Analyzing whether the San Francisco 49ers wide receivers are getting better or worse.
Transcript
00:00 Let's talk wide receivers are the wide receivers on the 49ers getting better or worse D Bo Samuel be 29 next year Brandon Iuke
00:06 Assuming he'll be back next year and Juwan James a restrictive free agent
00:10 This is an interesting one grant because it's not like just one fell swoop, right?
00:16 Even though we didn't get you know, like take running backs for instance
00:20 We didn't get all of the production that we will want to see out of the running back
00:24 Room, but you know, there's a reason for that. It was capped off by one man
00:29 He took all the reps
00:30 and
00:32 For this one as a group
00:37 Fuck dick there
00:42 As a group
00:46 They're getting worse. Yeah, they're getting worse and I hate to say it they're getting worse
00:54 The Super Bowl was that was the cherry on top I mean I wanted I looked at so many things in my lucky Brooks came out
01:01 And was taking lucky Brooks came off the third turnbuckle. He really
01:05 Was Bucky Brooks
01:08 They can't get open they run bad routes they can't get open versus man like he really I mean tell me how you really feel
01:17 He went hard
01:18 But I have to agree with them in certain instances like it was the Super Bowl you guys got manned up
01:25 I'll be about not no slouches. They weren't bad corners, but
01:28 They're no better than the level of which we talked about
01:32 You guys are on as far as um wide receivers like nobody we've been talking about Trent McDuffie or Jerry's need
01:39 Any less than they've been talking about Brandon I you could evil Samuel and they flopped they couldn't get open
01:44 Um, there were a lot of instances where you know
01:48 This is a conversation that I feel like we're gonna have to grow into
01:52 But I'll say this and I'll leave this conversation here
01:55 There's a conversation where Brock can't get BA the ball versus very good man coverage. We're not ready for that
02:02 but there's a whole conversation about that if BA stays as opposed to someone like
02:08 Justin as a
02:10 Exactly as opposed to somebody who can really throw off
02:13 Platform and literally put the ball anywhere that it needs to be
02:17 All right, so there were a lot of routes where BA was open a half a step is open in the NFL
02:24 I know that we get really spoiled by this offense and guys running free and basically having two to three yards of space at all
02:32 Times when they get the ball thrown in them, that's what we're used to seeing but in traditional NFL
02:38 I have a step is open. All right, and you got to be able to throw that guy the ball
02:42 so there were a lot of routes where
02:46 BA BA for instance was open and Brock looked off of him because he just didn't even deem the route to be open
02:53 so there's that that's a whole conversation for another time, but
02:57 as a whole
03:00 I would say that their production lacked the most when it got leaned on the most and that's in the Super Bowl
03:07 Offensively, we led the league in rushing. That's not really saying anything in today's NFL
03:12 but
03:14 Another thing that you have to look at is that for the production that we didn't get out of the receivers
03:19 Um, they pretty much had a light workload throughout the entire season. We rank last in
03:24 Pass attempts in the league, right? We don't even have the most potent pass a team
03:29 Passing attack in the league and for them to struggle in those areas. Um, it's damning. So let's get to it
03:37 Ronnie Bell, you got to get stronger. Love you to death kid, but you got to get stronger
03:43 You have to be more reliable. Um, if you're if you're gonna be here, uh
03:46 Then you're gonna have to actually show improve in that position
03:50 Juwan Jennings, hold on. I forgot someone
03:54 Go go go who'd I forget Danny Gray
03:58 You're so right, hey Danny, yeah forget Danny Gray. He's still on the team. Hey, is there any on the team?
04:06 All right. All right. Let's do it. Hey, Danny. How you doing?
04:12 Sorry, I'm not trying to be a jerk, but he's here
04:15 All right, okay. All right, I'm gonna talk about tiny of his price he's gone but Danny Gray what's up what can he can he
04:23 Help he's he has speed they need it. I don't know. What can you do? I mean
04:28 Danny
04:32 We're a miracle status at this stage of the game you gotta get some type of consistency with your hands
04:38 I think that's why he's really not on the field
04:40 It's just not a consistent. Yeah, he's not a consistent catcher of the football and you know
04:46 I'm not here to really throw the whole project on you, but it kind of is your job your receiver
04:51 So do it. Otherwise
04:53 Yeah, you know but catching the ball is something that we just can't massage. We can't get around it
04:59 You got to catch the ball. That's one - how do you catch the ball?
