Wycliffe (Faith) (1996)

S3, Ep 6: Faith. Wycliffe welcomes an old friend and his teenage daughter to stay for a while after the ending of his volatile marriage. But any happy reunion is put on hold when two girls discover the body of a baby in a cardboard box on the church steps. As Wycliffe and his team ponder how anyone could end the life of a baby, they are approached by an eyewitness who reports of a secret pagan sect in the community and of having seen them with a child on the night the baby died. It leads Wycliffe to consider some uncomfortable possibilities in a case that will test his resolve...

Starring Jack Shepherd, Helen Masters, Jimmy Yuill, Lynn Farleigh, Richard Durden, Tim Wylton, Gregory Chisholm, Malcolm Storry, Alexandra Milman, Phil Rowlands, Hugh Munro, John Gregor, Aaron Harris, Harri Alexander, Kate Reynolds, Guy Oliver-Watts, Mary Chater, Laurence Leason and Sophie Turner (no, not that one). This is a random episode of Wycliffe from Series 3, episode 6, and was originally broadcast on July 28th 1996. Like most Wycliffe mysteries it's a slow mover, but goes down some dark avenues in it's investigation into the death of a baby. I do not have any other Wycliffe episodes and this is chiefly because it features Alexandra Milman, who seems to have quite a number of fans who still remember her during her stardom in the 1990's.

01:00Child, daughter, mother, father, son, daughter, mother, son, child.
01:13And now, bring in the child.
01:25So where's he supposed to be picking us at?
01:27Said he'd meet us at the door.
01:31I don't know why we're all dressed up like this.
01:34He's only a flaming trumpet player.
01:36We had a laugh with him last year, didn't we?
01:39I hope he's got a eater, though. I'm freezing out here.
01:49Listen, I know he's nice and all that,
01:51but you don't think he's a perv, do you?
01:54No.
01:56Anyway, what if he is?
01:58He's got a nice bum, though.
02:04Maybe he meant round the front.
02:06Yeah, come on.
02:22What if he's not coming?
02:24Oh, patience, girl.
02:29HE SNIFFS
02:44What are you doing that for?
02:46I told you, I'm bloody cold.
02:48But it might belong to someone.
02:50Oh, don't be so daft, Nicky.
02:52It's probably been left here for some charity or jumble sale or something.
02:55I suppose.
02:59Go on, then. Pass one here.
03:06Where is it?
03:10Shit.
03:25What's going on here?
03:27Sorry, sorry, you can't come any further.
03:29Can't come to do the flowers. I'm afraid that won't be possible.
03:32But this is my church. I'm sorry, but...
03:35Why is he allowed in?
03:39He's important.
03:52How long? A week, maybe.
03:56I'd say ten days at the outside.
04:02Boy or girl?
04:04Girl.
04:16What are they doing hanging round here?
04:18Waiting for a friend.
04:20Looks like they missed the party, eh?
04:26Strangled.
04:28The whites of the eyes are ruptured.
04:30You can see the paint-red points, the tichial hemorrhage.
04:33How long has she been dead?
04:3524 hours, maybe less.
04:37Are there any signs of assault?
04:39No. Close her eyes and she looks perfect.
04:41She wouldn't have suffered for long, then?
04:43No. It's very quick.
04:45Small mercies, eh?
04:50Well...
04:52It wouldn't be too difficult to trace the parents.
04:55We haven't had any reports of a missing baby,
04:57so it's probably the parents that left her there.
04:59We'll be assuming a church would be the safest place.
05:02The body will be looked after.
05:04Doug, could you set up a press conference?
05:06Yeah.
05:08And then make sure we've got enough manpower to cover the phones.
05:11Lucy, check the local hospitals' records of recent births.
05:15Sir, I've got a brand name on the blanket.
05:18Happy Tots. Good.
05:20We'll see if you can trace them and find out where they came from, what branch.
05:23What if the baby isn't from Cornwall?
