00:00 Vince McMahon is the weirdest person to have ever lived.
00:03 He's fought God and won, fought billionaire Ted and won, sits atop the dominant global
00:07 brand in his industry that also happens to turn out some of the worst content in that
00:11 industry.
00:12 His biggest weakness is a total rejection of weakness as a concept.
00:15 For someone whose career is dedicated to simplifying down what it means to be a good guy or a bad
00:19 guy, he doesn't know what a good guy is.
00:22 Also he walks like this.
00:24 Point is, Vince McMahon fascinates people, from the fans who hate him and pay him, to
00:27 those that deify him.
00:29 He is everything and nothing and God I want to read an honest autobiography of him so
00:33 much.
00:34 One of the things that people tend to agree on is that Vince is a ruthless business genius
00:38 who knows a good thing when he sees it and knows when to buy it.
00:40 Hulk Hogan, raiding the territories, etc.
00:43 But the more you read up on the early days of some of WWE's biggest stars, the more
00:47 you realise Vince might just be the luckiest man in wrestling history.
00:52 I'm Adam Hailing from PartsFarKnown and here are 10 Wrestlers Vince McMahon Initially
00:56 Hated.
00:57 And you know what we don't hate?
00:59 Surfshark.
01:00 Stick around after the list is done for a word from our sponsors.
01:03 10.
01:04 Randy Orton
01:05 Let's talk about this first because it's the most recent story to come to light.
01:07 Next year, Randall Keith Orton will celebrate his 20th continuous year on the main roster
01:11 full time.
01:12 That is a ludicrously long career.
01:14 He's outlasted Cena, he's been a full timer longer than Triple H was, longer than
01:18 Shawn Michaels was.
01:19 The man's put in the years.
01:20 Which makes the apparent fact that Vince wanted no part of him initially even more insane.
01:24 See, before Randy was hitting RKO's, he was hitting AWOL's.
01:29 He enlisted in the Marines in the late 90s before going AWOL on two occasions and receiving
01:33 a dishonourable discharge.
01:35 Vince graduated from military school, which explains just a whole bunch about him, and
01:39 if you cut him, he bleeds troops.
01:40 As such, according to Jim Ross on the Grilling JR podcast, Vince didn't want to sign Randy
01:45 Orton based on his negative past in the military and had to be convinced by good old JR to
01:50 give Randy a second chance.
01:51 I guess you could say that second chance paid off.
01:54 9.
01:55 Samoa Joe
01:56 Absolutely heartbreaking news this week that Samoa Joe has had to vacate the NXT title
02:00 due to injury.
02:01 Talk about people who can't catch a f***ing break.
02:03 In the light of the news, you can't help but wish Joe had found a place in WWE sooner
02:07 when he was more entrenched in his physical prime, because according to an interview with
02:11 Fightful's Sean Ross Sapp, Vince did not want to sign Joe.
02:17 In Samoa Joe's own words, Vince was "vehemently opposed to the idea.
02:22 Some might have thought it was to do with a TNA connection, but in fact Bruce Prichard
02:25 revealed on Something to Wrestle With that it was because it was thought in WWE that
02:29 he was, and I'm quoting again, "a fat Samoan".
02:32 He looked out of shape, he wasn't the body type that Vince liked, and they felt it wouldn't
02:36 work.
02:37 Jesus, don't pull your punches, lad.
02:39 Here's hoping this new development doesn't jeopardise Joe's place in the company.
02:42 Took him long enough to bloody get there.
02:44 8.
02:45 Christian
02:46 When Edging Christian split up, the lyrics to Christian's new operatic theme, his best
02:49 theme by the way, don't @ me with your just close your eyes bullshit, were "Christian,
02:54 Christian, at last, you're on your own", a lovely sentiment that Vince McMahon did
03:00 not agree with.
03:01 To this day, it's a long running wrestling in joke that Vince hates Christian, something
03:06 they even referenced in their sketch show on the network, and honestly, I really shouldn't
03:09 find this funny, but Vince apparently just hated Christian's face.
03:13 He didn't think Christian could connect with the audience according to, again, Bruce
03:16 Prichard, which means Vince definitely didn't watch TNA in the mid 2000s where the instant
03:21 classic was one of the tentpoles of the promotion's hottest period.