05:03 You can't catch the ball with your body all the time. All right
05:09 And on top of it, you know
05:11 What I need you to do is I just need you to invest in your body a little bit more
05:16 This why you're here. Why were he why you're here and we're having the conversation
05:22 Is because all of the good things about you good body good feet good hands not good hands
05:28 Good a good body good body control very fast and you can take the top off
05:35 But the consistency for what we've been asking you to do blocking being physical without the ball in your hands
05:42 Having polished routes where you do not trust your speed over your technique. That's another big thing for Danny Gray
05:49 He just wants to be fast all the time because that's what he leans on
05:52 we just need to see an uptick on those areas and
05:55 I'm not here to like, you know disparage Danny's career
06:00 But I think we'll see him during rookie mini camp if he's still here
06:04 I mean, this is year three for him and a lot of times it takes three years for a wide receiver to do something
06:09 But this is the time now so that's enough of Danny catch the ball
06:12 Freaking block and then Joanne Jennings real quick from my perspective. I thought I think he is getting better to me
06:19 That's a number three receiver that when pressed into service as a starter
06:23 Steps up and it's another guy that you could argue deserves more targets
06:28 And if you were on another team with a different philosophy in different quarterback, he'd be putting a bigger bigger numbers
06:33 I'm quite pleased with you on not to mention his best
06:36 Attribute which is blocking
06:38 Yeah, I mean the physicality side of the game is just class personified. Honestly, um, Juwan, he's gonna get better
06:45 I see him getting better. Honestly, like
06:47 The blocking though. I feel like this year versus last year
06:52 Is that Juwan got a hell of a lot better at route running his route running put his route running has gotten so much
06:58 More precise. He knows exactly where he needs to be on the field
07:01 And then also, you know for him for him to top it off
07:05 For him to top it off with one of the best games of his career in the Super Bowl
07:09 I mean Juwan Jennings was lights out in the Super Bowl
07:12 At this stage what we need to do is just work on early
07:17 Consistency because of her why if we're gonna rewind back the hands of time
07:21 Juwan, is it necessarily the best practice player?
07:24 I remember those reports throughout the summer and they weren't necessarily
07:27 Consistent for what we need to see out of you what we need to hear out of Juwan during the summer is do you got to?
07:34 Hit the ground running
07:35 Want to be able to put trust in you to be able to get elevated past the third a past the third option on this team
07:41 You are the third receiver, you know
07:43 You never know where your role on this team could really be if you come in
07:48 Dedicated motivated and looking ready to take the next step. Um for where you are
07:53 This is next year
07:56 Juwan is gonna show where your true mentality for the game is gonna be because you're way past
08:02 Being cut you're nowhere
08:04 I mean as a matter of fact we want you right and you got a lot of
08:07 Responsibility on your hands anyway, because if we retained you one that means that he got a new deal
08:12 Right, so I'm looking for Juwan not to fall off
08:17 Right because if we get Juwan back that means he got his money
08:20 He got paid and the last thing I want to do is see Juwan come in here
08:24 Looking like Liberace with new costume jewelry and all of a sudden he can't catch the ball, you know
08:30 You know how these boys look the jury is just so gaudy, you know, there's a way how to wear jewelry great
08:35 But this I wouldn't know I would know either have no taste
08:39 So, you know, that's what we're looking for
08:43 Continued success continued growth and a man don't forget the girl who you came to the dance with don't get brand new if you get
08:49 Paid baby, but you deserve to get paid
08:51 I'm happy. Listen, let's talk about the guy though who we really need to fuck before I mean Brandon are you great job?
08:56 You're doing you I mean he's doing everything right?
