00:10 Fantastic episode here for you today.
00:16 Kendrick Bourne on a variety of topics for almost 30 minutes.
00:20 If you're listening, I'm just gonna tell you made a great choice.
00:22 We're gonna get to him in a second though, because as happy and
00:25 optimistic as you'll hear Kendrick about next season and his recovery,
00:29 is he gonna be at minicamp in June?
00:32 And the Patriots and his free agency and everything that went on.
00:35 I know a lot of you listening to this are not as optimistic about the New England
00:38 Patriots have treated free agency largely, as Mike Shearer already last put it,
00:42 a way to run it back with a core from a 4-13 team.
00:46 I don't think that's an entirely fair way to characterize what the Patriots have
00:50 done, but if you were hung up on Calvin Ridley,
00:53 who signed with the Titans for four years, 92 million, 50 million of which
00:58 was guaranteed, I absolutely get it.
01:00 I asked for mailbag questions this morning and yesterday.
01:04 I'd say 90% of them were just venting about the state of the Patriots,
01:08 totally fair.
01:09 I wanna make clear, I wanted the Patriots to sign Calvin Ridley.
01:13 I thought it was good business.
01:14 They at that price tag, which let's be clear,
01:17 23 million puts him per year in the top 10, all receivers.
01:22 Total value, top 10 for all receivers, guarantees puts him in the top 10.
01:26 So he's being paid like a receiver, he is not the marketable change.
01:29 But if the Patriots wanted him, they could not have merely matched that
01:33 contract based on everyone's favorite topic around free agency, income tax, okay?
01:38 As well as cost of living.
01:39 Now, that would mean going to 25 million a year.
01:43 Let's just say roughly, generally.
01:46 If you're comfortable with paying $25 million per year for Calvin Ridley and
01:49 going upwards of 50, maybe more million in guarantees as Mike Shearer was last
01:53 episode, great, that's where it ends, this stinks.
01:57 I'm not gonna argue with you, okay?
01:59 It's totally fair to feel that way, given the history of the Patriots,
02:02 their needs, etc.
02:02 I understand why they didn't make that offer, okay?
02:07 And I outlined a lot of this in the last episode.
02:09 Again, it's in the first, I think, 15, 20 minutes, which you already.
02:13 If you wanna listen to the reasons why you would be hesitant for that,
02:15 I would just go back there.
02:16 We're not gonna spend too much time here.
02:18 What I will say though, that is new, is this.
02:21 The Patriots cannot whatsoever unequivocally stand pat with this
02:26 receiving core, because just as they did with DeAndre Hopkins eight months ago,
02:31 when the Titans also outbid the red borderline number one receiver,
02:35 they have one of the worst receiving cores in the league.
02:37 And yes, they can add to this in the draft, where famously, everyone,
02:40 whenever you tweet about the draft, we'll remind you, there's no guarantees.
02:43 Yes, folks, that's the draft.
02:45 But even though Hollywood Brown, even though Tyler Boyd,
02:50 even Odell Beckham Jr. is not Calvin Ridley, Calvin Ridley also,
02:54 not Mike Evans or Michael Pittman or T.H. Higgins, are actual number one receivers.
02:57 They will improve, one of them could, the current receiving core,
03:02 which you cannot win in the modern NFL with.
03:05 That being said, and the Patriots need to add infrangercy in the draft,
03:09 that is my full take, full stop, period, end of story.
03:11 I think everyone needs to take a deep breath and
03:14 reset expectations will be for next season.
03:17 Because frankly, I just assumed we were all on the same page,
03:21 that this Patriots team coming up in 2024 is only gonna win about six,
03:26 maybe seven games, and probably less.
03:29 We'll see what the Vegas over under is set at, which nailed the Patriots last year,
03:32 by the way, at about six and a half, and they came in at four.
03:35 Disaster of a season, some bad luck, sure, but as the folks say, Vegas knows.
03:41 So what I'm saying here is, the goal is not to win immediately and
03:46 as much as possible in 2024.
03:48 This is a long term vision, which is what rebuilds are about.
03:52 Rebuilding is a long term plan, two, three, four years down the road.
03:58 If you have a great rebuild, it'll be like the Lions, who did this in three years,
04:01 made the NFC Championship game, okay?
04:03 They were smartly not all in, and I get they have a ton of cap space.
04:06 I get they have a lot of draft capital.
04:08 But the Patriots also retained a lot of their young core players,
04:11 which Elliott Wolfe told you he would do.
04:13 So again, this is not to dismiss your frustration.
04:17 I feel a little bit annoyed that they've not done any kind of big splash, and
04:20 it's been very quiet.
04:21 But all of the deals they've done make business sense in terms of value,
04:25 in terms of positionally.
04:26 Now they should add a receiver or left tackle here in for agency.
04:30 Again, go sign Tyler Boyd, go get Marquise Hollywood Brown.
04:35 Even if it's not ideal, that ship has sailed and that ship was Calvin Ridley.
04:38 You still need to add.
04:40 I expect that they will.
04:41 Hopefully it's one of those names or someone of the same caliber.
04:45 We will see.
04:46 In the meantime, that's my unofficial answer to all the questions, by the way.
04:50 Sorry, we'll get to more of them next week.
04:52 Kendrick Bourne is coming up.
04:54 And on the back end, a new guest, Jordan Voss, our third fan guest,
04:59 where you get a five, seven, sometimes eight minute segment of your own
05:03 in this podcast if you A, ask a mailbag question, and B,
05:06 show proof of donation to Boston Children's Hospital.
05:09 It can be as little as $1.
05:10 You heard me say a million times, every single dollar counts.
05:13 So if you want to be on this show, reply to my mimic tweets with a question
05:18 and a screenshot of your donation to Boston Children's,
05:21 or email me with the same information, your question, and then proof of receipt.
05:26 Now I might open this up to some other charities
05:30 because we've got a couple people backlogged,
05:32 but we might run out of them in a couple of weeks
05:34 for things to slow down.
05:35 That's fine.
05:35 All money going to charity is good money.
05:38 But for now, we have Kendrick Bourne.
05:40 We have Jordan Voss.
05:41 I would just say, everyone, it's going to be a long road and a long rebuild.
05:47 Might be underwhelming, totally fine.
