Fish return to the Seine as water quality improves

Wrestling with a large catfish in the middle of Paris, Bill Francois highlights the range of wildlife now living in the Seine. A physicist by day, Bill fishes in the river up to five times a week, surveying what he catches. While positive about improving water quality, Bill is concerned by plans to allow public swimming in the river from summer 2025, saying that it could threaten newly recovered aquatic habitats.

00:00What is this?
00:12It's a cillure.
00:14It's a cillure.
00:17A Parisian cillure.
00:19It's the top of the food chain of the waters of Paris.
00:22It's the family of catfish.
00:24As you can see, catfish because it has moustaches.
00:28It has what we call barbels.
00:30You really have to be a fisherman to marvel at a cillure.
00:33It's true that it's a very strange animal,
00:35but when you know it better, when you understand
00:37what a formidable machine it is,
00:39with its barbels that allow it to taste at a distance,
00:42with its lateral line that allows it to feel the vibrations,
00:45its very, very developed nostrils,
00:47you understand that it's a formidable animal.
00:50It has taste buds all over its body
00:53to feel its prey at a distance.
00:56I don't take it out of the water because we don't want to damage it.
01:00The goal when we fish is to get to know the fish better,
01:04to be able to sense them, to be able to observe them,
01:07to measure them, to know how they grow, etc.,
01:09but above all not to damage them or anything.
01:19There are about forty species of fish in the Seine,
01:22with new species that we discover about every year
01:26when the fishing associations make fish inventory
01:29to study the populations of fish.
01:31Overall, the quality of the water is very good
01:34and it is constantly improving in the Seine.
01:36We see a lot of species coming back, not just fish,
01:39but also aquatic insects, even jellyfish,
01:43crustaceans, small shrimps, sponges,
01:48a whole biodiversity.
01:51Sometimes we even have birds like the Martin Fisher
01:54that come back and nest in the capital.
02:09It is certain that the activities of Vegan will have to be monitored,
02:12especially so that it does not go to the detriment
02:14of the natural habitats of the fish,
02:16and in particular of the fray areas,
02:18that is to say the reproduction areas,
02:20because fish cannot reproduce anywhere.
02:22Depending on the species, they will need very specific areas
02:25and it is very important to ensure that these areas are always present.
