00:00:00After 60 Minutes, when Max's students want to pose nude in a magazine, he's all for it.
00:00:05But how will he feel if his daughter decides to join in? Don't miss the education of Max Bickford, tonight, after 60 Minutes on CBS.
00:00:19Well, this crowd did not come here expecting this. After Indianapolis went to 2-0 this year, some people were saying that this team could cruise through the AFC.
00:00:29Offensively, they looked unstoppable. Last two weeks, they've come down to earth, and now they're in jeopardy of losing their third consecutive game.
00:00:36Man, they can't thrust it, and forced to throw it away. Matt Stevens, this time, on a safety blitz, applying the pressure.
00:00:45Right now, the design of the Patriots' defense is designed to really take away the pass routes first.
00:00:51They have a number of people, five defensive backs, and an extra linebacker in coverage, running that cover two defense.
00:00:58And then, they're sending the blitzer a little late, coming after Peyton Manning, giving him a sense of security as he's resting in the pocket.
00:01:05And then, the blitzer's coming a little late, putting pressure on Manning, forcing him to get rid of the ball before he's ready.
00:01:11Now, a second and ten out of the shotgun, it's Manning. His team down 28-3.
00:01:16On a throw to Trevor Inslee. And Inslee, with his third catch of the season, second year out of Nevada, Reno.
00:01:23Forced into action because of injuries to Peyton and Wilkins.
00:01:27And a timeout call. Linus Scrimmage will be the 33. It'll be a first down for Indy when we come back.
00:01:38I want to tell you that for the best NFL coverage on the net, including expert analysis, in-depth team reports,
00:01:44you can go to CBSSportsline.com or AOL keyword CBSSportsline.
00:01:5228-3. New England in front of Indianapolis at the RCA Dome.
00:01:57Patriots 2-8 since last year on the road. Winning games on the road have not been easy.
00:02:03They won in Denver, they won in Buffalo last year.
00:02:06Entering James. Huge gainer for James across midfield. And into New England territory.
00:02:12Got a good block from Ryan Dean. And the clock continues to move. Now a timeout taken.
00:02:19We're five defensive backs in the game now for the Patriots.
00:02:22The Colts are finding some running room with one less defender in the box at the point of attack at the line of Scrimmage.
00:02:29So, the Colts have to be able to take what the Patriots' defense has given them right now.
00:02:34It's a 20-yard run for Edron James. Keep in mind, that is not the official time that you see on the screen.
00:02:39We're trying to keep it as close as possible, and we'll try to update it once we get the official time from the field.
00:02:45But a timeout taken by Indy.
00:02:47Coming up Saturday on the Home Depot, SEC's football. It's one of the all-time great rivalries, Georgia and Florida.
00:02:53Hot-handed, David Green leads the Bulldogs. Heisman hopeful, Rex Grossman looks to get the Gators back on track.
00:03:01It all begins with Tim Brando. Spencer Tillman, college football today.
00:03:07For more college football news, you can go to cbs.sportsline.com, AOL keyword, CBS Sportsline.
00:03:1553 seconds remain. That is the official time until halftime.
00:03:20And a first and ten from the 47 for Indy.
00:03:23What a humbling first half this has been for the Colts.
00:03:26Manning off the play fake. Over the middle, Reggie Wayne, the rookie.
00:03:30And inside the 30-yard line to finally a spring to the Colts' step on the offensive side.
00:03:37Once again, a good sell job by Peyton Manning, faking the play action.
00:03:41Pump fake over to his left, finding Reggie Wayne wide open over the middle of the field.
00:03:46Clock is moving. They elect not to use a timeout.
00:03:48Pump fake, they'll go for it all. Corner locked to the end zone.
00:03:51And over the head of Marvin Harrison, that stops the clock.
00:03:54In a matchup with Ty Law.
00:03:58You might wonder why Manning continues with the pump fake.
00:04:01What he's doing, he's ensuring that his receiver is going to be in one-on-one coverage.
00:04:05It holds the safety. The safety can't get over in time to help on the cornerback.
00:04:09So you know Marvin Harrison is going to be working one-on-one against the cornerback.
00:04:13In this case, it was Ty Law.
00:04:19It'll be second and ten now from the 28.
00:04:23Only 27 seconds remain.
00:04:26And a timeout called by New England.
00:04:29They have two timeouts remaining. Indianapolis has one left.
00:04:34Now Bill Belichick, game plan for Doug Flutie last week, came up with a good plan.
00:04:40Now a game plan for Peyton Manning, and Belichick knows fully well,
00:04:44you can't give them the same look that you gave them three weeks ago.
00:04:48Bill Belichick has had success against Peyton Manning, going back to his jet days as the defensive coordinator.
00:04:54And now the head coach in New England.
00:04:56He's allowing Manning to only complete 60% of his passes.
00:05:00But I think the key is when you get five interceptions, only nine touchdown passes against this defense.
00:05:05Five interceptions, of course two of those were returned for touchdowns in week three when the Patriots play the coach.
00:05:11So, this Patriots defense and Bill Belichick, his design is, I think, intended to not only intercept passes,
00:05:17but to get pressure on him and make big plays against an offense that can really put up some big numbers.
00:05:22And the completion percentage is misleading as well because he'll let him complete those five-yard quick passes to the flat.
00:05:29It's just the big play that he doesn't want Peyton Manning to get through game in, game out.
00:05:35Manning forced to throw it away.
00:05:38And Riddick Parker applied that pressure as Manning rolled to the sideline.
00:05:44And the pressure has been there for New England.
00:05:46That's been a criticism throughout the year for this New England defense, from the outside looking in, that they just don't register enough sacks.
00:05:52Yeah, they come in, they do put some pressure.
00:05:54And I think they're just beating guys at the line of scrimmage.
00:05:57They're coming in, and this is Christian Peter providing the pressure right up the middle.
00:06:02They're coming up, and they're getting some really good play.
00:06:04And it's just a good job right now by the New England Patriots defense.
00:06:09Now a third and ten.
00:06:12From the shotgun, Manning.
00:06:16Protection is there.
00:06:17Manning throws on a cross for Harrison.
00:06:20Shake and bake move and gets out of bounds.
00:06:22Didn't quite get to the marker.
00:06:25And his leg buckled a bit as he came to the sideline.
00:06:30Otis Smith had the cover.
00:06:33Harrison working against Ty Law.
00:06:35I think Harrison may have injured his leg on that first quarter reception.
00:06:40But he's still out there toughing it out, trying to make some plays.
00:06:44But I think he gets caught on the turf a little bit.
00:06:48He's trying his best to try to help his offense get back into this football game.
00:06:51And his one mistake is not keeping an eye on that marker.
00:06:55He did have that little juke move, but he stepped out of bounds just short.
00:06:58And Indianapolis will now settle for the field goal, which has been an adventure so far today.
00:07:07Looks like his right foot got stepped on by Smith inadvertently.
00:07:11This is a 37-yard attempt for Vanderjagt.
00:07:18Wow, this has been a shoddy, sloppy first half for this Indianapolis team.
00:07:25Every side that you can look at.
00:07:27Offense, defense, special teams.
00:07:29And coming in, they said they wanted to improve on execution.
00:07:32In fact, they've gotten worse since last week's game against the Raiders.
00:07:35Something they're going to have to improve on if they're going to try to play some winning football here today and moving forward into the season.
00:07:4242-yard attempt. Vanderjagt has the distance on it and drills it.
00:07:47Well, Mike Vanderjagt cuts into this New England lead, but could they have ever expected this?
00:07:5528-6. Keep in mind as well, Solomon, this is a short week.
00:07:59Indianapolis will be at Kansas City Thursday night.
00:08:03They're going to have to get their act together.
00:08:05They're going to have to improve.
00:08:06And Jim Morrow's going to have to get his team together and get them playing well in all three phases of the game.
00:08:12Because they've played very poorly here in all three phases here in the first half.
00:08:16On special teams, they've made their mistakes.
00:08:18Offense, committed turnovers.
00:08:20And defense has allowed some big plays to occur here in the first half.
00:08:25Coming up tonight on the CBS Sunday movie, One Moment Changed Her Life.
00:08:29This movie will change yours.
00:08:31CBS presents an unprecedented all-star cast in an inspirational true story.
00:08:37Jennifer, tonight on CBS.
00:08:42The other issue also for Indianapolis, Solomon, even though they're down big at the end of the first half,
00:08:49you come into the second half knowing full well they're capable of putting up a lot of points in a hurry.
00:08:55A lot of time left in this football game.