05:48 But I promise you, you will feel better at the end of this conversation
05:51 with Kendrick Bourne, which, heads up, his audio cuts a little bit in and out,
05:56 never for a long period of time.
05:58 That's annoying to me.
05:59 It's a pet peeve.
05:59 But just, again, through it, the rest of free agency, in this interview,
06:03 Kendrick was great.
06:04 And we're not going to wait any more.
06:06 Here he comes.
06:06 All right, one of the people's favorite patriots
06:08 on the podcast for the first time, Kendrick Bourne making his Pats
06:11 Interference debut.
06:13 He's back in his native Portland.
06:14 He's got a fresh three-year contract to stay in New England.
06:17 He told everyone that he wanted to stay, and he did.
06:19 But Kendrick, I want to start in the obvious place
06:21 here because you are not alone in Portland.
06:23 You're working out at Nike headquarters, Bailey Zappi,
06:25 Taekwon Thornton, Pop Douglas.
06:27 There's a video that you posted that made me wonder,
06:30 what are you feeding Taekwon that he could stay in Portland
06:34 and have a career as a bouncer?
06:35 The man looks massive.
06:38 He's just eating, man, eating, lifting weights.
06:42 He's trying to get to, like, 200 pounds, just build his durability,
06:48 something we've been working on.
06:49 He signed with the same agency as me.
06:53 And so it's been dope to just get closer with him,
06:58 just give him advice on how to have longevity in certain things
07:03 as a leader, trying to be a leader, a better leader for young guys,
07:06 and just being a leader for my team, you know what I mean?
07:08 Being an example.
07:10 And also being a vocal leader, working on being more vocal,
07:13 and just telling him those little things, you know, that'll be good for him.
07:16 So he's been lifting, man.
07:17 He was lifting before he actually got here.
07:20 And so he came in looking really big, and I was just proud of him.
07:22 I'm like, bro, this tells me that you're locked in, bro,
07:25 and you want something out of this year.
07:27 So just proud of that guy and the progress he's made so far.
07:30 So we've just been working, and I just got to keep it going.
07:34 Yeah, I like it.
07:34 All right, we got a lot to get to, setting aside Taekwon's weight gain,
07:37 which, look, good for him.
07:38 I think everyone sees the talent.
07:40 You want to see it flourish.
07:41 And you're a guy who understood what it took to thrive in the NFL a little bit
07:45 later in your career.
07:45 So that sounds like a good situation for him to be in.
07:48 But you are staying in New England because you agreed, last Sunday,
07:51 three years, $19.5 million contract.
07:54 Take us through what you were thinking earlier that day about whether a deal
07:58 would get done or not when you got the call that it was done,
08:02 and then what you do next.
08:03 So me and Henry, obviously my agent, he just
08:09 keep me up to date about what's going on and where the numbers are at,
08:13 what we're looking for, what makes sense.
08:16 And so kind of just in the unknowing, in a sense, but at the same time,
08:22 just kind of in the loop.
08:23 So not really stressing, knowing what I'm worth,
08:27 but also knowing that that's somewhere I wanted to be.
08:30 So if that's what the Patriots felt was worth what I was worth,
08:36 then I was OK with that.
08:37 Just negotiating.
08:38 And so I was really in the unknown, not really calling and stressing,
08:41 Henry, what is going on?
08:43 I'm just being calm and just going through my normal day.
08:46 And then later on that day when he called me and gave me the final numbers
08:50 that they kind of agreed on and Henry thought was fair on our side
08:54 and their side, he ran it down to me.
08:57 And I was just like, nah, I like the deal.
08:59 I'm not really chasing a billion dollars.
09:00 I'm really chasing the legacy.
09:03 And I've been watching Dynasty lately and just love the story
09:06 the Patriots have, obviously, and want to build something like that,
09:09 be a part of something like that.
09:10 So when he told me the numbers and we agreed,
09:15 it was definitely heartwarming, man.
09:17 And it's just time now.
09:19 The path is set, and it's time to get to work.
09:21 So it's funny you mentioned the Dynasty, because I talked about that
09:24 with Dev last week.
09:26 And you think it's for the former players, right?
09:28 Like they lived it.
09:29 They were in it.
09:30 But I never thought of it as this indirect recruiting pitch.
09:33 Like, stay here.
09:34 Watch the doc in the meantime while negotiations are going on.
09:37 It seems like it had an imprint on you.
09:38 What do you think of it so far?
09:40 It does, bro.
09:41 It's just impressive.
09:42 It gives you the insights.
09:43 You know, it's just-- it goes deeper.
09:45 There's a lot that goes on within the organization.
09:47 I feel like they've given an insight of what people haven't really seen
09:53 or known.
09:53 It's kind of a deeper insight.
09:54 You know, we all know how Bill is of being secretive and not
09:58 wanting people to be let in.
10:00 And I think it was good for what's about to happen.
10:03 I think it's going to be more open with Gerard, you know.
10:06 And I'm excited.
10:07 And it's just crazy timing for me to be on Bill's last team
10:12 and now to be coming back and to just be a part of the new culture,
10:17 whatever may happen.
10:18 We don't know.
10:18 I don't know.
10:19 No one knows.
10:19 We have to see, obviously.
10:21 But it's exciting to be a part.
10:23 And that was one of the biggest triggers for me to come back
10:28 was because I believe that it's going to be very fruitful being
10:32 a patriot in this new era.
10:34 So love Bill to death, as we all know.
10:36 I definitely do.
10:37 But it was time, man.
10:39 And I want to be a part of Gerard's legacy
10:42 and to see what's to flourish.
10:45 All right, we're going to get to a lot of that,
10:47 because you are open from the get-go.
10:49 If we were co-hosts right now, you would
10:50 think we were teammates for a year, because you're
10:51 setting me up left and right.
10:52 But I got to ask you the questions about your ACL,
10:55 because before you can contribute to whatever
10:57 that culture is going to be, before you have your eyes set
10:59 on more championships or whatever,
11:01 you have to get on the field.
11:02 And I've been reporting--
11:03 Yes.
11:03 --talking to people close to you,
11:05 that you're ahead of schedule.
11:06 This is all very good news.
11:07 What do the next couple of months look like for you?
11:10 Because you'll have mini camp in June.
11:12 What are your next checkpoints?
11:13 Like, when are you running?
11:14 When do you expect to be 100%?
