00:00:00Played very steady, and he's uplifted this offense their defense may see some problems today, but van Pelt always gives them a chance to win
00:00:08So it's the Patriots and the Bills coming up after a word from your local station
00:00:17And you to the following presentation of the National Football League
00:00:20When Drew Bledsoe was injured, the Patriots and their fans thought the season was over, but out of nowhere emerged Tom Brady, who's been nothing less than spectacular.
00:00:27The Patriots are in the playoff hunt, and have won five of their last six games, with Brady's laser-like passing.
00:00:34The Bills' season has slipped through their fingers. Nothing will stop them.
00:00:41But beating the Patriots and stalling their playoff run will ease a long offseason of rebuilding.
00:00:48AFC East rivals meet for the 84th time.
00:01:11A cold day in western New York as the Patriots meet the Bills.
00:01:24At the start of week 14, the New England playoff chances are very good, but the Bills, two and ten as they may be, are always dangerous.
00:01:32The kickoff is next.
00:01:35Subway presents Fresh Starts, a tribute to the emerging teams and players making the unexpected happen.
00:01:41Subway, eat fresh.
00:01:43Head coach Mike Sherman's Packers are atop the NFC Central after running back Amon Green rushed for 125 yards in a 17-7 victory over the Bears in week 13.
00:01:54The Patriots are making a postseason surge behind the running of Antoine Smith, who scored two touchdowns in a 27-16 win over the Browns.
00:02:04AFC East rivals the Patriots under Bill Belichick after that one-and-three start.
00:02:10Some people calling for maybe Belichick to be fired, according to owner Bob Kraft, but now he could be a leading contender for coach of the year.
00:02:18That's right, Don, and there's Greg Williams, the new head coach of the Buffalo Bills.
00:02:21Struggling through his first season as head coach here.
00:02:24Came in with high expectations, but salary cap problems have forced him to let some players go that right now Greg Williams wishes he had back.
00:02:33There's Adam Venateri, ready to kick off.
00:02:36One problem for the Patriots, they have given up kick return yards.
00:02:39Venateri hits a high-spinning kick that'll carry short.
00:02:42Coming down with the ball is Sean Bryson, a big bat from Tennessee, and he breaks it across the 30-yard line and gets to the 31.
00:02:5116-yard return on the play as we look at Alex Van Pelt.
00:02:56In his ninth year in the NFL out of Pittsburgh, broke a lot of Dan Marino's passing records at the University of Pittsburgh,
00:03:02and has a quarterback rating as a starter for the Bills of over 80.
00:03:06He's been a steadying influence, Don, and I think more so than anything, he's more well-versed in this West Coast offense, and he gets rid of the ball on time.
00:03:15Yeah, he makes quick drops, makes quick decisions, and that's the reason he's been more effective moving the team.
00:03:22So the Bills go just across their 30-yard line.
00:03:30Takes the pitch, makes the throw, a drop ball at the 43-yard line to his best receiver, Eric Moulds,
00:03:37who in the first meeting against the Patriots, Moulds was held at three catches for just seven yards.
00:03:43We look at the Bills' offensive front, Feenan Brown on the left side, the veterans.
00:03:47Now, Strowski's been a big help since he's come back.
00:03:49Yeah, his presence has really solidified the offensive line in the last three weeks.
00:03:53Travis Henry, a rookie runner from Tennessee, is coming off a 100-yard rushing game in the win over Carolina last week.
00:04:00On 2nd and 10, Mantell hands off to Travis Henry, and he tries the Patriot defense on his right side.
00:04:07And the Patriots, who give up yards grudgingly, Cleveland got only 51 yards rushing against them last week.
00:04:13The stop made by rookie Richard Seymour, the number one draft choice, who's playing very well.
00:04:19The whole defense is playing well.
00:04:21Bruschi has moved to the middle because of the injury to Ted Johnson.
00:04:24Rabel and Pfeiffer, two veterans, have been terrific on the outside.
00:04:28To Bucky Jones, going at free safety, he intercepted the first pass of Tim Couch last week.
00:04:33That's Romeo Cronell, the defensive coordinator. He coaches a very physical defense.
00:04:38If you lose to the Patriots, it may well count, too, because you'll be hurt next week as well.
00:04:42A lot of teams have been losing the next week after they play the Patriots.
00:04:45They're beat up. Here's a throw and a tip ball.
00:04:47As getting a hand on the ball was Mike Rabel, a former All-American defensive end at Ohio State,
00:04:53who came in here as a free agent to New England.
00:04:55He's intercepted two this year, and he also has three sacks.
00:04:59He's been a very sound influence on the left outside.
00:05:02One of the things about this Patriot team is they've got a lot of veteran backups.
00:05:06The guys came in, signed one-year deals.
00:05:08They're guys Belichick knows, like Brian Cox, David Patton, guys like that,
00:05:12and it has really made a difference for this Patriot team.
00:05:15Now the Bills three and out, so they punt the ball.
00:05:19Troy Brown and Kevin Faulk are back.
00:05:21Troy Brown, the leading punt returner in the American Conference.
00:05:25It's Faulk, though, who's going to field it back at the 14-yard line.
00:05:29And a very strong special teams play by Reggie Germany, a rookie from Ohio State, number 84.
00:05:37A 51-yard punt by Moorman and no return.
00:05:42There is Tom Brady, one of the great new stories in the NFL.
00:05:47Threw all of three passes last season as a rookie,
00:05:49and now he's one of the leading passers in the NFL.
00:05:52I think the amazing thing, Don, has been his consistency.
00:05:54So many times a young guy will come in, he'll be great one week and bad the next.
00:05:58Not this guy.
00:05:59He's been consistently good ever since he took his first snap.
00:06:038-3 as a starter after Drew Bledsoe was hurt.
00:06:06Here's Brady, handoff, and the former Bill Antwon Smith slams it right at his former teammates.
00:06:12Stopped by linebacker Jay Foreman.
00:06:15As we look at the offensive blockers for the Patriots, a rookie at left tackle and flight,
00:06:21Compton, Woody, Andrewsie, and Robinson Randall.
00:06:24Keep an eye on Damian Woody. He dominated in the last meeting between these two teams.
00:06:28Troy Brown and David Patton, the wideouts.
00:06:30Not much production from the tight end from a pass-catching standpoint.
00:06:33And there's the guy. He absolutely is key to their running game today,
00:06:37and it's important in the cold weather.
00:06:39Woody, the third-year center out of Boston College.
00:06:42Pitch back on second down, and look at Antwon Smith running with a vengeance
00:06:46as he takes it across the 30.
00:06:48As we look at the Bills now on defense after a nine-yard run by Smith.
00:06:53Hanson's a veteran, but not much experience after that.
00:06:56Yeah, Ron Edwards makes his first start as a professional today.
00:06:59A rookie starts at middle, linebacker Brandon Spoon.
00:07:03In for Sam Coward, who they lost in the opening day this year.
00:07:06Rookie Nate Clements on the right side. Their number-one pick is dangerous.
00:07:10He scored two touchdowns, one on a punt return,
00:07:13one on an interception return of Peyton Manning.
00:07:16First down, Patriots.
00:07:19Brady, timing throw, makes the connection, and bringing it down is Terry Glenn,
00:07:26who, number 88, Tom Brady telling us yesterday, Steve,
00:07:30that the whole pass offense changed when Terry Glenn's in there.
00:07:33Well, that's an understatement, not just for the Patriots.
00:07:36It changes for a defense who's trying to play this team.
00:07:39All of a sudden, they've got three good wideouts,
00:07:41and you'd better have three good cornerbacks to match up.
00:07:44I don't know if the Buffalo Bills do that, do have three good cornerbacks.
00:07:48Terry Glenn really changes the dynamics of this game.
00:07:52Glenn has caught 11 passes, but he's only played in two games, including last week.
00:07:58Glenn has the ball very close to a first down.
00:08:00Well, that's a testament. Yeah, that's a testament to his abilities.
00:08:03I mean, even though he hasn't played much,
00:08:05the threat of Terry Glenn being in the game plan is a huge headache for defensive coordinators.
00:08:11Remarkable speed and quickness.
00:08:13Somebody says, Steve, he could get separation from a defensive back in a phone booth.
00:08:18Tough to cover. Terry Glenn, who can be great when he's in the lineup.
00:08:22A troubled season for him, and now the handoff goes to Antwon Smith again,
00:08:27and he's across the 45-yard line as the Patriot offensive line is winning the early battle in the trenches.
00:08:35You see here Antwon Smith, who was a Buffalo Bill during 97 for 840.
00:08:40Then he had a big year in 1998, and then as his yards decreased, he was injured through most of that.
00:08:45Had foot problems, ankle problems, and got in the doghouse with an offensive coordinator
00:08:49during a struggling year for this team.
00:08:52Found a home in New England and has thrived.
00:08:55Boy, he was a happy guy when we talked to him yesterday.
00:08:59How could you not be?
00:09:00The go-to guy, and he has delivered the goods.
00:09:03Pitch back, Smith, and he breaks it again and gets out to midfield on a second down and sixth run.
00:09:09He is ahead before he's brought down by the rookie, Ron Edwards, number 98.
00:09:14The game plan pretty basic right now for the Patriots.
00:09:17Pounded at him.
00:09:18The offensive line of the Patriots right now, Steve, much better than that young defensive front of the Bills.
00:09:23Well, the Bills, because of injuries, are starting two rookies, and Phil Hansen has 144 starts himself.
