00:01 "Guys, whatever's in there is big and it's moving fast. Drive!"
00:04 "Go, go!"
00:05 Welcome to WatchMojo,
00:06 and today we're counting down our picks for the most notable upcoming films
00:10 that are selling themselves on the audience's love for the original property.
00:14 "I smell what you're stepping in, Sensei."
00:16 "Your little cinematic universe is about to change forever."
00:20 Number 10, Roadhouse.
00:24 "Before we start, do you have insurance?"
00:26 "What?"
00:27 "Your coverage good, like, you have dental?"
00:29 "Oh, haha."
00:30 Nothing screams the 1980s quite like Joel Silver and Patrick Swayze.
00:34 Now, Roadhouse was not a huge winner back in the summer of 1989.
00:39 It did good, not great business, scoring just over $60 million,
00:42 and earned pretty bad reviews with five Razzie nominations.
00:47 "You're too stupid to have a good time."
00:49 It's not really the type of movie that screams for a remake,
00:54 yet Amazon is releasing one in March,
00:57 starring Jake Gyllenhaal as a former UFC fighter working at the titular Florida Roadhouse.
01:02 We're cautiously optimistic given the talents of Gyllenhaal and director Doug Liman,
01:06 who has worked on films like Edge of Tomorrow and American Made.
01:10 "Now God above has blessed this great country with new riches, Mr. Seal."
01:15 Number 9, The Fall Guy.
01:17 "So how have you been?"
01:17 "God, I hate that thumbs-up, stunt-guy stuff."
01:22 And speaking of the 1980s, let's talk about The Fall Guy.
01:25 This was a popular show on ABC that ran for five seasons between 1981 and 1986.
01:31 It follows Lee Majors as Colt Severs,
01:34 a Hollywood stuntman/bounty hunter who catches the bad guys using his specific set of skills.
01:40 On May 3rd, it'll be Ryan Gosling's turn to play Colt,
01:44 who is tasked with finding a missing actor played by Aaron Taylor-Johnson.
01:48 "Why me?"
01:48 "You're a stuntman, nobody's gonna notice you, that's your job, no offense."
01:52 "I mean, some take it."
01:54 It not only plays on our nostalgia for 80s TV,
01:57 but also our thirst for goofy action comedies,
02:00 which is a genre you don't see much of nowadays.
02:03 And if we have faith in anyone, it's Ryan Gosling.
02:07 "They were trying to kill me, and not in a fun way."
02:11 Number 8, Untitled Karate Kid Movie.
02:14 "Who acts on act, acts off act, contemplate."
02:19 Yep, it's another Karate Kid film.
02:21 The original movie was a smashing success in 1984, grossing $130 million,
02:27 and the cultural obsession has not stopped since.
02:31 This untitled sixth film will not be connected to Cobra Kai,
02:35 and will instead directly follow the 2010 movie starring Jaden Smith.
02:40 "Oh, Mr. Han. Man, this is the one Bruce Lee had. Great."
02:47 Jackie Chan will reprise his role as Mr. Han,
02:51 and Ralph Macchio will also make an appearance as Daniel LaRusso.
02:55 Macchio's involvement is the very definition of nostalgia bait,
02:59 as proven by the incredible success of Cobra Kai.
03:02 Details about the sixth film are scarce at this time,
03:05 but considering the recent success of the TV series,
03:08 we can see it doing extremely well.
03:10 "You're the best friend I ever had."
03:12 "Are you pretty okay too?"
03:19 Number 7 - Ghostbusters Frozen Empire
03:23 "I've been waiting 40 years for this."
03:25 No, this isn't the ghost of the Ghostbusters franchise.
03:28 The series is alive and well, and this is the brand new entry.
03:31 Frozen Empire is the direct sequel to Afterlife,
03:34 which itself relied on nostalgia for most of its emotional core.
03:37 "I'm sorry. I didn't believe you."
03:40 Many people liked it, so now we're getting another one.
03:44 The concept is certainly fresh,
03:46 concerning a new monster that freezes New York City under a layer of ice.
03:50 But for fans of the original film,
03:52 this movie is a certified checklist of returnees.
03:55 The old New York firehouse,
03:57 all of the OG Ghostbusters minus Harold Ramis,
04:00 even library ghosts Janine and Walter Pekar all here,
04:03 and all have captured our imaginations in a colorful nostalgia beam.
04:08 "Can I be of any help?"
04:09 "Melnitz in uniform."
04:12 "Yeah."
04:13 Number 6 - Alien Romulus
04:15 "You sure it took him into the air shaft?"
04:17 "Disappeared into one of the cooling ducts."
04:20 "No question, he's using the air ducts to move around."
04:23 Let's be honest here, the Alien franchise has been
04:27 kind of dormant since Aliens nearly, um, 40 years ago.
