Friday morning
05:13 and he will have obviously all the latest fallout from the transfer window. He'll bring
05:19 you everything, previewing Luton, all the reaction on the transfer window and my colleague
05:23 Dom Skow will bring you that tomorrow morning, Friday morning as you listen to this or watch
05:29 this. So yeah, the best way to stay up to date with all the latest Newcastle United
05:33 news after a quiet deadline day for the rest of the season is of course with the Shields
05:38 Gazette.