05:25It could have been brought here from just about anywhere.
05:27Not from Cornwall. But why go to all that trouble, then?
05:29Why not take her to the nearest church?
05:31Well, maybe this is the nearest church.
05:33Either that or we've got a nationwide search on our hands.
05:35Let's just make sure we've got all the angles covered here, shall we,
05:37before we start jumping to conclusions?
05:39PHONE RINGS
05:41Excuse me.
05:44What's this?
05:47Helen, is that you?
05:50No, no, no, no, I can't. I'm right in the middle of, um...
05:53The car?
05:55I thought David was...
05:57Yeah.
05:59Look, if it isn't the battery, well, you'd better call somebody out.
06:04OK, um...
06:06What time are they due at the station?
06:14Charlie!
06:17Good to see you, Charlie.
06:19And to you, Bill.
06:21Um, is Joyce not with you?
06:23Huh?
06:25Look, I'm sorry we couldn't make it, but you know what bloody school's like these days.
06:28You'll have to tell me. I get enough of that from Helen.
06:31Well, there we are, then.
06:33So, happy anniversary!
06:36What are we going to do with your father, Kate?
06:38Same as usual, mate. Just take me to the nearest pub and hold that jazz.
06:42Ruth's still in France.
06:44All right, Kate. But she's due back tomorrow, I think.
06:47So, where do we go first, then?
06:49That lunchtime gig at the Bloon Hut was great last year.
06:51I'm sorry, Bill, but, um...
06:53I've got to drop you straight off at the house.
06:56Well, you're not going back to the office.
06:58Yeah. I've got a press conference.
07:00Nothing serious, is it?
07:02I'm afraid so.
07:05Yeah, a blue and white check with a red stripe.
07:11Yeah, yeah, that'll be it.
07:13Yeah, OK.
07:14Dr Dayton, the baby is dead and it's urgent that we trace the mother.
07:17Yeah, OK. Thanks. Bye.
07:19Thank you.
07:21Shit!
07:25Uh, these blankets. I don't think you're going to have much luck.
07:28Nothing at all?
07:29According to the head office of the store,
07:31those were the colours that were on sale last year.
07:34Every branch throughout the country.
07:36Well, you'd better get on to those baby clothes, then.
07:38How are you getting on, Dixon?
07:39Well, I've got through all the files on the local hospitals
07:42and I'm just drawing up a list of all the local GPs.
07:45Right. Any luck?
07:47Nothing.
07:49Where's Joyce?
07:51Home, I expect.
07:53You don't think anything's wrong, do you?
07:55I wouldn't have thought so.
07:56But it's school holidays. If Bill and Kate are here, why not Joyce?
07:59I don't know. Ask them.
08:00I can't do that.
08:01Well, then pray it by ear.
08:03If something has gone wrong, I'm sure he'll tell us in his own time.
08:09You've given him my room.
08:10Well, thanks very much.
08:11This happens every year. It's not fair.
08:33Is everything all right?
08:41Hey. Hey.
08:45Hey, come on, love.
08:49It'll be all right.
08:52Don't worry.
08:54We found the body of a child
08:56abandoned outside St Catherine's Church
09:00at 12 o'clock midday.
09:03As yet, we don't know the identity of the child
09:06or the cause of death.
09:10I've called this press conference
09:12so that someone who might know this child or the parents
09:16can come forward and help us with our enquiries.
09:19You've got no lead, then?
09:21At the moment, there are no other details.
09:23How old's the child?
09:25Approximately ten days.
09:27Can you tell us what sex the child was?
09:29I'm afraid not.
09:30Are there any reports of a missing child?
09:34As I said...
09:37Cases like this are always so disturbing
09:40for everyone involved,
09:42including Charlie.
09:46He's not meant to have a real emotional response.
09:51But it gets to him every time.
09:54I know, cos he always brings it home.
09:57That must be difficult.
10:02Sir, what have we got?
10:04Well, nothing from the NHS hospital, sir.
