00:00The government is open to amending the anti-hopping law to plug any existing loopholes.
00:08Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said he was open to discussing the matter with the opposition.
00:14Anwar also reiterated that when the anti-hopping law was being drafted, Pakatan Harapan insisted
00:20that anyone removed from a party should be automatically disqualified as an MP.
00:26However, he said that Bersatu, which was part of the government then, did not agree because
00:31they were bringing in members from UMNO.
00:34Amendments to Article 49A of the federal constitution, known as the anti-hopping law, came into effect
00:40in October 2022.
00:43It was part of a reform pact between the Ismail Sabri Yaakob administration and Pakatan Harapan,
00:48which was in the opposition.
00:50The push for this law gained momentum after several PKR MPs joined a Bersatu-led revolt
00:56against the PH government, which collapsed in February 2020.
