00:00:00The Georgia Doll Patriots by 10 over Atlanta. Craig Bullerjack back along with Trevor Maddich.
00:00:06Tom Brady all in the second quarter. After though a very impressive start by Atlanta.
00:00:12Chris Chandler we thought we'd see a lot of passing. We've had it. Chris Chandler the
00:00:15veterans quarterback opens up the scoring with a touchdown. Hits Shawn Jefferson. But
00:00:19what's impressive is after Chandler and Jefferson connect here is what the youngster Tom Brady
00:00:25does. He comes back and hits two touchdown passes in the second quarter. The first one
00:00:30to Kevin Faulk number 33 on the left side of the field. The Atlanta Falcons were not
00:00:35ready for that kind of a play to be called. And then the next one to his fullback Mark
00:00:39Edwards on the right side of the field. Once again Atlanta not ready for Tom Brady to be
00:00:44able to dig that deep down into his progression. Brady connecting with eight different receivers
00:00:52in that first half of play. Benitary will kick away. New England will start the third
00:01:07quarter up 17 7. They were down 7 0 on the first short kick. Vaughn at the 12. Vaughn
00:01:15at the 30. Vaughn at the 35. And Derek Vaughn rumbles his way to the 38 yard line. Trevor
00:01:23we look at the first half numbers passing yards. Brady came on strong in that second
00:01:28quarter finish with 194 while Chandler with 39 passing yards. And look at the time of
00:01:34possession. Wow. You wonder why Chandler doesn't have the yards. He hasn't had the ball.
00:01:38Chandler under center. Patriots showing blitz. Bluski trying to fill one of the gaps. Falcons
00:01:57start on the ground and those pads pop as Maurice Smith off the right side picks up a couple to the
00:02:0442. Well they're trying to get the running game established because that's what's going to open
00:02:09up the passing game. Chandler wants to get more passing yards but it comes off of the running
00:02:13game. It's cliche to say but Atlanta really is tied to that preset. When Maurice Smith 58 yards
00:02:20on the ground today the other team plays of 19 combining for 52 yards. It's Maurice Smith
00:02:28has out gained the rest of the Falcons all by his lonesome. Second down a little flip to the
00:02:37flat and a collision. Bob Christian who normally is that power blocker back who has been around
00:02:46and helped Jamal Anderson with those thousand yard seasons with his 12th reception of the season.
00:02:55He's the kind of guy as a pass receivers like a nutcracker when everything's too tough everywhere
00:02:59else you put him in and have him loosen up the defense a bit with a reception and so when they
00:03:04throw to Bob Christian it's because nobody else is breaking free. First down at the 49 of New
00:03:12England. You know Maurice Smith great story. Well Maurice Smith is a great story but he ran
00:03:28into the defensive game plan of New England here. Remember that in games past they've had a soft
00:03:33two deep zone. Well here they start with a two deep zone and this safety was back here. Instead
00:03:39he came up and now there's only one safety deep in the middle. There's eight guys up to stop the
00:03:44run and that's what they've been doing. Second down Matthews in motion quick throw and the
00:03:54Matthews near side read nicely eaten up by lawyer Malloy. Malloy a six year pro out of Washington
00:04:05team time pro bowler back in 98 99. But now why is Malloy up there to make that tackle. He's up
00:04:12there because normally he's back in the two deep zone and that now they rotate him up late. They
00:04:18start with a two deep look. They rotate him up late. If you look at defensive coordinator Romeo
00:04:23Cornell who's done a great job of altering the game plan this week and getting Malloy up to the
00:04:28line of scrimmage where he is now. Third down and eight. He is taken down hard at the 48 Willie
00:04:44McGinnis. Now this time Craig they did just the opposite. They started out in a one deep zone look
00:04:50and then Malloy backed off from the line of scrimmage into a two deep look. Malloy is here. He
00:04:57started here and he backs out. So now it's a two deep look. And when Chandler goes back he sees
00:05:03more safeties than what he saw in his initial read when he came to the line of scrimmage. There was
00:05:08one safety back there. They moved late to where there are two Chris Moore back at his own 35 yard
00:05:18line to punch. Troy Brown awaits. Brown pedals back at the five. Oh look at that specialty
00:05:33coverage by the guys in black Falcons all over him. Why is he catching the ball at the five
00:05:38inside the 10. He's supposed to let it go. 46 yards moved and a one yard return. You're right.
00:05:45We'll be back. New England and Atlanta 17-7 Patriots. Two teams struggled a year ago finished
00:05:53on the bottom of the pile. Now trying to work their way up. Coming up Cleveland and Chicago,
00:05:57Kansas City and San Diego. Those teams also trying to rise back up from the ashes to the top. Look at
00:06:08that. Chicago 5-1. San Diego with Flutie 5-2. Cleveland with Butch Davis 4-2. Arizona 2-4.
00:06:17Atlanta 3-3. New England 3-4. You know what none of those the top three in last place last year
00:06:24at this time. Now they're either first or second. We got them coming up next. Parody in the National
00:06:31Football League. Boy Antoine Smith. Craig this is something to look for. Whenever you see a hit
00:06:44happens and a guy's head snaps back. That's how you that's how you define a big hit. And Antoine
00:06:49Smith had just watched nothing but Antoine Smith's head as he comes in. Nothing but his head. Whoa
00:06:57you can see it snap back there. That's a big hit. That ball popped out of there as you saw on the
00:07:05replay. Clock running. Coming up on ten and a half minutes left. Third down and five. Brady
00:07:12sets throws on the fingertips and trying to crawl for the first down is Troy Brown. Right now Troy
00:07:25Brown is on the ground kneeling down with the official trying to lobby his case that he actually
00:07:28caught the thing. This is a terrific route. It's man coverage. He starts in, leaps back and comes
00:07:35back out against Ashley Ambrose. And Brady lays that ball way out where only Troy Brown can catch
00:07:41it. But I you know that was nothing but a seven on seven drill. Man for man. Man coverage. A man
00:07:47type route. And Troy Brown wins. Out come the sticks. Ooh that close. That's the length of both of our
00:08:00thumbs together I think. Good effort by Troy Brown. Last week against the Broncos nine catches at 86
00:08:07yards with a touchdown. Ken Walter will come in to punt. He's done a good job in relief of Lee
00:08:22Johnson. Lee Johnson. I played with him at BYU and I just forgot his name. How about that? Lee
00:08:26Johnson. But today in this dome in perfect weather he's really struggled to get any distance on his
00:08:32kicks. He mentioned Lee Johnson. 17 years in this league. Released back in mid-October. All time
00:08:40leader in punts. Yeah. And punt yards. Over 50,000 yards of punting. Punting yards. Long snap count.
00:08:54The left footer. Good hang time. Fair catch. At the 43 yard line. So a time out after the 39 yard boot. We'll be back.
00:09:14The NFL on CBS. Is sponsored by GMC. From professional grade people come professional grade
00:09:23trucks. Nike. And by CDW. Computing solutions built for business. Welcome back to Atlanta. Here's a
00:09:38question. Who's the best kick punt returner over the last 10 years. Desmond Howard. Dave Meggett. Eric Metcalf. Glenn
00:09:43Milburn. Brian Mitchell. Just log on. Catch your vote at NFL.com. I vote Brian Mitchell. I'm not going to argue much
00:09:50with you. Got it away. Incomplete. Oh Chandler at the last second able to get the ball away but bringing the steam was
00:09:59Otis Smith. And that's that aggressive defense. That's what Romeo Cornell is doing here that he wasn't doing over the
00:10:07course of the last bit as we look at Otis Smith. But he's going to come way from here. Watch Chandler. Chandler has no
00:10:13clue that Otis Smith is coming. Not an idea. You know why. Because he read the defense and what he read was what the
00:10:19Wingers has done in the past which is hey no problem. Well guess what. They changed the program. Now there's a problem. And
00:10:26this is one of the reasons that the Falcons only have seven points. Chandler able to bounce up quickly. Otis Smith however slow
00:10:36off the field. As I mentioned he's the oldest Patriot 36 years young and still putting up putting a helmet down. Put the
00:10:43helmet down. That's a couple. That's a lot of years of experience. Look at that. First six games to a sack 10 times today
00:10:49four because they're coming from unexpected places.