00:09:29The rest of those guys have six, and you've got to think that the Patriots like that matchup.
00:09:33If they can't beat them with physical ability, certainly they can beat them with experience.
00:09:38And that running of Smith is going to set up the passing game very soon, because the Bills have to play run.
00:09:44Antoine Smith, four carries, 19 yards, now a swing pass.
00:09:48Kevin Faulk dives ahead on a third down.
00:09:51Did he get there?
00:09:53It's going to depend on the spot.
00:09:54It's going to be very close.
00:09:55The official gave not a very good spot by the official.
00:09:58I thought he got much more yardage than they're giving him on that.
00:10:02And he did not make the first down.
00:10:05That surprises me.
00:10:06The rookie, Nate Clements, was on the stop.
00:10:09This is Kevin Faulk going out to the right of your screen.
00:10:12Just got to get to about the 40.
00:10:14Yeah, he did.
00:10:15He slid forward, came up shy about a half a yard.
00:10:20Now Ken Walter, number 13 in the punt.
00:10:22Been a very effective punter since he's come in.
00:10:25A 37-plus on the net yardage.
00:10:29NFL leader.
00:10:32Hits the ball high.
00:10:35Bills won't touch it.
00:10:36Makes a big patriot hop all the way down inside the five-yard line.
00:10:41I've seen that before, Don.
00:10:42You'll usually see on the end of the guys that covered it.
00:10:47In the bad weather, the punter's best friend is the bounce.
00:10:54Back to Ralph Wilson Stadium.
00:10:56Had a cold day.
00:10:57Chill factors at this point.
00:10:5930 degrees and dropping.
00:11:01After a 46-yard punt with no return, the Bills start deep in their own end.
00:11:07Travis Henry.
00:11:08Once again, gets out to the five-yard line.
00:11:13A moment ago, you saw this field position take place because of a bounce.
00:11:17This ball came end over end, tumbling out of the sky and bounced right towards the end zone.
00:11:22You see there, that is a huge swing in field position.
00:11:27And that's what happens on a cold day, Don.
00:11:30Sometimes a punt returner, let alone is afraid to field the ball because of the wind,
00:11:34it's also more difficult and in a hard surface like turf,
00:11:37you're always going to get a good bounce on a punt.
00:11:39Well, the punt returner, Peerless Price, he didn't want any part of the ball.
00:11:42He backed off it.
00:11:45And the Bills up against it now.
00:11:47This aggressive, swarming, patriot defense again attacks the ball.
00:11:50Bruschi, the middle backer, is there.
00:11:54With Steve Tasker, our broadcast partner, rushing it in for the Bills.
00:11:58Well, England's Sean McCarthy on hold of the 93-yard punt,
00:12:01which is the longest in Patriots history and the third longest punt in NFL history.
00:12:07Steve, you should have got there a little faster.
00:12:09Yeah, I'll tell you what, look at this roll.
00:12:11That's like a 35-yard roll that's going to keep going.
00:12:14That's a nightmare.
00:12:16That's why this series is always so close, Don.
00:12:18These teams beat each other up and nobody can get an edge.
00:12:23A history of close game between the Bills and the Patriots.
00:12:27Third down now, and the Bills need seven.
00:12:29Van Pelt stands in, makes a throw, and it's incomplete.
00:12:33And the Bills will have to punt the ball from their end zone.
00:12:36A big rush by Teddy Bruschi.
00:12:39Yeah, the Patriots got good pressure,
00:12:41and also Jay Reimers slipped and fell down coming out of his route.
00:12:45That play had no chance.
00:12:47We'll see if Buffalo can exchange field position,
00:12:50but right now the Patriots are getting the best of a field position.
00:12:53Troy Brown standing right at midfield to receive the punt.
00:12:58Troy Brown is back.
00:12:59He broke an 85-yarder for a touchdown,
00:13:01and here is the booming punt downfield.
00:13:04Brown backpedaling to his 35.
00:13:0845.
00:13:09And he gives the Patriots excellent field position,
00:13:12averaging 14 yards of punt return.
00:13:15Chris Watson was on the tackle, a 58-yard punt.
00:13:19NFL on CBS is sponsored by Southwest Airlines,
00:13:24proud sponsor of the NFL and official airline of Super Bowl XXXVI,
00:13:29Cadillac, the fusion of design and technology,
00:13:33and by the Travel Industry Association of America.
00:13:41The beautiful panorama of the Niagara River and the gorge
00:13:44and the Niagara Falls, about 25 miles away from Orchard Park.
00:13:48As Brady hands up, again they go to Antoine Smith.
00:13:51And Smith, who was an 1,100-yard rusher with the Bills,
00:13:55before they stopped giving him the ball.
00:13:57That was back in 98.
00:13:58Breaks another good game before Brandon Spoon makes the stop.
00:14:01There's a big overmatch here, Steve.
00:14:03You're right, and as long as Tom Brady can hand the ball off to Antoine Smith,
00:14:07Brady's going to have a very easy day at the office.
00:14:11Very productive day earlier.
00:14:13Antoine Smith has run the ball five times and already has 25 yards.
00:14:21Or Antoine Smith, or plus yards as he drives close to a first down.
00:14:26It'll bring up third and less than a yard.
00:14:28On the sideline, Drew Bledsoe, awaiting his turn, coming off the injury.
00:14:34Said the best quarterback's going to play,
00:14:36and if I get my chance in the summer, I expect to be the best quarterback.
00:14:39That's exactly right, Nate.
00:14:40Bledsoe said, you know, he gave Brady the same advice his dad gave him.
00:14:43Hey, throw it to our guys, not to theirs.
00:14:45You can make this game as complicated as you want, Don.
00:14:48It'll never be rocket science.
00:14:51He threw it to the right guys an awful lot in his time, Drew Bledsoe.
00:14:54In his time, that's a long way to go.
00:14:55Only in his ninth year, recently turned 30.
00:15:00This quarterback situation is a tribute to both these guys.
00:15:03They handled it as well as anybody possibly could have.
00:15:05They have. They've remained good friends through it all.
00:15:07Now they get to the up back, the full back,
00:15:09and Mark Edwards cracks the Bills defensive front.
00:15:12He gets a first down for New England.
00:15:15Newman on the tackle.
00:15:16You never like to see that as a defense, Don.
00:15:19Three straight runs and a first down.
00:15:22If you can't stop the run on three straight downs to give up a first down,
00:15:27you're in deep trouble.
00:15:28And this Buffalo Bills defense has got a lot of young players playing on it,
00:15:33but this is a time when, at this point in the season,
00:15:36they're 2-10.
00:15:37These guys have got to step up and play,
00:15:39or they're not going to be a Buffalo Bill next year.
00:15:42Well, the rushing yards certainly indicate the way the Patriots have controlled
00:15:45this scoreless game so far.
00:15:50Again they go, and now a play to fake,
00:15:52and they get the ball to Troy Brown,
00:15:54and he's now done with an array of blockers in front of him.
00:15:57Troy Brown putting on moves and he's times ahead,
00:16:00down to the 30-yard line.
00:16:03An eight-yard gain on the play.
00:16:05You don't mind running a play like that with Troy Brown,
00:16:07because if it's sniffed out, which it is here by the Buffalo Bills,
00:16:10watch.
00:16:12Keon Carpenter backs out and he sniffs it out and runs and covers the receiver,
00:16:16but Troy Brown, being a great kick returner,
00:16:18all of a sudden it's a little picket fence off to the left side,
00:16:21and he picks up almost enough for a first down.
00:16:24That's why you don't mind trying those trick plays with a guy like Troy Brown.
00:16:27He'll make something out of nothing.
00:16:30Got him twice, the offensive coordinator.
00:16:33He's been going to that bag of tricks off and forth, New England.
00:16:36Another Antoine Smith run, and this power runner,
00:16:39a real hammer, a straight-line runner,
00:16:42takes it inside the 25-yard line
00:16:44before the rookie, Ron Edwards, gets him down.
00:16:46We spoke to Antoine yesterday and we said,
00:16:48because you stand next to him, the first thing you notice is he is a big guy
00:16:52for a running back, and we asked him what he weighed.
00:16:54He goes, 230, but I'm going out to dinner.
00:16:58He's going to get all of it.
00:16:59He'll be 235 after a good sit-down dinner.
00:17:03In the first meeting on November 11th,
00:17:05won by the Patriots at Foxborough 21-11,
00:17:08the Bills sacked Tom Brady seven times.
00:17:11Today, they're going to the run.
00:17:13Nine runs and two passes so far for New England.
00:17:16Now Brady looking deep.
00:17:17Long ball. Coverage is good. Incomplete.
00:17:22Coming out of the backfield was the fullback, Mark Edwards,
00:17:25who has 22 catches this year.
00:17:30And one of the things about this play is
00:17:32Tom Brady had a lot of time to throw the football
00:17:34and he's got his fullback matched up on a safety.
00:17:39And that's a match-up that the Buffalo Bills will take,
00:17:42even given the fact that they've been decimated.
00:17:46You see there, Keith Newman and also Rayon Hill
00:17:50back there to cover that play.
00:17:51They'll take that match-up with the Buffalo Bills.
00:17:56Second down and ten now as they go right back to Ann Ploschka.
00:17:59This time, he runs into a wall and it's knocked back
00:18:02in the 23-yard line.
