00:00 You know Susan, taking care of the skin is just for show.
00:05 Hmm, that's not the mindset you should have.
00:08 Because the wound you thought would disappear, can actually grow back.
00:13 So if you have time, you shouldn't waste it to consult a doctor.
00:18 That's the story of Oscar Oida.
00:24 When it comes to tuberculosis or TB, the first thing that comes to mind is the repeated swelling and difficulty in breathing.
00:32 But there is also a type of TB that has the effect of
00:36 wounding and when it grows, it can be eaten by the skin.
00:47 Queenie is now 75 years old. The effect of a disease that was once a mystery to her,
00:54 her nose seems to be pierced.
00:58 I felt symptoms when I was 12 years old.
01:03 I always have a loss of blood and when it collapses, especially when the blood is sucked.
01:11 Queenie left the symptoms because she thought it was just a hot weather.
01:17 The piercing of the nose was replaced by a wound.
01:21 It's like it's just a split here on the side of my nose.
01:25 It's getting wet and it's also swelling. It's very painful. It's very tight.
01:32 Queenie moved to the hospital just to find an answer to her worrying wound in her nose.
01:40 We tried to check up in the hospital but there was no finding on my condition.
01:47 They couldn't find out where it came from and how it happened because my condition is very rare.
01:55 With the help of a pastor, Queenie was consulted by a specialist.
02:00 Here, she felt something strange. She found out that she has skin tuberculosis.
02:07 It's a sign that the TB in the nose is bad when it experiences skin tuberculosis.
02:14 According to dermatologist Dr. Jarish Lau Ang,
02:17 Skin tuberculosis or what we call cutaneous TB is an extra pulmonary tuberculosis.
02:25 It means that tuberculosis is not limited to the nose or lungs.
02:30 The spread of infection can be from blood or from the colon or it can be a direct spread from open wound.
02:38 Just like pulmonary TB or TB in the nose, cutaneous TB has the same cause or sign.
02:44 Which is the most common is Mycobacterium tuberculosis.
02:48 It's a bacteria that needs oxygen to live.
02:52 That's why the first thing that is really attacked is our nose.
02:56 In Queenie's case, because the bacteria in her nose is more exposed or bad because of the blood,
03:02 the infection is more severe which results in an injury and it seems like her nose is melting.
03:09 The sign is like we thought that there's an ulcer that the wound is not healing.
03:14 And if it's not healed, it can have scarring.
03:18 That's why the part of our body that is affected by cutaneous TB is melting.
03:24 Queenie has been under the treatment for 6 months for skin tuberculosis.
03:30 She also needs to have an operation on her nose that was damaged by the illness.
03:34 They took my flesh, a little bone and skin.
03:39 You should know that the treatment for skin TB is the same as TB in the lung.
03:45 We have programs actually, what we call TB DOTS program.
03:49 There are old health centers that have free detection, others are getting x-rays.
03:55 Even though, Queenie's face is covered by the pain she went through,
04:01 she is thankful that there are good intentions that gave her a new life.
04:07 I'm happy. I'm very happy because I'm better now than when I suffered for so many years.
04:15 I can communicate with people outside.
04:19 I can now talk to people.
04:23 I'm Oscar Oidat and that's the story you need to know.
