00:00 >> I know it's been a couple days since a tough night at Waco,
00:02 just since you've had a couple days to watch the film.
00:04 What was the takeaway from that game?
00:07 >> We've been guarding the three point line fairly well.
00:12 They got really hot, but after watching the tape,
00:14 I thought there was a lot of opportunities we could have played better defense.
00:16 I thought we've been pretty good.
00:22 If we have a turnover, our transition defense after a turnover,
00:26 I think they turned almost all of our turnovers into baskets.
00:30 They capitalized on that.
00:31 So our turnover defense has to be better when we do turn it over.
00:34 And so I thought those were, I mean, guarding that three point line,
00:40 I mean, they had nine threes.
00:42 And I thought a number of them we could have been better on.
00:46 And I think we all felt that way after watching the tape.
00:49 And you gotta give them credit.
00:51 They were really shooting it well.
00:52 They have a great inside out threat.
00:54 And but if you're gonna win at Baylor in that scenario,
00:59 the way they played, you gotta play really well.
01:01 You gotta be on it.
01:02 We didn't play really well in a lot of areas.
01:05 And those are the ones we noticed the most was we could have guarded that three
01:10 point line better on, meaning switches.
01:12 We messed up a couple switches, transition defense, and a turnover.
01:17 Offensive rebound kick out for a three.
01:19 And I think they really, I mean, it was 20-20 and
01:22 they hit three threes in like 60 seconds.
01:24 And all of a sudden it got, it was a nine point lead just like that.
01:26 >> Too early to know about Waldo and John?
01:30 >> Yeah, a little too early.
01:31 We'll know a little bit more later today.
01:33 >> Going back to John, when did that all happen?
01:36 Was it been- >> It was in the Oklahoma State game.
01:38 >> It was bad luck.
01:39 >> Yeah.
01:40 >> What have you seen in prep this week from some of the other guys that did
01:44 mock skating, the confidence that they were ready to step up?
01:46 >> Yeah, so yesterday we gave them Wednesday off.
01:50 It's our mandatory day off and much needed.
01:55 But yesterday, Mox has gotta be ready, Caden's gotta be ready,
01:59 Luke's gotta be ready.
02:00 We're gonna have some different guys in there.
02:03 And that's an opportunity to step up.
02:06 There's always been scenarios, man.
02:07 One man goes down, next man up.
02:09 And now we got two men down.
02:11 So we have to have a couple guys step up.
02:13 And other guys, I mean, it's sports.
02:18 That happens in sports when you lose guys.
02:20 And I really feel that you're gonna see Mox a little bit more.
02:24 We really haven't seen him a lot since the preseason.
02:27 Caden Cooper to be ready for him and Luke to be in there.
02:33 And heck, Yaya Kato.
02:35 If Yaya gets in there, all hands on deck.
02:38 That's what I told everybody, all hands on deck.
02:40 >> Is the fact that, at least with Waldo and John,
02:42 you're still evaluating a sign that this is relatively shorter term than any major
02:46 league event?
02:47 >> Yeah, I'd like to think it's shorter term.
02:50 That's what I believe on both of them.
02:53 We'll have to wait and see with John.
02:54 It is, but right now there's no indication that it's season ending for
03:01 either one of them.
03:02 >> You've rolled this season primarily with your eight guys.
03:04 A lot of programs across the country are not thinner rotations,
03:09 but not going as deep.
03:10 Do you think in this era, poor little guys moving around, not being in programs for
03:14 multiple years has made it harder to build a deeper rotation?
03:18 >> I don't know.
03:19 I haven't done a deep dive in that, whether the portal's about not having a,
03:23 I don't know, to answer your question on that.
03:26 I know that, like Kansas was down McCullough these last two games, and
03:30 I know that, but now they're back in full strength.
03:33 So it happens, and you gotta adjust.
03:35 Different guys, different spots, different scenarios and
03:37 situations when you're used to this guy taking the ball out of bounds during a press.
03:43 And there's a lot of little things we were talking about the last 24 hours
03:46 about with new personnel in the mix.
03:49 Well, we haven't.
03:50 We've been fairly blessed this whole year of rolling with those eight guys.
03:55 And now it's these last game and tonight there's gonna be scenarios.
04:00 But with that, just like in any adversity of anything, it's opportunity.
04:04 It's opportunity for someone to come in and step up,
04:07 someone that's already playing to step up, and that's what we gotta have.
04:10 >> You mentioned that last part of it.
04:11 You're talking about guys deeper in the bench that maybe need to step up.
04:13 But how much do the veterans, the guys that haven't seen the floor a lot,
04:16 need to step up?
04:17 >> So the same guys that started in Lawrence are gonna start tomorrow.
04:20 With Jalen Moore, Sam, Otega, Javian and Lowe's.
04:25 And they started in Norman.
04:26 We had our moments in Norman where we were right there.
