00:00So, with just two weeks of the January transfer window left, Newcastle United are still yet to make a move.
00:06We've seen a couple of departures of fringe players, young players. Alex Murphy is set to join Bolton Wanderers on loan.
00:13Isaac Hayden, of course, left earlier this month to join Portsmouth. Travis Hearness has gone out on loan, so has Charlie McArthur.
00:19So there's a couple of loan moves, but nothing incoming in Newcastle as it stands.
00:25And, of course, the two big deals going out with the club are still in the air.
00:28We've got Lloyd Kelly reports that he's been linked with Fenerbahce and Juventus.
00:32And, of course, Miguel Almiron potentially returned to Atlanta United.
00:35Now, that one with Almiron looks more set to happen. Talks about a £10m phase.
00:40It's likely for him, and of course, that's a good deal for Newcastle, I think.
00:43It's a decent-sized money. Almiron is someone who's not played too often.
00:47He's made just one Premier League start all season.
00:50He's been sparingly off the bench. I don't think Newcastle will miss his influence too much.
00:53Of course, it's one less person in the squad for Eddie Howe to pick from, especially with Harvey Barnes' injury.
00:58But I think that's one that Newcastle will sanction and feel that they'll get some money out of.
01:02And they can use that money potentially, either this month or in the summer, to do another deal.
01:06Now, the Lloyd Kelly one is an interesting one. Newcastle value him quite highly.
01:10Of course, the only joint in the summer on free transfers. So any money they make is going to be profit.
01:14And he hasn't hit the ground running at Newcastle. He's had a lot of time on the bench.
01:20Lewis Hall's emergence at left-back has kept him out of that position.
01:24Fabien Cher and Dan Byrne at the beginning of the season were brilliant in centre-half.
01:28Now, Sven Botman's back fit. Lloyd Kelly's probably relegated about the fourth try centre-half.
01:32So, if Newcastle can get money for him, again, you might look at that from a pure profit and money point of view.
01:38That is a good deal. But, as we know, that would, again, mean Newcastle lost an option there.
01:44And that would be one that Eddie Howe is more reluctant to do.
01:46I think Eddie Howe likes Lloyd Kelly. Of course, they work together at Bournemouth.
01:49And he'll be someone that you can – how we'll see Kelly – someone who he can develop over the next season or two.
01:54And maybe has a role in the first team.
01:56However, if the fees that are being discussed online of – if Newcastle can get anywhere around £20 million from him,
02:02that's going to be a thing they're going to have to really consider because that could unlock a lot of PSR headroom.
02:07Not just this month, but in summer as well.
02:10So, that would be one they'll be considering. Juventus, as I said, are the team pressing on him at the minute.
02:14But all the reports, like Eddie Howe said on Friday, are coming from the other clubs, whether that's Juventus, Fenerbahce.
02:19So, right now, Newcastle, until they feel they've got an offer acceptable, they won't accept it.
02:23And I think that's the way they should be doing it.
02:25They're not under pressure to sell, not like this time last year with Elliot Anderson and Kuba Minter going.
02:31They're not under pressure to get rid of players.
02:33So, it'll be interesting to see whether they do get rid of Lloyd Kelly.
02:35But right now, Newcastle have that decision to make.
02:39And then if they do sell, if him and Almiron do leave, then they have a bit of PSR headroom.
02:44As I said, will they reinvest that this month?
02:46I don't think they will.
02:47I see a lot of people online saying, why aren't they reinvesting?
02:52Why aren't they spending?
02:53If they could spend £60 million on Gui, you know, Mark Gahey in summer.
02:56Why is that money now not available?
02:58And the truth is, it is available.
02:59Newcastle can spend as much as they want.
03:01But unfortunately, PSR means whatever they spend, they've got to recoup and fill out their financial sheets.
03:06So, Newcastle could go out and buy Gahey, for example, or someone else for £60, £70 million.
03:11But would a sale of Almiron and Kelly negate that?
