Dallas Cowboys Day 1-2 NFL Draft Review: Scouting 4 Starters?
Transcript
00:00 Day one and day two of this NFL Draft 2024 for the Dallas Cowboys now in the books.
00:07 Let's take stock.
00:09 I'm Mike Fisher.
00:11 We are reporting from Cowboys headquarters in Frisco here at the Star.
00:15 And Dallas, after its first round trade down to pick up an extra pick,
00:21 now has its first group from day one and day two.
00:26 Dane Brugler, our buddy, an NFL draft expert, talks about how a good draft,
00:33 really good draft, would give you four starters out of it.
00:36 I think that's a stretch as we go through the who's who of the Dallas Cowboys group.
00:45 Round one guy, round two guy, round three, and round three.
00:49 And that's the bulk of what you get in the first day.
00:53 So the Cowboys don't have a fourth round pick as we get ready for
00:57 Saturday to close this thing out.
00:59 And then of course there's UDFA chasing after that.
01:02 And the Cowboys historically are very, very good in that department.
01:05 And again, this roster is gonna need bodies, so they'll find some players there.
01:10 I almost guarantee it.
01:12 Maybe because the players are good or maybe because the Cowboys,
01:15 even though they're 12 and 5, 12 and 5, and 12 and 5 the last three years,
01:18 free agency has stripped them of some of that talent.
01:21 They need bodies.
01:22 So here's what they did.
01:23 And here's where they project.
01:25 Round one, pick number 29, the trade down to the Detroit spot,
01:30 they get Tyler Guyton, the offensive tackle from Oklahoma.
01:34 He'll be asked to start.
01:36 I don't think it's fair to say he's a project.
01:38 It is fair to say that he's gonna become, ideally, a lot better,
01:44 a lot bigger, a lot stronger than where he is now.
01:48 But this is a player who did not give up sex as a right tackle at OU and
01:53 who says I'm even more comfortable at left tackle.
01:55 The Cowboys almost deserve the benefit of the doubt when they draft
02:00 an offensive lineman high, don't they?
02:02 Round two, number 56, running back candidates,
02:08 including the leading one, Jonathan Brooks from Texas, not available there.
02:12 It went ten picks earlier to Carolina.
02:15 So the Cowboys surely made the phone call there and
02:19 just decided that the price was too steep.
02:21 So they stay where they're at.
02:22 And this is where you start getting into the, okay, so he's a second round pick,
02:26 56, he's gonna start now.
02:28 No, he's probably not.
02:30 Marshawn Nealon, edge rusher, Western Michigan.
02:34 Let's put him down as a future helper.
02:38 Now, he has a big body.
02:40 He has a 6'3", 280-pound defensive end.
02:43 And so a run-stopping defensive end of a sort,
02:45 hopefully he can get to the pass or two.
02:48 And drawing some comparisons in this building to DeMarcus Lawrence.
02:52 Here's where I think we have to be careful here.
02:53 And I know it's an exciting time for the player, an exciting time for the team.
02:57 And you wanna put your best spin on it.
03:01 They are suggesting in this building, and a lot of people are writing it,
03:05 I'm probably not gonna write it, that he's kinda like DeMarcus Lawrence.
03:10 Yeah, man, I don't know.
03:11 First of all, DeMarcus Lawrence was a lot lighter than that
03:13 when he first came to the league from Boise State.
03:16 And second of all, well, it obviously took DeLaw to become the tank that we know.
03:22 We're talking about a Pro Bowl decade-long guy who gets a $20 million a year contract.
03:28 I don't think it's fair to tank to say that Marshawn Nealon's gonna be that guy.
03:33 And I'm not sure it's fair to Marshawn Nealon too.
03:35 He is not a starter.
03:38 He plays a position that the Dallas Cowboys and Will McLea,
03:41 the personnel boss, value very much.
03:43 But you don't project him as a starter.
03:45 Round three, pick number 73.
03:48 This is the Detroit thing again, Cooper Beebe, offensive lineman,
03:52 Kansas State, who the Cowboys say is gonna be a center.
03:55 And they're talking right now in the Star about how he's gonna compete for
03:59 the center job.
03:59 Too bad for Hoffman, although he'll compete too.
04:02 Beebe says he talked to the Cowboys cuz he played a lot of guard in college.
04:07 Talked to the Cowboys about center, comfortable there.
04:09 The Cowboys will project him as a starter, okay?
04:13 Believable.
04:13 And then also in round three, pick number 87,
04:16 Marist Liu Fou, the Notre Dame linebacker.
04:20 He is talking about how the way for
04:22 me to help the Cowboys is to play special teams, and it's completely true.
04:27 But they also need a linebacker who can take some snaps.
04:30 And this is not a spectacular, off the charts, incredible.
04:35 He's just a good football player at Notre Dame, but
04:39 not a starter at the Dallas Cowboys.
04:42 So what did you accomplish?
04:45 Two starters, not four.
04:47 Can you get a third?
04:48 Yeah, if you draft a running back in the fifth round,
04:51 which I bet you the Cowboys are absolutely thinking of doing.
04:55 At the Star, with the Cowboys, in Frisco, Fish, out.