10:06Lucy's just started with the local doctors
10:08and we're going to check up on her family.
10:10Apparently, the district nurse hasn't been able to get access
10:13for a couple of days and she's a bit concerned, so...
10:16Right, let's hope we can get to the bottom of this
10:18before the press start blowing it up out of all proportion,
10:20putting the fear of God into anyone with a baby.
10:22They will, sir.
10:29How's Joyce?
10:31Oh, fine. Fine.
10:33Up to her eyes in paperwork, as usual.
10:35I thought she'd like to come with you.
10:37Oh, you know Joyce. Work, work, work.
10:41I thought it was good for Kate to have a holiday, though.
10:44GCSE's and all of that.
10:46She deserved a break before settling down to it all.
10:52Ah!
10:54Well, it's good to see you.
10:56Yeah.
10:59Me too.
11:04HEAVY BREATHING
11:14BABY CRYING
11:34Hello.
11:36Gucci, gucci, goo.
11:39Oi!
11:41Who are they to think you are, pervert?
11:43Don't do that, please.
11:45Protective Inspector Kersey, OK?
11:47What do you want?
11:49Is this your baby? Toby?
11:51What's the matter, love?
11:53Nothing. Get in the car.
11:55You were saying?
11:57Um, obviously this is your baby.
12:00That's what I was asking.
12:03It's not something any of us ever get used to, Ian.
12:08Even when you've seen it all before?
12:10No.
12:12And when you don't feel anything,
12:14you know you've reached the end of the line.
12:18It's not as though I knew her or anything like that.
12:20Doesn't matter.
12:23SILENCE
12:29Uh, sir, um, Andy's made a list of all the doctors in the immediate area
12:34who've been treating pregnant women privately in the last month.
12:38Only six have given birth so far.
12:42You'd better get on to them.
12:45It might be worth checking to see if, um,
12:48any new mothers have been treated for depression recently.
12:52I remember when David was born, Helen was a bit, well,
12:56not deeply depressed, but, uh, I don't know.
12:59I think she felt as if part of her life had come to an end.
13:02Hmm. Happens to a lot of women, apparently.
13:04Excuse me, sir, there's somebody at the front desk.
13:07Constable, I thought I told you...
13:09I tried, sir, but he was very insistent.
13:11I'm sorry to barge in like this,
13:13but I need to talk to you about the baby.
13:17I know who killed it.
13:19I've been watching them for some time now.
13:21I suppose I've been... This might sound a little crazy,
13:24but I've been trying to put some sort of file together,
13:27watch where they meet, what they do.
13:29And you say you know who these people are?
13:32No, not all.
13:34But the one I assume they treat as their leader, yeah, I do know him.
13:38His name's Dayton.
13:40Dayton?
13:42You don't mean Dr Alan Dayton?
13:45Yeah. He's the one you want to stop.
13:47What makes you think he's involved with the death of a child?
13:52My wife, well, my ex-wife,
13:55was a patient of his during her pregnancy.
13:58I don't know exactly what happened.
14:00Some sort of brainwashing, I suppose.
14:03But during those last few months, she changed.
14:06Under his influence?
14:08Absolutely.
14:10I didn't understand what was happening.
14:12I still find it difficult to believe.
14:15She told me she'd become a pagan.
14:18Of course, I knew nothing about paganism.
14:21I asked her to explain what was going on.
14:24She tried, but I wasn't really listening.
14:27All I could see was how deeply involved she'd become,
14:30as though her mind had been taken over completely.
14:33And she was still seeing Dr Dayton?
14:36Oh, yes.
14:39At first, I pulled it down to some phase she was going through,
14:43something to do with the pregnancy.
14:45But then he started giving her things to drink,
14:48some herbal concoctions he'd put together himself.
14:51He said they'd help when she went into labour.
14:54And did they?
14:56My daughter was born.
14:59But Dayton, you've got to stop him.
15:02He's dangerous and he's evil.