00:08:57The Patriots defense is going to have to be ready because this is a coached offense
00:09:01that can put points on the board in a hurry in a number of different ways.
00:09:06Off the kickoff.
00:09:09On the return.
00:09:11It's David Patton.
00:09:13Patton, zigzagging.
00:09:15And a flag comes down as he goes out of bounds, crossing the 30-yard line.
00:09:18He was chased down by Idrees Bashir, the rookie.
00:09:22As mentioned, a penalty marker, though, in what has been a very tough first half for Jim Moore to stomach.
00:09:32Just full of mistakes on offense and on special teams.
00:09:36You know, I think the coach often...
00:09:39Number 58, during the return, it's a 10-yard penalty.
00:09:43It'll be a first down for New England.
00:09:45The coach's offense has done a good job of moving the ball.
00:09:48They've stalled inside the red zone, having two kicks blocked.
00:09:51But Peyton Manning is doing a good job.
00:09:5315 of 24 today, 222 yards.
00:09:56They just have not been able to get the ball into the end zone.
00:09:59Four seconds remain until halftime.
00:10:01And in the first half of these meetings this year between New England and Indianapolis,
00:10:05the Patriots have outscored the Colts 48-6.
00:10:10It was 20-0 at halftime back on September 30th.
00:10:14Bill Belichick and company with a comfortable lead at the end of the first half, 28-6.
00:10:20The Pats in front, Jim Mann to New York.
00:10:23The next they'll halftime report after these messages at a local station.
00:10:27♪♪♪
00:10:34Halftime at the RCA Dome, 28-6.
00:10:37The Patriots leading the Colts as we welcome you back.
00:10:40Ian Eagle along with Solomon Wilcox.
00:10:42And just another reminder of how quickly things can change in professional sports, any sports for that matter.
00:10:48New England, last week, 10 points down to San Diego.
00:10:52About eight minutes left.
00:10:53They come back, force overtime.
00:10:54They win the game.
00:10:55And now they're one half of football away from evening their mark at 3-3 and feeling pretty good about themselves.
00:11:00Well, they finished last week's game against the San Diego Chargers just on fire.
00:11:04And they carry that over into the first half of this football game.
00:11:0728 of those points were scored on 18 plays.
00:11:10And just getting it done in all phases of the game on offense, defense, and special teams.
00:11:15Blocking two Matt VanderJagt kicks in the first quarter.
00:11:18Indy, you take a look at the problems that they've had the last couple of games.
00:11:22Started the season off at 2-0.
00:11:24Even the mark at 2-2.
00:11:25But everybody just assumed coming in.
00:11:27Well, back at home against a team that they are, quote-unquote, supposed to be.
00:11:31It doesn't happen that way.
00:11:33And everyone wanted to blame the quarterback, Peyton Manning, for throwing those five interceptions in their last two games.
00:11:38But you can clearly see there are other problems and other issues with this Indianapolis Colts football team.
00:11:44The defense has not played well here in the first half.
00:11:47Kevin Faulk on the return.
00:11:49Faulk remaining on his feet.
00:11:52And dropped down to the 30-yard line.
00:11:55Tackle made by Jim Finn for Indianapolis on special teams.
00:11:59A 21-yard return.
00:12:01Quarterback comparison.
00:12:03Peyton Manning, 15 of 24, 222 yards.
00:12:06Pretty good numbers.
00:12:07But look how economical Tom Brady has been.
00:12:107 of 7.
00:12:11And he's got the two touchdowns.
00:12:13That's right. He's been perfect.
00:12:147 for 7.
00:12:15He's also allowed his wide receiver, David Patton, to throw a touchdown past Detroit Brown.
00:12:20So, there's been a number of different players who've gotten it done for the offense of the New England Patriots.
00:12:26Brady on a handoff.
00:12:27Antoine Smith could not bounce off the initial wave of tacklers.
00:12:31Rob Morris, first man there.
00:12:33And it's a gain of only one.
00:12:35New England hasn't had to establish the running game so far today.
00:12:39You wonder if they're able to do it, if Indianapolis is going to have any chance of coming back in this football game in the second half.
00:12:44Well, if you're going to do it, I think first you have to do it with defense.
00:12:47Defense has got to make plays because you can't allow the Patriots to put any more points on the board.
00:12:52And you have to create turnovers to give your offense a short field.
00:12:56So, I think it starts with the coach's defense here in the second half.
00:12:59Draw play.
00:13:00There's an opening.
00:13:02Puts the head down and moves forward.
00:13:05Rob Morris making the tackle again on Antoine Smith.
00:13:08And this time a gain of six.
00:13:10It'll be third down.
00:13:12You know, with so many errors and miscues with the Indianapolis coach in their last two games, I asked Jim Moore,
00:13:17well, where do you start tweaking some things?
00:13:19And you know what?
00:13:20I think you have to start on the defensive side of the ball.
00:13:22And for the last three years, they've been giving up the most points and giving up just too many yards to try to help this offense.
00:13:29We know the offense can put some points on the board, move the football chains.
00:13:33But you know what?
00:13:34You've got to make plays on defense.
00:13:35Now a third and three.
00:13:36Brady dealing with the blitz over the minute.
00:13:40And David Patton couldn't handle it.
00:13:43Idrees Bashir on that safety blitz.
00:13:47A bit delayed, and it leads to the first incomplete pass for Brady today.
00:13:51And I'm still impressed by the poise of Tom Brady.
00:13:54You can see the pressure's coming right here.
00:13:55He delivers this ball right on the money.
00:13:58But David Patton can't hold on to the football.
00:14:00And for a second-year quarterback to stare down the barrel like that under blitz,
00:14:05that pressure, you're still able to complete the pass or at least throw it accurately,
00:14:09I think it says a lot for his poise.
00:14:11Ken Walter, the newest Patriot, will punt it away to Trevor Inslee, standing at his own 20.
00:14:19Walter gets it off.
00:14:20Wobbly punt.
00:14:21Inslee moves forward.
00:14:22Couldn't catch it at the 30.
00:14:24And Inslee able to jump on it and avoid further damage.
00:14:30Line of scrimmage will be the 32.
00:14:34It could have been a lot worse if it took the wrong bounce for Indy.
00:14:38Colts trying to make up some points.
00:14:40Their first possession of the second half when we come back.
00:14:45Indianapolis special teams coach Kevin Spencer chatting with some of his players.
00:14:50It's been a long day for Indy on special teams.
00:14:53Number of miscues, two-block field goal attempts, one fumbled kickoff return,
00:14:57and a fumbled punt return.
00:14:59They didn't turn it over, fortunately for them,
00:15:01and they have the football on a first and 10 at the 32.
00:15:04Edron James turns it inside and comes up just shy of the 40-yard line.
00:15:10That's a seven-yard gain.
00:15:12Solomon, we've talked about the cover two
00:15:14and how New England used it to their advantage in the first matchup against Indy.
00:15:17And the reason why they call it cover two because it's a two-deep zone
00:15:20with the free safety and the strong safety,
00:15:22but the key thing, you want to attack it in the middle of the field,
00:15:25then get a receiver up the sideline,
00:15:27and if you can make the safety make a bad choice in terms of who he's going to defend,
00:15:30you get the ball over to the other side,
00:15:32so you have to attack it up the middle and on the sidelines deep.
00:15:35Another opening for Edron James and a first down for Indy.
00:15:39Back-to-back seven-yard runs for James.
00:15:43Good blocking up front.
00:15:45And it's a good job by the Coats, I think, coming out, showing some patience,
00:15:49trying to get Edron James involved in the running game.
00:15:52He did fumble in the second quarter, so you have to go back to him
00:15:55and begin to allow him to take over this football game
00:15:58and then strike with the play-action pass.
00:16:00Eighteen carries, 73 yards for James so far today.
00:16:05And a first and ten from the 46, Manning.
00:16:07Wolf throw. Reggie Lane is walloped.
00:16:12Brian Cox.
00:16:14It was Cox who set the tone in the first meeting with a hit on Jerome Pathan,
00:16:18and he just sent a message to the young rookie, Wayne.
00:16:21Cox just does a good job of reading the eyes of the quarterback.
00:16:24He knows the crosser's coming, and then he just beelines for the receiver,
00:16:29and Wayne's got to learn to get that ball up the field
00:16:32once he makes the reception create positive yards.
00:16:34On a quick snap, James driving forward across the 45-yard line.
00:16:39He picks up maybe three, depending upon the spot,
00:16:43and Ted Johnson combining with Mitchell to make that tackle.
00:16:46And you might want to ask, what does a hit like that by Brian Cox do to the receivers?