11:16 What are you looking at?
11:17 That's a good question.
11:18 So this month, next month, I'll be running.
11:21 So right now, I'm just building up strength,
11:23 building my quads back up, building
11:25 the muscles around my knee, glutes, to all help my knee,
11:29 you know, just get the stress off.
11:32 Thank God it wasn't a contact injury--
11:34 I mean, non-contact injury.
11:35 So it wasn't my running mechanics, which
11:37 is a blessing.
11:38 It was contact.
11:39 So it wasn't nothing I was doing wrong mechanically.
11:42 So those steps that I'm taking are good.
11:44 Everything is kind of back to normal, in a sense.
11:47 It's just relearning how to break down.
11:49 So my biggest thing is I can run right now.
11:53 I can run full speed.
11:53 I can jump.
11:54 It's just the landing, it's the stopping that I'm really
11:57 focusing on right now.
11:59 So this first four months was really good for me.
12:01 I really attacked it head on with my guy Alex
12:04 from Dr. Andrews.
12:06 He came out here from Florida, and he's been helping me.
12:09 And so this first four months, I really
12:11 attacked, and I can tell that I am ahead of schedule.
12:14 Like, I would honestly say, I thought,
12:16 was it like if it sucked, but it's been very positive.
12:20 And so my plan is to be ready, just to be rehabbing
12:24 all through mini camp.
12:27 You know, the Patriots are going to have me on a routine,
12:29 and I trust their process.
12:31 I trust what they're going to do.
12:32 So this first four months was all up to me
12:35 and how I attacked rehab.
12:36 And then going to a team, being around the guys
12:39 is going to help me so much for competing,
12:42 just getting motivated, being around the energy.
12:45 I feel like it's going to take me to pass
12:47 that next step of recovery.
12:50 So mini camp, I probably won't be a part of mini camp.
12:52 OTAs, I probably would not be a part of.
12:54 I'll be on the side doing my own thing.
12:57 Mini camp, I'm saying mini camp.
12:58 OTAs, I won't be.
12:59 But mini camp, I'll be primed and pretty much ready.
13:02 And then real camp, I'll be ready to go.
13:05 So Dr. gave me the full go, which is exciting.
13:08 So that is the plan, and I'm looking to be out there.
13:11 So I'm really excited, man.
13:14 I'm trying to get comeback player of the year, baby.
13:16 Comeback player of the year, I love it.
13:18 So just to be clear, mini camp and junior,
13:21 aiming to run and be a full participant,
13:23 I know the team's going to have some sort of say,
13:25 and training camp is the bigger deal.
13:26 But that's your goal right now?
13:28 Exactly.
13:28 So I was-- yeah, I was sorry to confuse you guys.
13:30 OTAs, I will not be really out there, obviously.
13:34 But then mini camp, I'm priming.
13:35 That's when I should be most primed up, getting ready,
13:38 kind of re-changing the oil, getting it going.
13:41 And then training camp, I should be full go.
13:44 So I'm excited for that.
13:46 All right, we're being real for a second.
13:47 You missing OTAs, it's not that bad, right?
13:52 Oh, no.
13:52 Yeah, not that bad.
13:54 And so that's a good point.
13:56 So getting close with Alex, trying to get the playbook,
13:59 knowing what I'm doing, kind of being around.
14:02 I'm not going to not be present.
14:04 I want to be there because it's a new offense,
14:06 our fourth new offense in four years for me.
14:09 So it's kind of crazy, but just attacking head on,
14:12 it's a challenge.
14:13 And just staying close to the coaches, the players,
14:17 and knowing my role once I'm able to get back out there
14:20 so I'm not behind or anything like that.
14:22 So more mental thing for me right now.
14:25 And then when I'm ready to go, putting it all together.
14:28 So yeah, not too bad.
14:29 Yeah, mental reps is what I was getting at.
14:30 It's not so bad.
14:31 You guys want to run and work out and go nuts in April and May?
14:34 Like, yeah, that's cool by me.
14:35 I got to stay here, doctor's orders.
14:38 Exactly.
14:39 So when we talked to your new offensive coordinator,
14:41 Alex Van Pelt, a couple of months ago--
14:44 maybe it was last month--
14:45 he said, it'll be mostly the Browns offense,
14:48 but I need to wait and see what offensive linemen I have,
14:50 what receivers I have, to kind of build the rest of it out.
14:53 And I'm curious what you think the offseason has
14:55 been like so far.
14:56 Because most of the moves have just
14:58 been to retain guys like Mike on Wenu, you're back,
15:01 Hunter Henry's back, on defense Kyle Duggar, Josh Huche.
15:05 DP gets cut, team misses out on Calvin Ridley.
15:08 What do you make of the roster that will obviously
15:10 set up the offense in whatever the season's going to be at?
15:13 I think we have the pieces.
15:16 I feel like we've had the pieces for the last four years.
15:18 And I think Alex is going to put it together a way
15:22 obviously nobody has.
15:25 So I'm excited to see how he operates.
15:28 I love Cleveland's offense.
15:29 I loved how they did things.
15:32 Elijah Mitchell-- not Eli-- what's his name?
15:34 The receiver--
15:35 Moore, Elijah Moore.
15:36 Elijah Moore, OK, Mitchell.
15:37 Yeah, so he kind of went for the Jets over there
15:40 and kind of had a better role.
15:43 Alex knew how to use them, unlike the Jets did.
15:45 Not to make it about him, but that shows me that Alex
15:49 knows how to use strengths.
15:50 He knows how to use traits that we carry as players.
15:53 So I like what he's saying.
15:55 He has to wait to evaluate.
15:56 He's not just going in there saying,
15:58 I'm going to put Bourne here and Tycone here.
16:01 He knows.
16:01 He has to see.
16:02 He has to evaluate.
16:03 He has to see us in person, see how we run,
16:06 see what we're good at, the skill sets.
16:09 Pop has a special skill set that I
16:11 feel like he's going to show the world more
16:14 than we saw last year.
16:15 So just those different tools that he'll put together
16:19 for us to be a good offense.
16:21 And obviously, the draft and stuff is different, too.
16:23 So it all has to come together.
16:25 And I like how he answered that question,
16:26 because he doesn't know until we all can come together.
16:29 So that's a pretty good answer.