15:06You're obviously very angry, Mr Matthews.
15:10Do you have any evidence to substantiate your allegations?
15:14My daughter was born dead.
15:19I thought my job was bad enough.
15:21Brings it all home to you, doesn't it?
15:25So, it's definitely manual strangulation, then?
15:29Yes. Some of the bruising's beginning to come out now.
15:33Fingers and thumbs at the point where the pressure was exerted.
15:36What about other injuries?
15:38No.
15:40Someone on the wiser?
15:42I'm afraid not. Excuse me.
15:48Dress Matthew's daughter died over six months ago.
15:51Stillborn.
15:53Totally unexpected, of course, and tragic.
15:56But not in any way unusual.
15:58And the herbal drinks you were giving his wife at the time?
16:01My God, he is paranoid.
16:03A simple herbal remedy for backache.
16:06I could give you a sample, if you'd like.
16:09Unless, of course, you'd prefer to believe the accusations of a man
16:12so bitter about his wife's leaving him, he'll blame anyone but himself.
16:16All because, at the end of the day, he has no one and nothing to turn to.
16:21What is it you believe in, Dr Dayton?
16:23I'm sorry?
16:25Who or what do you turn to?
16:28I don't understand.
16:30Well, even as a pagan, you must have faith in something.
16:34My faith is none of your business, Inspector.
16:37It is when the possible murder of a child is in question.
16:41We spoke on the phone earlier today, do you remember?
16:44You didn't seem at all bothered or concerned to help us with our inquiries.
16:48What were you doing in the woods with that child, Dr Dayton?
16:54Well, if you must know, I was at a ceremony welcoming the child to the world.
16:59Not that it's relevant to your investigation.
17:01Where is it now?
17:03Where's what?
17:04The baby you welcomed to the world.
17:08For God's sake, you don't...
17:10I'd like the name and address of the parents.
17:12What do you take me for?
17:14What the hell has Chris Matthews been saying?
17:16I'm a doctor.
17:18Do these hands look as if they would murder a child?
17:23OK.
17:25That's good work.
17:27But if Dayton is involved, we'll need real evidence.
17:33Yes, but make sure the surveillance is discreet.
17:37Yeah.
17:45Bill, are you sure about Kate?
17:47Oh, yeah, yeah, she's fine.
17:49Well, maybe I'll take her a sandwich later.
17:51Helen, if Kate says she's not hungry...
17:56Oh, come on!
17:58Where's that bottle of malt she keeps in the way for rainy days?
18:01Is that all you two are going to do for the rest of the night?
18:03Mm-hm.
18:04I could always go to the pub.
18:05David!
18:06I meant for the jazz.
18:10God, I wish Ruth was here.
18:12David is no help, the mood he's in.
18:15She'll be home tomorrow.
18:17Well, I tell you, there is definitely something wrong with those two.
18:20I bet you any money's left, Joyce.
18:23Are you going to talk to him?
18:25Well, let's just see, shall we?
18:27You know what he's like when he's drinking.
18:29You can't shut him up, usually.
18:31Don't turn it into a drinking competition.
18:42Well, if it's good enough for them,
18:45if it's good enough for them...
18:50Women, Charlie.
18:51Why the hell do they have to make life so bloody complicated?
18:55It's one of life's great mysteries.
18:57Yeah, but just when you've got things sorted out,
18:59some bloody thunderbolt from the blue,
19:02this time it's right between the eyes.
19:09Bill.
19:10Hmm?
19:15You and Joyce...
19:16Oh, I don't want to talk about it.
19:18Oh, no, that's unfair.
19:21You want me to tell you about me and Joyce.
19:24Question, are we happy?
19:26Answer, no, we bloody well ain't.
19:30OK.
19:34Oh!
19:37Next!
19:41And then what happened?
19:44Mum and Dad had a row.
19:46She said she was going away, needed a break.
19:49Then Dad went and said the same thing.
19:52Didn't want to stay in the house.
