00:27Pumpkins by Mary Lynn Ray
00:30illustrated by Barry Root
00:34Once upon a time there was a field
00:37It was a particular field in a particular place where it lived among young hills that would grow up to be mountains
00:46Across from this field there lived a man who loved it
00:53One day a sign appeared in the field it said for sale
00:58The man knew what that meant bulldozers houses streets and streetlights the man cried
01:10He wished he could buy the field then it could always stay a field
01:15But he had very little money. He counted what he had and it wasn't enough
01:21So the man sold his furniture and his paintings and his silverware and his pocket watch
01:27He sold everything he owned except his bed and his stove and his bathtub
01:32Still he didn't have enough. What could he do?
01:39The man talked to the field and the field said it would help
01:43They considered growing Christmas trees, which the man could sell in the city, but trees grow slowly there wasn't time
01:51They considered growing cows, but they would need a barn and milk pails, which they didn't have
01:58Then the man thought of pumpkins
02:04The next day he went to the farm store and bought an envelope of seeds which he scattered in the field
02:14The rain came and wet them the Sun came and warmed them and they grew
02:20Soon the field was covered in pumpkins and they grew and they grew and they grew
02:26When it was time to harvest there were four hundred sixty one thousand
02:32Two-hundred-and-twelve pumpkins which the man planned to sell for a dollar each that would be enough
02:42He rented fourteen hundred trucks
02:46Thirty-seven boats in eight hundred airplanes to carry them away a
02:50Rug merchant lent him a hundred flying carpets for the rest
02:58The man got an atlas and looked up all the kings of all the countries
03:03Then he telephoned them and told them he was shipping them some pumpkins
03:08Where there were democracies he called the Congress's
03:12Every king and every Congress he talked to said the same thing
03:17Why should their people want pumpkins?
03:20They didn't know about jack-o'-lanterns
03:22They didn't know about pumpkin pie or pumpkin muffins or pumpkin ice cream
03:27Many of them didn't even know about vanilla ice cream
03:33So the man wrote four hundred sixty one thousand
03:38Two-hundred-and-twelve tags to tie to his pumpkins to explain what they were for
03:43Luckily he knew how to write in many languages
03:46Then he sent the pumpkins out
03:52When they arrived these round orange heavy bumpy pumpkins
03:57People read the tags and bought them in Dundee
04:01Westham
04:02Darlington and Motherwell in Shanghai
04:05Foochow and Bangkok
04:10All over the world in Kiev
04:13Killarney cartoon and Tashkent in Quito Quebec
04:18Cairo and Carith there were jack-o'-lanterns being carved there were pumpkin pies baking and muffins muffining
04:29Now the trucks and boats and airplanes and carpets
04:33Emptied of pumpkins returned to the man carrying dollars
04:38He had enough money to buy the field and he had some extra which he used to buy new furniture to replace what he had
04:45sold
04:49But he didn't replace the paintings because he had the field to look at and he didn't replace the watch
04:57Because he had the Sun and the stars to tell him when it was day and when it was night
05:03You
05:05The man might have planted more pumpkins he had kept one back for seeds
05:11Pumpkins would make him rich
05:13But he had everything he needed so he decided to give the seeds away
05:22Because somewhere someone might love another field pumpkins could save