16:31 And it sounds like a logical answer.
16:35 Logical.
16:36 It's good.
16:36 Sometimes we haven't had a whole lot of logical
16:38 the last couple of years while doing a KPS offense, which
16:41 I will say-- and you can stay silent.
16:43 Have you talked with ABP, though?
16:45 Have you talked with Alex?
16:46 So I met him.
16:47 So when I came out there recently,
16:48 I ran into him in the hotel.
16:51 So I stayed at the Renaissance.
16:53 And I ran into him, TC, and I think it was the O-line coach.
16:59 One of them.
16:59 I didn't know who the O-line coach was.
17:01 Scott, yeah.
17:02 So I ran into all of them.
17:04 Scott Peters is not like your accountant.
17:06 This dude played offensive line.
17:07 He has his own gym.
17:09 Massive dude.
17:10 He was massive.
17:11 I shook his hand.
17:12 I was like, yo, yo, who are you?
17:14 But it was cool.
17:15 So yeah, I met him all.
17:16 Ran into him.
17:17 It was kind of God-ordained, man, how I ran into him.
17:21 And I was just excited to see him.
17:22 And just chopped it up with him, introduced myself.
17:25 And that was my first time meeting him.
17:26 And then when I went in the next day, I went to his office,
17:30 chopped it up with him.
17:31 And he just was excited, too.
17:32 All the guys were excited.
17:34 Just bringing my energy in there, man.
17:35 They could feel my energy, as a lot of people do,
17:37 which is a blessing and a trait I carry.
17:40 And so it was dope to get-- to break the ice early
17:43 before just coming out there.
17:45 And so kind of get-- so now I'm trying to--
17:47 I'm going to connect with him again,
17:48 now that I'm on the team officially.
17:50 So I'm excited.
17:52 It's a new era, not just for the Patriots,
17:54 but for the Pats Interference Podcast, brought to you now

18:51 Again, that's prizepix.com/clns and use code CLNS
18:56 for a first deposit match up to $100.
18:59 PrizePix-- pick more, pick less.
19:01 It's that easy.
19:02 All right, so talent, obviously, is the number one driver
19:08 of winning in the NFL, right?
19:09 But other things contribute.
19:10 You talk about player usage on the coaching side,
19:13 energy in the locker room, leadership, work ethic,
19:15 all those different things.
19:17 We don't know what the talent level is going to be like,
19:18 because we're still in free agency.
19:20 The draft is yet to come.
19:21 Front office might even make a couple of trades.
19:23 Setting that aside, though, what do
19:25 you think the 2024 Patriots need to learn
19:28 and take from last year to fix that
19:31 will help you maximize whatever that talent is next season?
19:36 I think-- I like when you brought up OTAs.
19:38 I think OTAs is going to be important for us.
19:42 And we got a new coach, so I think
19:44 we're starting earlier, right?
19:46 Yes.
19:47 So yeah, so those little things, people being present,
19:50 us building that camaraderie off the field.
19:52 So you talk about Taekwon and Pop, Zappi being here.
19:55 I love that those guys came out here.
19:57 That's just a little piece of our puzzle,
19:59 but we're getting closer.
20:01 I think us just hanging out, man,
20:03 and being brothers off the field.
20:06 The cliche answer is really that having handshakes,
20:10 all these things that are going to make us play for each other.
20:13 Because talent can only go so far.
20:15 It is a talent league, but if you
20:17 got people that are closer to each other that
20:19 will play for each other and play with a purpose,
20:23 I think that's what we need.
20:24 I think that's what we were missing last year.
20:25 There's more guys just coming out there for themselves.
20:28 And I think it's going to be a different organization.
20:31 And so Mayo, he has that younger attitude
20:35 and that friendship kind of attitude to him.
20:39 So just being close as brothers, hanging out and doing
20:42 those little things that some teams might not do, that'll
20:45 make the difference in a few of these games.
20:48 Right.
20:49 Now, one of the guys who's not going
20:50 to be with you building those bonds, because he just
20:52 got traded, was Mack.
20:53 And I would be remiss if I didn't ask you what
20:56 you thought when it happened.
20:57 Did you know it was going to happen?
20:59 And have you spoken with him recently
21:00 sometime around the trade?
21:02 Yeah, so I definitely didn't know it was going to happen.
21:05 But there's truth in every rumor they say.
21:06 So it was just how it was going.
21:09 And I'm happy for him that he's going
21:12 to get a fresh start, which is awesome for him.
21:15 And that being back home, it might
21:16 be a good environment for him, someplace he's familiar with.
21:20 And so it was funny, because on the same day,
21:23 our transactions happened.
21:25 And I texted him.
21:26 I was like, bro, I'm going to miss you, bro.
21:28 I love you, bro, and hope you do well.
21:29 And he just was like, thank you, bro.
21:32 And he was just happy to be home.
21:33 And then he texted me a few hours later
21:36 and was just congratulating me.
21:38 And we're really close.
21:40 And I'm going to miss him for sure.
21:42 But everything happens for a reason.
21:44 So I think the Patriots did well by him,
21:47 with letting him go back home.
21:49 I don't know if they talked about that or anything,
21:52 but that was cool for him to go back to his hometown,
21:54 maybe around his family.
21:56 After all he's been through, that'll probably help him.
21:59 And you never know.
22:00 Injuries happen all the time.
22:01 He could be the next man up, and everything can change.
22:04 So just understand his ear and tell him things like that.
22:07 Don't ever doubt it, bro.
22:09 It's for a reason.
22:10 And everything you've been through is for a reason.
22:13 If you take it with the right perspective,
22:16 it can change around.
22:17 So I think he's going to do well.
22:19 All right.
22:20 His successor, the next guy, looks like, as far as we know,
22:23 going to be a rookie.
22:24 You don't have the third pick for no reason, right?
22:26 Season was bad last year.
22:27 They just traded their starting quarterback,
22:29 looking at a rookie.
22:30 Or maybe Jacoby Brissett.
22:31 What do you make of catching passes, perhaps,
22:33 from a guy who could go top three in the draft?
22:35 Or is someone who--
22:37 everyone I've talked to says the same things about Jacoby.
22:39 They're like, I love him.
22:40 He works incredibly hard.
22:41 He's good in the locker room.
22:42 Like, it's almost boring.
22:43 These are good things.
