00:00Hey Sebastian it's Men's Health. Hey Men's Health this is Sebastian Maniscalco
00:08I don't normally answer the door but word has it you're here to check out my
00:13gym and fridge.
00:19Come on in.
00:30All right let's see what's in the fridge. Please don't let the stripes fool you
00:40there is some deliciousness behind the fridge. Check it out. That is a very
00:49organized refrigerator. It doesn't generally look this this neat. Like up
00:54here this this is for strictly color. We bought this just for the look. We
00:59appreciate the effort. What staples do you always have in there? Staples in my
01:03refrigerator are eggs. I'm a huge egg guy. In the morning I like to have about three
01:09or four eggs coupled with a little salmon and some avocado. That's generally
01:15my morning breakfast. I'm going on tour. When we get in tour mode we eat a little
01:21bit more healthier. Tomatoes, some carrots, love a little broccoli. We have a little
01:26garden in the back. Some basil, some parsley and this is our fresh tomatoes
01:32from our gardens. Farm to mouth here people. Farm to mouth. What's harder the
01:38diet or the training? The training is not an issue. It's out of the gym that I
01:43have the issue. It's in the refrigerator. It's with the wine and with drinking
01:48wine comes not healthy food. So I'm not here to lie to you people. I'm not a Mark
01:53Wahlberg. I'm not a Frank Grillo. I'm not a Kevin Hart. All right. I am struggling
02:00to stay in shape. To be quite honest I'm kind of stunned that you even asked me
02:06to be on this show. What would we never see in your fridge? Every Friday growing up my
02:14mother would make liver with onions. Okay. It was awful but she never veered from
02:22the menu. That's the difference with parenting back in the 80s. You got what
02:29you got and if you didn't eat it you would be hungry. How many meals do you
02:35eat in a day? I eat about three meals a day. Now my wife Lana is really on me
02:41with food consumption. I'm Italian so I'm constantly foraging for food. I've been
02:48known to go in the garage and sneak a meal in the garage. Some men cheat on
02:58their wife. I don't. But what I hide is my meals in the garage. I'm 50 years old and
03:05I'm in the garage eating a chipotle for Christ's sake. We all have something. How
03:10has your diet changed over the years? I've gotten a little bit more cautious
03:15when it comes to food because I'm getting a little bit older. I used to just
03:19kind of eat what I want and the weight used to fall off. I used to eat a half a
03:24pound of pasta before I went to bed with butter and cinnamon. Now we can't do that
03:31anymore. Is it hard to stay healthy when you're touring? When I'm on the road I
03:35feel like we are a lot more on point with the diet. When I'm home I tend to
03:41eat a little bit more just because I got kids and I'm picking off what they're
03:45eating. What's your go-to protein? I'm a big meat guy. Love meat. This happens to
03:52be a pork chop. Double. Double pork chop. I typically like fillet, New York and
03:58ribeye but I took out a pork chop today because I wanted to make it for my
04:04kids and I also wanted to have it myself. Now I'm 50 and I probably shouldn't be
04:10eating this much meat. We do have a heart issue in our family. It's a
04:16hereditary that men in my family drop dead of a heart attack around this age.
04:24So hopefully I'll be alive to see this air. Well while you're still with us, what
04:32food can't you live without? One food I can't live without is pasta. Not
04:36necessarily in the refrigerator but it is here in the house. It could be any
04:40type of pasta. My personal favorite is a little spaghetti with bolognese with a
04:46little meat sauce. So yeah that's that's my favorite. What's your snack strategy?
04:51I have kids ages six and four so we like to give them fruit, berries, strawberries.
04:58I like a little grape to get your day started. What's your go-to burger order?
05:06I make a fabulous, fabulous burger here at the house if you ask anybody here. My
05:12wife, my kid, our nanny loves my burger. Now the way I cook my burger is on the
05:19grill. Alright I like to buy almost like a brioche type bun. Put a little butter
05:26on each side of the bun. Put that on the grill. Cheddar cheese. Two slices. A
05:32beautiful heirloom tomato. A lot of people don't go with an heirloom. But I
05:40like an heirloom. I like a white onion. Nice white onion. Some butter lettuce,
05:45ketchup, mustard, and mayonnaise. That is is my burger. What do you grab from the
05:53fridge when you're hungry at 2 a.m.? At 2 a.m. I don't get out of bed unless I have
05:58to go to the bathroom and that's at least once a night. If I snack now at 50
06:03it's gonna take three and a half weeks to burn that off. Do you drink protein
06:09shakes? Not a big shake guy. I like to go old school with just some scrambled eggs.
06:16Do you drink coffee? I drink coffee in the morning. Two Splendas in there and some
06:21almond milk. I also tend to drink an energy drink along with the coffee maybe
06:27a little bit further into the into the morning. I'm just trying to stay awake
06:32until bedtime and I'm having an issue with that. I've noticed I'm taking naps
06:37now. Pass out for for 30 minutes. I don't know if that's a caffeine crash or I'm
06:44dying. All right everybody you got a great look at my refrigerator, my
06:49nutrition, what my daily routine is when it comes to food. But now people you're
06:54gonna get an inside look at my gym and my beautiful traps. Let's go see those
07:05traps. Just put in some pickleball courts. I'm gonna start playing pickleball
07:11because apparently that's what you do when you turn 50. You don't play tennis
07:16anymore. You play pickleball with senior citizens. This is it. Welcome to my gym.