19:56And where did you fit into all this?
19:59Mum wanted me to stay with her, but...
20:03Daddy's girl.
20:07Ruth's exactly the same.
20:10She and Charlie, they can argue like cat and dog.
20:14But when there's the slightest trouble,
20:16who does she run to every time?
20:18Uncle Charles.
20:20Dad.
20:21Always Dad.
20:24Mixed ability?
20:26Now, I'll tell you about mixed ability.
20:33Same class, right?
20:35Ours, Catherine.
20:37She can get straight As across the book.
20:40And then there's Lisa Marie Chow.
20:43She comes into my class and looks at me and says,
20:47''I see they're back together again.''
20:49Then she goes off.
20:51I called her back and I said, ''What's that?''
20:56And she said, ''The cheeks of my arse!''
21:08You love your kids, don't you, Charlie?
21:14Of course I do.
21:18I love my Katie doing it for that girl you know.
21:23Is Katie unhappy?
21:26No, no more, she's not.
21:30Bill.
21:38David, what are you doing?
21:40What's he looking at?
21:42Can't you see we're busy?
21:44Oh, yeah, sorry. I mean, I'd go to bed if I could.
21:47Oh, shut up.
21:48You're sitting on it.
21:51Will you just go and find something else to do, would you?
21:56I don't know.
21:59Bill.
22:01Isn't there something else you should be telling me?
22:05Yes.
22:06Charlie.
22:08Do it.
22:09Well, go on, then.
22:18I'm sorry.
22:20I'm sorry.
22:22I'm sorry.
22:25I'm sorry.
22:33I love you, Charlie.
22:38There it is, I've said it.
22:43Come on.
22:46I don't know if you have to say it.
22:48Yes, come on.
22:54David.
22:58David.
23:00What?
23:06Upstairs.
23:08We need to get there.
23:17Charlie.
23:24Charlie.
23:43It's as serious as that, is it?
23:48Uh-uh.
23:54It's as serious as that.
24:08So, we're looking at the possible involvement of a local pagan group.
24:14And if it's a dead end, we'll have to go national.
24:18Look, I don't think we should rush into this.
24:20I understand, but they're getting very restless.
24:22You make them sound like a pack of wolves.
24:2648 hours, and if there's no further development...
24:2824.
24:30I'd like you here tomorrow morning, Charles.
24:32Thanks. Bye-bye.
24:50Bye-bye.
25:10Remember this?
25:14What was the name of that club we all used to go to?
25:17Hmm.
25:20Good.
25:23Good times.
25:26Have things changed so much?
25:30They have now.
25:37I know it's none of my business, but...
25:39You're going to tell me anyway. I drink too much, I know.
25:43Come on, be my guest.
25:46Is that the problem?
25:49Well, I look upon it more as a remedy.
25:52Dolls the pain.
25:54Yes, well...
25:57You may find it helpful, but I don't see it being entirely helpful to Kate.
26:02Quite the contrary.
26:05Yeah, well, give me extra homework or a week's detention, but don't...
26:08Don't lecture me, Alan.
26:15She's very unhappy.
26:19It's not an exclusive club.
26:22You really aren't.
26:24A right bastard.
26:36Is it really all over?
26:42Probably.
26:48Good afternoon.
27:13It's about the baby, isn't it?
27:16I was watching the news yesterday.
27:18Poor mother must be in a right old state.
27:20Yes.
27:22Oh, excuse me a minute.
27:35Antidepressants.
27:37Antetamazepam.
27:40Baby crying, maybe?
27:45Maybe.
27:52Yeah, but you don't take sleeping tablets to ignore a crying baby.
27:59Mr Cranshaw.
28:02Who are you?
28:03Detective Inspector Lane.
28:06Well?
28:07It's all right, love.
28:09I was just going to explain how the baby's staying with your mother for a couple of days.
28:13That's right.
28:14Do you know what grandmothers are like?
28:17Yes, of course.
28:20Is that it?