04:31 Many people don't like the follow-ups,
04:33 and while Prometheus has its fans,
04:35 it's often criticized for its plotting,
04:38 especially in relation to the alien mythology.
04:41 "I guess it's a good thing you can't be disappointed."
04:43 "Yes."
04:45 Well, enter Alien Romulus,
04:47 a standalone film directed by Fede Alvarez
04:49 that takes place between the first and second movies.
04:52 While it will likely ignore the events and characters of those films,
04:56 it is nevertheless playing on our nostalgia for the franchise's glory days,
05:00 when good storytelling and gorgeous practical effects reign supreme.
05:04 Let's just hope this one keeps things simple.
05:06 "Move those! Move those! Get out!
05:10 Oh!
05:11 No, not that!
05:13 Find the other way, girl!"
05:15 Number 5 - Gladiator 2
05:18 "And I will have my vengeance, in this life or the next."
05:23 Even at 86 years old, Ridley Scott is releasing historical epics
05:27 and showing the youngins how it's done.
05:29 Just one week before the director turns 87, he'll release Gladiator 2,
05:33 the direct follow-up to his best picture-winning masterpiece
05:36 that became a cultural sensation.
05:38 This movie has been worked on in some capacity since 2001,
05:42 but script problems and financial difficulties at DreamWorks
05:46 kept it in development hell for years.
05:48 Well, okay, decades.
05:49 But the world will finally experience the payoff on November 22nd,
05:53 with Gladiator 2 likely blending the old with the new in many exciting ways.
05:59 "Striking story.
06:00 Now the people want to know how the story ends."
06:04 Number 4 - Deadpool and Wolverine
06:08 "I'm the messiah.
06:09 I am."
06:11 "Marvel Jesus."
06:12 The entire MCU is basically riding on the shoulders of Deadpool and Wolverine,
06:17 but we have faith that it will do well.
06:20 Why?
06:20 A combination of Deadpool and heavy doses of nostalgia.
06:24 The latter comes in the form of Hugh Jackman's Wolverine,
06:27 who has been rocking the big screen since the original X-Men
06:30 all the way back in 2000.
06:32 "You actually go outside in these things?
06:34 What would you prefer?
06:35 Yellow spandex?"
06:37 While Logan was the perfect send-off for the beloved character,
06:40 he returns to theaters yet again,
06:43 this time teaming up with Ryan Reynolds' foul-mouthed smart aleck.
06:46 Jackman has promised that Deadpool and Logan will have a quote,
06:50 "quarreling dynamic."
06:51 And we can't wait to see the sparks fly.
06:54 "Don't just stand there, you ape.
06:56 Give me a hand up.
06:57 No, I'm actually okay.
07:00 Thank you very much."
07:01 Number 3 - Beetlejuice Beetlejuice
07:05 "What do you think of this?
07:06 [Screaming]
07:10 You like it?"
07:10 It's been 36 years,
07:12 but we're finally getting a follow-up to the acclaimed 80s classic Beetlejuice.
07:16 All the stars are here,
07:17 including Michael Keaton as the titular character,
07:20 and both Winona Ryder and Catherine O'Hara as Lydia and Delia Deetz.
07:24 Now that's an 80s cast if we've ever heard one.
07:27 "Now what do you think?
07:28 You think I'm qualified?"
07:30 They'll be reuniting with director Tim Burton,
07:33 who has been working on a Beetlejuice sequel in some capacity since the early 90s.
07:37 His involvement will guarantee excellence,
07:40 and we can't wait to see what Michael Keaton does with the character after nearly 40 years.
07:45 Beetlejuice is back from the dead indeed.
07:48 "Are you a ghost too?"
07:49 "I'm the ghost with the most, babe."
07:52 Number 2 - Twisters
07:54 "It's Tyler Owens.
07:56 Calls himself Tornado Wrangler."
07:59 Many people have fond memories of Twister,
08:02 one of the quintessential disaster films of the 1990s.
08:05 Frankly, we're surprised a sequel took this long,
08:08 considering the massive success of the first film
08:10 and the nostalgia warmth it holds for the 90s.
08:13 "Cow.
08:13 I gotta go, Julia, we got cows."
08:16 And fear not,
08:19 Twisters will play into that nostalgia.
08:22 The story will reportedly focus on the daughter of Joe and Bill,
08:25 and it was shot on location in Oklahoma,
08:27 just as the first movie was.
08:30 But there's enough here to keep things fresh,
08:32 including a brand new cast and 21st century visual effects.
08:36 We are so here for the carnage.
08:38 "We got twins!
08:39 Twins!"

08:59 Beverly Hills Cop - Axl F
09:01 If the other movies on this list were plastic nostalgia bait,
09:13 then this is a juicy wriggling worm.
09:16 Axl F will be the fourth movie in the franchise,
09:19 following the massive disappointment that was Beverly Hills Cop 3.