00:10:56Chandler far sideline shedding a.
00:11:02Algie Crumpler the rookie tight end from North Carolina. Well there's Algie Crumpler. He had a huge game against the Saints two
00:11:12weeks ago. They put him all the way out in a wide receiver position. Both tight ends are out there. And when Algie catches the
00:11:17ball out there he breaks the tackle of the strong safety and runs over the cornerback.
00:11:24First reception by a Falcon tight end 6 2 2 62 on the clock. They timed him in the 40 at 4 9 2. Yeah that's a lot of momentum.
00:11:34Let's run through a wall momentum.
00:11:36Check it.
00:11:41Chandler again throws. Crumpler spins out of bounds at the 37 yard line.
00:11:47And a one major player missing from this New England defense is the linebacker Brian Cox the three time pro bowler controversial broke a
00:11:57leg last week against Denver. Dan Neal find 15000 for that for that hit. And you know what that's a misfire by the
00:12:05NFL. It's unfortunate that Cox is out. It's unfortunate not just for the team but for the league that a player of his stature is
00:12:11not on the field. But Dan Neal absolutely should not have been fined at all for that. Maybe 15 yard penalty but not a fine. It was
00:12:19clean.
00:12:24Second down on the ground. Maurice Smith.
00:12:27For the first down marker.
00:12:30And when I when I say clean. If you look at William McGinnis clean in that Dan Neal Denver's guard that broke the allegedly broke the
00:12:38leg of Brian Cox. What was clean was his intent. He didn't mean to break his leg. He went out on a block. He got beat. He lunged at the
00:12:45last second and to avoid the lunge Cox jumped and when he came down he came down funny and broke his leg. But intent is what's
00:12:53required for a 15000 dollar fine. And it was clear in watching the coach's game film. There was no way there was intent.
00:13:04Third down and short.
00:13:07Maurice Smith first down. The hard way. Yeah the hard punishing hit. That's right. On the 32 yard line. That's right. No trickiness in
00:13:16here. Maurice Smith a look at it. He's all geared up like a guy that's in a physical battle with death.
00:13:23Look at the line surge. They're just going to go straight forward. Nobody pulls its full forward to get that first down. And I'll tell you
00:13:29they're about five yards away from field goal range right now.
00:13:33Roman Pfeiffer the outside backer. Put a big hit on Mo Smith 10 carries for 76 yards. That's pretty good for your your per carry average.
00:13:45Christian in motion.
00:13:47Chamber throws and complete on his hands and off.
00:13:51You know that's a lot harder catch to make than you think. Chandler's frustrated. They're down here at field goal range. That's a difficult catch. You got to
00:13:59make it. But it's a weird angle that the ball comes in. The problem with it now is it leaves you at second and 10. This team is down 17 to 7. The third
00:14:08quarter is halfway gone. There's not many drives they can waste down here.
00:14:13He turns his head. He sees the ball. But again it's a weird angle. But again this is a critical drive for Atlanta right now. Down 10 points at this part of the
00:14:21game with New England's defense playing as well as it is.
00:14:29Maurice Smith.
00:14:32The fingertips incomplete.
00:14:36Reggie Kelly the tight end.
00:14:39Well Chris Chandler is clearly trying to do what Tom Brady successfully did in the first half. Find alternative receivers. He threw to one tight end Algie
00:14:47Crumpler. Now he goes back to Reggie Kelly the other tight end on the opposite side of the field. The tight ends were quiet in the first half of this game after
00:14:55having a huge impact against the Saints two weeks ago. And you can tell that Chandler is trying to get him involved. But now third and 10. Now they've got to get five
00:15:04yards to have their field goal attempt.
00:15:077 0 6 remaining third quarter.
00:15:11Kozlowski in motion over 85 a throw incomplete. Terrence Mathis the intended receiver no flag. A bit of a collision around the 17 yard line.
00:15:22And Ty Law the left corner was cover man for New England. Well I tell you that that's rough because again at this point of the game they are going to go for the field goal. This is going to be a 50 yard field goal.
00:15:34After a 58 yard that Jay Philly tried at the end of the first half they're really put him out on an island now because when they get opportunities to get into better field goal range they're misfiring.
00:15:46Philly's longest is a 55 on the year.
00:15:51This will be from 50 yards. Good snap. Good hole kick is away. It has distance but it's wide to the left. That's a tough thing to ask a field goal kicker to do.
00:16:02A real tough thing.
00:16:05Left is the offense's fault. You'd say the kickers wide left there. No, the offense is wide left because of that ball. If that ball is 15 yards closer. It's not wide left.
00:16:18One more time. Close, but yet New England still on top.
00:16:23Tonight on 60 minutes whether he was sweet talking Jackie Kennedy or dealing with matters of state. Lyndon Johnson's private phone calls were all secretly recorded and guess who has the tapes. Find out 60 minutes tonight on CBS.
00:16:49My name's Trevor Madditch.
00:16:52I'll tell you it hit the turf around the 41. I'll tell you what I'll sit the turf around 10 yards behind that was Tom Brady.
00:17:00Let's look at Travis Hall. Problem is there were two defensive linemen that got there at the same time. Travis Hall hit Brady and the other D lineman hit Travis Hall.
00:17:12And Reese with photos from above to the technology that's in this game today. Trevor. It's amazing.
00:17:21Well, the technology. Yeah, what they're doing now. I mean, he was talking about the complexity of the offense. Dan Reeve was and how now you can at least signal in with the radio headset. Whereas in the past, you had to signal in by hand. All those complex things.
00:17:38Travis Hall out of Brigham Young most tackles by an interior lineman in this league since 96 with 461
00:17:46Well, they're going to converge on Brady. Look at number 98 Travis Hall.
00:17:53You know, it's hard to see what happened. It almost seems like he may have landed
00:17:58With somebody's knee in his rib. He's holding his ribs and I'll tell you when it comes to pain. Craig broken rib pain is its own kind of problem. I don't know if he has a broken rib. He's holding his rib.
00:18:09But even a big huge guy like that, when you get that kind of pain, you got to come out and sit down and reset because it's very sharp, a sharp, sharp pain.
00:18:22Travis Hall to the sideline second down at 10 for New England.
00:18:28Quick throw far side pitching catch Troy Brown.
00:18:32They're going to keep the clock running at the 44, call it the 45 yard line.
00:18:36That was a fortunate bounce.
00:18:39Ray Buchanan got the ball out of there, but it bounced right back up into Troy Brown's hands.
00:18:4434, Ray Buchanan is going to read this thing, come right up and strip the ball from Troy Brown, but then take a look at where the ball bounces. Point right back up into his hand on the second bounce.
00:18:54And how's that for living right?
00:18:58Scores around the league.
00:19:06Incomplete.
00:19:08Got a handout was Ray Buchanan.
00:19:10Yeah, second time in a row this drive, the young pup quarterback Tom Brady goes after the veteran Ray Buchanan.
00:19:16I mean, Ray Buchanan right now is being challenged by Tom Brady.
00:19:20This time he's up to the task, very tight coverage, and Brady throws it in there anyway, he's able to get his hand around and knock it down, but Brady wanted a flag, he thought that that was pass interference, I don't think so.
00:19:32Walter will punt, his three punts averaging just under 29 yards a kick, takes a bounce and hit a Patriot, they try to throw it back into play and they will down it, at the 1, and the boos are coming out of this crowd, touchback is what the Falcon fans are going to call it, and it's a touchdown for the Patriots, and it's a touchdown for the Patriots, and it's a touchdown for the Patriots, and it's a touchdown for the Patriots, and it's a touchdown for the Patriots, and it's a touchdown for the Patriots, and it's a touchdown for the Patriots, and it's a touchdown for the Patriots, and it's a touchdown for the Patriots, and it's a touchdown for the Patriots, and it's a touchdown for the Patriots, and it's a touchdown for the Patriots, and it's a touchdown for the Patriots, and it's a touchdown for the Patriots, and it's a touchdown for the Patriots,
00:20:02so that's what clicked today, it's what the fans want, loved it, now the signal will come.
