00:00 Hello, I'm Sam Morton and here is your daily Sussex News Bulletin on Tuesday, May 21st.
00:06 A Yellow Weather Warning for heavy rain and thunderstorms has been issued across Sussex today.
00:11 Sussex is among the locations across the UK included in the warning which is set to be in place from 12pm until 11.59pm tonight.
00:20 A spokesperson for the Met Office said whilst some places may remain mostly dry, areas of heavy rain and some thunderstorms are expected to develop from around mid-morning.
00:30 The focus is likely to be slow moving heavy showers and thunderstorms, perhaps with hail and lightning, which should gradually ease away later on Tuesday evening.
00:39 The Police Dog Unit was called in as part of a major emergency response to an incident in Brighton overnight.
00:44 Preston Street was called on off in the early hours of this morning.
00:48 An incident reportedly involving a suspicious package was reported around 2.30am.
00:53 Photos from the scene showed multiple police cars, officers and explosive search dogs.
00:58 The street was taped off at both ends.
01:01 Sussex Police issued a statement on Tuesday afternoon confirming that officers were called to report of a suspicious package outside of a property.
01:08 The Explosive Ordnance Disposal Team responded and carried out a controlled explosion.
01:13 The area was declared safe, the road has since been reopened and there are no ongoing concerns, police said.
01:20 Meanwhile, a popular pub and restaurant in East Sussex has announced it will close down in the summer.
01:25 The Treacle Mine in Polgate announced it will close on July 4th as part of Whitbread PLC's.
01:31 Its owners plan to cut 1,500 jobs as it closes restaurants and expands its hotel business.
01:37 The company plans to cut a number of branded restaurants by more than 200 in favour of building more hotel rooms.
01:44 The job cuts, which are subject to consultation, will come from a total UK workforce of 37,000 employees.
01:51 Finally, a major fire was simulated at Chichester Cathedral as part of a large training exercise on Monday.
01:58 During this time, several road closures were in place from 7pm until 11pm with limited access for residents.
02:05 The head of the exercise, the spokesperson for West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service said,
02:09 "Firefighters will simulate a major fire at Chichester Cathedral and there will be a significant amount of smoke issuing from the landmark.
02:16 This will test the emergency procedures that are currently in place, for instance involving the cathedral.
02:20 Partner agencies, including Sussex Police, South East Coast Ambulance Service and West Sussex Highways,
02:26 will immerse themselves in a real-life operational situation and work together to resolve the training scenario."