22:44 You want to hear about a teammate.
22:45 What do you make about catching passes from him and/or a rookie?
22:49 So I'm just excited.
22:50 And also, I don't want people to forget about Zappi.
22:53 Zappi is a special guy to me.
22:55 You know what I mean?
22:56 I believe in him.
22:57 I think he's a sleeper that people are really looking over.
23:01 But I'm excited.
23:03 I'm really with wherever the team wants to do.
23:08 And whoever comes in and Brissett,
23:11 I'm going to get close to him.
23:12 I want to get his number, talk to him,
23:14 vibe, be a good teammate to all my teammates.
23:16 And whoever we pick, if that's going to be the leader,
23:20 then just having his back.
23:21 You know what I mean?
23:22 Getting close with him, too, and treating everybody equally,
23:25 man, it's awesome that we have this opportunity
23:28 as an organization.
23:31 It could be make or break.
23:33 So hopefully, we get the right guy with the tangibles.
23:37 And it's just an exciting time.
23:40 Everybody loves the draft, even the players.
23:41 We want to see--
23:43 have y'all seen?
23:43 I got a YouTube video where we watch the draft
23:46 at Mac's house.
23:47 But hopefully, I might do something else like that
23:49 and just get the guys together.
23:51 Because we care.
23:52 We want the organization to pick the right guy.
23:55 The players care.
23:56 And I know they know that.
23:57 So I believe in Elliott and Gerard.
24:00 I believe they know what they're doing.
24:04 I love what Elliott's done so far.
24:05 And he's going to do well in the draft, too.
24:07 All right, let's talk about Elliott.
24:09 We don't know him particularly well.
24:11 I will, spoiler alert, have a story on his full background
24:14 where he's come up, the way he thinks,
24:16 everything coming out next month.
24:17 Until then, what can you tell us about the new de facto GM?
24:21 He's awesome.
24:22 So I had a conversation with him a couple of times
24:24 before negotiating.
24:26 Just hanging out as friends, really, more than anything.
24:30 And he's someone that I'd never--
24:33 when he wasn't the GM yet, I would always see him in office.
24:36 And I didn't know who he was.
24:37 I'm like, bro, who is this guy?
24:38 And he was always walking around with his head held high,
24:41 though, in New England in the building.
24:43 And I look at people's demeanor.
24:45 I look how they walk, how they talk, how confident they are.
24:47 Just everyone.
24:48 And he was somebody that was just--
24:50 I could tell he carried weight around the building.
24:52 He had a say-so.
24:54 I didn't know exactly in what.
24:56 But every day, I was just like, I'm
24:57 about to start talking to this guy.
24:58 I'm about to start saying what's up to him.
25:00 And eventually, every day, last year, I would just always
25:04 walk by him and be like, what's up?
25:05 And I had to figure out his name and stuff.
25:07 And then I learned who he was.
25:09 Yeah, and then our relationship just
25:11 started to grow at that point.
25:13 And it just came full circle, how he became one of the leaders.
25:16 And we had a good relationship.
25:18 So anybody out there, any player, any young player,
25:21 if you see somebody in a building that may be important,
25:24 say hi to him.
25:26 Get to know him.
25:27 Build a relationship.
25:28 Because now, Elliot, he believes in me.
25:30 And it's awesome for me and him, because now negotiating
25:33 is easier, because we're open.
25:35 I'm not holding grudges or anything.
25:37 There's no ice there.
25:39 The ice is broken, because I introduced myself to him way
25:42 before negotiations happened.
25:43 And it turned out well.
25:45 So he's a good guy.
25:46 But I think it went further for me because the relationship.
25:49 And I'm just blessed to say that.
25:51 And so that would be my advice to anyone.
25:53 But me and Elliot, man, his mindset is awesome.
25:57 The way he's going to go about things is awesome.
25:59 The opportunities he's giving the players
26:01 is awesome in how he thinks.
26:03 So just getting to know him more now,
26:05 now that we negotiated and even talked more than we ever have,
26:09 I feel like I know him more.
26:10 So I'm excited to even help.
26:11 I'm trying to be GM assistant, bro.
26:14 Whoever y'all want me to go try to recruit me.
26:17 I like it.
26:17 The lesson here, for the kids listening,
26:19 is butter up your boss so when you need to ask for a raise,
26:22 you can get it.
26:23 That's a long con by you.
26:24 Exactly.
26:25 Exactly.
26:27 You mentioned his mindset, though.
26:28 That's interesting.
26:29 What do you know about what his plan is for this team
26:32 and how he's going to build?
26:33 Like, he's told the media, but I'd
26:34 imagine his conversations with players are a bit different.
26:36 Yeah, so he's just treating everybody fairly,
26:39 giving everybody opportunity.
26:41 Bringing guys in, not just because you drop a pass,
26:45 you don't get an opportunity next week.
26:46 I think he's going to help Jarrod understand.
26:49 They have their own meetings, but I
26:51 think they're going to have people get the opportunities
26:54 they deserve.
26:55 Not having to prove it every single day, every single week.
26:58 But going with the-- we are going to struggle.
27:00 Everybody's up and down.
27:02 One week, you might have a great week.
27:03 One week, you might not.
27:04 But I think he's going to believe in us in a different way
27:07 than it has been in the past.
27:09 So I'm excited for that.
27:11 Some young guys struggle with--
27:14 they don't have the same opportunities
27:16 they did last week.
27:17 They start thinking too much.
27:19 Everybody don't have that gritty mindset to where,
27:23 like, just go get it.
27:24 I'm blessed to kind of have it.
27:25 I've been through the ups and downs and been able to--
27:27 Yeah, board blast, I heard.
27:29 Yeah, board blast, baby.
27:31 But some players don't have that.
27:32 I think Ely is going to balance that out.
27:35 You have to earn what you get, but at the same time,
27:38 we believe in you.
27:39 You're on this team for a reason.
27:40 And that's what I think the mindset is going to be.
27:43 The motto is that we always believe in you,
27:46 but you got to earn what you got, what you get.
27:48 And I think it's going to help a lot of our players.
27:52 So I got one more, but I want to stop there real quick
27:55 before we let you go.
27:56 That sounds like Pop Douglas, who you're spending
27:57 a lot of time with there.
27:58 I mean, we all saw him fumble week two.