00:18:04Log on to NFL.com as Vic Carucci breaks down
00:18:07the Packers offense and the approach they've been using
00:18:10and how it resulted in their position atop the NFC Central.
00:18:13Just go to NFL.com or America Online, keyword NFL.com.
00:18:19This is the fun part of the year, Don.
00:18:21You get teams that are making the rush to the playoffs.
00:18:23You see teams like the Patriots coming together
00:18:26and really starting to play well.
00:18:28And that, believe me, Don, all through your career,
00:18:31it's funnest when you're getting better.
00:18:33Well, you were part of those Bills teams.
00:18:34They went to four straight Super Bowls
00:18:36and this is where the good teams really emerge.
00:18:39The games get bigger and here's Brady going to the end zone.
00:18:42Again, the coverage is good.
00:18:45Looking deep, Chris Watson running stride for stride
00:18:48with a very fast David Patton.
00:18:50That's Watson, number 21.
00:18:52That's Greg Williams.
00:18:54He was the defensive coordinator with Tennessee
00:18:57before he came in as head coach here.
00:18:59Look here, they're coming in.
00:19:00Great protection for Tom Brady.
00:19:02He has all the time in the world to step up in the pocket.
00:19:04You see how he can see the whole field right in front of him.
00:19:07Plenty of time to find his receiver.
00:19:09It was well covered, but that's going to pay dividends later.
00:19:12Adam Venateri opened the scoring last week
00:19:15against the Browns with a 54-yarder.
00:19:17This is a 40-yarder and it's right down the pipe.
00:19:21A very consistent, outstanding kicker.
00:19:23Adam Venateri puts the Patriots on top, 3-0.
00:19:28Ready to kick off.
00:19:32Venateri hits a high spinning kick again.
00:19:35John Bryson again from the 16-yard line.
00:19:38Breaks it.
00:19:39Not done as he crosses the 40 and gets all the way out to the 45
00:19:43and then a marker's fired in
00:19:45and a blocking foul will be called against the Bills.
00:19:4831-yard return.
00:19:50That's going to come back quite a ways.
00:19:54This was a holding call just at the 30-yard line.
00:19:57Mike Carey is the referee.
00:19:59During the return, holding by the receiving team number 88.
00:20:0410 yards.
00:20:05First down.
00:20:07Sheldon Jackson, a tight end.
00:20:10Illegal block.
00:20:12Here's the penalty right, right there.
00:20:18Had a borderline.
00:20:22NFL on CBS.

00:20:40Elvis, or a reasonable facsimile thereof, is in the building.
00:20:44I'm glad to see you got the tickets I left for him.
00:20:47Coach Glantz.
00:20:48Learned that from Jerry.
00:20:51And there's a graphic for you.
00:20:52The time of possession's been a killer already.
00:20:54And first down.
00:20:56Van Pelt takes a drop.
00:20:58Nearside timing throw.
00:20:59It's a connection to Mould.
00:21:01And he dives ahead across the 25.
00:21:04That's one of the things the Bills need to do right now.
00:21:06They've had two series already with one, two, three and out.
00:21:09They need to get some first downs and give their defense a break.
00:21:12And it's up to that guy right there, Alex Van Pelt, to do it.
00:21:15Van Pelt, a career backup in his seventh year with the Bills.
00:21:18As mentioned earlier, he broke a lot of Dan Marino's passing records.
00:21:22At the University of Pittsburgh.
00:21:24He's a very smart quarterback.
00:21:26They call him Pill, short for Pillsbury Doughboy.
00:21:29And he's a guy that can get it right in short drops.
00:21:32Now he goes to the run.
00:21:33And Travis Henry, the rookie, gets a first down.
00:21:37And down to the 35-yard line.
00:21:41Back down by Ty Law.
00:21:43A seven-yard game, though, by hard-running Travis Henry.
00:21:50You see here, this is all Travis Henry.
00:21:52He'll bang it up into the line on the right side.
00:21:54It ends up coming all the way back to the left.
00:21:56One missed tackle right there inside.
00:21:58And that's sometimes all it takes is the pursuit has to gather itself to get back to the outside.
00:22:03Travis Henry's learning a lot about running in the NFL.
00:22:06He's doing it behind a patchwork offensive line in his first year.
00:22:10Travis Henry comes in with 675 yards rushing.
00:22:14Pills trying to answer the field goal drive.
00:22:17Now Henry running wide.
00:22:19Ridden out of bounds by Roman Pfeiffer, another veteran playing standout football.
00:22:25Tonight on 60 Minutes, if the phone company can call you whenever they want,
00:22:29try calling them and see how far you get.
00:22:31It's tonight on 60 Minutes.
00:22:34Roman Pfeiffer, another one of those veteran free agents who came over.
00:22:39Belichick had a relationship with him.
00:22:41He was with the Jets.
00:22:43And has been a huge—had a huge impact on this team on and off the field.
00:22:47Yeah, Belichick told us yesterday, we brought in guys who love football.
00:22:51We graduated the guys who didn't.
00:22:53They're not here anymore.
00:22:54A pitch back.
00:22:56Henry looks for a block and gets one.
00:22:58And Travis Henry, a patient runner, makes good use of a lead blocker.
00:23:02Finally, Loyer-Malloy bangs him out of bounds.
00:23:07Bengals and the Jets doing battle in the Meadowlands.
00:23:09Here's Jim Nance.
00:23:11Thank you, Don.
00:23:12I know all the Jet fans and Patriot fans watch each other closely.
00:23:15Look at this.
00:23:16The Jets give up a 12-minute drive.
00:23:19It took 20 plays to get to the end zone.
00:23:21Corey Dill in the final yard.
00:23:227-0 Bengals at the end of the first quarter.
00:23:24Go back to Don and Steve.
00:23:26Thank you, Jim.
00:23:27A big development for Cincinnati.
00:23:30They wanted to look at Kelly Smith, possibly to trade him.
00:23:32It's really a showcase as much as it is for them to find out more about him.
00:23:36The high draft choice.
00:23:38How about that drive?
00:23:39That's got to be their longest in a couple of years.
00:23:41Van Pelt going deep.
00:23:43He's got a guy.
00:23:44Phillip Price.
00:23:45He tops the ball at the 7-yard line.
00:23:50Alex Van Pelt took a huge shot just as he let that go from Anthony Pleasant.
00:23:56But he put enough on at this ball.
00:23:58I think it has a chance.
00:23:59Watch as he drops back.
00:24:00Pleasant coming off the right side.
00:24:02Beats John Fina.
00:24:03And bang!
00:24:04Just as he lets it go.
00:24:05Takes a huge hit.
00:24:06Perilous Price has got to catch this ball.
00:24:12Perilous Price fined $30,000 a few weeks ago for a late hit after the game.
00:24:17And here's the hit on Phill.
00:24:19Perilous Price trying to keep it on track, getting back into this game.
00:24:22But Alex Van Pelt won't be standing on his feet very much longer if that continues.
00:24:27Brings up second down and 10.
00:24:28Van Pelt ready to throw again.
00:24:30Nearside throw.
00:24:31And Grable kicked it.
00:24:32Then it's picked up and caught by Jay Remesma, the shorthanded tight end.
00:24:37And Remesma, with his 38th catch of the year, is ahead for a gain of 5 yards.
00:24:45Jay Remesma, the guy who's been in and out of production for the season.
00:24:50I mean, he's been up and down along with this offense.
00:24:53He's usually a target.
00:24:54You see him catching this, sticking with that tipped ball.
00:24:57He's usually a guy that they'll go to in the red area.
00:25:01But in this play, getting it outside, catching it, that's tough to do.
00:25:05Catching a ball that's been tipped is really, really difficult.
00:25:08The old tipped ball drill, they made it work.
00:25:10And the Bills now in long field goal range with the third down coming up.
00:25:14They need five.
00:25:16Van Pelt standing in.
00:25:17He gets time, makes a throw.
00:25:18Excellent coverage.
00:25:21There's going to be a foul call against the Patriots.
00:25:24And an automatic first down for the Bills on defensive pass interference.
00:25:29Somebody got there early.
00:25:30It looked like Ty Law played that.
00:25:32Defense, number 24.
00:25:35Grabbed his jersey.
00:25:37Foul.
00:25:38First down.
00:25:39I didn't see that down.
00:25:40We'll have to see this.
00:25:41This is Eric Moles working as Ty Law.
00:25:43Two really good players.
00:25:44Oh, you see there, he grabbed him to keep his position.
00:25:47Might not have made that play had he not used Moles' jersey to hold him
00:25:51and get the stop.
00:25:52Ty Law's a guy that really is effective against Derek Molden,
00:25:55has been in the past.
00:25:56Natural shutdown corner, Ty Law.
00:26:00Mentioned earlier that Moles only had three catches for a total of seven yards
00:26:04against the Patriots in November at Foxboro.
00:26:06But Greg Williams telling us yesterday that he was open four times
00:26:10and we never got on the ball.
00:26:12Now a handoff and not much happening for Travis Henry as Bobby Hamilton,
00:26:16number 91, who leads the team, the Patriots, with six sacks, makes the stop.
00:26:22And that's about going to do it for the first quarter of play.
00:26:25As the Bills are driving, the Patriots are leading here at Ralph Wilson Stadium.
00:26:31The 84th meeting between these rivals in the AFC East.
00:26:34You see this quarter tick down.
