00:00 The London Mayoral election is on May 2nd, but what actually are the responsibilities
00:05 of the Mayor? The first is transport. They are responsible for transport for London,
00:10 and have the power to set fares, which is where TfL gets the majority of its funding.
00:15 They also have certain powers over roads in the capital to a certain extent, for example the
00:21 congestion charge and the ultra low emission zones both came from the Mayor's office.
00:26 The Mayor has a degree of control over policing too. They set out how London is policed and
00:31 staffed as well as appointing the Met Police Commissioner and holding them to account.
00:36 Around 30% of the Met's budget comes from the Mayor, the rest comes from National Government.
00:42 When it comes to housing, the Mayor can set affordable home targets and work on them with
00:47 local authorities, but they do receive funding from the National Government as well. Then,
00:52 there is also a responsibility to support London's culture and creative industries.