00:20:0655-yard kick.
00:20:12Time out at the Georgia Dome, 555 to go on the 3rd.
00:20:18The NFL on CBS is sponsored by Circuit City.
00:20:21We know how you feel that's why we're here.
00:20:23Circuit City, we're with you.
00:20:26And by Applebee's neighborhood grill and bar, eating good in the neighborhood, Applebee's.
00:20:36Monday on CBS, a hospital visit brings the king of Queens face-to-face with the world's
00:20:40most annoying patient, Chris Elliott guest stars in an all-new King of Queens Monday
00:20:45right here on CBS.
00:20:52Ever since the first quarter, Falcons and Chris Chandler just have not been on the same
00:20:56page.
00:20:57No, they haven't.
00:20:58Touchback situation.
00:20:59First and 10 Atlanta on the 20-yard line.
00:21:04There's Dick Hantak.
00:21:05As we went to break, there was some confusion, but yes, the ball did go bound into the end
00:21:09zone.
00:21:10Touchback, 20-yard line, first and 10.
00:21:12Yeah, Tebucky Jones had established contact with his feet beyond the goal line into the
00:21:17end zone.
00:21:18Therefore, when he touched the ball, it was immediately a touchback.
00:21:25Patriots, eight men in the box are bringing heat.
00:21:32Mo Smith nearly broke a tackle, but stumbles up around the 20, he gains maybe a half a
00:21:37yard.
00:21:38Trevor, you talked about Brian Cox, and there was a lot of talk after that game about Dan
00:21:45Neal.
00:21:46He was very vocal about to repay, retribution, but yet he did send in an apology saying after
00:21:53talking to family and friends, he realizes that he's not out to try to hurt anybody because
00:21:57everybody's got to pay the bills and take care of family.
00:21:59Yeah, and a few years ago, he would have tried to go out to hurt them, but he's grown up
00:22:03and matured, and there's a lot of emotion when you're sitting on the field injured.
00:22:08Chandler, the pump fake, off the hands of Crumpler.
00:22:15Flag down.
00:22:16They're trying to get the tight ends involved, they're almost forcing it to him, but this
00:22:21time...
00:22:22Holding, defense number 26, five yard penalty, first down.
00:22:28This time it works out for him, Matt Stevens is the backup three safety.
00:22:32He goes to Crumpler again, a pump fake, and usually what happens there is, take a look
00:22:37at Stevens, he bites on the pump fake, Crumpler goes by him, and he grabs him so it's not
00:22:41a touchdown.
00:22:43Of the bad things that could have happened there, that was the better of the bad choices.
00:22:51Matt Stevens, six year pro out of Appalachian State, boy now six flags on the Falcons, five
00:22:59for New England.
00:23:00But it's only a five yard penalty and a first down, so it's not bad for New England.
00:23:06From the 25 yard line, Chandler throws high and complete.
00:23:15Let's go to New York City, update on the Colts, Colts and Bills, here's Jim Nance.
00:23:19Jim?
00:23:20Alright, Craig, you may be wondering how is life without Edrin James this week for the
00:23:23Colts.
00:23:24James out with a knee injury, his replacement, Dominique Rhodes, 54 yards rushing and this
00:23:30touchdown for the 17 point lead.
00:23:32Let's go back down to Atlanta to Craig Trestle.
00:23:35Thank you Jim, Colts trying to find some answers, beat up but yet up 24-7.
00:23:44Chandler under center, his numbers today, 7 of 18, interception, 81 yards and a touchdown.
00:23:52Sets and throws, a little sidearm and a ball that Terrence Mathis would like to have back.
00:23:59This crowd getting a little restless on some sloppy play by Atlanta.
00:24:02And it's not all Chris Chandler's fault, but the crowd is now chanting, we want Vic.
00:24:10We want Vic, Michael Vic.
00:24:15And you know what?
00:24:16Chris Chandler hears it.
00:24:19Number one pick, Virginia Tech, 4-3-3 speed in the 40, folks.
00:24:33Chandler under a heavy rush, down he goes.
00:24:36For the Patriots, I'll tell you emotional, the level of emotion with this team from first
00:24:43quarter through the second and the third, they have just taken it to another level.
00:24:48They have really tried some different blitz packages.
00:24:50They have.
00:24:51This is the same blitz that Otis Smith got them with before.
00:24:54They left one safety deep instead of two, brought the other safety on a blitz and Chandler
00:25:00didn't see him coming.
00:25:01The rest of the protection broke down as well.
00:25:06Troy Brown at the 44, Brown spins to midfield and reaches to the 49-yard line.
00:25:15Brian Kozlowski made the special team's tackle.
00:25:1917-7 New England.
00:25:24Next weekend, join the Shark and many of the tour's top players, including John Daly,
00:25:28Jesper Barnevik, Lee Jansen, Corey Fabin, Raymond Floyd at the Franklin-Templeton shootout
00:25:33before golf coverage.
00:25:34Go to cbs.sportsline.com or AOL keyword, CBS Sportsline.
00:25:40On the deck, picked up Atlanta Hazard.
00:25:46Ashley Ambrose.
00:25:50And maybe that puts the spark back into Falcons.
00:25:53And it puts a big damper on New England.
00:25:56Here we go again, Otis.
00:25:58They don't have a feature back because none of their backs hold onto the ball.
00:26:01That's Mark Edwards, free agent in this year.
00:26:03Normally sure-handed, although he doesn't carry the ball a lot.
00:26:07The exchange was a bit fobbled and he wasn't able to get control.
00:26:11Ashley Ambrose takes advantage.
00:26:13What a swing in this game after New England's defense absolutely stifles Chris Chandler
00:26:19and the offense of the Falcons.
00:26:21They got the ball right back.
00:26:23As Chandler trotted to the huddle, the boos began to erupt.
00:26:27And of course, Michael Vick, the number one pick on the bench.
00:26:32Booming from the veteran.
00:26:35And New England not having anything to do with that ground game today
00:26:39as Brandon Mitchell, 96, busted through from the nose.
00:26:44Yeah, well, this is why you can't outlaw cut blocking in there.
00:26:48The left guard, uh...
00:26:52It was Garza. Here we go.
00:26:54He comes in like this and gets beat.
00:26:56When he goes high, he can't make the block.
00:26:59He's got to go low and cut him down because Mitchell's on the play side.
00:27:03Garza doesn't have a chance to make that block unless he can cut him.
00:27:08That's why you have to make it legal to cut inside or keep it legal to cut inside.
00:27:13Backfield's empty. Five wide receivers.
00:27:17Chandler, no protection and trouble.
00:27:22And now the boos. You can hear it here at the Georgia Dome.
00:27:27Anthony Pleasant was the first to bring the heat from the right side.
00:27:31And Chandler's slow getting up.
00:27:33Very slow. There's Michael Vick.
00:27:35Yeah, at this point, the protection is breaking down so badly.
00:27:38Chandler, who's not nifty, breaks away from number 54.
00:27:43That's Bruschi and runs into a defensive lineman.
00:27:48That's Anthony Pleasant.
00:27:49And that's not a guy that can take that many hits.
00:27:52If the protection is going to break down that badly,
00:27:54then Michael Vick is going to have to come in for the health sake of Chris Chandler.
00:27:58Well, that's definitely a struggle.
00:28:00Six sacks. Chandler's been on his back plenty today.
00:28:04Again, they spread the field. Chandler's sling arms underneath the coverage.
00:28:09And it's complete to Tony Martin.
00:28:11Close to a first down at the 44-43 yard line.
00:28:16Pfeiffer and Malloy teamed up to make the hit.
00:28:19That was a big third down. Third and 17.
00:28:21They've got a punt and Chandler looks like a man who has been pounded.
00:28:26They've got to either protect him or get him out of there.
00:28:29Here he stands in and delivers the ball.
00:28:31And now look at it.
00:28:33It's like, you know, what's hurting?
00:28:35And he leads. He's listening to Port.
00:28:39Looks like his right shoulder might have taken a pounding.
00:28:44Troy Brown awaits the punt.
00:28:47Takes a bounce at the three.
00:28:49Touchback and they'll bring it back to the 20.
