00:00Filling up sandbags, residents in Louisiana braced themselves ahead of Hurricane Francine's expected landfall.
00:07We're out here shoveling sand for the storm because in 2016 we had a horrible storm.
00:13You know, it messed over everything. Everybody's houses got reconstructed. Everybody's houses got flooded.
00:19I guess ain't nobody have enough sandbags, so we're out here getting some sandbags today.
00:23Nearby, shoppers stocked up on essentials in preparation for potential road closures and loss of services.
00:30I just left out the store and I saw one cart that was ahead of me with nothing but water in it.
00:36They had about eight or nine, ten little packs of water.
00:42On Tuesday, Francine grew in power over the Gulf of Mexico, intensifying from a tropical storm into a Category 1 hurricane.
00:50Residents have been warned of a life-threatening storm surge.
00:54Several of the state's coastal communities are under evacuation orders, and some schools and colleges have been closed.
01:01Francine has also prompted U.S. oil and gas companies on the Gulf of Mexico, including Shell, to evacuate staff and put some operations on hold.
