00:00 Transport experts have poured cold water on the proposal to build a light rail transit line in Langkawi.
00:08 The state government plans to develop the LRT line from Kua Ferry Terminal to Pantai Chenang
00:13 before expanding it to other tourist destinations on the island in stages.
00:18 However, transport consultant Rosli Khan said the seasonal nature of tourism in Langkawi
00:23 made the project unfeasible due to low demand, adding that an LRT system was better suited for cities
00:28 with populations of 5 to 6 million.
00:31 Rosli said Langkawi would be better served by a fleet of minibuses,
00:35 which would cover the entire island at a lower cost compared to regular buses.
00:39 Another transport consultant, Wan Agil Wan Hassan, said building an LRT line in Langkawi
00:45 could harm the environment, which is a key tourist attraction on the tax-free island.
00:49 Langkawi Island is pretty much very sensitive because we really want to ensure that we preserve
00:55 whatever Langkawi has. There will definitely be environmental impact when it comes to the construction of LRT
01:01 because it's a huge construction. Those elements are the major attraction to the tourists.
01:07 To minimize potential environmental impacts, Wan Agil suggested exploring bike-sharing services,
01:12 a bus rail transit line or a tram system.
01:15 He also recommended van-sharing services or a hop-on hop-off bus service as possible alternatives.