00:28:52A 43-yard kick.
00:28:54And Chandler's being looked at.
00:28:58Saturday, the Home Depot SEC football rolls into Athens, Georgia.
00:29:03As two teams tangle to stay in the conference race.
00:29:06Daniel Cobb and the Auburn Tigers get after David Green and the Bulldogs of Georgia.
00:29:11It's a showdown between the hedges.
00:29:13Auburn, Georgia, Saturday, right here on CBS.
00:29:20Michael Vick is tossing the football.
00:29:23The left-hander, the rookie, the number one pick in last year's NFL draft.
00:29:31Brady, the pitch.
00:29:36Antoine Smith picking his way down to the 42-yard line.
00:29:42The Patriots now have a chance to really, really get the Falcons down.
00:29:46Really get them down.
00:29:48After what's happened to the Falcons offense the last three series.
00:29:52To start this series with a running play that gains that many yards up a hole that's that wide open.
00:29:58Score is still within reach for Atlanta.
00:30:00It's 17-7, but a touchdown now would be really hard for them to come back from.
00:30:05Antoine Smith now 56 yards on 12 carries.
00:30:13Sticks his nose in for more.
00:30:15Let's head back to New York City.
00:30:16Jim Nance with an update.
00:30:18All right, thank you, baller.
00:30:19Steve McNair has run for a touchdown and now thrown for his second.
00:30:23Derrick Mason calls it in for the lead.
00:30:26The Titans have come back from 10 down.
00:30:29Going front 21-17, early fourth.
00:30:31Back to you.
00:30:33It's good to see Steve McNair back and doing well.
00:30:35He struggled so much this year.
00:30:38Well, there's a quarterback struggle right now.
00:30:41Chandler on the bench.
00:30:43Falcons trying to bring the blitz and the pitch to the right side.
00:30:47Antoine Smith high steps it out of bounds.
00:30:50Stops a clock at the 44-yard line.
00:30:52Good pursuit by Brooking who was so active in that first quarter
00:30:56and has not played a big factor for Atlanta defensively since.
00:30:59No, he really hasn't.
00:31:00They've gotten offensive linemen up on him to block him better.
00:31:03And this is a long way for Brooking to have to go.
00:31:06As a matter of fact, if Brooking isn't there,
00:31:08there's a good chance that Smith would go for another seven or eight yards.
00:31:11That's good pursuit.
00:31:12And look at the nose.
00:31:13Boy, he's already bleeding.
00:31:15That's a middle linebacker.
00:31:1711-yard game.
00:31:18Antoine Smith now 70 on the day.
00:31:21Brooking with 10 tackles.
00:31:23No wonder the nose is bleeding.
00:31:28Buckley's checked in as a wideout.
00:31:30They go up and over the middle.
00:31:31Dangerous.
00:31:32Oh, you've got to be kidding.
00:31:34It's pulled down.
00:31:35Troy Brown.
00:31:36Touchdown.
00:31:43Look at Drew Bledsoe.
00:31:52He can't believe it.
00:31:53He just can't believe it.
00:31:55He's like, why can't that happen to me?
00:32:01Boy, when you're living right, you're living right.
00:32:02He's going for Patton.
00:32:05Into coverage.
00:32:07This could have been intercepted by Ashley Ambrose.
00:32:09And Troy Brown just looks up and sees a big football.
00:32:12Looks like the immaculate reception.
00:32:14Except the guy that caught it weighs about 70 pounds less than Franco.
00:32:18Look at Brady.
00:32:19Okay.
00:32:20I'll take it.
00:32:22Extra point by Bennett Terry.
00:32:24You've seen this business long enough, you see some crazy things.
00:32:29Ping pong.
00:32:30Pinball.
00:32:31Whatever you want to call it.
00:32:3224-7 with 34 seconds left in the third quarter.
00:32:35Troy Brown with a Houdini-like touchdown.
00:32:41Yeah, that was Houdini.
00:32:43David Copperfield.
00:32:45Look, Troy Brown can't believe it.
00:32:47That's one of those things.
00:32:48You work all your life in football, but you don't get that play because you worked hard.
00:32:52You got that play because you just were the luckiest man in three counties.
00:32:56And he was.
00:32:57And you know what?
00:32:58He'll take it.
00:32:59But when you're a hot quarterback, things happen to you.
00:33:03Understand, Trevor, you're right on with your look at Chandler.
00:33:07He has bent really now to the right as he took a shot, we understand, from the ribs,
00:33:12headed to the sideline, and will be X-rayed.
00:33:15And you know what?
00:33:16You've got to give him credit for standing in the pocket and taking those hits,
00:33:19trying to make something happen.
00:33:21But all this year, he's had outstanding protection.
00:33:24They geared up for New England, not realizing what kind of a game this is.
00:33:29They geared up for New England, not realizing what kind of adjustments
00:33:32New England was going to make.
00:33:34The offensive front, the offensive game plan of Atlanta,
00:33:38in talking to them in practice on Thursday and Friday,
00:33:41they said they weren't going to make any real big adjustments.
00:33:44As we look at Michael Vick ready to come in,
00:33:46because they weren't sure what New England was going to do.
00:33:48But what New England did was attack them.
00:33:50And the result was the quarterback is out.
00:33:53Swift kick taken inside the 25-yard line.
00:33:58That's Crumpler, the tight end, with good hands
00:34:00and good field position for Vick at the 37.
00:34:05And again, word coming up from the field to us
00:34:08that Chandler's going to be out for the game.
00:34:10So the game is now into the hands of the rookie, Michael Vick.
00:34:13And you look at that play-calling chart that Dan Reeves has,
00:34:16there's probably 150 plays on that for Chandler.
00:34:19Michael Vick is going to have about a dozen that he's going to run.
00:34:22And probably eight of them are Michael Vick pulled the ball down and run.
00:34:26Dan Reeves told us something very interesting yesterday.
00:34:29He said, you know what, he's a great player, he's going to be a great player,
00:34:33but not that particularly ready to play.
00:34:35He says, language of a quarterback has to be learned before you're ready.
00:34:39Michael Vick is still learning that language.
00:34:41He's learning the language of calling the plays
00:34:43and what the defense is doing against him.
00:34:47Very complex, still learning.
00:34:53Vick will try to throw on his first attempt,
00:34:55but cannot escape the grasp of Mike Grable,
00:35:00the outside linebacker, along with Pleasant.
00:35:03How does this change defensively the mindset of New England now?
00:35:07Well, now New England, rather than attack,
00:35:09New England is better off rushing their four guys, maybe five.
00:35:13Don't try to get to Vick in the pocket.
00:35:15Keep him in the pocket. Don't let him run out of there.
00:35:17Don't let him run out of there. He runs a 4-3-40.
00:35:19Make him read seven and eight guys back in coverage
00:35:23and see if he'll throw the ball to you.
00:35:30That ends the third quarter with the score.
00:35:33New England leading Atlanta 24-7.
00:35:36We'll return to the Georgia Dome right after this message
00:35:39and a word from your local station.
00:35:43Tom Brady's three touchdown throws.
00:35:45His arm, his poise, has led New England to a 24-7 lead.
00:35:49Chris Chandler in the locker room, out.
00:35:51X-rays on his ribs.
00:35:53And now the rookie, Michael Vick, under center for Atlanta.
00:35:57Pitch to Maurice Smith.
00:35:59They're still not getting helmets out there.
00:36:01Smith up around the 39-yard line and Teddy Bruschi.
00:36:04I tell you, that's a football name.
00:36:06That is Teddy Bruschi, six-year pro in Arizona.
00:36:10And you know what he did there?
00:36:12He had the young quarterback, so he stemmed up into the line of scrimmage, came back.
00:36:16Stemmed up into the line, came back right in Michael Vick's face,
00:36:19right in the middle of the line of scrimmage,
00:36:21to get Michael to have to look at him and try to confuse him.
00:36:24You talk about limited offensive plays for Vick.
00:36:28Is there going to be a lot to improvise out there for him as well?
00:36:32Because of his speed?
00:36:34That's part of the game plan for him, yes.
00:36:36They've got to get him to the perimeter.
