00:12 Warning that even though these twists didn't affect the plot as much as we'd have liked,
00:16 they can still be pretty major spoilers.

00:21 She really does love you, you know."
00:26 10. Emma Gets Cold Feet - Glee
00:30 Getting Married Today is an impressive performance, and the best musical number,
00:34 J.Mamaise, gets during her time on Glee.
00:36 But that doesn't change the fact that this plot twist was totally unnecessary.
00:40 "Well, then, I'm gonna tell me what you should. So, thanks a bunch, but I'm not getting married.
00:43 Go have lunch, 'cause I'm not getting married. You've been grand, but I'm not getting married.
00:46 Don't just stand there, I'm not getting married. Don't tell Will, but I'm not getting married today."
00:49 Will and Emma's "will they, won't they" relationship is a central part of Glee's
00:54 earliest seasons, and by Season 4, it seems they're finally ready to make things official.
00:59 That is, until Emma unexpectedly runs from their wedding.
01:02 She attributes her split-second decision to feeling disconnected from Will after his trip to DC.
01:07 "So you're freaking out because the man you're about to marry parades back into town,
01:12 and you don't feel like you know him anymore."
01:13 The pair decide to commit to getting to know each other all over again,
01:16 but many were disappointed that this turn didn't lead to more development for the couple,
01:21 especially as they got their redo wedding in the season's finale.
01:24 "I know that you and I are meant to be together.
01:27 You are my hero, you are my one true love, you are my inspiration."
01:33 9. The Mother Dies - How I Met Your Mother
01:38 Long before Game of Thrones disappointed fans with The Iron Throne, How I Met Your Mother
01:42 made some similarly controversial choices in its two-part finale, Last Forever.
01:47 The episodes tackle what had been promised by the series from its first title drop
01:51 nine years earlier, how Ted met the mother of his children.
01:55 "Kids, I'm gonna tell you an incredible story. The story of how I met your mother."
02:00 While it delivers on that promise, it also throws in a big curveball.
02:05 In the show's modern day, the mother is dead.
02:07 "And I carried it with me when she got sick.
02:09 Even then, in what can only be called the worst of times, all I could do was thank God."
02:17 Fans barely had time to process the reveal before Ted and Robin
02:20 unexpectedly became an endgame pair, adding insult to injury.
02:24 The moment was so universally maligned that an alternate ending was edited for the season's
02:29 DVD release, undoing the twists for a considerably safer final sequence.
02:34 "See? Easy. And that, kids, is how I met your mother."
02:42 8. Harvey Dent Is Not Two-Face - Gotham
02:46 Part of the fun of a prequel is knowing what lies ahead for a character.
02:50 "You call heads or tails. You lose, you go to jail. You win, we let you go."
02:57 Every one of their actions is influenced not only by their past, but by their predetermined fate.
03:02 So, when Harvey Dent made an appearance in Gotham, fans naturally expected his arc to
03:06 lead up to his inevitable turn towards evil as the villainous Two-Face.
03:11 "I'm sorry, Harvey."
03:15 "No. No, you're not."
03:18 Except...it didn't. After appearing in just eight episodes, Harvey exited the series without the
03:25 development of his not-so-secret identity. Executive producer Jon Stevens claimed that
03:30 this was because Dent, typically, doesn't become Two-Face until after Bruce Wayne becomes Batman.
03:36 But we're not buying it.
03:38 "And you have no idea who or what you're even dealing with."
03:42 "Don't ever threaten me!"
03:44 "I will rip you open."
03:47 After manipulating so many other villain origins to fit Gotham lore,
03:52 it seems unlikely the show couldn't have found a place for the character.
03:56 7. The Laurie Plotline - Euphoria
03:59 After focusing on Rue's threat to herself in its first season,
04:03 season two of Euphoria introduces a new terrifying external threat in the form of Laurie.
04:09 "Mouse ain't gonna be coming around no more."