00:16:51In that last game, Jim Morris said that his receivers dropped 11 balls
00:16:56after Jerome Pathan was hit by Cox over the middle of the first play of the game.
00:16:59So the hit by Cox certainly sends a message to the rest of the receivers
00:17:03who will attempt to run across the middle of the field.
00:17:05New set of downs for Indy to work with.
00:17:07Line of scrimmage is now the New England 44.
00:17:09Coulter on the move. Manning throws. Wide open Pollard.
00:17:13Pollard breaking tackles and finally brought down to the 20-yard line.
00:17:19Mike Vrabel with a stick. That's a 24-yard pass and catch.
00:17:24And the Colts doing a good job. This is Pollard. He's working the middle of the field.
00:17:28We talked about against that cover, too.
00:17:30You see the safeties to Bucky Jones and Lawyer Malloy.
00:17:33They're back deep, but you have to get the ball over the middle of the field.
00:17:37If they're going to hang on the sidelines, you've got to hit the pass right over the middle of the field.
00:17:40Colts go to the line quickly again.
00:17:42Handoff. James working the left side and scooting forward across the 15-yard line.
00:17:48A 7-yard gain now for James and a 2nd and 3 for Indy.
00:17:53Colts doing a good job of putting together some rhythm and tempo in the offense.
00:17:57Mixing in run and pass. Finding some soft spots in the Patriots' defense.
00:18:02But they're going to have to do a better job down in the red zone.
00:18:04That's where they're at now. Haven't been successful down here all day.
00:18:072nd and 3 from the 14.
00:18:12James trying to cut it to the outside and breaks a tackle.
00:18:15James down to the 5-yard line.
00:18:20He made Vrabel miss and then Ty Law had his problems.
00:18:24Give James 8 yards on the rush.
00:18:26You want to know what makes Edron James so good is not just he has the vision
00:18:30to see that he has to take this ball outside as Vrabel gets hooked by it,
00:18:34but watch him make a really good tackler, Ty Law, miss in the open field.
00:18:38The good backs have a way of doing that.
00:18:40A 1st and goal just outside the 5-yard line.
00:18:43Manning to James up the middle.
00:18:45Tries to hit the hole and then brought down after a couple.
00:18:48Ted Johnson, 1st man there.
00:18:51Many of the Patriots told us they thought the coach,
00:18:54the middle part of that offensive line was the weakest part of their football team.
00:18:58And that's where I think Indianapolis has to do a really good job of creating,
00:19:02I think, more of a physical presence in the running game.
00:19:05When you get down into the red zone,
00:19:06you're going to have to really be able to power the ball into the end zone.
00:19:09And sometimes you have to do it going directly right at the goal line
00:19:13instead of trying to bounce it outside and run around the edges.
00:19:16Backup center, Rick DeMulling has checked in.
00:19:18He is eligible as a tight end.
00:19:21James is thrown in backwards.
00:19:24Edrin James took a stick from Lawyer Molloy.
00:19:29Lawyer Molloy and the other safety to Bucky Jones.
00:19:33They're coming right up the middle of that defense,
00:19:35and this is where the coach's offensive line has to do a much better job
00:19:38of creating a new line of scrimmage on the other side of the ball.
00:19:42They just all get pushed back.
00:19:43Ted Johnson coming in, as well as Brian Cox, Lawyer Molloy to Bucky Jones,
00:19:47all sending Edrin James heading backwards.
00:19:50And now a third and goal.
00:19:52New England came up big earlier defensively.
00:19:55Same scenario with a first, second, and goal inside the five.
00:20:00They held them and then blocked the kick.
00:20:02This is a third and goal.
00:20:03Play clock is winding down.
00:20:05Manning, timing pattern to the end zone.
00:20:07Caught by Harrison.
00:20:09Touchdown Indians.
00:20:12And I can't tell you what a beautiful pass this is from Peyton Manning
00:20:16and what a wonderful catch and adjustment Marvin Harrison makes
00:20:20in order to bring down this pass.
00:20:22This ball is thrown right over the top of his head,
00:20:25and he won't even see the football.
00:20:27He's widening.
00:20:28That ball's coming right over the top of his head,
00:20:30and, look, he just creates a good position to be able to haul that ball in
00:20:34because it's really good coverage by Ty Law.
00:20:36They're going to go for two.
00:20:39Because of the disparity,
00:20:40they recognize that they just can't get it back with three touchdowns.
00:20:45The question becomes, do you go for two early or go for two late?
00:20:48You go early, and now you try to lessen your margin of error later on.
00:20:54Another shotgun.
00:20:55Two-point conversion.
00:20:57Fake the inside handoff.
00:20:58Manning will throw it to the end zone.
00:21:00It's caught.
00:21:01Helmet comes off of Ken Dilger.
00:21:06And the Colts have eight points to show for this possession.
00:21:13Indianapolis certainly not done yet.
00:21:1728-14 New England in the third.
00:21:24After the ten-play, 68-yard drive by the Colts,
00:21:27Hunter Smith will kick it off.
00:21:29Kevin Falk standing in his own five.
00:21:33Falk moves forward and catches at the 11.
00:21:36Middle of the field, Falk in heavy traffic and now pushed backwards.
00:21:41He couldn't quite get to the 30,
00:21:43and now this Indianapolis team showing some emotion and the fans joining in.
00:21:4819-yard return.
00:21:5028-14, Pats.
00:21:56Fans are finally getting into it with New England in front, 28-14.
00:22:00And, yes, they are asking the defense to make some stops here
00:22:04to get that high-powered offense back on the field.
00:22:09First and ten from the 30, a five-receiver set.
00:22:12They spread the field.
00:22:13Brady, quick throw, and complete.
00:22:16Out across the 35-yard line, David Patton with an eight-yard gain.
00:22:21Chad Cota with the stick.
00:22:28Well, in the third quarter, New England has had its problems so far this season.
00:22:33We only averaged 2.4 yards per rush in the third quarter.
00:22:37That's a big problem because, you know what?
00:22:39You're forced to pass the football, and it stops the clock,
00:22:42allowing the other team more time to get back into the football game.
00:22:45They have to be able to run the ball here very well
00:22:48in order, I think, to control the football game and to control the clock.
00:22:52Brady is now dealing with a loud crowd up the middle.
00:22:55First down and more.
00:22:56Antoine Smith busting it to the outside.
00:22:59Into indie territory, and this crowd quiets in a hurry.
00:23:03Mike Compton with a huge block up front.
00:23:05And Antoine Smith is feeling me.
00:23:07See, I told him to run the football, and he comes out, and he responds.
00:23:11But you have to give credit to the offensive line
00:23:13running behind this fullback, Mark Edwards,
00:23:15doing a good job on Mike Peterson, number 52.
00:23:18And Antoine's just running the daylight here,
00:23:20ready to avoid the tackler.
00:23:23Doing a good job.
00:23:24Stiff arm to the safety of Drees Bashir,
00:23:26but good job of the Patriots running it.
00:23:28He just ripped off 19 yards on the ground.
00:23:31Edwards, the motion man, movement.
00:23:33And flags come sailing down.
00:23:35Matt Light on that left side.
00:23:37Did he jump first?
00:23:39That's the question.
00:23:44We saw Indianapolis jump across the line.
00:23:49Encroachment.
00:23:50Number 92 defense.
00:23:52It's a five-yard penalty.
00:23:53Remains first down.
00:23:55And it was that matchup, Chad Bratzke against Matt Light.
00:24:01Keep an eye on the left tackle.
00:24:03Matt Light right there, number 72.
00:24:05Let's see if he moves.
00:24:07Can't even flinch.
00:24:08And there you see, little movement.
00:24:11Bratzke, that's what they're taught.
00:24:13If the offensive line moves,
00:24:14then you have to go ahead and cross the line to scrimmage.
00:24:18New England just benefited.
00:24:19On the give.
00:24:21Antoine Smith trying to dive forward.
00:24:24That's a lot of running there for just one yard.
00:24:28Smith was contained last week by the San Diego defense.
00:24:33Held to 36 yards on 15 carries.
00:24:35He didn't rush for a touchdown, which he's done in three straight games.
00:24:38And he earned that touchdown last week against the San Diego defense.
00:24:41He really did.
00:24:42He was hit by Junior Seau.
00:24:43Showed great second effort,
00:24:45but he had his best game of the season in week three
00:24:47against this Indianapolis Colts defense.
00:24:5094 yards rushing in that game and two touchdowns,
00:24:52his best game of the season.
00:24:54Now a second and four.
00:24:55Give it to Smith again.
00:24:56This time slices through a hole.
