00:00 (knocking)
00:01 - Hey Jon Bon Jovi, it's men's health.
00:03 At least I hope you brought a pizza.
00:08 (upbeat music)
00:12 I'm Jon Bon Jovi, welcome to my house
00:16 and show you the gym and the fridge.
00:19 (upbeat music)
00:24 (upbeat music)
00:26 All right, let's see that kitchen.
00:35 Welcome to the fridge.
00:37 What staples do you keep in there?
00:39 This and this.
00:40 Welcome to my fridge.
00:44 Fruit, lots of grapes, lots of blueberries,
00:48 fresh vegetables, I like yogurt, hummus is a good snack.
00:52 Lots of water with electrolytes, greens.
00:56 That's really the size of it, lots of vegetables,
00:58 lots of proteins from chicken and eggs and fish.
01:02 What would we never see in your fridge?
01:04 If I can help it, but I don't get a vote around here,
01:07 cucumbers, not my favorite thing.
01:11 Raw carrots, not my favorite thing.
01:13 I'm not a very picky eater.
01:15 Everything in moderation, including moderation.
01:17 It's Bon Jovi's 40th anniversary.
01:19 How has the band's diet changed over the years?
01:22 You know, I think we used to live on McDonald's drive-thru.
01:27 I haven't been anywhere near a place like that
01:31 in I don't remember how many years.
01:34 A lot less carbs in the form of pastas
01:37 and I guess we're more conscious of things like gluten.
01:40 Gluten-free pasta is just horrible.
01:42 I'm not interested.
01:44 Although you can get a good gluten-free pizza
01:47 if you know how to make it.
01:50 That's the pizza delivery guy
01:51 that I have waiting at the gate.
01:53 Impeccable timing.
01:54 What do you eat before a huge performance?
01:57 I used to eat a big plate of pasta
02:00 and chicken would be my typical pre-show meal.
02:05 Cut that out in the last few years
02:07 with a concern about gluten.
02:08 You know, it makes a difference.
02:10 If I really wanted an indulge,
02:12 I'm still not afraid of a great peanut butter
02:14 and jelly sandwich.
02:15 Has your recent throat surgery affected your diet?
02:20 It hasn't impacted my diet at all.
02:22 I've always been on my game
02:24 when it came to being health conscious.
02:27 None of that really gonna make a big difference
02:30 to something that's as big as your thumbnail,
02:32 which is your vocal cords.
02:33 They're that big.
02:35 What's the toughest diet you've tried?
02:37 I was gluten-free, dairy-free, alcohol-free,
02:40 sugar-free during the course of the last tour.
02:43 I was very skinny, but it wasn't any fun.
02:50 Do you drink coffee?
02:51 I've limited my coffee intake,
02:53 where it used to be a hell of a lot more.
02:56 Now it's a cup in the morning.
02:58 I went through my diet Red Bull stage.
03:02 You won't get me near one of those ever again.
03:04 How do you maintain a healthy diet
03:06 with such a busy schedule?
03:07 Not always easy.
03:08 You know, I will succumb to sugar.
03:11 Guilty as charged.
03:12 I'm drinking Hampton Water Rose,
03:14 but you're not gonna find me having a bottle of Red anymore.
03:17 I'm not gonna really have a steak all that often.
03:21 If I want my protein, I get it out of chicken or even fish.
03:24 What do you eat for breakfast?
03:26 An egg over easy on some Nova Scotia lox
03:29 and a piece of whole wheat toast
03:31 with some avocado spread on it.
03:33 Fills me up for a good part of the day.
03:35 What does your cheat meal look like?
03:37 A great New York pizza,
03:39 full of pepperoni and sausage and onions
03:41 and peppers and anchovies and you name it.
03:43 What do you put in your protein shakes?
03:45 Just ice because the TB12 chocolate protein shake
03:49 is actually pretty darn good.
03:51 And then we have a hydrating electrolyte drink
03:54 that I stick in as much of my water as I can.
03:59 Not only does it taste good,
04:00 but it's keeping me hydrated and doing good.
04:02 What do you grab from the fridge
04:03 when you're hungry at 2 a.m.?
04:05 Then late night, these are my friend.
04:08 So there's nothing innocent about that.
04:11 All right, I'm done with the fridge.
04:14 Let me show you the gym.
04:16 All right, let's hit the gym.