07:27Let's see what goes down in here. Being a fitness family here at the Mascalco
07:32household flexibility is definitely important and not necessarily for in the
07:37gym activities. It's more so for outside the gym. Lana and I being parents there's a
07:43lot of bending, picking up of our kids, transport. I thought you were going to say something else.
07:48I thought you were going somewhere else. Or do you want to explain to the audience?
07:53No. I'm glad you didn't. I think Lana was headed maybe towards the bedroom maybe.
07:59I was surprised if he was going to say that because that's not his style. Well apparently that's where my
08:04wife's mind lives in the gutter. So I never really used to stretch because I
08:11would literally walk into the gym and start hitting biceps and chest and
08:15whatnot. But as I got a little bit older you got to stretch and warm up your
08:21muscles which a good portion of the workout actually getting me ready for
08:27the workout. How often do you work out? Generally speaking I work out about five
08:32days a week Monday through Friday. Take Saturday and Sundays off. Maybe do
08:37something active with the kids or Lana and I will play some pickleball or go go
08:42for a hike just to keep the body moving. What's your favorite body part to train?
08:46My favorite body part to train is back. It's the only part of my body really
08:53that doesn't hurt. My worst body part to train is legs. Legs has always been
08:59something that I've neglected over the years. I used to play soccer so I didn't
09:04really have to work on my legs. Almost the sport alone would give my legs a
09:09workout. How has your workout changed over time? I was in my 20s and 30s and
09:13early 40s it was primarily aesthetics. It used to be a lot of weight training. I
09:19remember I was in my 20s. How much could you bench?
09:24Gorillas in the gym walking around slapping plates together. There's no more
09:29plates. Now it's more being mindful of nutrition, being flexible. I don't really
09:36care if I have the biggest chest or the biggest biceps or biggest legs. It's not
09:40the intention here. The intention is more mobility. What keeps you motivated to
09:45stay fit? Now that I have kids, especially when you have kids late in life, you know
09:48you want to be around for them. Working out is more keeping myself alive. What
09:57are your current fitness goals? My goal is to maintain the flexibility I have on
10:04stage. I'm extremely physical when I'm performing stand-up comedy and movement
10:10is a big part of my act. My shoulders are numb, my fingertips, I can't, I can't feel
10:15nothing babe, go back. How often do you switch up your workout routine? Jack is
10:19very good about switching up the workouts during the week. Not mundane,
10:23it's not boring. He'll implement different exercises due to how I'm
10:28feeling and what have you. I've often commented to him, I know how many
10:31different exercises do you have in that head? My wife Lana is trying to get me
10:39into Pilates. We do have some Pilates machines here. Maybe that's the next step
10:44in my workout journey. So now we're working on back movements. Sebastian's is
10:50a little bit more modified to, you know, scare his injuries. Guys, you notice how
10:56Jack said my exercise is modified translation? My exercise is easy. Do you have any scars? I
11:07have two ruptured biceps and if you want to zoom in, I don't know if you could
11:15tell there's a hole right here in the bicep area here. Snapped my biceps. How?
11:22Don't know. This has been going on now for three years. I don't know if I picked
11:28up my kids one day and they snapped and I was unaware but just wanted to let
11:33you know that I have no biceps. I do have a bicep but I have a one, two tendons
11:39that are snapped. She might be out of breath but I am. All right. Leave this in too.
11:48Put this on editing floor. Leave this in. This is real sh**. Okay. Do you use any special
11:55equipment? I like to get into the ice bath post-workout early in the morning.
12:01It's something about being in there for two or three minutes and getting out. It's
12:04almost like mental caffeine. You come out, you feel invigorated. If you could
12:08conquer the ice bath, two, three minutes in there, the theory is you could conquer
12:12anything that the day is gonna have to throw you. Let's see if you can conquer
12:16these rapid-fire questions. Workout time, 7 a.m. or 7 p.m.? 7 a.m. Squat or deadlift?
12:22Squat. Favorite song on your workout playlist? Billie Jean. Crossfit, yay or
12:27nay? Nay. Pull-ups or chin-ups? Pull-ups. Dumbbells or kettlebells? Dumbbells.
12:32Run on the treadmill or in the great outdoors? The great outdoors. Cardio or
12:37weights? Cardio. Big legs or big arms? Big arms. Biggest compliment, jacked, ripped,
12:43swole or cut? Cut. If you could work out with anyone in the world, dead or alive,
12:46who would it be? Sylvester Stallone. Nice. The Italian Stallion himself. That's it
12:52everybody. I opened the house, I showed you my gym, I showed you my fridge, I showed
12:58you my ice bath. Not a lot of people get to take a peek at my ice bath, but
13:02appreciate you guys coming over and spending the morning with me. Now I'm gonna
13:06ask to ask you to get the hell out of here.