00:24:58And Smith upended at the 25-yard line.
00:25:03Earlier, it was Compton, the left guard, with a key block.
00:25:05This time, Joe Andrews, a 12-yard scamper.
00:25:10And Antoine Smith, he's the back that the Patriots are looking for right now.
00:25:14He's the guy that's getting the opportunity to run in this offense,
00:25:17but they've been struggling since the departure of Curtis Martin.
00:25:21You know, Martin and a number of other backs have come through it.
00:25:24Now Antoine Smith is being given an opportunity to try to fill the void
00:25:28that hasn't been seen since Curtis Martin.
00:25:30Robert Edwards, of course, wrestled a thousand yards in history.
00:25:33Smith to the sideline, inside handoff, Mark Edwards,
00:25:36and it fooled no one,
00:25:38including Johnson and Williams combining up the middle.
00:25:43That's a loss of one on the play.
00:25:48Now New England running backs had it going with Curtis Martin,
00:25:52but it's been a downhill slope,
00:25:55including Edwards at a terrible end to his career
00:25:58in an NFL-sanctioned rookie event in Hawaii.
00:26:01From 11-5 to 5-11, he relates with the lack of rushing yards,
00:26:06and he needs some semblance of a running game
00:26:08to go along with a really good passing game.
00:26:10Play action, Brady takes it to far,
00:26:12throw to the sideline, and into double coverage.
00:26:16Brown could not break free.
00:26:18Chad Bratzke got into the pocket to give Brady something to think about,
00:26:23and now Jeff Burris is lying on his back.
00:26:28Burris slow to get up.
00:26:30Idrees Bashir trying to shake it off as well.
00:26:33Both come out limping following the collision.
00:26:35And that time you mentioned Chad Bratzke.
00:26:37Ellis Johnson, number 62, also there to put pressure on Brady,
00:26:41but Brady's still poised.
00:26:42He knows they're coming.
00:26:43He takes a hit.
00:26:45He's able to get this ball out of the field of play.
00:26:49Right now it's just over on the sideline going for Troy Brown,
00:26:52but he does a good job of getting the ball to only where his guy can catch it.
00:26:56He doesn't commit too many turnovers.
00:26:58He really makes good decisions under pressure
00:27:02as they're taking a look at Coach Defender who's injured on the play.
00:27:06Jeff Burris remaining on his back.
00:27:08He tried to walk it off.
00:27:10He'll step aside here in the third.
00:27:16New England 28, Indianapolis 14, third quarter, 444 to go.
00:27:22Jeff Burris was able to walk off the field.
00:27:24He's replaced by another former Bill Thomas Smith.
00:27:27Clifton Crosby in a corner as well.
00:27:31A 3rd and 11 faces New England.
00:27:33Brady hit as he throws.
00:27:34Almost picked off.
00:27:36Crosby had an opportunity,
00:27:38and Brady still has not thrown an NFL pick.
00:27:42It's fourth down.
00:27:44Crosby had a huge opportunity.
00:27:46The coach were providing pressure.
00:27:48They're starting to come after Brady,
00:27:49and this is one that gets away from him.
00:27:52Nice hit by Ellis Johnson,
00:27:53but this ball sails high over the head of David Patton,
00:27:56and Crosby has a chance to intercept that pass,
00:27:58a pass he's got to make.
00:28:00We talked about the coach defense
00:28:02needing to make some turnovers and make some plays
00:28:04to get the ball back to their offense.
00:28:07This will be a 43-yard attempt for Vinatieri.
00:28:11He's had a lot of success kicking indoors.
00:28:13Vinatieri leans in and puts it through.
00:28:18Adam Vinatieri adding to New England's lead.
00:28:22Indianapolis scores a touchdown.
00:28:24New England answers with a field goal, 31 to 14.
00:28:30Peyton Manning pacing the sidelines,
00:28:32waiting for his chance to come back onto the field
00:28:34and try to cut into the New England lead.
00:28:37Adam Vinatieri now 10 of 10 on field goal attempts
00:28:40in his career at the RCA Dome,
00:28:42and he kicks it off for the Pats.
00:28:44Dominique Rhoades from the two.
00:28:46Rhoades with a head of steam,
00:28:48and Rhoades is gobbled up at the 30.
00:28:51Matt Stephens involved in the stop,
00:28:53a 28-yard return.
00:28:55Our NFL.com poll question this week,
00:28:57it's a good one.
00:28:58Your team has two minutes left, 80 yards to go,
00:29:00no timeouts, you're down by four.
00:29:02Which quarterback do you want leading your team?
00:29:05Obviously the question is not at this moment.
00:29:08We're not saying Joe Montana now.
00:29:10We're saying Montana in his prime.
00:29:12I'll take Joe Montana today, tomorrow, and forever.
00:29:15He took a Super Bowl from me.
00:29:17Super Bowl XXIII down in Miami,
00:29:19so Joe Montana gets my vote at any point in history.
00:29:22You still have John Taylor nightmares on occasion.
00:29:24Every now and then.
00:29:25You can cast your vote at NFL.com.
00:29:27On a first and ten, Manning,
00:29:29throwing, wobbly catch,
00:29:31wide open Harrison,
00:29:32and again, buckles as he hits the turf.
00:29:35He went down awkwardly at the 36-yard line.
00:29:39Well, it did not look good,
00:29:41but excellent catch by Marvin Harrison,
00:29:43working over the middle of the field,
00:29:45and that's where most of the big plays have come
00:29:48for this Indianapolis coach's defense.
00:29:50Of course, Harrison caught a big strike
00:29:52up the sideline from Manning,
00:29:54but it looks like it may be a hamstring
00:29:56or a knee that appears to be okay.
00:29:59He wants to stay in the game.
00:30:0234 yards for Harrison.
00:30:07His sixth catch, 130 yards overall,
00:30:10and he has a touch,
00:30:11and there's the buckle, the right foot.
00:30:13Matt Stevens is on the play,
00:30:15and he cuts underneath Matt Stevens.
00:30:17His back is to the play,
00:30:19but right now, you see the concern of Peyton Manning,
00:30:22the concern he has for his wife,
00:30:24and she's with Marvin Harrison.
00:30:25The reaction from Manning,
00:30:26as we showed you the replay after Harrison went down.
00:30:29On a handoff.
00:30:31Andrew James continues to the outside,
00:30:34and he strung it out for a gain of eight.
00:30:38Trevor Inslee, who came in for Harrison,
00:30:40actually supplied a block out on the perimeter.
00:30:43It was a good block by everyone on the right side,
00:30:45including Inslee, who held up Ty Law.
00:30:48Ty Law talked to us yesterday
00:30:49about his desire to be a complete cornerback
00:30:53and come up and tackle well.
00:30:54He wants to cover as well as make blitzes,
00:30:57but right now, Andrew James doing a really good job
00:30:59with creating some room in the running game.
00:31:01And Harrison is back in there for Indy.
00:31:03James puts the helmet down and gains three.
00:31:07So they'll move the chains out to the 25-yard line.
00:31:11Brandon Mitchell with the stop.
00:31:12James has gone over 100 yards
00:31:14for the fourth time in five games this year,
00:31:18and for the 23rd time in 37 career NFL games.
00:31:22An improvement from his week three performance
00:31:24against the St. Patriots defense.
00:31:27First and 10, play fake.
00:31:29Misdirection going to the other side of the field.
00:31:32Coming back is Reggie Wayne.
00:31:34And Otis Smith with the man-to-man coverage.
00:31:39Fans here wanted to see pass interference.
00:31:41And it's a good thing Reggie Wayne has the, I think,
00:31:44knowledge and understanding
00:31:45that you have to come back to this ball.
00:31:47Look at Otis Smith. He's cheating.
00:31:49Looking back, he sees the release by Manning.
00:31:51He's breaking underneath.
00:31:52And look at Reggie Wayne.
00:31:53He comes back and fights for inside position.
00:31:56I think he prevents that ball from being intercepted
00:31:58because Otis Smith intercepts that ball.
00:32:00He's going to write it back for a touchdown.
00:32:02No penalty warranted on that play.
00:32:04He had as much of a right to the football
00:32:06as Reggie Wayne did.
00:32:07Absolutely.
00:32:08Talking like a former defensive back now.
00:32:11Manning throwing to the near sideline.
00:32:14And Harrison brings it in.
00:32:16Marvin Harrison is putting up huge numbers.
00:32:20It'll be a nine-yard game, maybe ten.
00:32:22Let's see where they spot the football.
00:32:24It appears to be just a bit short.