28:27Have you checked the grandmother?
28:29There's no answer from the house.
28:31What about this ring?
28:32Are you sure it's the same as the one Dayton was wearing?
28:34Identical.
28:36I can't believe Dayton's just a local pagan.
28:39What if it's a cover for something more sinister?
28:41What about the Cranshaw family?
28:43Definitely pagans.
28:44A witch's coven?
28:46Well, I don't believe in witches.
28:48There's plenty of maniacs out there.
28:49You best keep tabs on them.
29:05I didn't think they still had witch hunts in Cornwall.
29:09We've got to find the baby's parents somehow.
29:12Yeah, but...
29:14Pagans?
29:16It's a bit sinister.
29:18Well, that's what we're going to find out.
29:22And the baby?
29:24What if you don't find the parents?
29:25I'm sure you will, but...
29:27What if?
29:28Then we've failed.
29:31And what about the baby if no one claims it?
29:36In all likelihood, if the baby's not claimed or identified...
29:41She'll be cremated.
29:44What?
29:46No service, nothing.
29:48At the end of the day, there'll be no one to mourn.
29:52Just dust.
30:06That's him.
30:10Let's go.
30:40One, two, three, four...
30:42One, two, three, four...
31:11May this child feel the wind on her face.
31:17May this child feel the water run through her fingers.
31:23May this child feel the fire warm her soul.
31:40Earth, air, fire, water.
31:44Mother, father, son, daughter.
31:47Earth, air, fire, water.
31:51Mother, father, son, daughter.
31:54Earth, air, fire, water.
31:57Mother, father, son, daughter.
32:01Earth, air, fire, water.
32:04Mother, father, son, daughter.
32:11I told you, how we choose to lead our lives is up to us.
32:15We're doing nothing illegal and we're not hurting anyone.
32:18And the baby?
32:20My daughter's perfectly healthy. You saw her yourself.
32:26Do you know Chris Matthews?
32:29I know his wife. She left him.
32:32Yeah, your christening and your God did nothing for him.
32:37We don't believe in gods.
32:40Our babies are not christened.
32:42They're dedicated to the earth and those around them.
32:46You saw it for yourselves, didn't you?
32:49Yes.
32:51And did we look dangerous?
32:55No.
32:57And we've got nothing to hide.
33:02What are you doing?
33:04What's it look like?
33:06Yes, but it normally takes hours of coaxing and a financial incentive
33:10to get you anywhere near a bucket and sponge.
33:12Yeah, well, it just goes to show how badly I wanted to be out of the house.
33:15Come on, love, it's not that bad.
33:17Oh, no? Mum, all Kate does is cry
33:19and he hasn't had a bottle out of his hand since he got here.
33:22I'm fed up with it.
33:24They're both going through a difficult time, David.
33:26Yeah, well, I've had enough.
33:34Ah!
33:37CRASHING
33:41SCREAMING
34:03What, you're trying to tell me they're not mad?
34:05No, they're not.
34:07Their practice may be different from any religion or belief we may know,
34:10but they're not mad.
34:13I think we're back to square one, sir.
34:15What, chanting in the middle of the woods, holding hands,
34:17going around in circles, they're mad as a box of frogs.
34:20Lucy?
34:22They've done nothing wrong.
34:24Did Dixon come up with anything?
34:27Well, from what it says here,
34:29it seems that Dayton can't be a pagan priest.
34:32Apparently pagans tend not to go in for any kind of hierarchical structure.
34:36That's why when they meet, they always form a circle
34:38to emphasise the fact that there's no superior figure.
34:41That's exactly what I saw.
34:43It confirms what Chris Matthews told us,
34:45but at the end of the day, it's all very innocent.
34:48There's more to it than that.
34:50Doug, we don't have any evidence.
34:52We can't take it any further.
34:55Right. Doug, I want you to set up another press conference, national.
34:58Really?
35:00We'll have to broaden the line of the inquiry.
