00:03 >> Well, thanks for being here.
00:04 I apologize for not rebounding tonight.
00:09 That certainly was the difference and we certainly drilled it these
00:14 last couple days and talked about it and emphasize it.
00:19 But if you look at their numbers, they're not outstanding on the glass,
00:24 but we simply didn't get it done.
00:26 And I'm really disappointed by it.
00:30 To get our rebound in really a low possession game,
00:34 by 13 is an enormous number.
00:36 And it's just even an entire game and we get to stop, but
00:40 we just don't come up with the rebound twice in the last couple minutes.
00:46 Just speaks volumes.
00:48 So we didn't get it done and it's disappointing.
00:52 Obviously we had a great crowd, we're sold out.
00:55 Let's go see everybody in the place and students packing it and filling it up.
00:59 But somehow I didn't get the message across that
01:03 rebounding was gonna decide this game and that's what they did.
01:09 So they're a more physical team, way more aggressive,
01:12 way more physical around the basket.
01:16 And our fouls were reaches and arms coming forward.
01:24 And just lack of physicality.
01:26 They clearly were the more aggressive team, the more physical team clearly.
01:30 And they got it done.
01:31 So got a week here now.
01:35 It's hard to come off this loss and have a week.
01:39 I had some guys, I mean, didn't feel well maybe.
01:46 But you can't cancel the game, you gotta come up and you gotta play.
01:49 And we didn't play.
01:51 And we didn't play the physicality we needed to have.
01:54 They were, again, the more physical team.
01:57 I don't know if I can say it, but I'm disappointed by that.
02:00 That I didn't get the message across and I've gotta do a better job.
02:03 >> Coach Terry was in here and said the plan was for
02:05 them they wanted to send a lot of pressure out to the guys guards and
02:08 the pick and rolls.
02:09 I guess how do you think you guys dealt with that?
02:10 >> Yeah, I mean, not great.
02:11 I got better as it went on.
02:12 There was some turnovers early, but at the same time we killed them early,
02:15 offensively, with that same pressure.
02:19 We made some bad decisions.
02:21 I think we forced some drives.
02:22 But if you look at our offensive numbers,
02:24 you're not gonna throw us out the window.
02:29 They hurt us by just simply out rebounding us.
02:31 We got two offensive rebounds, I mean, really.
02:33 Says five, but five of them went out of bounds, team rebounds.
02:38 So I mean, it's pretty hard to compromise that.
02:41 But I think they were just a more physical team around the glass.
02:45 I mean, that's what they were.
02:46 I mean, they had 16 turnovers, we had 14.
02:49 So I don't know if that was, they were more aggressive on the ball screen early,
02:53 but not all the entire time.
02:55 And again, like I said earlier, we hurt them on the ball screens by getting off.
02:59 And we hurt them a lot, but simply put, they finished points around the basket.
03:05 They got second shots, they flew in from the outside.
03:08 I mean, they're the more physical team.
03:15 >> Coach, you had a good stretch to open the game, got out to a ten point lead.
03:18 And then again, to start the second half, what was working for your offense?
03:21 >> Well, I just said earlier, offense, the blitz, if we call it.
03:26 I don't know if it's a blitz, but it was aggressive.
03:27 It was a harder ice, as we call it, a harder hedge.
03:31 And we got off it, we made the right decisions.
03:35 And then the second half, the rebounds,
03:40 to be honest with you, the rebounds just stayed even during those times.
03:43 We weren't gaining on the rebounds.
03:45 So again, even though we had the lead of 10, 12 to start, I didn't feel good.
03:49 I didn't feel good about the baskets we gave up, or
03:51 the offense, or the rebounding, or the numbers where we were at.
03:54 So we made it clear, whoever rebounded the best would win the game.
03:58 And clearly, 14 will get you an 11 point deficit.
04:03 >> The way you guys have played, home and road,
04:06 do you think you guys have played better away?
04:10 >> I mean, we've won some games, and we've won some tough,
04:13 that's a tough places, but I mean, I don't know, we just beat Texas Tech.
04:17 I mean, I don't know, they're good.
04:20 We discussed because we lost to Iowa State, but
04:27 it's hard to end these guys, but I mean, this game we're up 12.
04:32 So I don't know why there's no similarities between the two.
04:37 We were down big early in that one.
04:39 This one we're up.
04:41 We got to defend better.