00:36:40Vick stands, throws.
00:36:41He's got an arm, and he hits across the middle.
00:36:44Finneran, Finneran, out of bounds inside the 15.
00:36:52Matt Stephens gave him the push.
00:36:55And look how hard that ball came in.
00:36:57Finneran did a great job of hanging on to it.
00:36:59Michael Vick has got an absolute cannon for an arm.
00:37:04Finneran's on the outside.
00:37:05Now he breaks in.
00:37:06Look how fast this ball comes in.
00:37:08And he catches it with his hands.
00:37:09Boy, those are big, soft hands in order to be able to pull in a ball that goes that fast.
00:37:13But look at the difference in the change now.
00:37:15All of a sudden, they've got the ball in touchdown position.
00:37:18Down 24-7, they've got new life.
00:37:21And who gave it to them?
00:37:22This young man.
00:37:2350-yard completion from Vick to Finneran.
00:37:27First down at the 12-yard line.
00:37:32Murray Smith up the middle for a wide-open hole to the 6.
00:37:38Ted Johnson making the tackle.
00:37:41He's filling in for the injured Brian Cox inside.
00:37:45Now, all of a sudden, this game doesn't feel like it's over.
00:37:47This crowd is absolutely energized, much more than they've been since the end of the first quarter.
00:37:53And that energizes the team.
00:37:56Well, you put a touchdown right now in the end zone early in this fourth quarter.
00:38:00It's a whole new feel.
00:38:02Mo Smith now with 14 carries for 81 yards.
00:38:06Second down and five.
00:38:08Man, this is the motion, man.
00:38:10Vick.
00:38:11Hand off.
00:38:12Off the right side goes Smith.
00:38:14Close to a first down.
00:38:16Johnson again wrapped him up.
00:38:17Well, Murray Smith in for the injured Jamal Williams.
00:38:20Jamal with his second ACL.
00:38:22He tore up the opposite knee that he tore up the first time around.
00:38:25And Murray Smith has some similar qualities as Jamal.
00:38:29Murray Smith is a big back.
00:38:31He's not as strong and bruising.
00:38:32He is a little faster hitting the hole.
00:38:35But what he doesn't have as much as Jamal is the ability to create a cut back.
00:38:39And that's why you see runs like we just saw from Murray Smith where he hits the hole tall and drags defenders with him.
00:38:46He was undrafted from North Carolina A&T.
00:38:48Signed his contract at the Walpole House in Greensboro, North Carolina.
00:38:53Mo Smith pushing.
00:38:56Trying to punish the guys in white.
00:38:58But he's pushed back by Matt Stevens.
00:39:00Now, he'd like to sign the free agent deal at the Waffle House in Greensboro.
00:39:03I'll tell you, at the Waffle House, how would he ever have expected that signing that deal at that restaurant would get him right down here in big games like this.
00:39:11And that's what he wanted to do.
00:39:12And he did a good job running the ball.
00:39:14But now they're going to settle for a field goal.
00:39:16But I'll tell you what.
00:39:17The combination of Michael Vick and an energized Murray Smith getting him down there.
00:39:21This thing no longer feels like it's over.
00:39:23We have us a lot of excitement down there.
00:39:27Feeley will try officially from 21.
00:39:31Well, he's been asked to do a lot today from 58 and 49.
00:39:35This is merely like an extra point.
00:39:37Chip shot.
00:39:38Feeley.
00:39:39And the kick is up and good.
00:39:41And now they're two touchdowns down, 11 minutes to go.
00:39:46Game's in reach.

00:40:09Well, after the injury to Chandler, Vick drives Atlanta down for a three-pointer.
00:40:17Kevin Faulk at the goal line breaks a tackle and is taken down around the 17-yard line.
00:40:30Tom Brady returns.
00:40:35Eight different receivers that Brady's hooked up with today.
00:40:40One, and really you wonder, the future?
00:40:43A lot of talk around Terry Glynn.
00:40:45Terry Glynn.
00:40:46Lots of problems.
00:40:48Huge distraction.
00:40:49And, you know, he's sitting at home right now.
00:40:53And that's probably where he ought to stay.
00:41:00Patton is in motion.
00:41:01They hand it off.
00:41:02And a big game for Antoine Smith.
00:41:06Rooking, who put a Band-Aid on that busted-up nose, made the tackle.
00:41:10And getting back to Glynn, there's all sorts of different situations at hand.
00:41:14You know, there's arbitration that's awaiting.
00:41:18And, you know, hamstrings that were supposedly pulled.
00:41:22We talked to Coach Bill Belichick yesterday.
00:41:25I'd say the head coach, to me, Trevor, looked absolutely worn out when he talked about Terry Glynn.
00:41:31I mean, worn out.
00:41:34Right.
00:41:40Making something out of nothing.
00:41:42Mark Edwards was stopped.
00:41:43Rolled off his tackler and picked up three to the 33.
00:41:48Well, you know, you talk about Coach being worn out yesterday.
00:41:52Terry Glynn has practiced a total of seven days with the team,
00:41:57including mini-camps and off-season workouts, since May of this last year.
00:42:01And I've got to tell you this, that Terry Glynn, nobody's perfect.
00:42:05Nobody's completely innocent in this.
00:42:08But I'll tell you when we're done with this play.
00:42:16Oh, that middle.
00:42:18It was closed tight.
00:42:21Chuck Wiley, number 99.
00:42:24The thing about Terry Glynn, though, Craig, is this.
00:42:28That his problems, in the final analysis, stem from the fact that emotionally he's 12.
00:42:34You know, everything is about him.
00:42:36And he thinks that everything that's bad that happens to him is somebody else's fault.
00:42:40Frankly, he's replaced Ryan Leaf as the reigning selfish whiner of the NFL.
00:42:45And that's a tall order.
00:42:51Atlanta coming strong.
00:42:53And Brady takes his seat at the 25.
00:42:57I'll tell you what.
00:42:58You know, if you've got a guy the talent of Terry Glynn on the field,
00:43:01maybe in a situation like this, it would be helpful to a quarterback like Tom Brady.
00:43:06But he's not there.
00:43:07And instead, it's Atlanta's offense that rises up.
00:43:10Now, here's what's going on.
00:43:12Brady goes back to pass.
00:43:13The defense converges around him and sacks him.
00:43:16Now, Michael Vick comes in and leads him to a field goal.
00:43:19Now, they stop him, make him punt from deep in their own territory.
00:43:23And Michael Vick is coming back with nine minutes to go.
00:43:31Ken Walter at his own 10-yard line.
00:43:36Good kick.
00:43:37Turns it over.
00:43:38Gordon pedals back at the 29.
00:43:41Gordon heads to the far sideline and is taken down, dragged down at the 44.
00:43:48Patrick Pass made the tackle.
00:43:5146-yard boot and a 15-yard return.
00:43:57The NFL on CBS is sponsored by Campbell's Chunky, soup that eats like a meal.

00:44:08And by Honda.
00:44:09This holiday, it's gifts that go time on motorcycles and ATVs at your Honda dealer.
00:44:18Welcome back.
00:44:19Georgia Dome.
00:44:21Atlanta with the football.
00:44:23Craig Boerjak, Trevor Maddich in its fine field position.
00:44:27Chandler out.
00:44:28Rib injury.
00:44:29Michael Vick, the rookie, with his second offensive series.
00:44:33On the left-hander.
00:44:34DeLucia.
00:44:35Tucks and runs.
00:44:36Watch out.
00:44:3750.
00:44:38Vick at the 40.
00:44:39Vick at the 30.
00:44:40Vick lunges to the 21-yard line.
00:44:44And, Craig, we said, you asked, what should they do?
00:44:47I said, don't blitz the guy.
00:44:49Keep him in the pocket.
00:44:50Keep everybody else back.
00:44:52What do they do there?
00:44:53They blitz.
00:44:54When the blitz doesn't get him and he takes off running, there's a lot of space back there.
00:44:59Here they come.
00:45:00They're bringing seven guys.
00:45:01And the rest of them are man coverage.
00:45:03So when Vick takes off, those guys are chasing their receivers down the field.
00:45:07This is what Michael Vick was drafted to do.
