00:00 Her family was putting her out into the street.
00:03 [SCREAMING]
00:04 And the neighbor saw her running free
00:06 and called animal control.
00:07 And she was set to be euthanized.
00:09 [CRYING]
00:11 I'm Krista Keogh, and this is Stella's story for GeoBeats.
00:16 She was picked up in the streets in Atlanta, Georgia
00:20 and brought to a shelter called Lifeline Project.
00:23 [SCREAMING]
00:27 And she came into my life because I had a dream one night
00:31 that I was running on the beach with my sister and her dog.
00:34 And I looked down to see a gray and white dog.
00:37 The next day, I went to our local rescue's Instagram page.
00:41 They're called Fly With Me Animal Rescue.
00:43 Oh my god.
00:44 And they work with folks at Lifeline Project
00:47 to bring dogs up to Canada to find their forever home.
00:51 And sure enough, there was a photo
00:53 of a dog who looked just like the dog in my dream.
00:56 When I first met Stella, I knelt down in front of her,
00:59 and she put her head into my arms.
01:02 And I said to the volunteer, is it OK
01:04 that I'm holding her like this?
01:05 And she said, yes, she's yours.
01:09 When she came home to be with me in Halifax, Nova Scotia,
01:12 she was relieved and I think also very tired.
01:15 She was underweight and had been used for breeding.
01:19 So I expect that's why she was simply
01:21 discarded after she had been done breeding.
01:23 To get her right.
01:26 I was trying to set up some structure for her
01:28 so that she would feel safe.
01:30 Do you like your new bed?
01:33 I had kept her and my other dog Apollo
01:35 separate for a few weeks.
01:36 And then when they did finally come together,
01:38 they really did like to play and like to sit together.
01:41 Apollo really dopes on her.
01:46 He kisses her all the time.
01:47 And after a lot of training and courses
01:53 and learning how to manage her reactivity,
01:56 it really did help us bond.
01:59 Say bye.
02:01 She was so inquisitive and watching me all the time
02:05 and always wanting to be by my side
02:07 and just wanted to be included in every single thing
02:09 I was doing.
02:10 And so it made me feel like it was
02:13 as if she was experiencing these things for the first time.
02:16 Si.
02:17 Salud, chica.
02:19 When we would go outside, she was very alert.
02:22 And if she was left inside of a fenced-in area
02:24 to sniff around, she would pace in circles.
02:27 So it made me feel like that was a space
02:30 she wasn't comfortable in and really didn't know
02:32 what to do with herself and was very well
02:35 attuned to being on the alert and being outside,
02:39 almost like a guard dog.
02:40 Hey, Stella.
02:43 One evening, I was sitting and looking at Stella
02:45 and wondering, what am I going to do?
02:47 Honestly, I felt like maybe I had taken on too much.
02:50 What is it?
02:52 And I thought about the back story from the time
02:54 that she was in her former family home, to the streets,
02:57 to the shelter, on a bus, all the way to me.
03:00 She's very tired.
03:02 And I thought, if she can overcome that,
03:04 then I can certainly make some changes in my life
03:07 to accommodate her and give her the things that she needs.
03:10 Yay, good girl.
03:12 I try to be as involved and as engaging as I can.
03:15 But she will still play for a few minutes
03:18 and then immediately stop and then walk away and go
03:20 do something on her own.
03:21 You're the cutest, Stella.
03:23 Yes.
03:24 I think maybe she gets sometimes overwhelmed with the activity
03:28 and not really sure what to do with herself.
03:32 But this Christmas was probably the best,
03:35 because she played a lot with her toys.
03:38 And she learned a lot from Apollo
03:41 what to do in situations that she isn't sure of.
03:43 She is perfect.
03:45 She definitely loves to cuddle.
03:46 She's so soft, and she curls up into a ball.
03:49 And you can just really like nuzzle right into her.
03:52 I'm so proud of her for making it through this life
03:55 and still having so much spirit.
03:58 And I would love to be able to tell her
04:00 that she inspired a book that people can read
04:06 and hopefully learn to have more compassion and understanding
04:11 and love for rescue dogs.
04:13 She likes to see the sunrise in the morning.
04:15 She's my morning girl.
04:16 So when she wakes up, she's like ready to go,
04:19 ready to explore the world, excited for life each day.