00:26:35When the wind is high here, sometimes Bill Belichick,
00:26:38if the wind is in your face or against you,
00:26:40you'll take a timeout at the end of the corner, but not in this case.
00:26:43The end of the first quarter with a score of the Patriots 3 and the Bills nothing.
00:26:47We'll return to Ralph Wilson Stadium right after this message.
00:27:02Tom Brady can only sit and wait while the Patriots' defense is on the field.
00:27:07See in the first two drives, Bill's sixth play, seven yards.
00:27:11Now starting to move the ball against the Belichick defense.
00:27:14That'll be important later on to keep the Patriots off the field offensively.
00:27:20Somebody left early, but was he drawn offside?
00:27:22Ramirez-Mo pointing at the defense.
00:27:24That's a good way to stop a driver.
00:27:26Offense, number 75, five yards, still second down.
00:27:31That's been a problem with the Bills.
00:27:33If the defense isn't going to stop your offense, why don't you stop yourself?
00:27:36That's been kind of their modus operandi.
00:27:3995 penalties, look at that, second most in the NFL.
00:27:42That's a 2-10 team, Don.
00:27:44Yep, that's a drive killer, too.
00:27:47Now they have to go second down 15.
00:27:50Handoff, and running into the Patriot defense as they were coming at an all-out pass rush.
00:27:56Big grab is Henry, stopped by Bruschi.
00:27:58Now back to Jim Nance in New York.
00:28:02Well, Don Priestholz leads the NFL in rushing and total yards from scrimmage.
00:28:06Here's another example of the season he's enjoying.
00:28:0912-yard touchdown run.
00:28:10It's 10-0 Kansas City over Denver.
00:28:12Let's go back to Don and Steve.
00:28:14Thank you, Jim.
00:28:15Boy, the Ravens would love to have Priestholz.
00:28:17They let him get away.
00:28:18And he's one of the guys, too.
00:28:19If you sit down and talk with Priestholz, he's a guy you really cheer for.
00:28:23He's putting up Marshall Falk type numbers.
00:28:25He's going to probably go over 2,000 total yards this year.
00:28:29They're down.
00:28:30Long.
00:28:31On the run.
00:28:32And Pelt makes a throw.
00:28:34And the Senators can't get near the ball.
00:28:36They're going to have to rush on.
00:28:38Incomplete pass.
00:28:40Coming up on the Nextel Halftime Report.
00:28:42Join Jim, Mike, Randy, and Jerry for all the scores and highlights.
00:28:46Today, Patriots have taken an early 3-0 lead.
00:28:49And now the Patriot defense, which really plays better than their numbers.
00:28:53They're 24th in the league in overall defense.
00:28:56From yardage allowed.
00:28:57But they're hard to score on of late.
00:28:59Red zone defense.
00:29:00Well, as Bill Belichick says, it's really saved us.
00:29:02They're hard to get in the end zone against.
00:29:04He said defense is all about points.
00:29:06And the Patriots have been very good at that.
00:29:08Very stingy.
00:29:10Moorman.
00:29:11Directionally punting to the left side now.
00:29:15And it'll hit out of bounds inside the 15-yard line.
00:29:20So the Patriots, with Radiant quarterback, go on offense when we come back.
00:29:25The Patriots holding to the 3-0 lead on the Venetary 40-yard field goal.
00:29:30Now starting from deep in their own end inside the 15-yard line.
00:29:34Pitch back.
00:29:35Antoine Smith finds a gap.
00:29:37And gets to about the 17.

00:30:01Steve Garvey using baseball bats as poles.
00:30:05Coming down the hill.
00:30:06As Antoine Smith has been running downhill at the Bills defense.
00:30:11Brady.
00:30:12Plays fake.
00:30:13Buys time.
00:30:14Makes a throw and overshoots.
00:30:15Terry Glenn diving at the ball.
00:30:17Brady not getting much done from the pass offense.
00:30:20And he takes a hard hit.
00:30:21He's been sacked about once every ten times he's dropped this season.
00:30:25Yeah, but he doesn't make many bad decisions.
00:30:27He made one last week on an interception.
00:30:29Trying to get rid of the ball before a sack.
00:30:31This one he has plenty of time to throw it.
00:30:33But does take a nice little double shot there.
00:30:36Aaron Schoble hits him.
00:30:37And he bounces right into Phil Hanson.
00:30:39Terry Glenn can't get out there to get this pass.
00:30:41But you don't see the Patriots in field.
00:30:45You don't see the Patriots in third and long very often.
00:30:48But this is when Tom Brady is going to make the difference for this team.
00:30:53He only had 71 net passing yards against the Bills in November.
00:30:57A deep drop by Brady.
00:30:58Airing it out.
00:30:59And a great catch by a great player.
00:31:02Troy Brown comes up.
00:31:03Takes it across the 40.
00:31:05And gets a head for a first down.
00:31:07So beautifully executed by the great Troy Brown.
00:31:10A 26 yard fingertip grab reception.
00:31:13You can say what you want about quarterbacks coming through at the end of the game.
00:31:16But this is where they make their money.
00:31:18Just convert third downs.
00:31:19You get into a third and seven.
00:31:20Make a throw to an open receiver.
00:31:22And move the change.
00:31:23You know, Don.
00:31:25A lot's been said about now.
00:31:26All of a sudden the Patriots in the playoff run.
00:31:28I'll tell you something.
00:31:29They look like a playoff team.
00:31:31Attention Pro Bowl voters.
00:31:32How about Troy Brown?
00:31:33He's never been there.
00:31:35But he's having an all pro season.
00:31:3886 catches now.
00:31:40Over 1,000 yards.
00:31:42He's the best punt returner in the conference.
00:31:45Long ball.
00:31:46Sprinting for it.
00:31:47Beautifully intercepted.
00:31:48What a play by Watson.
00:31:51Chris Watson is on the run.
00:31:52Blockers for him.
00:31:53He turns it wide.
00:31:54Across the 30.
00:31:55And across the 40.
00:31:57And out to the 42 yard line.
00:31:59In what might be the best defensive play of the Buffalo Bills this season.
00:32:04Terry Glenn should have broken this pass up.
00:32:07And he didn't make the effort.
00:32:08Throw this ball out to his left.
00:32:10To the right side of your screen.
00:32:11Now he probably should not make this throw.
00:32:14Terry Glenn is covered very well.
00:32:17But at this point when Terry Glenn realizes Chris Watson has position.
00:32:21Just tackle him.
00:32:22Do anything you can to keep that interception from happening.
00:32:25Terry Glenn I think maybe because he hasn't played very much.
00:32:28Is out of sync with that.
00:32:31Well Bill Belichick told us yesterday he's not in football shape yet.
00:32:34And he wasn't in that play.
00:32:36As Van Pelt comes out throwing.
00:32:38And he's picked off.
00:32:39And then it's dropped.
00:32:40It is picked off for the moment by Otis Smith.
00:32:43And he drops it.
00:32:44Otis Smith a 12 year cornerback.
00:32:46I talked to Otis yesterday Steve.
00:32:48And asked him what's the key to playing a position like corner for 12 years.
00:32:52He said number one you never get out of shape.
00:32:54And number two you've got to be a student of the game.
00:32:57That's exactly right.
00:32:58You know you're very smart if you've got a guy playing for that long.
00:33:01And I think both these quarterbacks Alex Van Pelt and Tom Brady.
00:33:04Are asking their receivers to make some plays for them.
00:33:07Nobody's done it yet.
00:33:10Second and 10.
00:33:12Travis Henry.
00:33:13Gets room.
00:33:14Makes it across the 50.
00:33:16And there's going to be about two yards short of the first down.
00:33:19Ted Johnson on the field makes the stop.
00:33:21And you think about Tom Brady.
00:33:23He doesn't make very many mistakes.
00:33:24And I think on that one trying to go deep to Terry Glenn.
00:33:26You want to get Glenn involved in the offense.
00:33:29But you've got to ask for a little help as well.
00:33:31Terry Glenn should have made a big effort to keep that ball from being intercepted.
00:33:35You're playing a Bills team that has intercepted fewer footballs than any team in the National Football League.
00:33:41It's only the seventh time they've picked a pass off this year.
00:33:44Yeah that's all.
00:33:45Just seven interceptions for the Bills.
00:33:47But it stops at Patriot Drive.
00:33:50Third down and a long two.
00:33:57Swing pass.
00:33:58Welcome up.
00:33:59Knocked down.
00:34:00Looks like Bobby Hamilton, 91, got a hand on the ball.
00:34:03Well done by the Patriot defenders.
00:34:05And the Bills, despite the interception, now have to kick it right back.
00:34:09He spoke to Alex Van Pelt.
00:34:10He says, we've got to stay out of third and long.
00:34:12Well, you've got a third and two.
00:34:14And then Bobby Hamilton slaps down a pass to Larry Sanders.
00:34:17Which probably would have given you the first down.
00:34:23Mormons standing at his 36-yard line.
00:34:25And there is Troy Brown.
00:34:30High punt.
00:34:32Troy Brown waving everybody off.
00:34:34It takes a hop back up at the Bills and it's down at about the 25-yard line.
00:34:39Short punt but no return.
00:34:4225-yard punt is all.
00:34:46Business at great low prices.
00:34:49Heineken.
00:34:50It's all about the beer.
00:34:52Heineken.
00:34:53And by Nextel.
00:34:55How business gets done.
00:35:01Back to live action.
00:35:03A handoff.
00:35:04Antoine Smith who ran well earlier.