04:11 "Why's that?"
04:12 "Cause I didn't like the way he did business."
04:16 Rue convinces the dealer to lend her product to begin selling,
04:20 hoping to score free drugs in the process. Unfortunately,
04:23 the $10,000 exchange comes with a pretty hefty warning.
04:27 "Rue, if you screw me, I'll have you kidnapped and sold to some real sick people.
04:32 I always find a way to make my money back."
04:37 When Rue's mother disposes of the drugs, the teen's reaction is fueled not only by dependency,
04:42 but fear. And then, nothing really happens.
04:46 Of course, there's that spine-chilling bathroom scene and the attempted kidnapping that follows,
04:50 but after that, Laurie makes no attempts to follow through on her threat. We know there's more
04:55 episodes to come, but we'd be surprised if this particular plotline was followed up in a satisfying
05:00 way. "Listen, I appreciate you coming here with all this jewelry and stuff, but you're gonna have
05:07 to pay the whole thing in cash. This isn't a pawn shop."
05:10 6. Toby is part of the A-Team - Pretty Little Liars
05:14 Shocking reveals are so commonplace in Pretty Little Liars that it's almost more surprising
05:19 when an episode doesn't have one. "I'll see you soon."
05:22 With so many twists, it's no surprise that some just don't work. One of these ill-advised
05:34 bombshells is the reveal that Spencer's boyfriend, Toby, is part of the A-Team.
05:39 "Spencer. How long have you known?"
05:46 For those unfamiliar with the show, this means that he was working with a group of people
05:50 to terrorize his girlfriend and her friends, sometimes even forcing them into near-death
05:54 experiences. This logically should have made him a villainous character, or at least caused a more
06:00 long-lasting rift in his relationship with Spencer. But it's all excused as him keeping her safe.
06:06 "And you let me believe that you were dead?"
06:08 "Everything I've done so I could protect you."
06:14 If this is what protection looks like, she probably would have been better off without it.
06:18 5. Libby was in the psych ward with Hurley - Lost
06:22 "I'm sick." "What? What's wrong?"
06:29 "Oh. Never mind."
06:34 When a plot twist is forgotten or discarded, it's often the fault of poor planning.
06:40 That was not the case for this Lost twist.
06:42 "But this isn't like you." "Like me? You don't know me."
06:46 "I was starting to."
06:49 During a flashback in the show's second season, a deliberate pan of the camera reveals that Libby
06:55 was a patient at the same psychiatric hospital as Hurley prior to the events of the show. Apparently,
07:01 Libby's backstory was planned to be explored in future seasons, presumably explaining this
07:06 shocking reveal. But actress Cynthia Watrose became too busy following the 2007-2008 writer's
07:13 strike. With no one to act the part, the writers were stuck, and Libby was left as one of the only
07:18 main characters to not get a dedicated flashback episode.
07:23 "It's just being here with you is so familiar. It's like a date we never had."
07:29 4. Clark kills Bellamy - The 100
07:35 "I really hope this new thing you believe in is worth it."
07:39 "It is."
07:40 The relationship between Clark and Bellamy was one of the driving forces of The 100,
07:46 so when Bellamy ultimately met his maker at Clark's hands,
07:50 fans were understandably conflicted. By the show's seventh season, Bellamy has completely
07:55 devoted himself to the Bardoans, making an enemy out of the people he once considered his best
08:01 friends. "I know how hard this is on you, son. Believing in something with all your heart that
08:08 the people you love don't understand." It's no surprise that his turn sealed his fate,
08:12 but dying over a sketchbook, which Clark doesn't even make an attempt to retrieve after killing him,
08:17 just feels wrong. Not to mention, Clark only killed Bellamy in the hopes that it would save
08:22 Maddie, and as we learn just two episodes later, that was a hopeless endeavor.
08:27 "Maddie?
08:28 Something's wrong."
08:38 So, what was the point?