28:00 He doesn't go back into that game against Miami.
28:02 You guys go to Owen too.
28:03 Maybe his return doesn't change the outcome,
28:05 but as a lesser role in week three against the Jets,
28:07 you win.
28:08 Is that an example of what you're talking about here?
28:10 Bro, that is a great example.
28:12 That is a prime example, because that's just
28:15 the nature of the game.
28:16 It's inevitable.
28:17 I fumbled in the Buffalo game at a crucial time,
28:22 as I remember.
28:23 And I had the ball high and tight,
28:25 tried to do all the technique, and I still fumbled.
28:28 So like you talk about with Pop, it's just inevitable.
28:30 He's trying to be an explosive player like he is, be himself.
28:33 But then when you don't put us back in the game,
28:36 I got back in the game, which was a blessing.
28:40 But that kills the confidence, what you're saying.
28:42 It's a great example.
28:43 And so I think that's going to be the difference.
28:45 It's like, no, bro, you just made a mistake.
28:48 That can happen to anyone.
28:49 And that mindset is just going to help a player take off.
28:52 So Pop still did great, but Pop has a good mindset.
28:56 But if you get a player that might not have such a good
28:58 mindset and a strong mental--
29:04 so it can affect him.
29:05 So I think that's where Elliott--
29:07 when we talked, he kind of made me understand that it's not
29:10 going to be like that.
29:11 It's going to be-- you're going to get another opportunity.
29:13 You can't just do it five times in a row.
29:15 But one time, yeah, learn from your mistakes,
29:19 and we'll still let you be great.
29:22 Yeah, growth mindset.
29:24 A little bit more patient, understanding.
29:25 His phrase-- I don't know if you caught this quote at the combine
29:28 was "less hard-ass type of vibe."
29:30 Did you hear him say that about the change?
29:33 I did.
29:34 That's awesome, though.
29:35 Yeah, yeah.
29:36 He-- I don't think the Patriots thought it was that awesome,
29:39 because we in the media have a tendency to really throw
29:42 everything in your face, and this is something that they
29:44 didn't want their nose rubbed in.
29:45 But he was being honest.
29:46 I could see the smile on your face,
29:48 or you don't mind it at all, because it sounds true.
29:51 Exactly.
29:51 And it's just making it-- don't make it harder than what it is.
29:55 Like, football's hard enough.
29:56 So if you can make players have it a little bit easier--
30:01 not easy, but to where we can work together,
30:04 then I think the success--
30:07 that breeds success.
30:09 All right.
30:09 Here's the last one, because you're turning 29 this summer,
30:12 and it made me think about three summers ago, when you and I meet
30:15 for the first time.
30:16 This is coming out of COVID.
30:17 You had just signed, then, your first three-year deal
30:20 with the Patriots.
30:21 We're at some golf course in Plymouth.
30:23 I'm talking to your brother.
30:24 I'm talking to your agent, some other people
30:25 around this big brother and big sister's event, right?
30:27 And this is how long ago that feels.
30:29 A, of course, we're just talking about vaccines.
30:31 B, Cam Newton was trying to get you into a wine.
30:35 You guys were vibing, building a relationship.
30:37 I think your brother Andrew was already into wine.
30:39 He was sold.
30:40 And you were unmarried.
30:41 You had one fewer kid.
30:43 Things have changed so much for you the last three years.
30:45 So when you think about the end of this contract,
30:48 or even just the next three years,
30:49 what does Kendrick Bourne, going from 29 to 31,
30:52 want most as someone who--
30:54 again, it was so different, I think, knowing you then
30:57 and knowing you now, in terms of your values
30:59 and what matters most to you.
31:01 What do you want out of your next three years in New England?
31:03 That is a great question.
31:04 So obviously, they've helped me grow mentally,
31:07 which you just said.
31:08 I've grown in that first three years,
31:10 like, rapidly and just in my personal life, football player.
31:17 And now I want to be a captain.
31:21 That is my biggest goal this year.
31:22 I want to be a leader.
31:24 Having the young guys out here has
31:26 shown me that I am impactful.
31:28 The energy I carry is very impactful.
31:30 My biggest goal is being a captain,
31:32 being out there front line, you know what I mean,
31:35 and just doing what the team needs.
31:37 I didn't really have that in 2021, what I had in 2020.
31:39 The ups and downs was for me to be my best in 2023.
31:42 So now that I've learned that, and even come off ACL,
31:45 the mental strength that I'm building
31:48 with working on my knee and these different things,
31:52 I believe that I'm going to carry a different weight
31:53 this year.
31:54 And I'm going to be an important player.
31:56 And I think of Elliott and Gerrard,
31:58 and they understand that.
31:59 And that was a big--
32:01 that was my value.
32:02 It wasn't so much physical.
32:04 It was the how much I work, the work you put in.
32:08 It doesn't go unnoticed.
32:09 So this year, these next three years, man,
32:12 I want to win a Super Bowl.
32:13 That is the biggest goal, of course, of course.
32:16 But that takes a team thing.
32:17 So me pulling my weight at another level,
32:22 just being a leader, being more vocal.
32:24 I do a good job leading by example,
32:26 but being more vocal, telling guys,
32:28 just keeping it real, like, bro, we have to hold ourselves
32:30 to a higher standard.
32:32 And so just this next three years,
32:34 Super Bowl is in there, captain, come back player of the year,
32:38 you know, different things personally.
32:41 But ultimately, just being the best teammate, man,
32:43 I can be, just working and helping others.
32:45 And more, I was just trying to help players off the field,
32:48 too.
32:49 Being that example on the field, doing right with money,
32:52 those things help you be a better football player.
32:54 When you have your finances right off the field,
32:56 you don't stress so much about just playing for money.
32:59 You do it for more to level the game,
33:01 and those little things that teach pop, Taekwon,
33:04 zappying those things when they're out here,
33:06 just building those relationships, man.
33:08 So I'm excited, man, to see--
33:10 because that three years went by fast,
33:11 so I know it's going to go by fast again.
33:14 And just taking advantage of the time.
33:16 Yeah.
33:18 Kendrick, I got to be honest.
33:19 I wish you would aim higher.
33:20 I feel like you can do more than Super Bowl champion,
33:22 come back player of the year, captain all at once,
33:25 get another ring, get another contract.