00:32:31And they're working the ball on the sidelines
00:32:33on two consecutive pass plays.
00:32:35One over to the left, over to Reggie Wayne.
00:32:38Now they come back to the right to Marvin Harrison.
00:32:41They're doing a good job of spreading the ball around
00:32:43and mixing it in with running backs.
00:32:45Now a third and short.
00:32:46James has the first down
00:32:48and carries a tackle or two with him
00:32:50for a gain of four up the middle.
00:32:54This is the Indianapolis offense
00:32:56that we expected to see throughout.
00:32:59When you look back on it in the first half,
00:33:01they did move the football.
00:33:02That really isn't the question.
00:33:04They just couldn't cash in during key moments.
00:33:06They struggled inside of the red zone
00:33:08where they find themselves once again.
00:33:10Let's see if they can get it in.
00:33:11Using the running game, it's a pass as well.
00:33:13It's James trying to bounce to the outside.
00:33:17And James is spilled out.
00:33:19Out towards the sideline, but he picked up six.
00:33:22With a normal running back,
00:33:24that play might go for no gain or a loss.
00:33:27He turns it into a six-yard positive play.
00:33:30And the reason why is because he stretches the defense.
00:33:32He's going to bounce it outside.
00:33:34He's just looking for room to run.
00:33:35But once he makes up his mind,
00:33:36he turns this ball up and he turns up with authority
00:33:39looking to run over whoever's in his way.
00:33:41But that's one thing that he does very well.
00:33:44Once he gets headed upfield, he does it with power.
00:33:46Now a second and four inside the ten.
00:33:48Manning throw, deflected and incomplete
00:33:52off of the body of Marvin Harrison.
00:33:55And that's one of those bounces,
00:33:56depending upon where the defensive players are situated,
00:34:00it could go the other way.
00:34:01This is where the offense has gotten into trouble
00:34:03because he's throwing this right into the heart of the defense.
00:34:05As you can see, the linebacker Ted Johnson coming over.
00:34:08So the ball was thrown a little behind Harrison on purpose
00:34:11because Johnson was coming so fast inside
00:34:14and could have intercepted the ball
00:34:16had it not been behind Harrison.
00:34:17But they're aggressive in this offense at jamming that ball in there.
00:34:21Ninth play of the drive.
00:34:22They can still get a first down.
00:34:24It's a third and four.
00:34:25Manning, long count.
00:34:27Fakes the handoff.
00:34:28Manning, floater up top over the head of Pollard.
00:34:31Incomplete.
00:34:35And the Indianapolis Colts have to settle for three.
00:34:39This one has gotten away from Manning
00:34:41because he had Pollard wide open.
00:34:43Manning's not too happy.
00:34:44Could have put a little bit more touch on that ball
00:34:46and dropped it over the defense
00:34:48right into the hands of Marcus Pollard,
00:34:50who's a big tight end.
00:34:51Manning's not happy with himself right now
00:34:53because he had him wide open just over the head of Ryan Cox.
00:34:56There was room to drop that ball in there,
00:34:58but he threw it on a straight line
00:35:00with more velocity than he needed.
00:35:02Fans here wanted Jim Maher to go for it.
00:35:04He says, no way.
00:35:05Vanderjagt, 24-yard attempt.
00:35:08He connects.
00:35:11So after scoring the touchdown earlier in the quarter,
00:35:14New England came back with a field goal,
00:35:16and Indianapolis has a field goal of its own.
00:35:18It's 31 to 17.
00:35:20New England in front late in the third quarter.
00:35:26Coming up next Sunday,
00:35:27the NFL on CBS is back with doubleheader excitement.
00:35:30First, Mark Brunell tries to spark the Jaguars
00:35:32against Ray Lewis and the Ravens.
00:35:34And then Rich Cannon and the Raiders
00:35:36take on Donovan McNabb and the Eagles.
00:35:38Or the Dolphins meet the Seahawks.

00:35:52AOL keyword, NFL.com.
00:35:56A couple games last year,
00:35:58Indianapolis fell behind in against NFC foes,
00:36:02Chicago and Green Bay, two games that stick out.
00:36:06They fell behind.
00:36:07They did forge a comeback late, only to fall short.
00:36:10And this game is beginning to get that similar feel
00:36:13where they were able to get their act together
00:36:15in the second half and at least try to rally.
00:36:17Well, the unfortunate thing for the Colts
00:36:19is that their offense has to be perfect
00:36:21in order for them to have any chance
00:36:23of winning football games.
00:36:24The defense put them in a hole,
00:36:26as well as the special teams,
00:36:27and they're constantly looking for eight manning
00:36:29to bail them out.
00:36:30Well, they're going to have to improve their play
00:36:31in other phases of the game
00:36:33in order for this football team,
00:36:34I think, to be a consistent winner.
00:36:36Hunter Smith on the kickoff.
00:36:39Kevin Falk, a short kick,
00:36:41and Falk will take it from the 15.
00:36:43Falk has an opening,
00:36:45spinning his way across the 35
00:36:47and brought down at the 38-yard line
00:36:49by Jermaine Hampton.
00:36:51It's a 23-yard return for Falk.
00:36:54Harrison was getting stretched out on the sideline.
00:36:57His numbers right now, seven catches,
00:36:59139 yards and a touchdown,
00:37:01but they did not get the touchdown
00:37:04that they were looking for on that drive.
00:37:06They settled for the 24-yard field goal
00:37:08from VanderJagt.
00:37:09And it's more of the same for the Colts,
00:37:10the inability to punch it in in the red zone,
00:37:13but Patriots got a start at their 38-yard line,
00:37:17and that's a chance.
00:37:19Really, I think that's good field position,
00:37:21something that Bill Belichick wanted,
00:37:23so the special teams and the Colts
00:37:24could have done a better job.
00:37:26Throwing on first down, Brady finds Patton again.
00:37:30That seam that they continue to look for,
00:37:34and Brady continues to find it,
00:37:36an 11-yard gain, a first down for New England.
00:37:39And the Colts are trying to blitz Tom Brady,
00:37:41trying to rattle with the young quarterback
00:37:43and put some pressure on him,
00:37:45but he's doing a good job of standing in the pocket
00:37:47and delivering the ball accurately to his receivers,
00:37:50and so you have to wonder
00:37:51if the Colts will continue to come after him
00:37:53or if they'll just lay back and play coverage
00:37:55because he's responded well in both cases so far here today.
00:37:59Line of scrimmage is the 49.
00:38:01Patton, two catches, 104 yards.
00:38:03Troy Brown, six catches, 105 yards,
00:38:06each with a touchdown.
00:38:08Underneath again, this time Brown, shake and bake.
00:38:11He faked them out.
00:38:12David Macklin may have broken his ankles after that juke move,
00:38:18and Troy Brown creating after the catch.
00:38:21It may be enough for a first down.
00:38:24Tom Brady has playmakers in Troy Brown and David Patton.
00:38:27You can see the nice move by Troy Brown on David Macklin,
00:38:31able to pick up additional yards and pick up the first down,
00:38:34but a play like that is really designed to substitute a play in the running game
00:38:38because it's so easy to get the ball into the receiver's hand
00:38:41just on the hitch route,
00:38:42and then he's able to pick up additional yards.
00:38:44It works just like a run play if you're trying to move the chain.
00:38:47See the clock rolling?
00:38:49Tail end of the third quarter,
00:38:51and that will do it.
00:38:54Fourth quarter action is coming up.
00:38:56New England 31, Indianapolis 17.
00:38:59We'll come back to the RCA Dome after these messages
00:39:02and a word from your local station.
00:39:04You're watching the NFL on CBS.
00:39:09Ian Eagle, Solomon Wilcox, our entire CBS crew with you
00:39:12from Indianapolis, New England 31.
00:39:15The Colts 17 as we start play in the fourth quarter.
00:39:20Brady.
00:39:22Look at the protection.
00:39:23Brady floats it upstairs.
00:39:24He's got a man.
00:39:25Flag down.
00:39:27Troy Brown and a matchup with Macklin.
00:39:31And two flags come in on the play.
00:39:35This ball was just a floater.
00:39:37Macklin loses his timing in terms of trying to defend this pass
00:39:41because he's just hanging up there.
00:39:43He's got to play the ball much better.
00:39:45That's why they throw the flag on him.
00:39:47He makes contact with the receiver before the ball arrives.
00:39:52Pass interference, number 27 defense.
00:39:55That's a first down at the three-yard line.
00:40:01Long afternoon for Macklin.
00:40:03Macklin's got to find the ball.
