00:00The anti-hopping law should be tightened to prevent abuse by politicians who practice
00:07party hopping, says UMNO Vice President Johari Ghani.
00:11He said technical issues or shortcomings in the law need to be addressed and rectified
00:15if necessary, adding that party hopping should not be encouraged.
00:19Johari said the culture of party hopping would undermine investor confidence in the country's
00:23political stability, the New Straits Times reported.
00:27He cited the example of Malaysia's U-turn on the goods and services tax, which was introduced
00:32in 2016 but was abolished by the Pakatan Harapan government in 2018.
00:38The anti-hopping law came into the spotlight after six Persatu MPs ceased to be party members
00:42for declaring support for Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.
00:46Last week, the Dewan Rakyat Speaker said there was no need to vacate their parliamentary
00:50seats.
00:51Yesterday, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said the government is open to amending any loopholes
00:56in the anti-hopping law.