33:27 You are a man not short on dreams.
33:30 That's great stuff.
33:31 And look, you put it together in 2023.
33:33 I think a lot of people go, oh, contract year.
33:35 Of course.
33:36 Now he puts it together.
33:37 You had a lot going on in your personal life.
33:39 And I don't say that because you've come on the podcast.
33:41 I say it because I know you better
33:43 than a lot of other guys in the locker room.
33:44 And I think Vanessa deserves a shout out,
33:46 your new physical therapist.
33:48 Alex, living with you day to day just to hang out with you
33:51 and treat your knee, that's a big commitment.
33:53 That shows you what you value because, look,
33:55 just like any of us, look down our bank statements.
33:57 You're putting your money and your time
33:59 into what you prize most.
34:00 Right now for you, that's your health, that's your body,
34:02 that's your career, and everything else
34:04 we just talked about.
34:06 Man, bro, for sure.
34:07 Shout out Vanessa, baby.
34:09 Shout out to my guy Alex, for sure, bro.
34:11 All these people-- I just had actually a good dinner,
34:15 celebration dinner.
34:16 They surprised me.
34:17 I was very surprised.
34:18 But I had all the people that have helped me, Henry,
34:21 my agent.
34:21 And it was heartwarming, man.
34:23 And it shows me that I'm taking the correct steps.
34:27 It's big.
34:27 It's big.
34:28 And people talk about the money.
34:30 Everybody wants $100 million, but $5 million
34:33 is a blessing, bro.
34:34 And if you look at it the right way
34:37 and have the right perspective, you can do it again and again.
34:39 But it's all about what you do off the field that can make
34:43 it fruitful for a lifetime.
34:46 Right, right.
34:47 All right, I appreciate you.
34:48 We will let you go.
34:49 I'm just going to assume my invite to that party
34:51 was lost in the mail.
34:52 It's not a big deal.
34:53 But thank you for coming on, my guy.
34:54 And we will chat soon, all right?
34:56 Yes, sir.
34:56 Thank you, Andrew.
34:58 All right, our Fran segment continues with Jordan Boss
35:00 out of Dorchester.
35:01 Thank you very much, Jordan, for donating, asking a question,
35:04 and generally keeping our viewership up.
35:06 I know you've been listening from the get-go.
35:08 Pets Interference, how are you, pal?
35:10 I'm doing good.
35:10 Happy to be on the show.
35:12 It feels weird not listening to you while walking the dog.
35:14 But no, I'm happy to be on and happy for what
35:17 you're doing with the Boston Children's Hospital
35:19 and for Doug and his family.
35:20 So happy to be on, but also happy to donate.
35:22 Awesome.
35:23 All right, well, first we have to talk about the dog.
35:25 What kind is it?
35:26 What's its name?
35:27 How long have you had it?
35:28 Golden Retriever, named Captain.
35:31 He's five years old.
35:32 He's going to be the happiest, most energetic dog
35:34 that you're going to run into if you're
35:35 roaming the streets of Dorchester or Southie
35:37 or wherever you're going to be.
35:38 So yeah, he's on fan club, I feel like.
35:41 But no, he's the best.
35:43 Beautiful.
35:44 All right, so if you are in Dorchester or Southie,
35:46 please say hello to Captain.
35:47 I had even money that that dog's name was Brady,
35:49 just based on your background for the folks who
35:50 are not on YouTube.
35:51 We have a Brady jersey and Gronk framed behind Jordan.
35:55 Yeah, I mean, Brady's is too easy.
35:57 I almost went Jules, but I figured, boy,
35:59 Jules might not work.
36:00 Maybe the next dog.
36:02 Yeah, do you share that with a partner or anything, the dog?
36:05 Nope, it's all mine.
36:06 Single dog dad life over here.
36:07 Nice, single dog dad life.
36:08 Love it.
36:09 All right, let's get to your question here.
36:11 Big offseason right now as we're recording this.
36:13 It's mid to late in free agency.
36:15 A lot of the big names are off the board.
36:16 So you're looking ahead of the draft.
36:17 And you ask, quote, "The Patriots' three biggest needs
36:20 are still QB1, wide receiver one, and left tackle.
36:22 Which do you address in the first two rounds of the draft?
36:24 And which do you address via trade or free agency?"
36:28 So before I give an answer, what's yours?
36:30 I think getting your left tackle is going to be much easier.
36:32 You're kind of kicking that future can down the road.
36:35 So give me Tyron Smith.
36:36 I know we might not win the Super Bowl next year,
36:38 which he might want.
36:39 But if you can get him, just back up the brink stride,
36:42 get him for a one or two year deal,
36:45 play left tackle for your next franchise quarterback, which
36:47 I think you take in the draft.
36:48 And that receiver class is loaded.
36:50 So I'd rather take a Golab Makonke at 34
36:53 than overpay for Ridley or give up a second round pick
36:56 for T. Higgins and then pay him.
36:58 So give me the left tackle in free agency,
37:00 meaning specifically Tyron Smith.
37:02 I don't want Chucks as my right him in left tackle day one.
37:06 If Tyron Smith gets hurt, then have Chucks at left tackle,
37:09 maybe.
37:10 But I think you go left tackle in free agency, quarterback
37:14 three, receiver at 34, or switch those.
37:17 And if you want to give me Marvin Harrison Jr. in Pennix,
37:19 I'm good with that.
37:21 And then take your left tackle in the third round
37:23 or the fourth round and develop him
37:24 so when Tyron Smith gets hurt or retires or just goes
37:28 and chases a Super Bowl ring, you
37:29 have that third round pick tackle to fill in for next year
37:33 or take a first round pick tackle in 2025.
37:36 I like the thought process.
37:37 I'm inclined to agree with you.
37:39 And honestly, I think I do.
37:40 Because I talked about this with Jardi earlier in the week.
37:43 The way the board falls right now with starters at left
37:46 tackle that you could conceivably plug and play.
37:48 And it's still mid-March.
37:49 No one really knows anything.
37:50 There are no guarantees, which I just
37:52 love hearing about the top of the quarterback conversation.
37:54 Oh, there's no guarantee that they'll work out number three.
37:56 That's the draft, man.
37:57 There's no guarantees anywhere.
37:59 But they need to take a quarterback.
38:03 That's my guarantee.