00:35:06Now they're filling the gaps with linebackers.
00:35:08And he's taken down at the 26.
00:35:10Short game.
00:35:14Tonight on the CBS Sunday Movie.
00:35:16Emmy Award winner Patricia Heaton of Everybody Loves Raymond.
00:35:19And Emmy winner Peter Falk starring a magical holiday story for the whole family.
00:35:24Don't miss the world premiere of A Town Without Christmas.
00:35:27Tonight on CBS.
00:35:31So many times when you were playing for the Bills Steve.
00:35:34Orchard Park was a town without pity in December for the opposition.
00:35:39Well the Patriots found a welcoming weather today and also a 2-10 team to greet them.
00:35:44Brady stands in.
00:35:46Makes a high throw.
00:35:47It's incomplete.
00:35:49Looking at David Patton.
00:35:51So Brady's been off target for the most part.
00:35:53He has now hit 3 of 7.
00:35:5638 yards.
00:35:57One interception.
00:35:58Aaron Schoble a rookie pass rusher putting heat on him.
00:36:01Yeah one of the things about it is when the Patriots hand the ball off to Antoine Smith.
00:36:05And he has to move side to side.
00:36:07Tom Brady doesn't look nearly as good.
00:36:11As Drew Bledsoe looks on there.
00:36:13Brady just has to make too many plays.
00:36:15And I think one of the things that's been a benefit for him.
00:36:17Is a good running game.
00:36:19Bills interesting coverages.
00:36:21Deploying a lot of dimes formations.
00:36:23Six defensive backs.
00:36:26And they've had the right receivers well covered.
00:36:30Brady makes a look.
00:36:31Stands in.
00:36:32Makes a throw.
00:36:33And he makes a connection.
00:36:34And again.
00:36:35It is the great Troy Brown.
00:36:37Over the middle for 20 yards.
00:36:39And a 3rd and 10 play.
00:36:40First down New England.
00:36:42You can say what you want about how Brady has been ineffective thus far.
00:36:453 for 7.
00:36:46Well he's made a couple of very sharp 3rd down throws.
00:36:49And you see here the company that Troy Brown keeps in the last 2 years.
00:36:53Troy Brown had 83 receptions as a career high coming into this year.
00:36:57And he's already coming in as 85 receptions.
00:37:00And this is a guy that is doing it big time this year.
00:37:04Every year.
00:37:07Antoine Smith.
00:37:08Right in the middle.
00:37:09Not much there.
00:37:12Troy Brown said the fight never ends for him in the NFL.
00:37:15He was an 8th round draft choice in 93 when Drew Bledsoe was the top pick.
00:37:19Said the fight to make a roster.
00:37:21The fight to get playing time.
00:37:23The fight to keep producing.
00:37:25He's one of those guys that Billichick got that loves football.
00:37:28I mean, Billichick graduated, as you said, a bunch of guys who maybe football wasn't on their top of their priority list.
00:37:34He's got a bunch of guys who love it now.
00:37:36And you can tell.
00:37:38There's something else he's got, Steve.
00:37:39He's got an arm like a quarterback.
00:37:41He can really throw a ball.
00:37:45Bad play.
00:37:46But it might turn into something.
00:37:47No, it turns into lost yardage as Brady was looking for somebody to appear to hand off to.
00:37:52Antoine Smith was going the other way.
00:37:54That was a broken play.
00:37:55Brady, he flipped that ball forward to Antoine Smith.
00:37:58He thought he was going to hand it off.
00:37:59Antoine Smith thought he was going to pitch it after the snap.
00:38:02Brady turns around to hand it off.
00:38:03He's not there.
00:38:04He says, why don't you take it?
00:38:06That's like the little game, you know.
00:38:09You don't like a guy throwing to him in a crowd.
00:38:12Brady's smart enough to know that you don't want to be holding the ball back there when the play goes out.
00:38:18Patriots have done well in the second quarter.
00:38:20Outscoring opponents 1-10 to 45 before today.
00:38:24No points so far today in the second quarter.
00:38:27The penitentiary field goal the only points.
00:38:29Now a whistle blows and flags fly a fraction before the snap.
00:38:34We talked to a lot of head coaches around the National Football League, Don.
00:38:38Fall start.
00:38:39Offense.
00:38:40Number 65.
00:38:41Five yards.
00:38:42Remains.
00:38:43Third down.
00:38:44And when you ask them about the guys that are toughest to coach against,
00:38:46and the guys they have the most respect for,
00:38:48the guy at the top of the list is always Bill Belichick.
00:38:51You see there.
00:38:52Right there's the infraction.
00:38:55But Belichick has got a way of putting a team on the football field that is solid.
00:39:00Aside from the play you just saw, they're usually mistake-free and they're very physical.
00:39:05I'll tell you what, Don.
00:39:06Those are three important aspects of an NFL team.
00:39:09Very important.
00:39:10And right now this is an important down.
00:39:11Another third and a long yardage.
00:39:13But if Troy Brown, he's looking that way.
00:39:15Brady pump faking.
00:39:16Now he dumps up on a screen.
00:39:18Patrick passes on the run.
00:39:20And pass.
00:39:21With a full 360.
00:39:23Full gainer out to the 49.
00:39:25A gain of 13 yards but well short of the first down.
00:39:29Tackled by Antoine Winfield out there.
00:39:31That was a screen that looked like it was going to go for a while.
00:39:33Very good call.
00:39:34An easy pass play to complete.
00:39:36You send Troy Brown and the rest of the receivers one way.
00:39:38Brady, nice pump fake to get the defense into position to be blocked.
00:39:43And here comes the screen pass the other way.
00:39:46Patrick pass.
00:39:47Getting up.
00:39:48Winfield taking his legs out.
00:39:50Big Joe Andrews.
00:39:52He was out in front.
00:39:53He can clean some people out.
00:39:54But they only got 13.
00:39:55Needed 20.
00:39:56Again, the pump.
00:39:58Ball is hit high by Walter.
00:40:04And the Bills let it hop and it will be down at about the 10-yard line.
00:40:07So, again, good special teams play.
00:40:09Matt Shadham, 58, downing it.
00:40:10A 40-yard punt.
00:40:12Had no return.
00:40:19The Dolphins and the Patriots.
00:40:20Won't that be a good one?
00:40:21Next Saturday at 1.30 on CBS from Foxborough.
00:40:27Right now the Bills have the ball.
00:40:29First down and 10.
00:40:30Bill Belichick telling us yesterday the number one takeaway that they wanted was
00:40:33take away Travis Henry.
00:40:34But he's starting to run really well.
00:40:36But he's now run 10 times for 50 yards.
00:40:42Moyer-Malloy makes the stop.
00:40:44We talked to Bill Belichick and he says in this kind of division up in the
00:40:48northeastern, you're playing Buffalo and New England.
00:40:50You play New York and New York.
00:40:52You've got to have a running game.
00:40:53You've got to have a good defense because both those things can go on the road
00:40:56and help you.
00:40:58And if he goes into the playoffs as a road team, that will spell good things
00:41:02for the Patriots as well.
00:41:07Second down.
00:41:10Leading seven, Van Pelt.
00:41:13Hits back.
00:41:14Back to Henry, the rookie.
00:41:15And Henry dives ahead.
00:41:17Travis Henry out of Tennessee where he last year rushed for 1,300 yards.
00:41:23The all-time record for the Volunteers in the season.
00:41:26Kyle Law gets him down.
00:41:27For the best NFL coverage on the net, including expert analysis and live
00:41:30scoreboards, go to cbs.sportsline.com or America Online keyword CBS Sportsline.
00:41:39Don Crickey with Steve Tasker.
00:41:41Ralph Wilson Stadium, Orchard Park, New York.
00:41:433-0 Patriots as they look for their fourth straight win.
00:41:47Thriving towards the playoffs.
00:41:48Their longtime nemesis, the Bills, struggling at 2 and 10.
00:41:52But right in this game, a venetary field goal in the first quarter from 40 yards
00:41:57out, the only scoring for New England.
00:42:01Van Pelt makes a throw.
00:42:03And it's incomplete.
00:42:05So again, the Bills fail on third down, and they have to putt the ball.
00:42:08The more time that passes, the more series that come up for the Buffalo
00:42:11Bills, and they go 1, 2, 3, and out.
00:42:13The less confidence you see in their offense.
00:42:16You'll see here as Van Pelt comes out, and he just misses Larry Senders.
00:42:21That puts him at 2 for 10, and you cannot win a football game completing
00:42:2520% of your passes.
00:42:27You can't even get it downfield.
00:42:30There's the putt.
00:42:31Hit end over end.
00:42:32The ball will hit.
00:42:33Makes a Bills roll.
00:42:34Picked up by Troy Brown, and he goes out of bounds at about midfield.
00:42:38Brown on the return.
00:42:41The Bills lament.
00:42:42I told them yesterday, we have to stay out of third and long.
00:42:45But they've been in it all day.
00:42:48This Christmas, Method Man.
00:42:50On CBS.
00:42:51Is sponsored by a beautiful mind.
00:42:53Starring Academy Award winner, Russell Crowe, and directed by Ron Howard.
00:42:57And by Best Buy.

00:43:06Next Saturday, one of the great rivalries in college basketball,
00:43:09a board award, Kentucky and Indiana's renewed.
00:43:12Here on the home of the NCAA championship, CBS Sports.
00:43:16For more, go to cbs.sportsline.com.
