Queensland premier Steven Miles says overseas and interstate migration is putting significant pressure on transport infrastructure. He has doubled down on his calls for the Australian government to slash migration, as he pointed to state government modelling that shows migration contributed to 229,000 extra daily trips on road, bus, and rail networks.

00:00 The South East Mayor's swarming on state parliament looking for more money to manage population
00:07 growth.
00:07 And we need support with infrastructure, with our transport.
00:11 We are having a lot of growth here in South East Queensland, we're having a lot of growth
00:15 in Ipswich.
00:16 The Premier says one factor contributing to growth is interstate and overseas migration.
00:21 As a commuter myself I know that traffic's been getting worse.
00:25 And doubling down on his calls for the Federal Government to moderate international migration
00:30 levels.
00:31 Congestion has been getting worse and that's one of the reasons why we're urging the Australian
00:37 Government to give us some time for the infrastructure to catch up.
00:41 This is really cheap politics from the Premier. It's time for them to actually do their job,
00:45 stump up and fund essential services rather than trying to find a bad guy to blame.
00:50 The Government pointing to modelling that says since 2019 there's been a significant increase
00:55 in trips on Queensland's roads, public transport and active networks by net overseas and interstate
01:01 migration. So how do they know it's because of migrants?
01:05 So this is total trips taken during the time that we've seen that migration surge. An increase
01:11 in total trips of 229,000.
01:13 I am not as convinced of those figures as if we had done some of these studies in different
01:20 ways.
01:21 Mr Miles wants to slow the migration rate but says it's not about migrants.
01:25 They are very, very welcome here and I don't blame them for wanting to move here. This
01:29 is simply about saying that the population is growing at a rate faster than we can build
01:35 houses and deliver the infrastructure that we need.
01:38 Multicultural Australia's CEO agrees there are pressures.
01:42 But we are concerned about the way in which the conversation is being framed.
01:47 Brisbane Lord Mayor says there's no single silver bullet.
01:51 We need to slow down the migration rate for a period of time until we can catch our breath.
01:56 We need more investment in public transport across the region and we need to really encourage
02:00 investment in infrastructure as well.
02:02 Late today the Government announced an additional $100 million in funding for the South East
02:07 Councils.
02:07 It should be a guarantee.