00:40:04His head is not getting turned around,
00:40:06and by the time he turns his head around,
00:40:08he runs right into the back of the receiver.
00:40:13Now Brian Cox reports in as eligible.
00:40:16A 38-yard penalty.
00:40:19Well, watch how Brady hangs in there.
00:40:21He's buying time, and he knows he's going to get hit,
00:40:23but he's able to buy extra time,
00:40:25and he ends up throwing that ball, finishing the play, standing on his feet.
00:40:29Macklin just has to do a better job of playing the ball in the air.
00:40:32Hot first and goal.
00:40:33Trying to string it to the outside.
00:40:35Look at the pursuit.
00:40:36Smith, first to the sideline.
00:40:39Jeff Burris among those there to make sure Smith wasn't getting in for six.
00:40:44Well, also with Brady giving credit, while the pass didn't look pretty,
00:40:47he did throw that off his back foot,
00:40:49so he put enough mustard at least on it to get it near the goal line.
00:40:52When you throw the ball off the back foot, it's going to sail high on you,
00:40:55and that's what happened on that play,
00:40:57and I think Macklin was expecting the ball to come in on a better trajectory
00:41:00and come in much sooner, but threw off his timing.
00:41:03But he's got to do a better job defensively of finding the ball in the air,
00:41:07and then once the ball is in the air, you have to play the ball,
00:41:10try to get the interception or bat it down.
00:41:12Loss of three for Smith.
00:41:14Second and goal from the six.
00:41:16Play fake.
00:41:17Brady over the middle.
00:41:18Touchdown.
00:41:21Leaping grab by David Patton.
00:41:24And New England, an offensive juggernaut here today at the RCA Dome.
00:41:31It's a juggernaut because of the decisions
00:41:33and ability of the quarterback, Tom Brady,
00:41:35but then David Patton making an excellent grab.
00:41:38This is a play action.
00:41:39He'll just get inside of David Macklin,
00:41:41and now he'll just screen him off from the football, use his hands,
00:41:44not the body, to pull this ball in.
00:41:46Macklin doesn't have a chance because Patton goes up for that ball,
00:41:49securing it with his hands,
00:41:51and they will be tucking away before Macklin has a chance to make a play.
00:41:54That pass on time and exactly where it had to be.
00:41:58Brady.
00:42:00Three touchdowns.
00:42:0111 of 14, throwing the football 170 yards,
00:42:05and more importantly for the Patriots,
00:42:08a 38-17 advantage.
00:42:11♪♪♪
00:42:19Four play, 63-yard drive, two minutes and 29 seconds off the clock.
00:42:23The big play actually was the pass interference.
00:42:26It was called down at the three, and Vinatieri kicks it off.
00:42:30Dominique Rhodes from the four.
00:42:33Rhodes couldn't handle that initial wave,
00:42:37and he's driven down at the 24-yard line.
00:42:40Larry Izzo involved in the stop.
00:42:44Coming up, following our coverage here today,
00:42:47the Subway postgame show.
00:42:49Our crew back in New York will get you caught up with all the scores and highlights
00:42:54and the big news happening around the NFL on the Subway postgame show.
00:42:58That's coming up after the Colts and Patriots.
00:43:01We talked about ways that the Colts could get back into this football game
00:43:04if they're going to come back,
00:43:06and they said they had to get it done on defense.
00:43:08So far they've given up ten points in the second half.
00:43:10It doesn't bode well for the offense or for the Indianapolis Colts as a team.
00:43:14Edron James makes a tackler miss
00:43:18and then emerges out across the secondary down to the 42.
00:43:23That's a 17-yard run for James.
00:43:28Indianapolis' defense, they had to come up big, and they did not.
00:43:34They haven't done a good job of putting pressure on Tom Brady,
00:43:37and they haven't done a good job in coverage.
00:43:39In the third quarter, they even allowed Antoine Smith to create some room
00:43:42in the running game and keep the chains moving.
00:43:44Manning underneath.
00:43:46Harrison creating after the catch and then forced out of bounds
00:43:49right at the 40-yard line by Ty Long.
00:43:52Marvin Harrison has gone over 100 yards for the 23rd time in his career,
00:43:57and Harrison and James going over 100 together for the 13th time.
00:44:03This is where the Patriots have to keep the pressure on,
00:44:06continue to play tight coverage and try to put some pressure on Peyton Manning,
00:44:10much in the same way they did in the first half.
00:44:13James.
00:44:16Look at the patience of James.
00:44:17It looks initially like he's going to run in between tackles
00:44:21or at least out-off tackle and then cuts it to the outside.
00:44:24The Patriots' defense has to maintain its intensity.
00:44:27They've done a good job for most of the game,
00:44:30really stretching those run plays and sending it out to the sidelines.
00:44:33Romeo Cornell looking at his defense saying,
00:44:35Hey, guys, let's keep our intensity.
00:44:37We can't let up on this offense.
00:44:39This offense for the coach can put points on the board in bunches,
00:44:42so you have to maintain your intensity for a complete four quarters
00:44:46throughout the football game.
00:44:47Six yards for James.
00:44:48Manning can't handle the snap and forced to pounce on it at the 35-yard line.
00:44:56So a loss of one on the play.
00:45:00And the clock is moving.
00:45:04Manning just doesn't secure the snap.
00:45:07He had a chance.
00:45:08It was in his hands.
00:45:09He just bobbled it after he started to pull away from the center.
00:45:12Jeff Satterthwaite, he has to do a good job of riding that center
00:45:15and holding on to the football.
00:45:17Now a third and five.
00:45:18Patriots were asking for a timeout.
00:45:22And they get one.
00:45:24First time they've used a timeout of the second half.
00:45:26Belichick didn't like something on that defensive alignment
00:45:29in the matchup with Indy.
00:45:31We'll step aside for a moment, come back after this.
00:45:38Patriots lead the all-time series over Indianapolis with a mark of 38-24.
00:45:44They have won nine of the last 11 meetings against the Colts.
00:45:48One thing working against the Pats, though, heading into action today,
00:45:52is what they've done on the road of late.
00:45:54They've dropped six of their last seven away from Foxborough.
00:45:58Out of the shotgun.
00:45:59Manning on a handoff, third and five.
00:46:02Edrin James waits for the hole to emerge
00:46:05and takes advantage of it with a gain of six.
00:46:08New set of downs for Indianapolis.
00:46:10At that time, the Colts' offensive line came off with tremendous power,
00:46:14pushing the Patriots' defense back,
00:46:16and Edrin James able to find room to run inside,
00:46:19something he hasn't had pretty much of this day.
00:46:24Out of 12 minutes left in the fourth.
00:46:2638-17 New England.
00:46:28Patriots trying to get to the 500 mark.
00:46:30Thrown into some traffic.
00:46:33Marcus Pollard brings it in cleanly
00:46:35and brought down at the 11-yard line.
00:46:3919 yards on the pass play.
00:46:42Laura Malloy with a tackle.
00:46:44Once again, the play-action pass.
00:46:46So you know they're going to throw the ball over the middle
00:46:49and that time to get it to the big tight end, Marcus Pollard.
00:46:51And again, there is no huddle.
00:46:53Manning has been barking out the instructions.
00:46:56And now checking off.
00:46:58Tarik Glenn.
00:47:00He jumped very quickly as Manning began to look towards his right to make a change.
00:47:09False start.
00:47:11Number 78 offense.
00:47:12It's a five-yard penalty.
00:47:14Remains first down.
00:47:15And it leads to the question, Solomon, the no huddle.
00:47:17That's a theme that we came in talking about.
00:47:20Does it work?
00:47:21Sometimes to their disadvantage.
00:47:22Not everybody's on the same page.
00:47:24Sometimes there is miscommunication.
00:47:26You have less time to process information.
00:47:28And I think it creates more confusion for the offense.
00:47:31Sometimes for the defense as well.
00:47:33But this time you can see some of the offensive players are confused.
00:47:36Now a first and 15.
00:47:37Manning steps up.
00:47:38Loses the football in the passing motion.
00:47:40And Bobby Hamilton jumps on it.
00:47:45Another indie turnover.
00:47:47Their second of the day.
00:47:50And New England takes over as a number of fans get up out of their seats
00:47:55and head for the exits.
00:47:57Right now Peyton Manning is just disgusted with himself
00:47:59because he has a nice throw.
00:48:01This ball just slips right out of his hand.
00:48:03I don't know if his hands are wet.
00:48:05He's really upset with himself.
00:48:07But he has someone to throw to right over the middle of the field.
00:48:10But the ball just comes right out of his hand.
00:48:12He's not hit.