00:45:1335 yards picked up.
00:45:15The pitch.
00:45:16Maurice Smith.
00:45:17Flags are down.
00:45:19Mo Smith to the 18-yard line.
00:45:21Wrapped up by Brandon Mitchell.
00:45:24As we look at the flag, my question still, though, Trevor, very simple.
00:45:27Can he take that type of beating consistently?
00:45:30He's a 6-footer.
00:45:31He weighs 215.
00:45:33I just wonder how the durability is going to hold up.
00:45:35Well, the answer to that is no.
00:45:36You could put a fire hydrant in there and the fire hydrant wouldn't be able to take a beating.
00:45:40The quarterbacks will take if they stick their head in there.
00:45:43What Vick needs to do is make sure that when his journey is over,
00:45:47when they've got him corralled, that he gets his lovely first-round draft choice,
00:45:52huge bonus quarterback self on the ground or out of bounds.
00:45:56Offense.
00:45:57Number 70.
00:45:5810-yard penalty.
00:45:59Repeat the down.
00:46:00First down.
00:46:01Well, it's looking like the first quarter all over again with that.
00:46:03Dick Hantak was very busy in the first 15 minutes of play with a lot of flags.
00:46:087.59 left here in the Dome in Atlanta.
00:46:12So now first down at 20 at the 31-yard line of Nwingo.
00:46:17Patriots in control after this first quarter.
00:46:21They lead 24-10.
00:46:26Now they're dropping out of there.
00:46:28Vick throws over the middle.
00:46:30Tipped away at the last moment.
00:46:32Good defense.
00:46:33Secondary.
00:46:34Tied along from the left corner.
00:46:37New England learned their lesson.
00:46:38They've got four guys that kept Vick in the pocket.
00:46:41Right now he is least dangerous passing from the pocket
00:46:45because he doesn't yet understand the nuances of reading coverages,
00:46:49and that could have been an interception as Ty Law came in there.
00:46:52Now he thinks he's got a touchdown, but 24 sneaks in.
00:46:55Ty Law, he doesn't have it.
00:46:57But New England needs to keep him where he threw that ball, in the pocket.
00:47:02Ty Law, a pro bowler back in 98.
00:47:04Second down 20.
00:47:07The clock stopped at 747 left.
00:47:11Vick.
00:47:14There he goes.
00:47:15Vick.
00:47:17Still on his feet.
00:47:18Leans to the 16-yard line.
00:47:21It's just amazing to me how much ground he chews up when he starts to run.
00:47:26I mean, there are guys that are fast,
00:47:27and then there are guys that just seem to flow forward
00:47:30at a speed that doesn't seem human.
00:47:3215-yard pickup, and don't be mistaken here.
00:47:35Six-footer, 215, packed with power.
00:47:38He is, and look at the acceleration when he turns it up.
00:47:41The acceleration is what's startling to a defense.
00:47:49Third down.
00:47:52And five.
00:47:53They're coming with the heat.
00:47:55Vick throws and completes.
00:47:59Boy, Vick under the heavy rush of New England.
00:48:02He fell at a very funny angle over Roberto Garza that time.
00:48:06He's okay.
00:48:07That's a good thing.
00:48:08But, boy, it was an odd angle that his body took relative to his lower leg
00:48:13as he went down.
00:48:17Take a look at his legs now.
00:48:19Just watch Michael Vick's legs as he gets hit and goes down.
00:48:22This is going to be a really weird angle right there.
00:48:26That's scary.
00:48:31And they're going for it.
00:48:32Fourth and five.
00:48:34They need to get to the 11-yard line.
00:48:39Vick on the rollout.
00:48:41Left-hander.
00:48:42Oh, he took it in the numbers.
00:48:45A hard shot.
00:48:48Lawyer Malloy.
00:48:51Now, here's why you can blitz down here.
00:48:53You can blitz down here because there's less room for him to run.
00:48:57Defenders are packed in.
00:48:59Huge stop by New England.
00:49:04Big night on CBS.
00:49:05Share a night with America as your favorite stars celebrate the best in television
00:49:09on the Emmy Awards.
00:49:10It's live, including a special performance by Barbara Streisand.
00:49:14Live tonight on CBS.
00:49:21That's Juan Smith trying to use some clock for the 26-yard line.
00:49:25Knocked down by Wiley.
00:49:28All right, here's the question.
00:49:29There's Drew Bledsoe, nine-year pro, Washington State.
00:49:33Number one pick back in 93.
00:49:35Tom Brady, who was a sixth rounder, the seventh quarterback taken in the 2000
00:49:40draft down in Michigan.
00:49:42When this young man or this man gets healthy, there's a situation in New
00:49:46England that Bill Belichick's going to have to address.
00:49:49He's not sure what he's going to do.
00:49:51It's a great problem to have, but it is going to be an interesting problem.
00:49:58Brady, 21 of 30 for 250 and three touchdown throws.
00:50:04Falcons defense.
00:50:07Trying to flex it up front.
00:50:09Not much.
00:50:10Kermie led the way.
00:50:11Well, you talk about the problem that Belichick's going to have in a few weeks
00:50:15when Bledsoe's healthy again.
00:50:16He told us that he doesn't know.
00:50:18I mean, even if Johnny Unitas and John Elway were on his bench, he said he
00:50:22wouldn't know.
00:50:23I'll tell you this.
00:50:24If Johnny Unitas, John Elway, and all five backstreet boys were on the bench,
00:50:27you'd go with the hot hand.
00:50:31The NFL on CBS is sponsored by the Principal Financial Group.
00:50:36We understand what you're working for.
00:50:39And by the United States Marine Corps.
00:50:42The change is forever.
00:50:53Third down and seven.
00:50:56Atlanta coming with some heat.
00:50:57Brady pushed out of the pocket.
00:50:59Oh, he hit from behind.
00:51:02The ball was in motion, and they're going to say incomplete pass.
00:51:07When McBurroughs was there, along with 47, Chris Hudson.
00:51:13Well, I give him credit for trying to make a play, but he sure pays a price here.
00:51:16It's man coverage downfield.
00:51:18Three guys, they bring eight.
00:51:21Whoa, his helmet's off his head just about.
00:51:24But give him credit for courage for trying to deliver this ball,
00:51:27because he knows it's man coverage.
00:51:29If you're a quarterback and get hit hard enough that your chin straps around
00:51:32your nose, you've been hit.
00:51:35Sixth punt of the day for Walter.
00:51:38And it's Gordon back around the 34-yard line.
00:51:42This has been a rough day, hasn't it?
00:51:49High hang time.
00:51:50Gordon knows he's going to take it.
00:51:52Dancers now heads the other way.
00:51:55And is pulled down at the 25-yard line.
00:52:02Thursday on Survivor, even if you've watched every episode,
00:52:05prepare yourself for a whole new game,
00:52:08where the only people more surprised than you will be the Survivors themselves.
00:52:12Don't miss an all-new Survivor, Thursday on CBS.
00:52:20Oh, he's rubbing his nose right now.
00:52:22His chin strap was up there on the last play.
00:52:28Michael Vick still has time, 5.32.
00:52:34Also two timeouts plus the two-minute warning.
00:52:37Oh, he took a shot from the blind side.
00:52:40And bringing the helmet, the pads, the shoes, Otis Smith.
00:52:45That's the exact same blitz that hit Chris Chandler three times the second half
00:52:49and knocked him out of the game.
00:52:51And this time they drill.
00:52:53Michael Vick, he's looking back to his right and bam!
00:52:56Boy, that could be a rip shot right there.
00:52:58Now, I think Atlanta can't leave him exposed like this in the pocket.
00:53:02They've got to roll Michael Vick out, run quarterback draws,
00:53:05get him out of the pocket because he's not going to win this game from the pocket.
00:53:09He's going to win the game by stressing the defense with his legs.
00:53:12Eight sacks today.
00:53:13The team record dates back to 1963 with ten sacks.
00:53:19They've got time to close in on it.
00:53:21Vick's trying to improvise, throws and complete.
00:53:24No.
00:53:25But a flag down at the 20.
00:53:27Yeah, it's down in the holding area.
00:53:29Yeah, holding.
