Green light for new U-Boat Museum

00:00Plans to create a new museum, cafe and bar on the waterfront with one of the best views in
00:06the world have been given the final sign-off. In October 2023, Big Heritage TIC, which runs
00:11Western Approaches Museum in Liverpool, revealed its plans to revamp and completely transform the
00:16U-Boat Story Museum in Birkenhead. The project's being funded by part of a £19.6 million levelling
00:23up grant, which looks to introduce a new green space, improve the Woodside Ferry Terminal and
00:28create a new international Battle of the Atlantic attraction. Planning permission has now been
00:32granted for the project and Big Heritage previously said it hopes to get spades in
00:36the ground by early summer. The new museum is currently expected to open sometime in August 2025
00:41but will fully launch once £21 million plans to improve the wider area are complete.
00:46The current single-storey museum will be demolished with a new three-storey building
00:51built in its place which has been designed to be tall enough to be seen across the Mersey
00:55while ensuring the views from the Hamilton Square approach are maintained.