04:17 After you, John.
04:18 I like to be in the gym.
04:23 That just, the endorphin rush is something
04:26 that I'm very comfortable with on a daily basis.
04:31 Typically first thing in the morning.
04:33 How often do you work out?
04:35 Five or six days a week.
04:37 A little something each day.
04:39 How has your exercise routine changed over time?
04:42 You know, it had because I was doing
04:44 a lot of the usual pumping weights and running.
04:48 And as I've gotten older,
04:50 inflammation and injury started to creep in.
04:53 So I approached it much differently.
04:56 And so the pliability and the stretching and the bands
04:59 and everything that we do with that
05:02 keeps me not only fit, but feeling good.
05:05 Do you have a trainer?
05:08 Look at her, she's 94 years old.
05:10 Can you believe that?
05:11 This is Felicia Pellegrini,
05:13 who is my trainer and motivator.
05:17 I was having a lot of pain.
05:18 I was getting cortisone shots,
05:21 constantly at the chiropractor.
05:22 I was doing cryotherapies.
05:25 Since we have had Felicia in our lives
05:29 and this whole pliability approach to things,
05:31 I don't think I've seen a chiropractor three times
05:34 in the last 10 months.
05:35 Chiropractor's working for us on the road for 30 plus years.
05:39 Now it's all been eliminated.
05:41 Hey Felicia, tell us the truth.
05:43 What exercises does John hate?
05:45 It's always, "Oh, I don't wanna run," but then after.
05:47 So glad we did that.
05:49 That's what I say every time.
05:50 Do you do anything outside of the gym to stay fit?
05:54 I love to play tennis.
05:55 You know, I mean, if I could play tennis,
05:57 if I could be on the seniors handicap division
05:59 of professional tennis, that's my aspiration.
06:02 How does working out help you as an artist?
06:06 Getting rid of inflammation,
06:07 no matter if you're an athlete or a performer
06:11 or you're going to work every day,
06:14 you don't want your knees and your ankles
06:16 and your elbows to hurt.
06:17 What motivates you to stay fit?
06:19 I look in the mirror and I go, "Holy shit,
06:21 "you ain't as young as you used to be."
06:23 How do you keep your mind fit?
06:25 That's a work in progress like anyone else.
06:27 You have to find your motivation
06:30 and it doesn't have to be to get on the stage.
06:32 It just has to be to wanna go to work
06:34 or to play with your kids or to just enjoy your weekend.
06:37 You know what you'd prefer to do with pain free.
06:40 So finding things that motivate you
06:41 to stay fit mentally or physically
06:44 are only gonna be a benefit.
06:46 What kind of music do you listen to when you work out?
06:48 It's a variety, but as of late,
06:50 we've been very excited that there's a full-time
06:53 Bon Jovi channel on Sirius XM.
06:55 So we listen to channel 312
06:56 and we've been monitoring the brand new
06:59 Bon Jovi radio station on Sirius.
07:02 Do you have any scars?
07:03 Plenty, everything from calf tears
07:05 to plantar fasciitis surgery,
07:06 to meniscus, shoulder, and of course my throat
07:11 that the doctor enjoyed cutting with a butter knife.
07:15 Damn, that sounds intense.
07:17 Let's see if you can keep the faith
07:19 through rapid fire questions.
07:20 Workout time, 7 a.m. or 7 p.m.?
07:26 A.m.
07:27 Squat or deadlift?
07:28 Squat.
07:29 Crossfit, yay or nay?
07:31 Yeah.
07:32 Pull-ups or chin-ups?
07:33 Ooh, chin-ups.
07:35 Dumbbells or kettlebells?
07:37 No, no, no, dumbbells.
07:38 Run on the treadmill or the great outdoors?
07:41 Outside.
07:43 Cardio or weights?
07:44 Cardio.
07:45 Big legs or big arms?
07:47 Big arms, guns, baby.
07:49 Biggest compliment, jacked, ripped, swole, or cut?
07:53 Cut.
07:54 If you could work out with anyone,
07:55 dead or alive, who would it be?
07:57 Arnold.
07:58 Arnold, classic.
08:01 All right, it's done good.
08:02 Pizza for everybody.
08:03 Goodbye, see you later.
08:04 Get out, see ya.
08:05 Don't let the door hit you in the ass.
08:07 (laughing)
08:10 (upbeat music)