00:53:30But Michael Vick, in his stage of development, he played two years of college football.
00:53:36So he was a sophomore last year, he's a junior this year.
00:53:39You know what?
00:53:40Very few NFL quarterbacks with four years of college football
00:53:43come in their rookie year and understand what they're seeing defenses do in front of them.
00:53:47To win this game today, Michael Vick...
00:53:50The penalty is declined.
00:53:52Third down.
00:53:53Michael Vick cannot be required to be a pocket passer like Chris Chandler.
00:53:57He's got to get out.
00:54:00Now, he gets a little skittish after this throw.
00:54:02He drills the ball and now, see, he's been hit.
00:54:05That huge hit on that corner blitz the last play has gotten to him.
00:54:08They can't let him stand in the pocket.
00:54:12Third down and ten.
00:54:13Pedras with a fine job mixing it up.
00:54:16And right there, another blitz from the corner to Bucky Jones.
00:54:20And I think the chin straps up around the nose again this time.
00:54:23Well, that different reason, though, wasn't from a hit.
00:54:25This was from a face mask penalty on to Bucky Jones.
00:54:28Flag at the 17-yard line.
00:54:31Well, that's an angry referee right there.
00:54:34Yeah, they're going to call that.
00:54:35Bucky Jones came in, reached out and grabbed Vick's face mask for a helmet
00:54:39and drew it up.
00:54:40That's why the chin strap ended up there.
00:54:42But this is the same blitz.
00:54:43Same one.
00:54:44Bam.
00:54:46Wow.
00:54:48All right, look at Roberto Garza, 63, just barely getting a piece of Bucky Jones.
00:54:53Yeah, he doesn't get there.
00:54:54The critical thing there, though, is that Michael Vick,
00:54:57we saw him be really skittish on the passes.
00:55:00Now, he was sandwiched in between two big plays where he got hit hard.
00:55:06Now, that was a penalty.
00:55:07They get a first down.
00:55:08That's fine.
00:55:09But what will it mean to the psyche of a young quarterback?
00:55:17Have to be impressed with the blitz packages, again,
00:55:20that New England has brought today.
00:55:23They have mixed it up.
00:55:24They knocked down Chris Chandler.
00:55:27They have mixed it up.
00:55:28They knocked down Chris Chandler.
00:55:30And now they wanted Vick.
00:55:31They've got Vick.
00:55:32But yet, how can he perform with such heavy rush,
00:55:35with the heavy pressure that New England puts on his face time and time again?
00:55:42He's a pocket passer this time.
00:55:44Mathis on the far side, incomplete.
00:55:46And this time, instead of blitzing, they dropped way back out.
00:55:49Back into a soft cover, too.
00:55:51Seven guys in coverage, four on the pass rush.
00:55:54And Michael Vick is being used as a pure pocket passer.
00:55:57That's good for development, but we're trying to win a football game.
00:56:00And he will win this game with his legs, not his arm.
00:56:03Vick, one of six for 50 yards.
00:56:07And when I say that, when with his legs,
00:56:10I mean getting out of the pocket, forcing the defense to come out of their coverage.
00:56:14Then he can hit receivers.
00:56:20Christian in motion.
00:56:22Christian at the 35.
00:56:25Driving and then tackled out of the 37-yard line.
00:56:28They'll pick up five.
00:56:30Ty Law in the mix all day with another tackle.
00:56:35I'll tell you, Romeo Cornell this time,
00:56:37he only rushed three guys, dropped eight back into coverage.
00:56:40So they're doing everything you can do to a young quarterback.
00:56:42There's Romeo, calling in those signals.
00:56:44He's changed up.
00:56:45He came with a corner blitz,
00:56:47rushed three, dropped seven, or dropped eight,
00:56:49rushed four, dropped seven, and now it's 35.
00:57:04Good coverage.
00:57:05Forced to throw it away.
00:57:07Fourth down.
00:57:09Fourth down.
00:57:104-12 left, two timeouts for the Falcons.
00:57:13And I go for it.
00:57:14And the two-minute warning.
00:57:15I go for it, and they're going to go for it.
00:57:17Very good call by Dan Reeves.
00:57:21But I will be shocked if they don't roll him out of his pocket
00:57:24and give him a pass-run choice,
00:57:26because that's what he did at Virginia Tech.
00:57:29And this man, defensive coordinator Romeo Cornell,
00:57:32of New England, he knows that too.
00:57:370-for-1 today on fourth down conversions.
00:57:402-0-4 on this season.
00:57:43A good cause to watch the emotion.
00:57:45Fourth and five.
00:57:46Again, heavy pressure.
00:57:47Incomplete.
00:57:50And New England will take it on downs.
00:57:53My goodness, Craig.
00:57:54How did he get his long runs earlier
00:57:56when he first came in a relief of Chandler
00:57:58when New England blitzed,
00:58:00and he ran out of there into an empty secondary
00:58:03because everybody was blitzing?
00:58:05Well, here, he drops back.
00:58:07Here comes the blitz again,
00:58:08but he stands in and tries to deliver the ball.
00:58:11You know, Tabucky Jones is unblocked.
00:58:13You know, when they're doing that,
00:58:14if you have a called play
00:58:17to allow him to get away from that blitz
00:58:19before it has time to get there,
00:58:21then he has a chance to run.
00:58:23But if you just have him drop back in the pocket,
00:58:25then it's that result.
00:58:30Tom Brady stays in at quarterback,
00:58:32first and 10,
00:58:34from the Falcon 37-yard line.
00:58:38And the ball goes to Antoine Smith.
00:58:42Crockett made the tackle.
00:58:48Smith, a physical, a back who really,
00:58:51he's been in rhythm today.
00:58:52I mean, he talked about just rhythm.
00:58:5419 carries, 85 yards.
00:58:58It's the 19 carries that matter.
00:59:00Antoine Smith wants 20 carries a game or more.
00:59:03He feels that he is most effective
00:59:05when he can pound and pound and wear down a defense,
00:59:07and his next carry will be his 20th.
00:59:10That's well over a season average of 15 carries
00:59:13and 51 yards.
00:59:18Second down.
00:59:19Smith stopped at the line of scrimmage
00:59:21but lunges for maybe a yard.
00:59:23Chris Draft made the tackle.
00:59:27And the clock runs at 318.
00:59:29Falcons have two timeouts left.
00:59:33And the clock still runs.
00:59:35You know, New England, an interesting story,
00:59:37lost their first two of the season.
00:59:39Trevor to Cincinnati and to the Jets
00:59:41to beat the Colts twice.
00:59:43And San Diego in overtime.
00:59:46Tough loss last week against Denver 31-20.
00:59:50They head back home.
00:59:51I mean, the home schedule, look at this.
00:59:53They can spend the rest of the month in November.
00:59:55They got Buffalo, St. Louis, and New Orleans
00:59:57before they get back to home.
00:59:59Yeah, St. Louis, New Orleans, two very tough teams.
01:00:02Don't discount Buffalo.
01:00:06Well, New England is called timeout, so...
01:00:09You know, we saw a pretty good defense today
01:00:12from New England.
01:00:13And on this date in history,
01:00:15L.A. Rams, Seattle Seahawks.
01:00:17November 4th is 79.
01:00:1922 years ago, in Seattle is where then
01:00:22Los Angeles Rams held Jim Smith.
01:00:25And the Seahawks to an NFL record
01:00:28negative 7 total yards.
01:00:30Rams no doubt won the game
01:00:32by a final of 24 to nothing.
01:00:35Negative 7 yards.
01:00:36You can quarterback sneak every play
01:00:38and get more than negative 7 yards.
01:00:40Total yards today.
01:00:41New England putting up over 340.
01:00:46Brady with 3 touchdown throws.
01:00:48Did you get your answer, Trevor,
01:00:50about his ability to get a touchdown?
01:00:53Did you get your answer, Trevor,
01:00:54about his ability to bounce back
01:00:57off a four-pick fourth quarter last week?
01:00:59Well, I have, but I think Atlanta has, too.
01:01:01They wanted to test him early.
