00:00 Some Meralko customers were just laughing at the rise in the electric bill this May.
00:06 But Gil added that it's possible to follow the trend in June, according to the Energy Regulatory Commission.
00:11 Watch this, Maki Polido.
00:13 This is the big reveal.
00:20 It's really big because the Meralko bill of Heza La Chica this month is increasing by more than 16,000 pesos.
00:27 It's higher than their usual bill of 11,000 pesos.
00:31 In the middle of the high electric bill, some were just laughing at the problem of Judith.
00:52 Like this neighbor in Quezon City.
00:57 Until some provinces, the bill is shocking.
01:05 Gilbert Dindo was dismayed.
01:08 The bill hasn't been paid yet, but something new has arrived.
01:12 According to the Central Negros Electric Cooperative,
01:14 their electric bill is 1 peso and 73 centavos per kilowatt-hour because of the rise in the market price.
01:22 Because of the rise in the price of electricity in the spot market,
01:33 the Negros Occidental Electric Cooperative has an additional 3 pesos per kilowatt-hour this month.
01:40 The electricity rate in residential, low-voltage and high-voltage commercial establishments has increased by more than a peso
01:46 as stated in the Electric Cooperative Inc. in April.
01:50 In Boracay, in the town of Malay, resort and hotel owners are using energy-saving devices to save money.
01:57 Based on the survey of the Philippine Rural Electric Cooperative Inc.,
02:01 31 cooperatives have said that they have high electricity bills.
02:05 Region 6 or Western Visayas and Region 1 or Ilocos Region are the most affected.
02:10 They are just distributors of electricity, collectors, and remitters.
02:13 We are just worried that consumers will not understand.
02:17 Some electric cooperatives are studying an installment plan for those who are having a hard time paying.
02:22 But the Meralko customers don't expect this.
02:25 The electricity has been consumed.
02:28 For us, it's postpaid. You consume first before customers pay.
02:35 In the current shortage of May, the transmission charge, taxes, and others have increased.
02:41 But the generation charge is the heaviest.
02:43 This is what distributors like Meralko and Electric Cooperatives bought to supply electricity.
02:49 In April, they bought expensive electricity from the Wholesale Electricity Spot Market, or WESEM.
02:55 The price of electricity has increased because some plants were damaged due to a shortage of supply.
03:00 At a time when many people are using electricity because it's too hot,
03:04 the electricity price of Visayas increased by 53 percent and Luzon by 11 percent.
03:10 All of this will be distributed and paid by consumers.
03:14 But it seems that this will not end soon.
03:17 The Energy Regulatory Commission has allowed 30 percent of the electricity plants
03:22 to sell their reserve power in March.
03:25 The ERC is now spending the money because the electricity price is high and it will affect the generation charge.
03:31 The ERC asked for an explanation on why the price is so high.
03:35 The ERC said that it will be affected by the June electric bill, but they haven't said how much.
03:40 Meralko also said that if there is a shortage of electricity supply,
03:44 it may also affect their generation charge.