03:24 In fact, whenever anyone would suggest anything for Christian to Vince, he would react negatively
03:28 saying stuff like "Oh, god damn, do we have to shoot him, do we have to see that face".
03:34 Like damn Vince, it's just… it's just his face, man.
03:38 7.
03:39 Mick Foley
03:40 And speaking of people that Vince McMahon immediately wanted to throw a tarp over and
03:42 leave on the curb for the bin men, Mrs Foley's baby boy, one of the most endearing men to
03:47 ever lace up a pair of boots.
03:48 Mick Foley got over with three separate characters under Vince's watch and made significant
03:52 contributions towards dragging the company out of the wretched new generation era, which
03:56 again makes it insane that it's one of the most well known cases of someone needing to
04:00 be begged, actually begged, to allow someone else to make money for them.
04:04 Jim Ross wanted to bring in Foley because, I mean, yeah, his work in WCW in Japan, say
04:09 hello, but Vince strongly disliked Cactus Jack.
04:12 Ironic considering that Foley's best WWE match was wrestling as Cactus Jack.
04:16 According to JR on Talk is Jericho, when he suggested hiring Foley, Vince replied "Oh
04:20 no, JR, we're not doing that.
04:22 I'm going to go along with you on most of these things, but not that one."
04:25 Again, luckiest man in the business.
04:27 6.
04:28 Shawn Michaels
04:29 And the hits start coming and they don't stop coming, hey look, at least Vince snapped
04:32 up the Rock.
04:33 That much was fantastic sense, likewise splitting them up and running HBK as the new gen's
04:37 best preening dickhead.
04:38 But when it came down to making Shawn a top guy, Vince had a crazy blind spot and I must
04:43 not keep making jokes about Shawn Michaels' eyes.
04:46 According to Bruce Prichard, who at this point is basically our mole in WWE, when talking
04:50 on Sam Roberts Wrestling Podcast, he described how Vince didn't think HBK was championship
04:54 material, which is like me not thinking that Keith Lee is husband material.
04:58 According to Prichard, whenever creative would pitch Michaels as a face, Vince would respond
05:01 with lines like "That little son of a bitch?
05:04 He'll never be a babyface in this company."
05:07 Then WrestleMania 11 happened and Vince finally saw the light, finally fuelling up the rocket
05:11 for Michaels' eventual coronation at Mania XII.
05:13 Of course, considering the state of the roster in 1995, he didn't really have anyone else
05:17 other than Bret and Shawn, so the decision was pretty much made for him.
05:20 5.
05:21 The Royal Rumble
05:22 Ok, this one's not a wrestler, but I wanted to include it, because it's literally the
05:25 greatest WWE stipulation of all time.
05:26 It's a 100% stroke of genius and I cannot believe that Vince initially didn't like
05:31 it.
05:32 In fact, worse than that, Vince hated the concept of the Royal Rumble, so much so that
05:35 he would ridicule the match innovator Pat Patterson whenever it came up.
05:38 Genuinely, it's the only match that I watched every single year without fail, even when
05:42 I stopped watching wrestling, and it almost never existed.
05:44 In fact, it was only because Dick Ebersole, a TV executive who worked with Vince on Saturday
05:48 Night's main event, was pressing Vince for a special idea, a one-off wrestling special
05:53 for TV, when Vince turned to Pat and said "alright, tell Dick that stupid idea you've
05:57 got".
05:58 Vince then told Pat to book the first Rumble entirely by himself, because he still didn't
06:02 believe in it, and now, 33 f***ing years later, it's still the best thing on WWE's calendar,
06:07 and ironically, it's a match that Vince has f***ing won.
06:10 Vince also didn't like the Money in the Bank match concept either when he first heard
06:13 it, which leads us nicely to…
06:14 4.
06:15 Chris Jericho
06:16 Heard of him?
06:17 Y2J is up there in terms of having one of the most influential and important wrestling
06:20 careers of all time.
06:22 ECW, WCW, WWE, AEW, even New Japan, the guys won Impact match away from working everywhere,
06:28 but getting him through the front door at WWE was a struggle.
06:31 According to Jim Ross in his book Under the Black Hat, it was a huge negotiation process
06:35 between him and Vince to bring Jericho on board, which makes almost no sense when you
06:39 consider Y2J and The Attitude Era great talk, a great work, a handsome, a catchphrase machine.