01:01:03And when we talked to him on Saturday, yesterday,
01:01:05he looked out underneath that Boston Red Sox hat
01:01:08under that brim and smiled and said,
01:01:10I like it when they come after me
01:01:12because it gives me a chance to go over the top.
01:01:14And he has done that today.
01:01:17243 left fourth quarter.
01:01:19Third down and five.
01:01:21Again, the pitch.
01:01:25Inside the 25, up around the 23-yard line.
01:01:30Draft, who's been very active for Atlanta,
01:01:33making the tackle on Antoine Smith.
01:01:35And Antoine Smith is really showing me something here.
01:01:37He's running downhill.
01:01:39A lot of speed.
01:01:41Hitting the line and making moves.
01:01:43Usually, he's known as the guy that just pounds into the line,
01:01:46but he's really made a lot of good moves
01:01:48to make tacklers miss in this game.
01:01:51This New England team, as we count down to the two-minute mark,
01:01:54Bill Belichick has really changed things around.
01:01:59A lot of free agents, a lot of new faces.
01:02:03And we hit the two-minute warning.
01:02:07New England 24, Atlanta 10.
01:02:11And a reminder tonight here on CBS 60 Minutes,
01:02:14followed by the 53rd annual Emmy Awards show
01:02:16with a special live performance by Barbra Streisand.
01:02:19I look forward to that.
01:02:20Craig Bullock back along with Trevor Madditch
01:02:22here at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta.
01:02:24Tom Brady, impressive. Three touchdowns, Trevor.
01:02:26Also, New England's defense today,
01:02:28showing different blitz packages
01:02:30and really disturbing not only Chandler,
01:02:32but Michael Vick here in the fourth quarter.
01:02:34And those are the two stories in this game, really.
01:02:36One is defensive coordinator Romeo Cronel
01:02:38making adjustments to his game plan
01:02:40that Atlanta was not prepared for,
01:02:42attacked, knocked Chandler out of the game,
01:02:45and has knocked Michael Vick's confidence for a loop, hitting him.
01:02:48But the bigger story is Tom Brady.
01:02:50Tom Brady, everyone wanted to see,
01:02:53after throwing four interceptions in the fourth quarter
01:02:55against Denver last week, how would he come back?
01:02:58It is easy to play when things are going your way.
01:03:02It is hard when things are not.
01:03:04This is his first opportunity to come back after adversity,
01:03:08and what he has shown us is that he has the resilience
01:03:11to keep focused on what makes him successful
01:03:14and do those things.
01:03:16In this game, he still does not have an interception.
01:03:20And there's Drew Bledsoe, still on the mend,
01:03:22understand throwing.
01:03:24In fact, we saw him throw around about 11.15 this morning
01:03:30and was throwing the ball pretty well.
01:03:32Coming up next, don't forget, Cleveland at Chicago,
01:03:34or you will see the Chiefs taking on Doug Flutie
01:03:37and the San Diego Chargers.
01:03:39Out of bounds at the 11.
01:03:41Well, you know, that four interception performance
01:03:44by Brady in the fourth quarter,
01:03:46two of those were probably his fault,
01:03:48as we see a flag is down now.
01:03:51Or is there?
01:03:52I thought I saw a yellow flash.
01:03:53Yep, there is a flag down.
01:03:58And New England's players are going back,
01:04:00so they're going to have to come back.
01:04:02They're going to have to come back.
01:04:04They're going to have to come back.
01:04:06They're going to have to come back.
01:04:08New England's players are going back,
01:04:10so it'll probably be against the Patriots.
01:04:12But Tom Brady, two of those interceptions.
01:04:15Offense, number 67, 10-yard penalty.
01:04:18Repeat the down.
01:04:20Second down.
01:04:21Two were Brady's fault, two were not.
01:04:23But it's interesting that Drew Bledsoe
01:04:25was the first guy in the locker room
01:04:27to talk to the media after the game,
01:04:29and he stood up for Brady,
01:04:30said that he has confidence in Tom.
01:04:32The team still has confidence in Brady,
01:04:34and it would have been very easy for a veteran,
01:04:36looking at the possibility of a difficult ride
01:04:38to get his own job back when he's healthy,
01:04:40it would have been easy to plant a few little seeds
01:04:42and say something like, you know,
01:04:44a young quarterback, sometimes they flash early
01:04:46and then they don't succeed late.
01:04:48Bledsoe has been in Brady's corner the whole time.
01:04:55Pitch to Smith.
01:04:57Changes direction.
01:04:58Watch it.
01:04:59Antoine Smith roars his pads and bangs to the 11.
01:05:03And that's a first down, and the clock still rolls.
01:05:06Atlanta's got one timeout left.
01:05:10Looks like they're not going to use it.
01:05:15How about that?
01:05:16First 100-yard rusher since the day after Christmas, 1999,
01:05:22and it was Terry Allen who went for 126.
01:05:25Yep.
01:05:26And, you know, Bill Belichick has got to be proud of his guys.
01:05:29You know, Antoine Smith stepping up
01:05:31and giving them a running performance they haven't had in so long,
01:05:34Tom Brady managing the offense,
01:05:36and I'll tell you, I want to go back to Bledsoe,
01:05:38because if you were not a Drew Bledsoe fan before this,
01:05:42the way he has comported himself,
01:05:44you've got to be a Drew Bledsoe fan now.
01:05:47I absolutely respect everything he has done during this Tom Brady run.
01:05:51Trevor, let me ask you this.
01:05:52Why in this league and with fans,
01:05:54why can't two quarterbacks with talent?
01:05:56You know the injury rate in the National Football League
01:06:00with quarterbacks.
01:06:01Flutie and Johnson had the problem in Buffalo.
01:06:03They split.
01:06:04Why can't two talented players coexist?
01:06:07Well, the reason is that the starting quarterback
01:06:09gets about $7 million a year.
01:06:11That's why.
01:06:12And so you want to be the starter.
01:06:14There's too much money involved now.
01:06:16You don't want to sit back and waste your time,
01:06:18and Tom Brady, you know, right now,
01:06:21he got us a controversy,
01:06:22because once again, no matter what,
01:06:24Belichick has got to go with the hot hand.
01:06:29Final seconds tick away here at the Georgia Dome.
01:06:33A big, big road win for New England.
01:06:36They were down 7 to start this game,
01:06:39and they're going to walk out of here with a 24 to 10 win.
01:06:43Three touchdown throws for the second year quarterback
01:06:46out of Michigan, Tom Brady.
01:06:49Michael Vick, I'm sure good things to come
01:06:52for the rookie out of Virginia Tech.
01:06:54It's just a matter of fine tuning.
01:06:56Trevor, what the Falcons,
01:06:58how they're going to try to use him,
01:07:00in what regard?
01:07:01Pocket, roll him out, or improvise?
01:07:03Normally, when they get Michael Vick into games,
01:07:06it's on specific series with a specific play set.
01:07:09He had to come in this game in a situation
01:07:11where he had to run the offense
01:07:13and try to bring the team back.
01:07:15It was a very difficult position to put him in.
01:07:17He got hit hard, but the future looks good.
01:07:20I think three years from now,
01:07:22the Atlanta Falcons will be the most exciting team
01:07:25in the NFL, and it will be because of Michael Vick.
01:07:28Tom Brady is going to make things interesting, too,
01:07:31up north.
01:07:32Yeah, he really is.
01:07:33And once again, Drew Bledsoe,
01:07:35he knows that he's going to have to win his job back
01:07:38in practice.
01:07:39And here's what really turned the tide in this game.
01:07:42Immaculate reception, too?
01:07:44Maybe.
01:07:45It looks like it.
01:07:46And right there, the pass was knocked around,
01:07:49and Troy Brown picked it clean
01:07:51and ran it in for the touchdown.
01:07:53Amazing.
01:07:54Absolutely amazing,
01:07:55and that's just one of the eight receivers that he hit.
01:07:58The ninth receiver is at home, Terry Glenn.
01:08:01Well, New England now evens the record at 4-4.
01:08:05Atlanta drops to 3-4.
01:08:07Game 2 of the doubleheader is coming up next here on CBS.
01:08:11New England, 24, Atlanta, 10.
01:08:14New England, 24, Atlanta, 10.