04:42 I mean, usually the defense, it is surprising that our defense hasn't been
04:46 good enough on the roads, but we've won some games.
04:49 But our offense has been so good.
04:50 I mean, it's been so good.
04:51 And even this game, if you look at it, I mean, we shot, I think we still shot 50%.
04:55 And 14 is not ideal, but it's not off the charts.
04:59 They had 16.
05:01 We shoot the threes.
05:02 We didn't get the line enough.
05:03 Clearly, that was a big factor.
05:04 They're at the free throw line way more than we were, and
05:08 we never got them in foul trouble.
05:11 So those things, but we're not defending.
05:15 I mean, this is the constant.
05:16 We're not defending well enough to win the league.
05:23 We had chances, I guess, to win.
05:26 We're right there as first, second, depending on how things play out.
05:30 But we didn't defend well enough.
05:32 We didn't defend well enough.
05:34 We have gotten some wins, surprisingly, I think on the road,
05:39 by not defending well enough, but this game, we're just not defending well enough.
05:43 Again, and rebound.
05:45 Put them together.
05:46 I mean, the play at the end was, it's a tie game, and we were actually defended.
05:52 Men picked up shots.
05:53 We couldn't come up with a rebound twice.
05:55 This is gonna wear you down.
05:56 >> Well, Bannon said some good shots for you coming off the bench.
05:59 Did he have a good play?
06:01 >> Yeah, I mean, he didn't practice the last couple days.
06:04 He was sick.
06:05 I don't quite know what his status was.
06:07 He's had a couple days of sick, but I mean, you gotta play.
06:10 I mean, you gotta play, you gotta find out.
06:12 And we gotta, you gotta make toughness plays.
06:17 You gotta make, again, it's 14 offensive rebounds for us, for them.
06:23 And like you said, we had seven, it says, but five of them were team rebounds.
06:28 So they probably knocked them out cuz they were sort of beating us to it or
06:33 getting a hand on it.
06:34 So I didn't have our guys ready for the physicality of this game.
06:39 That's something I tried yesterday in practice, but
06:43 we didn't have the response that we needed.
06:48 We had some guys out that weren't feeling well, but you gotta play.
06:52 You gotta play.
06:54 >> What happens at the end of the game, was that just an example of a great player
06:58 hitting a lot of good shots, or was there something more you guys could have been
07:00 doing? >> Well, the one three, it was guarded.
07:02 Well, I mean, that was it.
07:04 The second one, the other one was, I mean,
07:06 it was just not being aggressive enough in a situation.
07:12 No one's a player, but that's on me.
07:19 I mean, I gotta get the mess across.
07:21 I mean, again, you gotta get more free throws.
07:26 I don't know how we get seven free throws.
07:29 I don't know how we get out rebounded by 13.
07:34 And I gotta get the message across that you're not gonna keep winning games
07:39 offensively, which we have been doing.
07:42 Our offensive numbers have been really good in recent weeks.
07:49 And our defensive numbers haven't.
07:50 And today it came through with,
07:52 more so with the second shots that they got, second chance points.
07:58 >> Coach, in spite of some of those frustrations,
08:00 you had a shot with the defense.
08:01 You're still five to four in conference and in the top third of the league.
08:06 How do you evaluate the first nine games that you guys have played and
08:10 kind of carried that?
08:11 >> I mean, again, defensively, it's just not good enough.
08:15 Offensively, and we took some bad shots down the stretch,
08:19 which probably hurt our numbers too as well.
08:21 I mean, that was part of the separation.
08:24 I mean, three three point plays in a row were kind of hard to overcome those.
08:29 But we didn't make decisions, which we have been very good at,
08:36 in our offensive execution.
08:41 But I think it was, I mean,
08:43 what's the change of the game is we gotta break away,
08:46 don't score in traffic there, nothing happened.
08:53 And then they get a foul at the other end.
08:55 We should go up and they go up.
08:57 I mean, really, that's the game.
08:59 We gotta watch the play.
09:00 I mean, but we gotta miss layups or turnovers,
09:06 whatever you wanna call it there, can turn into baskets the other way oftentimes.
09:13 So that was really the turning point of that play right there.
09:16 And they get the end one.
09:18 The late clock three, guarded well.
09:21 Yeah, that was pretty much put us in a tough spot.
09:24 >> Any last question for Coach?
09:27 Okay, thank you.
09:28 >> Thank you.
09:29 I don't know.
