00:00 The Indie Film Fest is a community driven event that is funded by the people, for the
00:05 people to help nurture and grow Phoenix artists' economy.
00:09 Joining us today is Candice Hamina, did I say it, Hamina?
00:13 Hamana.
00:14 Hamana, sorry Candice, Hamana, who's here to talk about the festival and how we can
00:17 support this and it's very important, especially this time of year in the industry.
00:23 My son's an independent film artist, maker.
00:25 Oh, I love that, yeah.
00:26 And so this is important here to do and what I love is that we have all this talent here
00:31 in the Phoenix and Arizona community.
00:34 Absolutely, so the Indie Film Fest is in its sixth year of programming and this year is
00:40 special because it's spanned out across multiple venues.
00:44 We want to make sure that we are accessible and affordable and provide a space for the
00:50 local community to come out and celebrate our independent filmmakers, creatives, and
00:56 designers.
00:57 So, it's really a fantastic way to showcase the best film talent here in the Valley.
01:02 Yeah, and the thing is that you said it's spread out a couple of different places, but
01:05 what's very important too is that the money that is spent going to this by people is going
01:10 back into helping those, of course, artists here in our own backyard.
01:15 Absolutely, 100%.
01:16 And I think that's what makes the Indie Film Fest so special is that we're really taking
01:21 into consideration the amount of time and passion that our filmmakers bring to their
01:27 projects and we want to make sure that every ticket sale that happens for the film festival
01:33 goes directly back to our filmmakers.
01:37 Let's talk about some of the films here because are they all short films or are they long
01:40 films too or are all different types?
01:42 There's different types.
01:43 We've got short films tonight.
01:45 So tonight's program is the Original Storytellers Night.
01:50 It features our partner organization, Cahokia PHX, of which I am a member.
01:56 And so we really highlight indigenous storytellers.
02:00 So tonight we are showcasing a film starring Lily Gladstone called Little Chief.
02:07 And so we're excited to bring that to the programming tonight and then tomorrow night
02:12 we will be back at the Phoenix Center for the Arts for additional film screenings, filmmakers
02:20 panel discussion, and then we'll wrap up on Saturday with more celebration and the Grand
02:26 Jury Award winning ceremony.
02:27 Wow, this is great.
02:28 This is so important again to our indie filmmakers and there's so many here because it's kind
02:32 of interesting.
02:33 A lot of people during the pandemic came from LA to be here that were actually from here
02:39 and that's why I love that they're coming back to work here, especially our different
02:43 communities and doing this and supporting them.
02:45 So let's talk about how people can get involved with the Indie Film Festival, even not just
02:51 right now, but going forward so important.
02:53 Yeah, absolutely.
02:54 So there are really three main ways that our community can rise up and support the Indie
03:00 Film Fest.
03:01 The first of course is to come out tonight, buy your ticket.
03:05 We've got shows tonight, tomorrow, and on Saturday.
03:09 We have a hot pink carpet, hence the hot pink pants, and we want everybody to have that
03:14 hot pink moment.
03:17 So they can come out and support the festival in person.
03:20 They can also visit the website and make a contribution to the GoFundMe page, which is
03:26 basically a project that is set up to continue this ongoing support year round, not just
03:33 during the festival.
03:35 And then they can like and share and follow us on social media @IndieFilmFest on Instagram,
03:42 Facebook, Twitter I believe, and then also Cahokia PHX.
03:46 That's our organization and it is our third year of partnering with the Indie Film Fest,
03:52 so we're really excited to bring the program.
03:54 And are most of the films are people from Phoenix, right?
03:57 Or are there different ones from all over?
04:00 They're from all over.
04:02 This indigenous film screen actually includes a film from a Tanzanian film producer, and
04:08 then I know we also had producers fly out from the East Coast to showcase their work
04:13 here.
04:14 So we have people coming in from all over the world actually now, so we're very excited.
04:19 I like that.
04:20 And I gotta tell people, you're gonna wanna go see these movies now because you never
04:24 know, there might be an Oscar winner in them, they might go right to the Oscars, and that's
04:29 what's so great about these indie films now, they're starting to accept them more into
04:33 doing stuff.
04:34 Absolutely, and tonight's special programming includes a film pitch competition, and one
04:40 of our guest judges is Charlie Hogan, who is one of the key lead actors in Fry Bread
04:47 Face and Me, which was a Netflix hit.
04:49 So we've got so much going on and we're just excited to bring this amazing quality program
04:57 to the valley and to all the filmmakers.
04:59 That's gonna be awesome.
05:00 Candice, this is great, again, like I said, big support to the indie films with my son
05:04 and everybody, so you gotta go out and support, so information is right there on the screen,
05:08 how you can find out more about the Indie Film Fest, and we'll have it on azdailymix.com.
05:13 So thank you very much.
05:14 Sounds awesome.
05:14 - Awesome.