08:40 3. Sam is unhoused - Glee
08:44 "This is everything you own?"
08:45 "We sought everything else."
08:46 When Sam is caught meeting with Quinn and Kurt at a motel in Glee's second season,
08:53 it initially appears he might be carrying out some intimate matters. But when Finn and Rachel
08:58 begin investigating, they quickly learn their assumptions cannot be further from the truth.
09:03 "Shut up! Look, I'm not messing around with Quinn or Kurt or any one of those guys.
09:07 They're just helping me."
09:08 It's revealed that Sam's family have been living in the motel for months,
09:12 after his dad was let go in the recession. The twist is a pretty heavy one for Glee,
09:16 which might explain why the writers were so quick to sweep it under the rug.
09:20 "You know when the bank takes your house, they literally take it.
09:23 They come by one morning and kick you out of your own house. Just lock you out."
09:28 Sam's situation is briefly acknowledged again in the show's following season,
09:32 when his family moves into a new home. But this plot development is forgotten just as quickly.
09:37 2. Freddy's Death - Skins
09:40 As far as teen series go, Skins is pretty dark. So when we say that this plot twist was cruel,
09:46 even for Skins, we truly mean it.
09:49 "Why don't you tell me about that?"
09:50 "Why that? Why not the good stuff?"
09:55 "Because I'm not interested in it."
09:57 In the show's fourth season, Effie begins to have episodes of psychosis,
10:01 which are worsened by her depression. This eventually leads to her hospitalization,
10:06 where she is put under the care of the abusive Dr. Foster.
10:10 "This is a safe place. Peaceful. Away from everyone and everything."
10:18 The old man obsesses over her, compelling her to forget her friends and old life,
10:23 before killing her then-boyfriend, Freddy McClare. While Foster is confronted about
10:28 the murder in the season's finale, afterwards, the show acts as if nothing of note happened.
10:34 "You. You did something to my friend."
10:38 "This is wasting time."
10:39 Neither Effie, nor Freddy's family, are ever told about how he died, or if they are,
10:44 we certainly never see it. Before we unveil our top pick, here are a few honorable mentions.
10:50 Charlie and Dee hook up. It's always sunny in Philadelphia.
10:53 This awkward hook-up could have completely changed the gang's dynamic.
10:57 "Just kidding."
11:04 Boyle's food truck. Brooklyn Nine-Nine. Boyle's dream goes up in flames, and he instantly gives up.
11:11 "Oh God, my truck! This truck was my baby!"
11:14 "Alright, look, Charles, I know you're upset, but maybe there's a silver lining here. I mean,
11:17 you had insurance, right?"
11:18 "Yeah, I already called them."
11:19 "So, maybe you'll get some money for this, and you can pay off your debts, starting with Amy.
11:23 I'm sorry, that was selfish, forget I said it. You can pay off your debts, starting with Amy."
11:26 Rachel and Joey's relationship. Friends. They somehow immediately go back to business as usual
11:32 after this brief romance. "Seriously, goodnight."
11:35 "Stop saying goodnight." "Okay!"

12:11 As the actual daughter of fifth Doctor actor Peter Davison, this character was an unexpectedly
12:17 meta addition to Doctor Who's extended cast. Dubbed Jenny by The Doctor's companion Donna,
12:23 the cloned soldier learns enough about her new dad over the course of the episode to justify
12:28 sacrificing herself for him in its second half. "No!"
12:33 Her apparent death is an emotional moment, somewhat cheapened by her pseudo-regeneration
12:41 in the episode's final moments. Full of energy, she leaps into a shuttle and announces her plan
12:47 to explore the universe, and then is never seen again. "Planets to save, civilizations to rescue,
12:55 creatures to defeat, and an awful lot of running to do."
13:01 Sure, we can imagine Jenny is out saving the world without it being shown on screen,
13:05 but why resurrect such an interesting character if you don't plan to do anything with her?
