Everywhere & Nowhere: A Sheffield Wednesday Show - A defining decision for Danny?

Everything seemed to be going well on the pitch for Sheffield Wednesday with a few fine wins showing they have the ability to drag themselves away from the relegation zone. However, after admitting that he is interested in signing a player who this week had a court case against him over a domestic assault charge, Danny Rohl has split the fanbase. Chris Holt, Alex Miller and Joe Crann discuss that and look ahead to a derby date with Rotherham United.

00:00 We will now look a little bit more, I won't say forensically because we're not that kind of show,
00:07 but we'll look a little bit more at Saturday's match against Rotherham.
00:11 Listen, they're always, in the absence of, shall we say, the big derby, which doesn't really come around that often,
00:20 games against Rotherham are as close as we get to a proper derby game.
00:26 And they're always absolutely full of incident and action and controversy and all manner of things.
00:35 It is genuinely, I know we kind of, not we, we don't, but the fan, Sheffie Wensley's fan base
00:43 will have a joke about this being Rotherham's cup final and all that kind of thing.
00:50 But in their heart of hearts, they're probably thinking, this is one that they'll always look for this fixture,
00:56 it's one that they'll always be looking forward to, particularly going there to the New York Stadium
01:03 because it's a really nice small ground.
01:07 Wensley will fill that entire end and it makes for an absolutely brilliant atmosphere there.
01:13 Well, Alex, when Florian Camberi scored that goal when we last played them at Rotherham,
01:21 the scenes in the away end certainly didn't look like a team that weren't that bothered about it.
01:26 Yeah, well, I remember, and this is going back a fair bit now,
01:30 not long after I first started covering Wednesday, I was there for a very, very late 2-1 win for Wednesday at Rotherham,
01:40 in which I think Kieran Lee scored a late winner.
01:47 You got a special shirt for that, did I?
01:49 Well, it was a match where I think Rotherham equalised very late on themselves
01:55 and then Wednesday basically went up the other end and scored a winner with Steve Evans waddling down,
02:03 having celebrated at the far end, waddled back to his seat just in time to see Wednesday score.
02:11 I'm pretty sure it was Kieran Lee who made it.
02:13 I think you're right. That was where Millekeller came from, wasn't it?
02:18 There's been a few because I think there was a League Cup game.
02:22 It was David Bates' only game for Sheffield Wednesday.
02:26 Oh, yeah?
02:27 And Wednesday scored a bad man.
02:30 I can't remember.
02:31 Oh, yeah, honestly.
02:34 Yeah, on my office debut, he scored a late equaliser on his debut, didn't he?
02:39 Yeah, I think Stephen Fletcher scored a fairly late winner against him in a Friday night match.
02:46 I think it was the second play-off season.
02:52 Wednesday had been on a bit of a bad run at that point and they needed the win to try and keep themselves in the mix.
02:59 For the sake of not being too biased, there was also the game in the relegation season when they scored very late and kind of ruined everything.
03:11 Yeah, I still maintain that my tweet that night just summed up Sheffield Wednesday in what I basically said.
03:22 "Rotherham United have just scored from Sheffield Wednesday's corner."
03:26 Yeah, Izzy Brown will never recover from that in the Sheffield Wednesday fan base.
03:31 And to be honest, he probably shouldn't because in fairness, it was a shambles of a performance all in and it just summed up Sheffield Wednesday at that moment in time.
03:41 And probably not quite far off as now they're kind of managing to put their reputation back into place.
03:50 We've reminisced quite a lot there.
03:53 A couple of weeks ago, I saw a tweet where somebody said you can get men together and they'll just call out footballers' names and it'll last for hours.
04:05 We've just done that with random football matches against Rotherham.
04:09 But yes, having said all of that, it should well be another exciting, dramatic encounter.
04:21 I hope it's not too exciting. I haven't got the nerves for it.
04:25 This season's taken enough out of me as it is.
04:27 Quite like just a 2-0 victory, so I'm not going into the last 10 minutes worrying about what's going to happen.
04:33 It's not going to be that way.
04:36 It won't happen. Absolutely won't happen.
04:38 Alex, you're not with us this weekend. Say you're not with us. You're not with Joe.
04:42 As Joe rightly said, I'm the big boss now and I've got other things to do.
04:47 I feel like I've made a big error here.
04:50 You're not going to be there, but still, as much as anything else, they're going to be really up for it.
04:59 I think part of what Sheffield West fans are all worried about is that while they know it's important, even if they don't admit it,
05:12 I'm not sure they feel that the players realise how big a deal this one is.
05:18 I think that's what sometimes brings in that little bit of jeopardy into it.
05:23 Yeah, Will Volk certainly does.
05:26 Will Volk would find something in any man's boots that he could dig out and say, "I want to get at these."
05:39 Because 145 games ago, this happened.
05:44 Yeah, you're not wrong. I'll be honest, lads, I've got fears over this one a little bit.
05:53 I just think the season that Rotherham have had, this is their…
05:59 Don't say it. It's their Cup final. You can say it.
06:03 I actually wasn't going to say that. But seeing as you put it like that…
06:09 It's the biggest game of their season anyway, isn't it?
06:14 But it feels like their last chance to give their supporters a little day in the sunshine.
06:24 And yeah, it'll be bouncing there. It's a small crowd, obviously, but it makes a bit of noise on the day that Wednesday comes.
06:34 I know that from experience. I'm gutted I'm missing it.
06:37 I missed two more games between now and the end of the season. It's Rotherham and Leeds.
06:40 And I'm absolutely gutted the way that the fixes have fallen.
06:44 That's bad planning on everybody's part.
06:46 Well, I didn't organise my Nan's 90th and I didn't organise a Stag Day.
06:51 Yeah, unfortunately. But yeah, I'll be watching from afar.
06:58 That's it for us this week on Everywhere and Nowhere.
07:02 We'll be back next week to reflect on Saturday's match against Rotherham.
07:07 And again, look ahead to what is another huge, huge match at Hillsborough when Leeds come to town.
07:13 In fact, there's a match in between that. I've just realised as well.
07:16 There's a midweek match against Plymouth.
07:23 I'm just going to keep this little piece of paper that I've got right beside me here, just so that I can remember for the future.
07:29 So yeah, a few big games coming up.
07:32 We'll be back to reflect and look forward to them on next week's show.
07:36 Join us again. Thanks, Joe. And thanks, Alex. We'll see you next week.
