Pitbull thinks she's every cat's mommy
Transcript
00:00Ginger was pregnant at maybe two or three days before she was scheduled to be euthanized.
00:05She was just so scared.
00:06My name is Susan Hicks and this is Ginger's story for GEOBeasts.
00:09I agreed to take her in and she gave birth to nine living puppies here at my house.
00:17We found them all homes and by the time it was time to find her a home,
00:21I realized that I just couldn't give her up.
00:22She was just so sweet and so kind and so gentle.
00:26At the time, I also had had other cats and I realized that the cats gravitated towards her
00:31and she loved their company.
00:35And I thought that if I wanted to continue fostering and rescuing,
00:38that she would really be a great addition to the permanent household.
00:42When I have kittens now, she doesn't nurse them, obviously,
00:44but she actually will let them nurse on her.
00:47There's no milk.
00:55She knows that they need to be cleaned.
01:01She understands when they need to be fed.
01:03She watches me when I feed them.
01:17Some of the older kittens are a little bit more resistant.
01:19I thought of having like a surrogate doggy mommy,
01:21but after a while, she always breaks them down.
01:24I don't recall any single kitten who came here kind of skeptical
01:28and left in that same way.
01:30Her simple presence with these kittens is so healing for them
01:33when they come and they are sick and they are without their mothers.
01:50When they are afraid and they're cold, she is just there for them.
01:55It's just her very quiet, calm, maternal energy,
01:59which is great for these kittens who get adopted to families
02:03where they have other dogs and there are other animals.
02:07She is our mascot for our animal rescue today.
02:10It's called Forever Animal Rescue.
02:12Having her has literally changed the course of my life
02:16because I was like,
02:17this is just so rewarding.
02:18I've made career choices that have allowed me to be here more often
02:23so that I can foster more and more kittens.
02:25I have a background in science and medicine
02:28and I try to focus on those animals that are sick
02:31or in need of some medical care that I can provide.
02:34There are some kittens that you don't really know what's wrong with them.
02:37There's nothing that you can physically see or put your finger on,
02:40but when I put them with her, they all turn around
02:43and there's something that I can do to help them.
02:47There's something in that ginger magic that turns them around.
02:52Part of what I enjoy doing is showing the world that pit bulls are sweet
02:58and they're loving and they're kind
03:00and they are not these vicious creatures that the media portrays them to be.