00:48:13He's standing alone.
00:48:14And with that, it costs his team dearly an opportunity
00:48:17to get back into the ballgame.
00:48:19Uncharacteristic mistake from Peyton Manning.
00:48:22And now New England just wants to use as much clock as possible.
00:48:26Antoine Smith up the middle for a gain of two.
00:48:29And there you see the fans' reaction following that turnover.
00:48:32Indianapolis is now a minus 10 on turnover ratio this year.
00:48:37They came in at 29th in the league, worst in the AFC.
00:48:41And Rob Morris right now is on his back.
00:48:45The middle linebacker on this Colts defense in his second year from BYU.
00:48:51Played in only seven games last year because of a knee injury
00:48:54that cut his rookie year short.
00:48:5738-17 New England.
00:49:00Timeout.
00:49:03Rob Morris limped off the field.
00:49:05Peyton Manning having a little chat, checking out some pictures
00:49:10with Mark Rip in the backup quarterback.
00:49:17Turnover from Indianapolis, giving New England the football.
00:49:20And Jim Morris' long day continues.
00:49:26Trying to avoid their third consecutive loss.
00:49:29First to New England three weeks ago, then a bye,
00:49:31and then a loss to Oakland last week, 23-18 on Sunday night.
00:49:38Second and eight for the Patriots from the 26.
00:49:41Again, some chicanery.
00:49:43Troy Brown.
00:49:45Brown, instead of taking it to the outside, decided to cut it in.
00:49:50And he did pick up eight yards on the play.
00:49:53Plays like that, the reverse to the wide receiver, Troy Brown.
00:49:57Those are plays that keep the defense off balance.
00:49:59We saw the first touchdown of the game scored by the Patriots
00:50:02came on a reverse to David Patton, who raced all the way to the end zone.
00:50:07So this is an offense.
00:50:08Charlie Weiss, the offensive coordinator, doing a good job
00:50:10keeping the coach's defense off balance with a number of things.
00:50:14We saw Tom Brady get the ball over to Patton, the wide receiver,
00:50:18then throwing the ball deep to Troy Brown.
00:50:20So there's been a number of different plays here showing some creativity.
00:50:24Another first down for New England.
00:50:26And they are content keeping it on the ground, and why not?
00:50:29Antoine Smith barreling forward to the 35-yard line.
00:50:33No game.
00:50:34Rob Morris back in there to make the stop.
00:50:4336 plays for New England on offense.
00:50:4838 points.
00:50:50That's not the normal ratio you grow accustomed to watching NFL games.
00:50:53That's right.
00:50:54It's what they call high efficiency.
00:50:56They've had a number of big plays in this game.
00:50:59Bill Belichick's offense operating at a very high level.
00:51:03And the clock is rolling.
00:51:04We approach nine minutes to go.
00:51:06Brady wants to throw it.
00:51:08And a laser to the sideline out of the reach of Mark Edwards.
00:51:12So the clock stops.
00:51:13Now Tom Brady, out of Michigan.
00:51:17Some great quarterbacks that did come out of there over the years,
00:51:20including Brian Greasy, who preceded Brady and beat him out for the job
00:51:23during their national championship year.
00:51:26The relationship has developed between Brady and Bledsoe.
00:51:31Brady beat out Drew Henson for the job,
00:51:33and Henson has gone on to be a minor league player for the New York Yankees.
00:51:39We asked Brady if he called in to maybe get some tickets.
00:51:41He said he did.
00:51:42He's looking for ducats for Monday night, in fact, in the ALCS.
00:51:46Drew, if you have any extras, pass them along.
00:51:49Mark Edwards banged around a bit.
00:51:52Jeff Burris missed initially, and that's an 11-yard gain.
00:51:56First down for New England as they keep the clock moving and the chains move.
00:52:02Well, one weapon that Brady did not have here today, and it has not hurt him one bit.
00:52:06Terry Glenn announced before the game today that that injured hamstring was
00:52:12too tough for him to come back from.
00:52:14Well, they found other ways to manufacture some yards in the offense.
00:52:18We talked about the reverses to David Patton, but then the pass over to Patton,
00:52:23and then he goes deep to Troy Brown.
00:52:25So you can see the numbers for both receivers today.
00:52:27Just operating at a high level, really getting it done any way they can.
00:52:31Troy Brown is dragged down just before he went out of bounds at the 49-yard line
00:52:36of the Colts' five-yard pass play.
00:52:39Jeff Burris with the tackle as we approach eight minutes to go on the fourth.
00:52:46Now, Troy Brown, we asked him about Brady, and if they knew right away that they had a guy
00:52:51that could direct this offense.
00:52:53He said, we knew last year in preseason that this guy was the real thing.
00:52:57He said they knew with the arm strength that this guy has.
00:53:00And, you know, Troy Brown comes in to this game with the AFC's second-leading receiver
00:53:05with 31 receptions.
00:53:06He's adding to it.
00:53:08He's making a name for himself.
00:53:09Seven catches, 112 yards today for Brown.
00:53:12Here's Smith, able to turn it up and then driven back.
00:53:16It'll be third and short coming up after the three-yard gain,
00:53:20and just about everybody got involved defensively for Indianapolis.
00:53:26Also with Troy Brown, we asked about the adjustment going from Bledsoe to Brady.
00:53:30He said, hey, I've been with Bledsoe the last nine years,
00:53:33so obviously there's that transition period.
00:53:35The ball comes in a little bit different from Brady than it did from Bledsoe.
00:53:39He said there's some adjustment.
00:53:41He said the biggest key has been trying to get Tom Brady to stick to the script.
00:53:45He said last week he was saying, okay, let's do some things a little different.
00:53:48He said, hey, yo, hey, young quarterback, let's just stick to the script.
00:53:51Calm down.
00:53:52That's what the coaches tell us to do.
00:53:53It's working.
00:53:55Brady on a side-on toss to the outside, and Charles Johnson in a matchup
00:54:00with Idrees Bashir.
00:54:02Three-yard gain, they needed two, and another first down for New England.
00:54:05This is becoming methodical for them as clock is just peeling off time.
00:54:126.38 and counting left in the fourth.
00:54:14You can see the Patriots are sticking with the passing game.
00:54:17At a crucial time like this in the ballgame, as time is winding down,
00:54:21it tells you they're still going after this coach secondary,
00:54:24but it also tells you that I think they have a lack of confidence
00:54:27in their ability to run the football and run out the clock,
00:54:30so they're going to keep the ball in the hands of Tom Brady.
00:54:33Brady still has not thrown an interception as a pro QB.
00:54:37On again, up the middle, Kevin Faulk.
00:54:40And he ran into a crowd for a pickup of two.
00:54:44There you can see nothing really happening when they try to run the ball,
00:54:48just running right into a wall, so that's why they're still throwing the ball
00:54:52at times here in the fourth quarter.
00:54:54Tom Brady still making good decisions, as you said,
00:54:57haven't thrown an interception yet, so you can trust him with the football
00:55:00at this point in the ballgame.
00:55:02Only two career passes now without a pick, and the obvious question
00:55:05that will begin to surface is, A, when will Bledsoe be ready to come back,
00:55:10and B, if he is ready, is it guaranteed that his job is waiting for him?
00:55:15I don't know if Bledsoe is ready to come back soon.
00:55:17He's lost over 15 pounds due to internal bleeding.
00:55:21I mean, it's been really tough watching Drew Bledsoe just sit out on the sideline,
00:55:27but certainly with the maturation of the quarterback Tom Brady,
00:55:30I think they can afford to give Drew as much time as he needs
00:55:33to recover from his injuries.
00:55:35Two-yard gain for Smith.
00:55:37Bledsoe just this week began using a stationary bike and lifting light weights,
00:55:43so Bledsoe mentally trying to get back into the swing of things.
00:55:49But, you know, the second part of that question still remains.
00:55:53If Bledsoe is healthy, do we have a quarterback controversy here?
00:55:58Zelichek has avoided answering that question.
00:56:00And you know what, he's not going to answer it until he has to.
00:56:03It will be interesting to see when Bledsoe does come back
00:56:06and he's at full strength, what will they do then?
00:56:09Maybe Tom Brady will pull off by then. Who knows?
00:56:12Rifles it to the sideline, and Troy Brown catches for another New England first down.
00:56:19It's all hypothetical right now, but I'll just ask your opinion.
00:56:23If they keep winning, Tom Brady is in there as the QB.
00:56:26You've got a pro bowler in Drew Bledsoe who just assumed he'll have his job ready for him.
00:56:31If you're the coach of this team, what's your thought process?