35:02I'm going to see the ACC in about an hour.
35:04We'll be very pleased.
35:06Excuse me, sir.
35:07What is it?
35:08There's somebody out front at the front desk.
35:10He says he needs to see you.
35:12Tell him to wait.
35:13But he says he knows you, sir.
35:15A Mr Bill Hewton.
35:27Charlie.
35:28Oh, can't this wait till later?
35:29Charlie, I've got to talk to you.
35:31I'm busy.
35:35It won't take long.
35:40OK.
35:42OK, just wait here.
35:58It was very good of you to come out like this, Charlie.
36:01I mean, I knew you would.
36:03I mean, we're friends, aren't we?
36:05Friends and family always come before work.
36:09You know, I'm sure you and Joyce can work something out.
36:13I don't think so.
36:1520 years of marriage has got to be worth something.
36:18Uh-uh.
36:21You've got to get a grip, Bill.
36:23Go home, sort something out between you.
36:25You can see what he's doing to Kate.
36:27Running away isn't going to help.
36:30You don't understand.
36:33You want a divorce, is that it?
36:35No.
36:37Look, Bill.
36:40We'll stand by you, whatever you decide.
36:43But it's down to you. It's your choice.
36:45Oh, yeah?
36:46Well, some things are easy to choose between, aren't they?
36:48I mean, tea or coffee.
36:50I mean, that's not the same as life or death, is it?
36:52You'd better round with your wife. It's not the end of the world.
36:57You're not listening!
36:59You're not listening!
37:11It's my baby, Charlie.
37:15What?
37:18What? Joyce is pregnant? What? What are you saying?
37:20For God's sake!
37:23Did they spit it out for you?
37:25Can't you read between the lines? I thought that was part of your job!
37:27What?
37:29It's my baby! You found my baby, Charlie, at the church!
37:35She was my baby!
37:41Aren't you going to say anything?
37:45What happened?
37:58This is just between you and me, front to front.
38:01No.
38:03We'd better keep our friendship out of this.
38:05Why, Charlie?
38:08Why?
38:09It's all I've got. You're all I've got. Can't you see that, Charlie?
38:14I can't ignore what you're saying to me, Bill.
38:17Oh, yes.
38:19Yes, you can. Come on, Charlie.
38:23What are the facts?
38:27Come on, Charlie! Don't do this to me!
38:32What happened?
38:39We were too old, Charlie.
38:43Joyce thought we could cope. We both thought we could cope, but...
38:47Screaming.
38:49Screaming and crying.
38:51Could you cope with going through all that again at your age?
38:54So what did you do?
38:56What do you think I did?
38:59Put my hands round the neck of it.
39:02That was it.
39:05I was already packed to come down here.
39:08God, I didn't know what I was doing!
39:15You do not have to say anything.
39:17You do not have to say anything.
39:19I just kept thinking...
39:21I've got to get to Cornwall.
39:24But it may harm your defence...
39:26I didn't want to let you down.
39:29I just got in the car.
39:34You do not have to say anything, but it may harm your defence...
39:38if you do not mention, when questioned...
39:42something you later rely on in court.
39:45Anything you do say...
39:47may be given in evidence.
39:56I've arrested this man...
39:58in connection with the unlawful death...
40:01of the child found outside St Catherine's Church.
40:04I have reason to believe he may be involved.
40:08The boss has brought somebody in for the murder.
40:23Come in.
40:38So you might like this.
40:40Thank you.
40:43It's my witness statement.
40:47Would you ask Doug to go and interview Mr Hewton now?
40:53I'd better call Helen.
40:56Right.
41:07OK, I'll bring her down.
41:20Kate, there's something I have to tell you.
41:24There's something wrong, isn't there?
41:33Your father's been arrested.
41:38SHE SOBS
41:46We were packed.
41:48Ready to leave for the train.
41:51Come down every year for the festival.
41:54Stoke Charlie's.
41:58Only she wouldn't stop crying.
42:03In the other room...
