00:00 It's an image that could have quelled rumours, but it has only added to them.
00:04 This photograph of Kate, Princess of Wales, surrounded by her three children,
00:08 was published to commemorate Mother's Day in the UK.
00:11 It's the first official photograph of the princess since her abdominal surgery January 6th.
00:16 Credited as taken by her husband, the heir to the throne, Prince William,
00:20 the picture was released after weeks of rumours online
00:24 over the princess's whereabouts and her health.
00:26 But following its initial publication, several major news agencies, including Reuters,
00:31 AFP and AP, issued what's called a "kill order", or instructions to pull the image.
00:36 Discrepancies had been found, namely around Princess Charlotte's cuff
00:40 and her mother's clothes.
00:42 These areas of the image seem to have been photoshopped or altered,
00:46 as the child's left hand does not align correctly.
00:49 News agencies regularly check the veracity of images,
00:53 amidst concerns over doctoring and fake AI photographs.
00:57 The princess issued a mea culpa on social media.
01:00 Like many amateur photographers, I do occasionally experiment with editing.
01:05 I wanted to express my apologies for any confusion
01:08 the family photograph we shared yesterday caused.
01:11 I hope everyone celebrating had a very happy Mother's Day.
01:15 With the princess absent from royal duties until at least Easter,
01:18 Kensington Palace has refrained from providing details over her health,
01:22 citing a right to privacy.
01:24 But it has confirmed she's doing well.
01:26 Meanwhile, the palace has also had to juggle the absence of King Charles,
01:30 who's not been able to carry out public duties due to a cancer diagnosis.