38:04 That's my number one guarantee.
38:05 They're going to draft one.
38:05 They need to.
38:06 So you're going receiver or offensive tackle.
38:08 And I think considering their picks in the board
38:11 and what's available, you need a younger pipeline of receivers.
38:14 And right now with Anwani back, you call him Chucks,
38:16 Chukumu Okorafor.
38:17 I'm probably going to go with Chucks.
38:19 That's his name.
38:19 If he doesn't take any offense, that's much easier,
38:21 much better.
38:22 I'm inclined to agree with you.
38:23 And it could be Tyron Smith.
38:24 It could be Mekhi Becton.
38:26 It could be Jonah Williams.
38:27 Like I said before, I think they're out on.
38:28 But there are more options there, even stopgap.
38:31 And within the next two years, if they start,
38:34 you get a developmental player who
38:36 might be in that third round territory.
38:38 So you go quarterback, receiver, offensive tackle.
38:39 I like it a lot.
38:40 Yeah, I feel like those three picks have
38:43 to be your first three picks.
38:44 I feel like last year, no offense to these players,
38:46 Keon White, Marte Maku.
38:47 I'm sure they're going to be good players.
38:49 I like what I saw from Keon White.
38:50 But you went defense three rounds, the first three rounds.
38:53 You cannot do that.
38:54 And now you have to go those three picks.
38:57 Luckily, you have the third pick.
38:59 And then you have great depth at tackle and receiver
39:02 in this draft.
39:02 So it kind of works out pretty perfectly.
39:04 But yeah, I agree.
39:05 And I'd rather get a stopgap tackle
39:07 than a stopgap receiver.
39:08 So you got to go those three.
39:10 And you pray your line holds up for a rookie quarterback,
39:15 because I do not want the Mack Jones situation again.
39:17 Like you mentioned with Giardi on the last podcast,
39:20 both of them screwed up.
39:21 But if you supported Mack, maybe you're not looking
39:23 for a quarterback at number three.
39:24 Maybe you're not even drafting at three right now.
39:26 So I think you got to go those three, first three
39:28 in the draft.
39:29 But I think get the stopgap tackle,
39:31 and then one, two rounds, receiver, quarterback,
39:35 or vice versa.
39:36 So you mentioned you love Lambek Conkey.
39:38 Do you have any other draft crushes
39:39 you want to share with us?
39:41 I'm definitely not a draft guy.
39:42 I'm a huge Michigan fan.
39:44 Go blue.
39:44 I love Roman Wilson.
39:45 I don't want to draft him in the second round.
39:47 I don't think he's going to be that number.
39:50 Because I feel like if you pick--
39:51 He had a good senior goal.
39:52 Him and Ricky Pearsall are now like quartercoach shooting
39:55 off the board as much as you can.
39:56 For me, Roman Wilson is definitely
39:58 going to be that--
40:01 almost like a Julian Edelman.
40:02 And I'm not saying they're physically the same,
40:03 but that you love this guy.
40:05 He's going to fight for you.
40:06 He's going to get that key third down, stuff like that.
40:09 But I want a true number one receiver.
40:11 I'm not sure-- I'm not a big draft guy.
40:13 I don't know if Lambek Conkey's that guy.
40:14 But go get that guy that's going to be your number one.
40:16 Because if you take a guy in the first or second round,
40:19 with the way our receiver room looks,
40:22 he's going to be your first--
40:23 he's going to be wide receiver number one.
40:25 At least that's what you're signing him to be.
40:27 Because Bourne is a number two at best.
40:29 Pop Douglas is a number two at best.
40:31 Taequann Thornton, I don't care if he got beefed up.
40:33 I don't think he's making this roster.
40:35 But I think he's going to be a number two.
40:37 I think he's going to be a number two.
40:38 I think he's going to be a number two.
40:40 I think he's going to be a number two.
40:41 I think he's going to be a number two.
40:43 I think he's going to be a number two.
40:44 I think he's going to be a number two.
40:46 I think he's going to be a number two.
40:48 I think he's going to be a number two.
40:49 I think he's going to be a number two.
40:51 I think he's going to be a number two.
40:52 I think he's going to be a number two.
40:54 I think he's going to be a number two.
40:56 I think he's going to be a number two.
40:57 I think he's going to be a number two.
40:59 I think he's going to be a number two.
41:00 I think he's going to be a number two.
41:02 I think he's going to be a number two.
41:03 I think he's going to be a number two.
41:05 I think he's going to be a number two.
41:06 I think he's going to be a number two.
41:08 I think he's going to be a number two.
41:10 I think he's going to be a number two.
41:11 I think he's going to be a number two.
41:13 I think he's going to be a number two.
41:14 I think he's going to be a number two.
41:16 I think he's going to be a number two.
41:17 I think he's going to be a number two.
41:19 I think he's going to be a number two.
41:20 I think he's going to be a number two.
41:22 I think he's going to be a number two.
41:24 I think he's going to be a number two.
41:25 I think he's going to be a number two.
41:31 I think he's going to be a number two.
41:33 I think he's going to be a number two.
41:35 I think he's going to be a number two.
41:37 I think he's going to be a number two.
41:39 I think he's going to be a number two.
41:41 I think he's going to be a number two.
41:43 I think he's going to be a number two.
41:45 I think he's going to be a number two.
41:47 I think he's going to be a number two.
41:49 I think he's going to be a number two.
41:51 I think he's going to be a number two.
41:53 I think he's going to be a number two.
41:55 I think he's going to be a number two.
41:57 I think he's going to be a number two.
41:59 I think he's going to be a number two.
42:01 I think he's going to be a number two.
42:03 I think he's going to be a number two.
42:05 I think he's going to be a number two.
42:07 I think he's going to be a number two.
42:09 I think he's going to be a number two.
42:11 I think he's going to be a number two.
42:13 I think he's going to be a number two.
42:15 I think he's going to be a number two.
42:17 I think he's going to be a number two.
42:19 I think he's going to be a number two.
42:21 I think he's going to be a number two.
42:23 I think he's going to be a number two.
42:25 I think he's going to be a number two.
42:27 I think he's going to be a number two.
42:29 I think he's going to be a number two.
42:31 I think he's going to be a number two.
42:33 I think he's going to be a number two.
42:35 I think he's going to be a number two.