03:14It might just, on the balance sheet, it might just be acceptable to do that.
03:18But then you're starting from a blank spot in summer and then you can't get anyone because you've already spent the money in January.
03:25So, the idea that Newcastle aren't spending is one that is true.
03:30Of course, they're not spending.
03:31They haven't spent for 18 months or gone on two years if they don't do it this year.
03:34But they're only not doing that because they need to get their financials right and they need to spend on the right player.
03:39We all blinded almost by that January 2022 they had, where they got, you know, Boon Ogi Morrison, Chris Wooden, Kieran Trippier, Matt Tollett unknown, Dan Byrne, of course.
03:48They were brilliant signers.
03:49It was almost a flawless window.
03:50But they still had to pay a lot of money for those players.
03:52And in January, you have to pay a lot of money for those players, for any player really.
03:55And any player you buy in January is probably going to cost more than they will in the summer.
03:58Not just the six months left on whoever's contract, but also, you know, teams are less desperate in summer.
04:03They know they've got more time to find a replacement.
04:05So Newcastle are probably going to have to overspend this month if they want to get anyone in.
04:08And that's going to be something they want to avoid doing.
04:11PSR encapsulates anything.
04:12And if they overspend on one player, that's then less money they've got to spend on another player.
04:16So Newcastle are just being a bit cautious and not wanting to spend.
04:19Just because they can go and spend the money doesn't mean they have to go and spend it in the first window, on the first player they see that might fit in the team.
04:25Yes, Newcastle might be weaker if they get rid of Almiron and Kelly this month.
04:28And they probably will.
04:29And that is a big risk to take.
04:30Will that be the difference between Champions League, Europa League qualification or even worse?
04:33Who knows?
04:34Only time will tell.
04:35But right now, they have to make a judgment on what's best for them.
04:37Whether they go for someone this month and potentially overspend.
04:40And it may not work because they can't afford any mistakes in the transfer market.
04:43Some of the other teams, Manchester City, Manchester United, Chelsea, they can afford mistakes in the transfer market.
04:48And Newcastle can't afford mistakes.
04:50So they can either go out now and spend any money they get from Kelly and Almiron.
04:54Or they can keep it and wait until summer and have more chance, more opportunity to, again, get rid of some players in the squad.
05:00Build up that bank that they can go spend in summer on players that are going to be more available.
05:04And clubs that are more willing to sell.
05:06So it's a real big dilemma for Paul Mitchell, Eddie Howe and the whole ownership in the whole team.
05:10So it's not one that I certainly envy.
05:12One that many fans will get to see.
05:14Because as I said, Newcastle aren't going to come out and say we've got this money to spend.
05:17Because clubs know that and clubs will take the mick and will not give them the best value for money deal.
05:23So Newcastle have got a lot of things to consider.
05:25But right now, it's probably going to be more outgoings than incomes.
05:28Or certainly more outgoings than incomes.
05:30And yeah, I think between now and when the window closes on 3rd February at 11 o'clock,
05:36I think it'll just be about who Newcastle can get rid of.
05:38And if there's any signings in, which I'll be surprised at speaking right now, hearing what I'm hearing.
05:44I think it'll be surprising to see any transfers come in.
05:46But there is still two weeks to go.
05:48And if one injury could change that, especially when they're big players.
05:51And yeah, so it's at this point in the weekend for Newcastle results wise.
05:56But they go to Southampton next week, hoping to improve on that.
05:59And of course, as I said, with Al Maroney-Kelly deals ticking away in the background,
06:02they'll expect some movement on that at some point.
06:04And if that does, then that could be the domino that falls that helps other deals go by.
06:08But as I said, Newcastle will have to be cautious and they don't want to overspend too much this month.
06:13So yeah, it'll be interesting to see what they do.
06:15And of course, the best way to stay up to date with all the latest Newcastle United transfer news this month
06:19is with the Shields Gazette.