00:43:19America online keyword, CBS Sportsline.
00:43:22Boggans and Jeffries leading their teams.
00:43:25Kentucky and Indiana.
00:43:28Santa kicking back in the crowd here at Ralph Wilson Stadium.
00:43:31As Brady tries to get it going.
00:43:33Hits back to Antoine Smith.
00:43:35And he finds some room and gets ahead for close to four yards.
00:43:41You think, Don, about a guy coming back to play against his old team
00:43:44like Antoine Smith is doing today.
00:43:46His first visit back to a stadium that he had a lot of success in.
00:43:51Had a lot of good years here.
00:43:53And was a guy that was a positive in the locker room.
00:43:55A lot of people in Buffalo.
00:43:57I think there's some sentiment here in Buffalo that, yeah,
00:44:00the guy did get the raw end of the deal here.
00:44:02He didn't get used very well in a bad offense.
00:44:04But I think they're very happy for his success in New England.
00:44:07He's having it.
00:44:09Right back to the run they go.
00:44:10This time it is Kevin Falk in the backfield.
00:44:12And he runs on second down and six.
00:44:15He runs to across the 45 and down to the 43.
00:44:20Kevin Falk, a great player at LSU and a very versatile player.
00:44:24He's caught 28 passes this year.
00:44:26And he's averaging over four yards a rush.
00:44:28He's a great complement to an Antoine Smith.
00:44:30Kevin Falk has a little wiggle in the hole.
00:44:32He'll make a guy miss in traffic.
00:44:34Antoine Smith will run him over.
00:44:36Both these guys are benefiting from the work of the big guys up front.
00:44:40The offensive line and the Patriots have really come together
00:44:43for a very solid football.
00:44:45Now J.R. Redman's in the backfield.
00:44:47He hasn't gotten much work this year on third down and three.
00:44:52Brady stands in, comes in high, a dangerous throw
00:44:55because Troy Brown was extended into that defense,
00:44:59right into the teeth of the defense.
00:45:00It looked like there was going to be a big collision there with Keon Carpenter.
00:45:04It never took place.
00:45:05Brady puts this ball, if he gets this ball three feet lower,
00:45:08he may have a completion watch here.
00:45:11Well covered by Antoine Smith and the safety Carpenter.
00:45:15Troy Brown making the effort up there in the traffic.
00:45:17He didn't get any alligator arms.
00:45:18I've got to tip my hat to him because there was some collision coming.
00:45:21Yet another punt.
00:45:23Either team can jumpstart its offense.
00:45:28Walter hits it high.
00:45:29Ken Walter.
00:45:30Peerless Price comes up on the ball.
00:45:32I mentioned Steve Peerless, $30,000 lighter after the fine,
00:45:36a late hit after the game at San Francisco.
00:45:39Tomorrow on CBS begins with the King of Queens.
00:45:42Then it's a very merry Monday when Mary Tyler Moore reunites
00:45:45with Ed Asner and Cloris Leachman on the Ellen Show.
00:45:48Followed by all new episodes of Everybody Loves Raymond,
00:45:51Yes Dear, and Family Law.
00:45:53That's all tomorrow here on CBS.
00:45:57Greg Williams walking the sideline, exhorting his team.
00:46:02Tough start for Greg Williams,
00:46:04one in ten before last week's game with Carolina,
00:46:07a one-win team at the time when they came in,
00:46:09and the Panthers led in the first half 24-6.
00:46:13This after a 35-0 loss of the Bills at San Francisco.
00:46:18The wheels had come off, but they'd rallied and won the game.
00:46:20Here's a dump off, and Travis Henry has a block.
00:46:23And Henry works the sideline and somehow finds a gap
00:46:27and gets ahead for a first down.
00:46:29I'll tell you what, that was a pretty good screenplay
00:46:31because it looked like that play was going absolutely nowhere.
00:46:34The pressure was all over Alex Van Pelt.
00:46:37Travis Henry did a good job of faking pass protection
00:46:40and then just stepping out.
00:46:41He got help from Billy Conaty down the sidelines.
00:46:44Watch how he works the sideline after this play develops.
00:46:47Watch, he comes in and bang, right there,
00:46:49he kind of takes Richard Seymour on, then moves out to the flat,
00:46:52follows Billy Conaty and gets right on the sideline,
00:46:54gets the extra five yards before the big hit on the sideline.
00:46:59And the Bills get a first down.
00:47:00They've not had many as the ball is now to the 29-yard line.
00:47:05Travis Henry again, a hard-working back.
00:47:08Players really like Travis Henry, his teammates.
00:47:12It's worth that ethic.
00:47:14Yeah, you can see that the offensive line is having a little trouble there.
00:47:17Travis Henry's going to stay down right here.
00:47:19You can see the offensive line was getting a little bit manhandled there
00:47:22because Henry went in there and had nowhere to run.
00:47:24He was kind of looking for a crease to open up and there was none.
00:47:28Henry's been the most productive part of this Bills offense today,
00:47:31but now down and holding his right knee.
00:47:34He has his run today 12 times for 54 yards.
00:47:38Then got that swing pass on the last play for 13 yards and a first down.
00:47:43But now, tough development for the Bills and Travis Henry.
00:47:48Here's the offensive line.
00:47:49There's just nowhere for him to run.
00:47:50He's right there.
00:47:51He's going to try and get through.
00:47:53Big hit right in the face.
00:47:55And then as the traffic catches up, we'll see if he gets rolled over.
00:48:01Steve, what about this playing field now?
00:48:03As mentioned earlier, this is the first time the Patriots played
00:48:06on an artificial turf surface outdoors this year.
00:48:10How does that affect playing a team coming off grass?
00:48:13Well, the first thing you notice is when you're walking around how hard it is,
00:48:16and plus the fact that it's such a grippy subject.
00:48:19You don't have to worry at all about whether you're going to make a cut
00:48:22and slip and fall down.
00:48:23That is completely taken out of your mind frame.
00:48:25So these guys will ask their bodies to do a lot today
00:48:27that they wouldn't normally do on grass.
00:48:31Travis up.
00:48:32Limping off.
00:48:33And looks to be okay.
00:48:35And Sean Bryson will come in.
00:48:37Another Tennessee back.
00:48:40He's been a very productive guy.
00:48:41Look at 67 yards.
00:48:44Coming off a 100-yard rushing day.
00:48:48He was the Bills' second-round draft choice.
00:48:51And he has been a very productive player.
00:48:53A lot of speculation here, Steve.
00:48:54I was talking to Tom Donahoe, who now runs the Bills franchise,
00:48:58that they might trade down.
00:49:00They don't even have a very high pick, obviously, from their record.
00:49:03Yeah, it's his philosophy that there's usually not a guy worthy of a first pick
00:49:06of the draft or a top five pick that will change right away.
00:49:09Plus there's a lot of pressure for a young player to come in like that.
00:49:11So the Bills may trade down to get more picks.
00:49:15The other thing is they all want $40 million.
00:49:17It blows a hole in your salary cap.
00:49:19Here's Bryson running hard.
00:49:21And he gets to the 35-yard line.
00:49:24Sean Bryson is another guy that went to Tennessee just like Travis Henry did.
00:49:28He's got very good speed.
00:49:30Lost his entire rookie season with a knee injury, but he's back.
00:49:33You can see there at 6'1", 233.
00:49:35He came into the league from Tennessee along with Peerless Price.
00:49:38And they asked him, who's faster, you or Peerless?
00:49:40And he says, I'll beat Peerless.
00:49:42They asked Peerless.
00:49:44Peerless said, he might.
00:49:46They never got down and ran him, though.
00:49:47No, he's very fast.
00:49:49Talking about the draft, Jimmy Johnson once said, talking to him about it,
00:49:52he said, drafting to him is like having a fishing net.
00:49:56The bigger the net, the more fish you're going to get.
00:49:58That's why you trade to get more draft choices.
00:50:01Here's a throw and an over-the-middle throw.
00:50:04Ramirez was running an out pattern, so a total misconnection there.
00:50:07And, again, the Bills find themselves unable to convert on third down.
00:50:12And they haven't been too bad on first and second.
00:50:14They've been third and five, third and four, third and two,
00:50:17and they still haven't been able to convert.
00:50:19That's a sign of a good defense, Don.
00:50:21Throw off the timing routes, get in the quarterback space, and shut down the run.
00:50:25You can't ask much more than that.
00:50:26That's what Belichick said.
00:50:27Number two, takeaways.
00:50:28He always is good at taking things away.
00:50:30Takeaway Travis Henry.
00:50:32They've not done that.
00:50:33Number two, disrupt the timing of the passing game.
00:50:36Troy Brown fields the punt inside his 25,
00:50:39and Brown gets all the way out to the 35-yard line.
00:50:4542-yard punt and a 12-yard return, tackled by Lance Brown.
00:50:49Tuesday on CBS, the boy's father murdered his mother and was set free.
00:50:54Now he wants his son back,
00:50:56and attorney Nick Fallon will face his most personal custody battle.
00:51:00Don't miss an all-new Guardian Tuesday on CBS.
00:51:08Travis Henry looking a little better on the sideline, walking it off.
00:51:12He got his knee bent to the inside as he was under that pile.
00:51:17I'll tell you what, when momentum starts to shift on that weight when you're under a pile,
00:51:22there's nothing you can do about it.
00:51:23Not only does it hurt, it's mentally disturbing.