04:29 He actually took the lead in the second half.
04:30 So these guys have played them.
04:32 They know they're in the best teams in the country.
04:34 But it's not like they haven't played them or it's gonna be all new to them.
04:38 So those guys that have played in this game,
04:43 we're for sure counting on a lot to play well.
04:45 >> Okay, the struggles on the road.
04:46 How much do you guys talk about making the first punch,
04:49 the key in this thing out of the gate?
04:52 >> It's more been about, yeah, for sure for us, and
04:54 that it's been about saying they struggle.
04:56 Cuz I don't, I mean, obviously last game without McCullough and
05:00 everybody in there, he's probably not been on that kind of a side before.
05:04 Cuz he's one of the best coaches that we've had in our profession.
05:07 But sometimes it can snowball.
05:11 So I don't look at it like they don't play well on the road.
05:14 I mean, they've lost a couple on the road, but
05:16 it wasn't like, I mean, it's hard to win on the road in this league.
05:19 It's hard to win when you're getting teams best shots on the road.
05:24 And so we look at more of what do we have to do to win?
05:28 What do we have to do to win more than focusing on the past with that?
05:32 What we have to win tomorrow is they do an outstanding job
05:37 offensively of picking you apart.
05:39 The interior with Hunter down there, KJ, McCullough's back,
05:44 he really heard us up.
05:46 I think Furphy's playing great.
05:48 Elite offensive rebounder, we gotta control the glass.
05:51 So we're more thinking about not the past with them,
05:55 it's more of what do we have to do tomorrow to win the game?
05:58 >> How big will Sam's effort be tomorrow?
06:01 >> Been big.
06:01 Sam's gotta be big.
06:02 I mean, I know, I remember he came out as sore as he'd been all year,
06:07 banging up against Hunter in that game, but that's part of it.
06:11 And I think our guys are really looking forward to the challenge.
06:13 I felt like they did some really good things in Lawrence, but
06:18 they didn't do enough.
06:19 And it was a little bit of them, a little bit of things we could have done better,
06:22 and I just feel like we could have done more.
06:24 And I think they feel like it.
06:26 There's a huge respect for their program and the players they have on that team.
06:30 But there's an edge that I think they have,
06:34 knowing that the opportunity we have.
06:37 >> When you look at the teams that have beat Kansas this year,
06:39 is there a common theme, things that they were able to do successfully to beat
06:42 the Jayhawks?
06:43 >> I think it's been a little bit different each time.
06:45 I don't think there's one recipe.
06:47 I mean, you've gotta play really well.
06:49 You're not gonna do it if you don't play really well.
06:51 You gotta make some shots.
06:52 You gotta rebound.
06:53 And they take care of the ball so
06:58 well that you better take care of the ball.
07:01 And we had a bunch of turnovers there in Lawrence to start.
07:04 They had two the whole game.
07:05 So they're gonna take care of the ball.
07:06 So there's no one recipe.
07:09 It's just they make you play your best, and you gotta play your best.
07:14 >> What are you mentioning Mox is someone who might be called upon,
07:17 even though he hasn't played a lot, no, no, during the season.
07:20 What have you seen from his development, and just how do you kind of preach
07:22 staying ready to someone who hasn't been on the rotation regularly?
07:25 >> The one thing about Mox is he is older.
07:28 He's played a lot of games.
07:29 So that's the one benefit is he is an older young man.
07:35 And what also I think has been good for Mox is he's kept his mind right.
07:40 He's absolutely in practice every day.
07:45 Of course he wants to play and he just hasn't had his number called.
07:49 With JV and Lowe's staying healthy and those guys doing really well.
07:51 But in practice, our guys got confidence in them.
07:55 He runs the goal team a lot in practice.
07:58 He does a lot of good things.
07:59 And he's older, so for him, I think he's excited about this opportunity.
08:04 >> [INAUDIBLE]
08:14 >> I think it's awesome.
08:17 I think I'm a big part of your past, creates your future.
08:22 And I was in college when the ball was going on.
08:25 I was in college when they went to the National Championship against Kansas.
08:29 I was in college watching the fastest team I had seen at that point play.
08:34 And so, and then I got to know him, coaching against him when he was at TCU and
08:41 everything, when I was at Texas A&M in my profession.
08:45 And he's a for sure Hall of Famer.
08:49 He needs to be in the Hall of Fame.
08:53 His impact on a storied program is profound,
08:56 of what Billy Tubbs was synonymous with Oklahoma basketball,
09:02 especially when I was coming up.
09:03 And I love we're honoring him.
09:05 There's a ton of former players coming back.
09:06 And it's apropos that it's Kansas.
09:11 I know they played in the National Championship game.
09:13 And for everybody around, it's a great night to honor a legend,
09:19 a for sure should be Hall of Fame coach, Billy Tubbs.