08:57 I don't think we need to say much about Brandon right now other than we'll see if you're on this team next year
09:02 But I think we need to talk to Debo
09:04 Debo I mean you came into the season in better shape and your intentions were good and
09:11 Look like you were poised to really turn back the clock, but I
09:15 Don't know. What do you want to say to Debo?
09:18 well
09:20 Tyshawn
09:22 It's been a rough year up and down
09:25 this year, uh
09:28 you said that you had a horrible year and
09:32 that this year that you wanted to see a
09:36 uptick you did that
09:40 Last year you had 56 receptions this year. You had 60 last year. You had
09:45 632 yards receiving this year. You had 892 8 shy of 900
09:51 Last year you were 11.3 game 11 point yard 11.3 yards per reception this year was 14.9
09:59 And last year you only scored once this year you scored seven times
10:02 with
10:05 Nine more first downs that you did last year
10:07 And just over 50% for your success rate
10:11 So
10:15 You did what you were supposed to do your catch percentage?
10:18 Drastically went up less than less than 10% but close to it from 59.6 percent to 67.4 percent
10:26 So
10:29 Why do we feel like?
10:31 This year wasn't an uptick, right?
10:34 Why do we feel like this year wasn't necessarily better than last year? Well, one of the reasons is because
10:40 You missed significant time last year
10:43 Right and because of that significant time you came out with 632 yards and this year
10:51 you only missed I think Diba only missed two games this season if that mm-hmm and
10:56 It amounted for what you probably would have had if you wouldn't have gotten hurt you caught four more balls
11:03 I feel like every every
11:05 Every statistical every statistical of category and D Bo's progression from last year to this year
11:11 You could argue you could argue. He was just more healthy this year than last year
11:15 That's why the numbers are better not necessarily because he was better
11:19 With the timeout last year versus this year. He even had less targets this year. Um
11:25 for me, I think that
11:30 We're at a crossroads with Debo
11:32 on
11:34 If he's gonna be a leader for the team or if he's just gonna be you know a guy that gets paid
11:40 This is a really big year for Debo fiscally he's due to make twenty eight point three million dollars this year
11:47 that's
11:49 gigantic money and
11:51 I don't know. I'm not here to say that he deserves or he doesn't deserve his money
11:55 I've already made my opinion on it, which doesn't matter but
12:00 But what I see
12:02 You being in shape is a direct reflection to your health in my opinion you staying healthy
12:10 I also feel like you being in shape really doesn't need to be a conversation anymore
12:16 Whether you are you aren't it kind of needs to be an afterthought and the fact that it isn't is a problem
12:22 your physicality without the ball is
12:27 Also something that I would like to see and I feel like the fans would like to see better
12:31 I feel feel as though that if Debo is getting the ball
12:36 That's kind of when he turns on that's when it's lights camera action, right?
12:40 But we can't we can't depend on Debo for crack toss to block
12:45 We can't depend on Debo for a wide zone to block
12:49 We really can't depend on Debo to run routes hard when he's not getting the ball
12:54 And it shows up in elements where when it is time for him to get the ball
12:59 Now it's become maybe a hit and miss a hit or miss situation now
13:04 Well, we have to ask ourselves is Debo gonna get the ball. Is he gonna catch the ball, right?
13:08 Is he gonna run the route hard enough to get there?
13:11 And those are things that you just can't have on the table when you're about to get paid that much money
13:17 And you're supposed to be a leader you lead our team out every week. It's you you're the one up front every week
13:24 right, um and yeah and
13:26 for that I
13:29 Just don't think we're getting our money's worth
13:32 We're in the deal. You know I'm saying we're in the deal with you man, and I feel like we're getting a short end of the stick
13:40 because
13:41 When it's time for you to show up we got to get the ball in your hands outside of that
13:46 You're absent when so many different ways and then
13:50 When it comes time to the human side of it where it's time to get you to talk or at least get you to be
13:56 accountable or just show
13:58 Just give us process on where you stand with certain things
14:02 It's contentious at best. You know what I mean?
14:05 Um, so we're just kind of looking for an evolution process from you like it's time new year new you