00:51:28That's disturbing for the Bills not to have him in there,
00:51:30but right now it's Brady and the Patriots on offense.
00:51:34A lot of time.
00:51:35Long ball again.
00:51:36The coverage is there.
00:51:38And it skips off the hand of David Patton running a fly pattern.
00:51:43Certainly couldn't be any question when Brady came out of Michigan about his arm.
00:51:46He's got a long-distance arm.
00:51:47Yeah, and that ball was pretty well thrown, too.
00:51:49That's hard to do.
00:51:50He'll throw this ball about 35 yards right down the seam, right on the numbers.
00:51:54This is where the receiver is going to try and catch this ball,
00:51:57right between two defenders and just off the fingertips.
00:52:02It wasn't a completion, but I'll tell you what, you're not too unhappy with that throw.
00:52:07Now the rookie runner, the starter for the Bills, who had over 60 total yards
00:52:11while he was in there before getting injured, is going off the field.
00:52:16We have 2.38 to go, as you see, before halftime.
00:52:19Pitch back on second and ten.
00:52:22Kevin Falk fights his way ahead, short of the first down.
00:52:26He'll bring up third and about three, as Pearson Priolo brings him down.
00:52:31What a good running game the Patriots have.
00:52:35With Falk coming out on the outside on the pitch, cutting inside,
00:52:38they're getting good blocking from their receivers on the outside,
00:52:40and their offensive linemen, they come out there,
00:52:43and it's like trying to hit a water bug with a boat oar.
00:52:46Those big guys come out there trying to block these defensive backs,
00:52:49and it's tough to get it sorted out.
00:52:52Now we're down to the two-minute warning,
00:52:54that a terrorist field goal still holds up for the Patriots' lead.
00:53:00Patriots holding to a 3-0 lead in the second quarter.
00:53:04Don Criggy with Steve Tasker, the Bills with only 83 total yards.
00:53:08They've had a punt six times, but as the Patriots fear, Steve, they're hanging around.
00:53:13They're only down three points.
00:53:15The Patriots managed one field goal, but the Patriots are really playing well defensively.
00:53:19They've taken Buffalo completely out of their run game.
00:53:21They've put Travis Henry out of the game.
00:53:24He may return. They're still waiting to see about that.
00:53:26He came off the field to go get checked,
00:53:28but Tom Brady needs to put just a few more points on the board
00:53:31and really put the pressure on the Bills' offense.
00:53:36Brady, got the Bills moving early.
00:53:38They got back. He goes long again, and Atlanta's sprinting for the ball.
00:53:42And that is David Patton who comes down with the ball,
00:53:45and a huge play as he takes it inside the 20.
00:53:49A 40-yard throw to David Patton,
00:53:52and the first big hit of the day for the Patriots on offense gets them down inside the 20.
00:53:57One of the things that's been going on here with the Patriots,
00:53:59they have really been taking some shots down the football field.
00:54:02Now, they haven't hit any yet, and they gave up one interception,
00:54:05but David Patton pulls this in, and all of a sudden you get the feeling
00:54:08it's going to be run, run, run at the Buffalo Bills' defensive line,
00:54:12and then hit them deep.
00:54:13They have thrown really no intermediate passes except to convert a third down.
00:54:19How an important drive for the Patriots.
00:54:21Can they take it in and build on this lead?
00:54:25Brady, and he ends up way too high.
00:54:31Jermaine Wiggins has only nine receptions in tight end,
00:54:35but three have been for touchdowns, was open.
00:54:38But Brady comes in high.
00:54:39You see the passing numbers for Brady.
00:54:41He just got 40 on that hit to David Patton.
00:54:43It's interesting.
00:54:44You see the Patriots come down into the red zone,
00:54:46and you know they're coached by a defensive coordinator
00:54:50because he starts to go with his big receivers, throw it to his tight end.
00:54:53You see their eight TDs and their last ten red zone possessions.
00:54:57That's a defensive coach's dream as a head coach.
00:55:00Brady, as Steve has, ten touchdown passes, just one interception in the red zone.
00:55:05Now he goes to the end zone again.
00:55:07Comes in way high, so he's got a little bit too much on his fastball.
00:55:11Antoine Winfield covering Troy Brown on the play.
00:55:14We spoke to head coach of the Bills, Greg Williams.
00:55:16He said, you know what?
00:55:17We were showing some film of the Patriots,
00:55:20and they come out in this cluster thing, and they got this route running,
00:55:23and two of the assistant coaches said, wow,
00:55:25that play was drawn up by a defensive coach.
00:55:28And he's right.
00:55:29If you want to know how to work a defense, ask a defensive coach,
00:55:33and that's what Bill Belichick is.
00:55:34He's got this offense running very well in the red zone
00:55:37because he understands what it takes to defend.
00:55:40They'll be defending a third down and ten play now.
00:55:44Double-wise to the right.
00:55:45Brady, play fake in, looks, out-pattern.
00:55:48Edwards takes the ball and a big hit.
00:55:51The undersized Antoine Winfield, who hits like a bazooka,
00:55:55tremendous young player out of Ohio State, puts the big hit out.
00:55:59The problem is Belichick's coaching against a guy who's a defensive coordinator, too.
00:56:03And really, the Bills' defense has looked as good in the red zone today
00:56:06as they've looked at any point in the field.
00:56:08They've made the Patriots settle for two field goal attempts,
00:56:11the second one of which is coming up right now,
00:56:13and that's a sign of two good head coaches who used to be defensive coordinators.
00:56:18This will be a 33-yarder, a virtual chip shot for the Longhorn.
00:56:25Kirsten's kicker, Bennett Terry, who's career-best is 55.
00:56:29He hit a 54-yarder last week against Cleveland,
00:56:32and he just gets it inside the upright.
00:56:34There's Karam Shatzkow, too, and he builds the Patriot lead to 6-0.
00:56:41Bennett Terry kicks off next.
00:56:44Former Bill, Fred Smurlus, who's going to go up on the ring of honor
00:56:49here at Ralph Wilson Stadium at halftime.
00:56:54John Bryson running the kickback, and he gets to the 29-yard line.
00:56:58Now, Fred was a longtime teammate of yours,
00:57:01a guy whose teammates used to kid him about leading Boston College's senior year
00:57:04to an 0-11 record, but he was a tremendous pro.
00:57:07Fred's the only guy I know. He had that same mustache when he was in the eighth grade.
00:57:12Wasn't he about 270?
00:57:15He was 275 in the eighth grade.
00:57:18Got that early growth spurt.
00:57:20They're giving out commemorative bobblehead dolls with Fred Smurlus' likeness,
00:57:25and they put stubble on it.
00:57:27And a very popular media figure in the hub of the universe,
00:57:30the Boston Talk Show host.
00:57:33Coming up in the next half-time report,
00:57:35join Jim, Mike, Randy, and Jerry for all the scores and highlights
00:57:39as Van Pelt looks for a play to get his team downfield.
00:57:44Lots of things going on today, including some upsets in the making.
00:57:47Is Detroit going to win its first game? They're up on the Vikings right now.
00:57:50You know, there's been a lot of speculation. Is Detroit the worst team in football?
00:57:53I'll tell you what, if they are, they're a very competitive worst team
00:57:55because there's a lot of teams from week to week that have played way worse
00:57:58than Detroit has every week.
00:58:00However, they pay off in final numbers.
00:58:02That's right. It's a bottom-line business, and Detroit's bottom line is not good.
00:58:07I'll tell you, last year the Lions were 9-7, barely missed a playoff spot.
00:58:12It changed everything, and now they're 0-12.
00:58:14How about Bill Belichick last year? He was 5-11.
00:58:170-2 to start this year, 1-3 as we mentioned earlier.
00:58:20Bob Kraft said he got calls asking, are you going to fire him?
00:58:24And now Belichick, a leading candidate to be NFL Coach of the Year.
00:58:27I agree. He is, I think he has done the best job of any head coach in the league.
00:58:33This is a club that looked like they were in a tailspin in the offseason,
00:58:37and yet they have turned it around thanks to the play of Tom Brady,
00:58:42but also a lot of the veterans that Bill Belichick has brought in.
00:58:46Brought in a lot of guys who weren't big salaries, but proven journeymen, proven contributors,
00:58:51and I think that's going to be the business model a lot of teams are going to follow in the future.
00:58:56These guys who are proven performers.
00:58:58They don't need a zillion dollars a year.
00:59:00Here is Van Pelt. He's over the line of scrimmage, and he gets ahead on first down for a gain of about four.
00:59:07One of the things about last year, these are all the teams that are turning around.
00:59:11Chicago's won four more games than they did a year ago.
00:59:14San Diego, of course, won more games. How could they not?
00:59:16Cleveland's a little bit of a surprise.
00:59:18I think New England is a surprise, a big surprise.
00:59:22And I think the way that they have won sets them up to be good for a while.
00:59:27Good running game, good defense, no mistakes.
00:59:30They haven't done anything fluky.
00:59:31You look at Cleveland, they've got like 6,000 interceptions.
00:59:34Well, the Patriots have their share, but nothing's out of kilter.
00:59:39Actually, 27 starting today, but that was 21 more than the Bulls had starting today.
00:59:44Out-patterned, and it's almost picked.
00:59:46As going after the ball, and nearly making a play at it for an interception, was Terrell Buckley.
00:59:53And this is one of the things that you saw the Patriots take a timeout a moment ago,
00:59:57maybe give themselves a chance to get this ball back and get another field goal.