42:06screaming.
42:11Joyce had walked out.
42:13Couldn't cope.
42:15I couldn't shut the baby up.
42:20I didn't know what to do.
42:28So...
42:30I got in the car and drove.
42:34Left her on the church steps.
42:38Got the train from Potman.
42:42Charlie Wickliffe thought we'd come all the way from London.
42:47Anyway, the train got in and there he was, waiting.
42:53Why didn't you leave the baby in London?
42:57I didn't know what else to do.
43:00I thought I'd...
43:02bury her on the way in the woods somewhere.
43:08Even covered with all those blankets.
43:11Some protection.
43:16But the thought of...
43:18putting her in the earth...
43:22She'd have got so dirty.
43:25Something could have eaten her.
43:27Her dog.
43:31I just couldn't go through with it.
43:39So...
43:41I drove and drove.
43:46Half the time I didn't know where I was.
43:48And then I saw the church and I thought, yeah.
43:51They'll take care of her there.
43:54Treat her right.
43:59Thing is...
44:01in my mind I...
44:03knew from the beginning I'd never get away with it.
44:10But I thought...
44:14at least I'd have Charlie on my side.
44:18At least I'd have Charlie on my side.
44:27Come in.
44:31Sir.
44:33Your wife's here with Mr Hewden's daughter.
44:38What have you done with him?
44:40I'm sorry, Kate.
44:42But your father's told me all about the baby.
44:45No.
44:47He can't.
44:52He's confessed to killing her.
45:01Did he tell you how it happened?
45:04Strangled her.
45:08Do you know why?
45:10She wouldn't stop crying.
45:12It was driving Mum mad.
45:16Did you blame him?
45:23Kate...
45:25your father's murdered your sister.
45:29You must have been angry.
45:34How did you feel about having a sister?
45:38She was your sister, wasn't she, Kate?
45:41She was my baby.
45:49Go on.
45:55I didn't want to believe it.
45:57Jonathan, my boyfriend, told me we'd be safe.
46:03Then I found out I was pregnant.
46:06I just wanted to forget about it.
46:09Did you tell anyone?
46:12Dad.
46:14He was brilliant.
46:18What about your mother?
46:21She went spare.
46:23Then Dad said it would be OK.
46:25I could have the baby.
46:27Then we'd get it adopted and no-one would know.
46:30Why didn't you?
46:33I don't know.
46:36I don't know.
46:39It was just going to take too long.
46:44Then Dad said we should keep her.
46:49I wanted to.
46:52I knew Dad loved her.
46:56And I did.
47:01So what happened?
47:03Mum.
47:05All the time.
47:06Shouting, screaming, crying.
47:08Only not of me.
47:10Of Dad.
47:11And he was being so good.
47:16Go on.
47:18I couldn't bear it anymore.
47:22So I thought, if I got rid of her,
47:24then everything would be OK again.
47:26No more arguments.
47:30And I did it.
47:33I didn't hurt her or anything.
47:37I just...
47:39put my hands around her neck
47:42and squeezed.
47:46She didn't cry.
47:54Then I told Dad.
48:04I've told him, Dad.
48:06The truth.
48:09Oh, Katie.
48:17I said I'd deal with it.
48:21I couldn't let you do it.
48:23I couldn't.
48:25I said I'd deal with it.
48:27I said I'd deal with it.
48:29I said I'd deal with it.
48:31I couldn't let you do it, Dad.
48:50Lucy, erm...
48:52Would you get in touch with Joyce Hewton for me?
48:55Just a number.
48:57Sorry.
48:59Your wife's still waiting in the reception.
49:01I think she's waiting for Kate.
49:03Tell her I'll be about five minutes.
49:13You're free to go for now.
49:17But I have to tell you...
49:19as an accomplice,
49:21you may face charges at a later date.
49:25I would have...
49:28hung for Katie.
49:34I'm sorry, Bill.
49:54I'm sorry.
50:24I'm sorry.