00:56:34I think the way Tom Brady is playing right now, you have to, I think,
00:56:37continue to allow him to lead the football team.
00:56:39He's playing so well at such a high level, and you know what?
00:56:42He has the same strength and same strong arm that Drew Bledsoe has,
00:56:46but he's a bit more mobile than what we've seen from Drew Bledsoe in the past.
00:56:50So you have to allow, I think, a good thing to keep going.
00:56:53Edwards cutting it to the outside.
00:56:59And a five-yard gain for Edwards.
00:57:02There's so many different guys we can focus in on today offensively for New England.
00:57:06David Patton is the first player since Walter Payton to catch, run, and throw for a touchdown in the same game.
00:57:14And Sweetness did it back in October of 1979, 22 years ago today.
00:57:22October the 21st.
00:57:23Well, congratulations to David Patton to have your name mentioned with greatness,
00:57:28with Walter Payton.
00:57:30I think it's just a truly wonderful accomplishment.
00:57:35Coming up on about seven minutes that they've occupied this drive off the clock.
00:57:41And again, running the football, Antoine Smith.
00:57:45Well, we talk about the New England side because it certainly appears the Patriots are going to 3-3,
00:57:50but now we've got to focus on the other side, and that's Jim Mora and this Indianapolis team.
00:57:54High expectations once again this year.
00:57:56They get off to the great start, 2-0, scoring points at will.
00:58:01All of a sudden, they look up, they're going to be 2-3 with huge question marks.
00:58:06And they're still performing, I think, at a high level on offense.
00:58:09Payton Manning throwing for over 300 yards.
00:58:11Edwin James rushing for 143 yards.
00:58:14And Marvin Harrison over 100 yards.
00:58:16I think the adjustments need to be made on defense.
00:58:19They've got to start making plays.
00:58:21Only one interception, but they just haven't played well on defense or on special teams today.
00:58:26And that's been true, I think, for their last three ballgames.
00:58:28And an example.
00:58:29They know New England is running the football here, and they still can't stop them.
00:58:33Payton Manning continuing to talk on the sideline.
00:58:36And we've done enough Colt games over the years, and Payton is obviously passionate, knowledgeable, gets it.
00:58:45But it's rare that you see him that animated because the frustration level is building.
00:58:51Well, the Colts, you know, you talk to everyone with the team, and they said,
00:58:54Hey, our defense played a good game against the Oakland Raiders
00:58:57because they only held Charlie Garner and Tyrone Wheatley to 77 yards rushing in that game.
00:59:03But they gave up 6 of 12 on third down when they could not get off the football field.
00:59:08So that's a problem.
00:59:09Two-minute warning, 38-17, New England in control.
00:59:15New England Patriots with a tremendous effort here today, and they own the Colts this year.
00:59:24Two minutes to go.
00:59:26Indianapolis has timeouts, but Bly called them as New England takes a knee.
00:59:32Moments ago, we saw Payton Manning talking to the offensive line, almost lecturing the offensive line, it appeared.
00:59:38Well, they did use a timeout.
00:59:41And then during that recent timeout, Manning huddled up with his skilled position players and held court,
00:59:48and no one else said a word.
00:59:50He knows it's a long season, so he's got to keep them on the same page.
00:59:54Timeout. We're coming back.
01:00:00On a pitch, Antoine Smith couldn't cut it to the outside, and Indianapolis will use another timeout.
01:00:07It's a loss of three, and the clock stops with a minute 47 to go here in the fourth.
01:00:12Coming up, Subway postgame show.
01:00:14Jim, Mike, Randy, and Jerry have the scores and the highlights, plus all the latest NFL news.
01:00:18It's coming up on the Subway postgame show.
01:00:21And also a reminder that you can follow all the games on NFL.com,
01:00:26and after the games, get in-depth analysis and recaps from the experts only at NFL.com,
01:00:32or you can check them out on AOLkeywordNFL.com.
01:00:39Peyton Manning is having a conversation with anyone that'll listen on that Indianapolis sideline.
01:00:44Howard Mudd, the offensive line coach, is now the guy that Peyton is sharing his opinions with.
01:00:50You know, one thing you like about Peyton Manning is he cares,
01:00:53and he's very proactive in trying to get down to the bottom of the problem,
01:00:57trying to find solutions to make this football team better in all phases of the football game.
01:01:02Of course, he can only control what goes on on the offensive side of the ball,
01:01:05but certainly his voice will be heard when talking to coaches and many of his teammates.
01:01:10That's Ron Smith breaking a tackle, and then brought down at the 16-yard line.
01:01:16That's a seven-yard run.
01:01:18Came on a third and 14.
01:01:21Now time is coming off. A minute 29. Indianapolis not using a timeout.
01:01:26Make a decision here if you're Bill Belichick. Do you kick the field goal, or do you just go for it?
01:01:32Not kicking the field goal means that you're telling Jim Mora,
01:01:35hey, we're not going to pour it on here.
01:01:37The damage is done.
01:01:39The damage is certainly done, and getting back to Peyton Manning,
01:01:43he was able to avoid throwing interceptions today,
01:01:47and really played really well up until that last play when Paul slipped out of his hand,
01:01:52causing a fumble. Both he and Edwin James fumbled Paul today.
01:01:55The only two turnovers on offense for the coach today.
01:01:58Brady to Edwards, and it is a first down.
01:02:01Or is it? It depends on where they spot it.
01:02:04It looks like, hmm, maybe just short.
01:02:09Now some might say, well, why don't you go for the points?
01:02:12Well, why don't you go for the points?
01:02:14Because if you get into a tiebreaker situation at the end of the year for a playoff spot,
01:02:18you know, big picture, that does make sense.
01:02:20But sometimes short term, you recognize you're going to see these guys down the road.
01:02:25There's no reason to add to what is already a good divisional matchup.
01:02:30Absolutely, and Patriots pretty much owning the Indianapolis Colts
01:02:35had won 9 of 11 coming into today's game,
01:02:38but hadn't won here at the RCA Dome in the past two years.
01:02:41So Bill Belichick has his team on track, improving week after week,
01:02:46and I think the improvement they've been able to make on the offensive side of the ball
01:02:49in the absence of Drew Bledsoe shows a good sign of coaching on Bill Belichick's job
01:02:54and really Charlie Weiss and his entire staff.
01:02:56You talk about a rarity.
01:02:58Indianapolis is taking a snap without Peyton Manning at the helm.
01:03:01It's Mark Rickman that's entered, Dominique Rhodes on the count,
01:03:05and Rhodes takes it across the 30-yard line.
01:03:09It's a 25-yard rush for Dominique Rhodes,
01:03:12rookie out of Midwest Texas State, made this team as a free agent.
01:03:17Down to 30 seconds left.
01:03:21And Indianapolis does not have much time to prepare for the next game.
01:03:26They take on Kansas City on the road, 8.30 Eastern time on Thursday,
01:03:31followed by a game with Buffalo.
01:03:34There's no doubt the Colts looked at this part of the schedule and said,
01:03:37Hey, this is where you piece these wins together.
01:03:40And while it's 2-2, it could easily have been 5-2 in a hurry.
01:03:44New England takes a timeout with 13 seconds left.
01:03:48Well, they had the bye week coming into the game against the Raiders
01:03:52with an extra week of preparation, playing at home.
01:03:55You have to have liked your chances in that game,
01:03:58but then they lose at home, and then they're back at home against the Patriots,
01:04:01and they lose again today, now having lost their third straight game,
01:04:05and they're going to have to get back on track, get back on track quickly.
01:04:08For New England, first of three straight road games.
01:04:11They've got Denver and Atlanta coming up on the schedule.
01:04:16Patriots will move to .500 and finally feel like they're in the thick of things in the AFC East.
01:04:24They're playing so much better on offense and playing better on defense.
01:04:28One area I think they need to improve is they're going to have to be able to pass the football at some point in time.
01:04:34You know, Tom Brady talked to us about playing in today's game.
01:04:37He says, you know, great weather conditions,
01:04:39so he's going to see plenty of ugly weather once he moves back to New England.
01:04:44Tom Brady wins again, and the New England Patriots sweep the Colts here in the 2001 season.
01:04:52A dominant effort back in Foxboro three weeks ago,
01:04:56another dominant effort here today at the RCA Dome.
01:04:59Subway Post Game Show is coming up.
01:05:02New England, a winner here today over Indianapolis.
01:05:07Thanks for joining us. For Solomon Wilcox, her entire CBS crew, this is Zion Eagle.
01:05:12Subway Post Game Show is next. You've been watching the NFL on CBS.
