00:00Leif Treble by Jonathan Emmett
00:29Illustrated by Caroline Jane Church
00:35A fresh breeze blew across the woodland, tickling the grass and trembling the trees.
00:41Summer had left and autumn had arrived.
00:44Pip's squirrel stuck his head out of the nest and sniffed the air.
00:47Something's changed, he decided, and he scampered off to find out what it was.
00:57Pip's nest was in an old oak tree.
01:00Pip loved the old tree, and he knew every bit of it, from twig to trunk.
01:05But something was happening to the tree.
01:08It was happening so slowly that Pip hadn't noticed, until now.
01:13He skittered to a stop and stared at the leaves beside him.
01:20He was so surprised that he let go of the trunk.
01:25Waaah! squealed Pip as he tumbled down through the branches and landed, oof, on the woodland
01:34floor.
01:39Pip lay there for a moment, staring up at the leaves.
01:43They've changed color, he gasped.
01:46And he was right.
01:47The last time Pip had looked closely at the leaves, they had all been green.
01:51But now there were lots of colors, yellow and orange and even red.
02:01As Pip watched, one of the leaves dropped off and drifted down toward the ground.
02:08He jumped up and ran after it and caught it in his paws.
02:12But even as he reached it, another leaf began to fall.
02:16Pip ran after the second leaf and just managed to catch it before it touched the woodland
02:21floor.
02:22Not again, gasped Pip as a third leaf began to fall.
02:30Pip was still racing around, trying to catch the fallen leaves when his sister, Blossom,
02:35scurried up.
02:36Good, panted Pip, you're just in time.
02:40Just in time for what? asked Blossom.
02:43To help save the tree, puffed Pip.
02:46It's falling to pieces.
02:48But that's been happening for days, said Blossom, pointing to the leaf-covered ground.
02:53Then we've got to stop it now, insisted Pip.
03:00Pip and Blossom collected all the fallen leaves into a big pile.
03:05Now what? asked Blossom.
03:08We put them back, said Pip.
03:14So Blossom carried the leaves up into the tree, where Pip tried to stick them back onto
03:19the branches.
03:20But it didn't work very well.
03:26Then all of a sudden, there was a huge gust of wind and hundreds of leaves began to fall.
03:33Pip and Blossom were scrambling around frantically, trying to gather them, when Mom Squirrel arrived.
03:40What are you two up to? she asked.
03:46When Mom found out what Pip and Blossom had been doing, she couldn't help smiling.
03:52But Pip, she said, the tree has to lose its leaves.
03:56And she explained that taking care of the leaves was hard work for the tree, and that
04:01after keeping them all summer, it needed to rest for a while.
04:09But I love this tree, said Pip sadly.
04:13It's our home, and I want it back the way it was.
04:17It will be, said Mom.
04:19When spring comes, the leaves will all come back again.
04:23They've only gone away for a while.
04:26Like when the sun sets and then comes back again, said Pip.
04:30Like when the sun sets, agreed Mom.
04:33Except the leaves will just take a little longer to come back.
04:40Pip, Blossom, and Mom played beneath the old oak tree until sunset.
04:45Before they left, they collected some leaves to take back to their nest.
04:54They're such beautiful colors, said Pip, smiling.
04:58And now I understand why.
05:00He held up a pawful of leaves to show Blossom and Mom.
05:04They're the colors of the sunset, said Pip.
05:14I hope you enjoyed that story.