06:43 Why did Vince not want him?
06:45 In JR's own words, "his f***ing height".
06:48 Oh Vince, you silly sausage.
06:49 Jericho even wore lips in his shoes when he first came to work for Mr. McMahon, that's
06:54 how land of the giants it was.
06:55 Even when Jericho had made it to the company, the man himself revealed it was something
06:59 of a struggle for a different reason, because at the time, Vince couldn't fathom the idea
07:03 of pushing a Canadian as a babyface.
07:04 Ah yes, those famously rude and obnoxious Canadians.
07:08 But to be fair to Vince, when has a Canadian ever gotten over?
07:10 When?
07:11 When I ask you.
07:12 Number 3, The Undertaker.
07:13 So I think Vince might have the worst instincts in the world, which by the way at this point
07:17 in the list, I don't want people watching this to infer that we think Vince is terrible
07:21 at his job.
07:22 That's why you surround yourself with good minds, people you trust, people like JR who
07:25 can convince you to take a risk with a certain person.
07:28 Vince has other strengths, like biting this bit of metal, or walking, key strengths.
07:33 But no, Vince was shown Mark Calloway, the man who'd go on to become Mark Lord the
07:37 Dark Lord, and his immediate honest to God reaction was "that's just another tall
07:41 basketball player with red hair, I don't see anything special in him".
07:45 Vince legit watched a match that me and Mark Calloway had with Lex Luger in WCW at the
07:49 Great American Bash in 1990, a match that Taker worked with a dislocated hip specifically
07:54 because he knew he was going to meet Vince the next day, and Vince tried to cancel that
07:58 meeting with the man who went on to become the greatest gimmick in the history of the
08:02 business.
08:03 Number 2, Steve Austin.
08:04 Is there anyone that made Vince millions of dollars that he actually wanted to sign in
08:08 the first place?
08:09 Well yes, Hulk Hogan and okay fair enough Vince.
08:11 But literally everyone else other than The Rock seems to have succeeded explicitly despite
08:16 Vince McMahon.
08:17 And even then The Rock wasn't getting over with his initial gimmick.
08:19 Steve Austin made so much money for Vince during the atudeer that even Scrooge McDuck
08:24 would drown in it.
08:25 On Talk is Jericho, Vince Russo claimed that when Austin came into the company as the ringmaster,
08:29 McMahon was dead set against him talking.
08:31 Steve Austin, one of the greatest talkers of all time.
08:34 Vince McMahon told Russo that the million dollar man had to do all of Austin's talking
08:38 for him.
08:39 It's a perception that's been verified by Jake "The Snake" Roberts, the subject
08:41 of the infamous Austin 316 promo.
08:44 When Roberts told Vince that Austin was the next big thing, Vince replied "you kidding
08:48 me Jake?
08:49 This guy?
08:50 He'll never make it past 5th, 6th match.
08:52 He's not a main eventer."
08:53 In case you didn't know, that's Vince talking about one of the most lucrative main
08:56 eventers in wrestling history, but you know, hindsight's 20/20.
08:59 Isn't that right?
09:00 NUMBER ONE - JOHN CENA Yes indeed.
09:03 The man for whom Vince had so much faith in as the top guy in all of wrestling that he
09:07 refused to turn him heel and drove away a significant portion of his fanbase.
09:11 Vince's initial reaction to John Cena is f***ing hilarious because oh the road not
09:15 travelled.
09:16 In 2002, who else, Bruce Prichard, Cena had just been signed by the company and was walking
09:20 around backstage looking like, well, like the prototype did, which is all sorts of hamburger
09:25 insane.
09:26 Vince took one look at the man who'd become the face of his company, turned to Bruce and
09:30 said, and I quote "get that walking talking steroid billboard out of our backstage".
09:36 I mean sure, almost a decade earlier the steroid trial had almost brought down the company.
09:40 And sure, John Cena looked like he had invented steroids at the time, but just imagine if Vince
09:45 hadn't been talked down.
09:46 I think a lot of us criticise Vince for his perceived stubbornness and refusal to budge
09:49 in the face of criticism, but if this list has taught us nothing else, it's that if
09:53 Vince had actually been as stubborn as he's accused of, then wrestling history would look
09:57 very, very different.
09:59 Hey, you've just finished watching one of our lists, we super appreciate that, and now
