00:00 Amid the escalating violence, no safety and no hope for these French nationals in Haiti,
00:07 the only option left was to evacuate the country.
00:11 It wasn't an easy decision to make because I still have family there. But I had to think
00:16 about the children. It was perhaps the only chance for the French to evacuate. We didn't
00:20 want to get stuck.
00:23 It's quite a mixed feeling. It's also a feeling of having abandoned people. So on one hand
00:30 you're relieved for yourself and for your family, but on the other hand you feel a bit
00:35 guilty and a lot of stress for the people who are staying behind.
00:40 They are over 160 French nationals in a group of 243 people evacuated earlier in the week
00:48 who arrived on three French Navy ships to Martinique on Friday.
00:53 Local authorities have given them the option to go straight back to mainland France from
00:57 there. Haiti is home to 1,100 French citizens, most of whom hold a dual nationality. But
01:04 violence, poor sanitary conditions and acute food insecurity have made it increasingly
01:10 difficult to stay.