01:00:01Alex Van Pelt going to the out route, but Terrell Buckley's right there.
01:00:04Thought he was going to pull it in, covering Eric Moles.
01:00:08As always happens with this Belichick team, Eric Moles, a guy you expect to play well, has disappeared.
01:00:15Didn't do much in the first game, and the Bills lament,
01:00:17we've got to do better on 3rd down today.
01:00:19Well, they're not doing well at all.
01:00:20They're 0 for 6 on 3rd downs.
01:00:23This, 3rd and 5, and here's Moles, no sooner said Steve.
01:00:28And he reappears, like a rabbit out of a hat.
01:00:32Eric Moles produces the 10-yard catch on 3rd down, and the Bills drive on.
01:00:36And the Bills take a timeout right there.
01:00:39Just 30 seconds to play in the first half.
01:00:42Who's the best quarterback that's never won a Super Bowl?
01:00:46Here are some of the candidates.
01:00:47Dan Marino, Fran Tarkington, Dan Fouts, Jim Kelly, Warren Moon, and Archie Manning.
01:00:53Just log on and cast your vote at NFL.com.
01:00:56And you've got to pick your friend Jim Kelly.
01:00:57I played with a bunch of them.
01:00:58I played with Marino in a Pro Bowl, Kelly, of course.
01:01:01I also played with Warren Moon my first year in the National Football League as Houston Oiler.
01:01:06I'll tell you what, that's an elite group.
01:01:09Let's throw Dan Fouts and Fran Tarkington in there.
01:01:13There's Jim Kelly.
01:01:14They're talking ahead to four Super Bowls like Kelly did.
01:01:16That's Jim Kelly right there, the guy on that list.
01:01:18There's Fred Smurlus and his family.
01:01:21I'll tell you what, it is a big moment for a player to go up on the Ring of Honor for the franchise that he played with.
01:01:29You can say what you want about Canton, Ohio, and believe me, that is the highest honor.
01:01:32But for individual players in cities, it really means a lot to go up on the Ring of Honor in that stadium.
01:01:39That says something not only about your career, but about how the fans and the community feel about you.
01:01:44Well, you're expected to be up there.
01:01:45I guess you have to be out to five years to get there.
01:01:48Why do I feel a party alert when I see Kelly and Smurlus together?
01:01:52It's been a long weekend here in Buffalo, I imagine.
01:01:55Let the good times roll when those two guys are in town.
01:01:59First and ten.
01:02:00He has 30 seconds on the clock.
01:02:06Downfield throw.
01:02:07Moles takes it in.
01:02:09What a play.
01:02:11Peerless Price is going to get the ball on the far flank.
01:02:14And down inside the 25-yard line, a 33-yard gain on the play.
01:02:19And the Bills took a quick timeout with 23 seconds to go.
01:02:22Now they've got time to take maybe one shot or maybe two at the end zone.
01:02:28Maybe to get a touchdown and take the lead at halftime.
01:02:31Watch Peerless Price.
01:02:32The same play we saw the Patriots run just a moment ago.
01:02:35Right up the numbers.
01:02:36One hand pulled it in against Terrell Buckley.
01:02:38What a great play.
01:02:40That's one of the things that Alex Van Pelt has brought to this offense.
01:02:43The ball's coming out on time.
01:02:45And I'm going to give my receivers a chance to make a play.
01:02:48And once in a while, they come through.
01:02:50Interesting formation, Steve.
01:02:51They ran a double wide left with Moles and Price together.
01:02:54When Moles broke off, the double team stayed with him.
01:02:57That's right.
01:02:58And as you'll see happen sometimes, the secondary receiver for a team will have a big day
01:03:02because no defense wants to give Eric Moles a chance to get going.
01:03:07Peerless Price, a very good player.
01:03:09He now has 41 catches for the year, six for touchdowns.
01:03:12You see there, Mike Grable.
01:03:14I'm sorry, not Mike Grable.
01:03:15That would be Steve Craigthorpe, the quarterback coach of the Buffalo Bills,
01:03:18radioing the play into Alex Van Pelt as he confers with Greg Williams.
01:03:24That's Craigthorpe right there.
01:03:27With 23 seconds left, they still have time to take a couple of shots at the end zone.
01:03:32They're in long field goal range, but unlike the Patriots, the Bills' kicking game is shaky.
01:03:37They're on their second field goal kicker this season.
01:03:39Really their third.
01:03:40Steve Christie left in the summer, got hurt.
01:03:43Then they went to Jake Arians, a rookie, and now they're with Shane Graham, first-year player.
01:03:50It was two for three on the season.
01:03:56Open backfield.
01:03:58Here comes the rush.
01:03:59There's the throw.
01:04:00Broke it up beautifully.
01:04:03Number 22, Terrence Shaw, makes a big play on defense for the Patriots.
01:04:07And this is, as we said before, the other end.
01:04:10As an offense comes down here, this is when your defensive coordinator earns his money
01:04:14because defense is all about giving up points.
01:04:17Right now, the Patriots want to do nothing but make the Bills settle for a field goal.
01:04:22Terrence Shaw there on the coverage, hit him right in the middle of the back.
01:04:25Hey, can't cover him better than that.
01:04:28Broke it up with his number.
01:04:31Second down, 18 to go.
01:04:35Second down, 18 seconds to play.
01:04:39Bills do have one timeout remaining.
01:04:47Lipser's come.
01:04:49Van Pelt throws.
01:04:51And it's incomplete.
01:04:52Not close.
01:04:53He was looking at Price again.
01:04:54An out pattern.
01:04:55Yeah, they looked unsure on their pattern on that.
01:04:57Both Price and Moles didn't know exactly what was going on out there.
01:05:01Alex Van Pelt threw the pattern he thought was called.
01:05:04Nobody was there to catch it.
01:05:07And that's yet another sign of a team that has struggled all year.
01:05:11Even at this point of the season, when you're in the 13th week,
01:05:14you're running plays and you don't look sure of what you're doing.
01:05:18Van Pelt just 5 of 17 throwing the ball.
01:05:21That's 29%.
01:05:24And leaving himself with very little protection now.
01:05:26Five wide out formations.
01:05:29Here comes the rush.
01:05:30Van Pelt makes the throw.
01:05:32In the end zone, and it's broken up.
01:05:34Again, well done by the Patriots.
01:05:36Ty Law, number 24, gets in front of Eric Moles.
01:05:40And the Bills send out their field goal unit
01:05:43with a guy who hasn't been proven much, so he hasn't been in the league long.
01:05:46And that's Alex Van Pelt.
01:05:47He's going to give his best guy on the field a chance to make a play.
01:05:50The problem is, the Patriots have got Ty Law, their best guy, covering him.
01:05:55That's well defended.
01:05:56That's two guys going up to try and make a play in the end zone.
01:06:00And Ty Law gets the better of it.
01:06:02It'll be a 42-yard attempt.
01:06:05Ramirezma holds.
01:06:06Shane Graham, 2 for 3.
01:06:08He's 0 for 1 from 40+.
01:06:11And that is an effort.
01:06:12It falls short.
01:06:14So the nemesis of the Bills all season, the nemesis of the kicking game,
01:06:17fights him again on the final play of the first half.
01:06:20Going to the locker room, the Patriots on two Adam Venateri field goals
01:06:23in as many tries, hold to a 6-0 lead.
01:06:25And that field goal would have given Buffalo a much better feeling about it.
01:06:28But right now, they've got no confidence coming out that they can do anything offensively.
01:06:32And it becomes the job of each coaching staff to make the adjustments to give them a chance to win.
01:06:37Bill Belichick is very good at halftime adjustments.
01:06:41And the Bills, seeing their most productive player in the first half,
01:06:44go off with an apparent knee injury.
01:06:46And the Bills, seeing their most productive player in the first half,
01:06:48go off with an apparent knee injury.
01:06:51The rookie runner, Travis Henry, while he was in,
01:06:53he had over 60 yards, 54 rushing and 13 catching.
01:06:59Now his return to this game is doubtful.
01:07:03The Patriots, though, expected a low-scoring game and a close one.
01:07:06And they've gotten it.
01:07:07Yeah, they have. And one of the things about the Buffalo Bills this year
01:07:09is they've gone 2-10 to this point.
01:07:11Has been their problems at halftime.
01:07:13And last week, for the first time, their defense came out after halftime
01:07:16and pitched a shutout against Carolina.
01:07:18They may have to do that again today,
01:07:20but it's going to be up to their coaching staff
01:07:22to put their players in a position to do it.
01:07:25The Bills, so far in the first half, have just 67 yards passing.
01:07:30Buffalo, 129 total yards.
01:07:32At the half, it's the Patriots' 6.
01:07:34The Bills, nothing.
01:07:35Coming up next, the Nextel Halftime Report.
01:07:37After a word from your local station.
01:07:39The exact same route, but to a different receiver.
01:07:42And this one is caught.
01:07:44David Patton pulls it in.
01:07:46Tom Brady bounces back.
01:07:47Shows a lot of resiliency in his youth.
01:07:49And here, as you see, the stats.
01:07:50The passing yards are a big difference.
01:07:52109 for the Patriots, only 67 for the Bills.
01:07:55I think one of the things that we can see, Don,
01:07:57from this Patriot offense in this second half,
01:08:00I think they're going to go back to Antoine Smith
01:08:02and start to pound the football.
