Patriots linebacker Matthew Judon, who has been a critical leader of the team for the last few years and arguably their best player, is allegedly unhappy with his contract situation, per Greg Bedard.

According to Bedard and sources he has spoken to close to the situation, Matthew Judon will not play for the Patriots under the current terms of his deal.

"From the people that I've talked to, he is not going to play under his current contract situation, at least for the Patriots. I can't talk about any place else...I don't know exactly what's been communicated to the team, but that's my understanding."

Judon, known for his red sleeves he wears on the football field, was acquired in free agency from the Baltimore Ravens in 2021. He immediately became one of the team's best defenders, recording 12.5 sacks as the Patriots reached the playoffs for the only time since Tom Brady's departure. He had the best year of his career in 2022, recording 15.5 sacks and 60 total tackles.

In 2023, Judon suffered a shoulder injury in the fourth game of the season which kept him out the rest of the year.

Judon is poised to make $7.5 million in 2024, according to Spotrac. If he truly is unhappy with his deal, the Patriots have a few options for how they can move forward.

"Do you want to extend him? Do you want to give him a short-term raise? Would you rather trade him to a contender or somebody who wants to pay him? All of those options are currently on the table for the Patriots," said Bedard.

00:00This is the Gregg Bedard Patriots podcast with Nick Cavins.
00:10We have to talk about Matthew Judon and his future with the Patriots.
00:16What I know is he may be playing nice publicly and he has, he has said all the right things
00:24and if you want to believe him, take him at his word, you know, go right ahead, I'm not
00:28going to stop you.
00:30What I can tell you is from the people that I've talked to, he is not going to play under
00:36his current contract, at least for the Patriots.
00:41I can't talk about any place else.
00:43That's my understanding.
00:45I don't know exactly what's been communicated to the team, but that's my understanding.
00:51You could also put Devon Godshow in that bucket.
00:54So the question gets in, you know, what do you want to do with Matthew Judon?
01:00Do you want to extend him?
01:01Do you want to give him a short-term raise?
01:04Would you rather trade him to a contender or somebody who wants to pay him?
01:11All those options I would think are currently on the table for the Patriots.
01:17Here's where I am right now.
01:20I would be in favor, as of this moment, of giving him a bump, three, four million for
01:27this year, something like that, to get him to around 10 just because I think he's a very
01:35good player.
01:36I think that Gerard Mayo is going to want his defense to show out.
01:42It's his baby, just like it was Belichick's.
01:45And quite frankly, the defense is going to be the way this team competes.
01:50So why would you hurt that, at least in the near term?
01:55And the other thought is, all right, you just let Judon, say you let him play out the deal,
02:01he leaves, you get a comp pick, he's going to be, I don't know, 33 at that time.
02:08I don't know what kind of contract he's going to command.
02:14But you could let him walk, you would get a comp pick in 2026.
02:21Here's where I am on that.
02:22So I would prefer to have Judon because I do think the defense and this team has a chance
02:28to at least compete and learn how to compete.
02:32And there's nothing wrong with that.
02:33Even though they're not winning the Super Bowl this year, starting the train on the
02:38tracks to that is important.
02:41And Judon could be one of those guys who does that.
02:44Maybe you just hold on to him and trade him at the deadline.
02:47If you get there and you see, all right, it's not happening for us this year, you know,
02:52that would be a good time.
02:53When are you going to get more form?
02:55Probably this summer, especially if a contender, somebody who perceives themselves as a contender
03:01gets through training camp, gets to the preseason and says, man, our pass rush is not good enough.
03:06We could really use a boost.
03:07Or a contender suffers an injury to one of their prime edge guys.
03:12And now all of a sudden somebody gets desperate.
03:14You could get something waiting for the trade deadline.
03:17Yeah, it could happen, but might not because they know it's a rental.
03:22There's no guarantee that Judon is going to stick around after the season.
03:27So but look, the big piece of the puzzle for me here is, all right, what else do the Patriots
03:34have?
03:38Keone White is a big component of this.
03:40If he continues to look like he did in the offseason and he looks like, all right, this
03:44guy needs to play, he needs to start and play.
03:48You know, where is that going to be?
03:50Is that going to be opposite Judon?
03:52Are you going to sit Anthony Jennings and Josh Ucce?
03:56Are you going to sit to Dietrich Weiss, who it seemed like Keone White had passed last
04:02year?
04:03But it looks like White is in a little different position this year in this scheme, standing
04:07up more, more of a sort of Leo linebacker in this scheme.

04:54to make names for themselves alongside greats like Brianna Stewart and Asia Wilson.
04:59You could win up to a hundred times your cash watching them ball out.
05:02Just the other day, I took Kaitlin Clark for more than three and a half, three points
05:07made and Brianna Stewart for more than 23 points.
05:10Plus I went over to baseball because you all know I like baseball.
05:13Kyle Schwarber for more than nine hitter fantasy score and Bryce Miller for more than four
05:19pitcher strikeouts.
05:20It's a lot of fun.

05:35Pick more, pick less.
05:37It's that easy.
05:40Definitely a worthwhile conversation and I think it's something that's going to evolve
05:44over the course of the summer right up until probably the season.
05:49You know, what do they want to do?
05:52I think some of the guys like Ximines, Bradley King, Russell, you know, I think Ximines looks
06:04like, you know, he has a chance.
06:05He flashed at times in the off season.
06:07So, you know, maybe you just decide to get younger there.
06:11Maybe the Patriots take the drastic route and just get younger across the board and
06:15they part with Matthew Judon and Dietrich Weiss.
06:20I don't think that's totally out of the realm of possibility.
06:24Two pretty big personalities in that locker room.
06:26I could see Weiss being a career Patriot and I wouldn't hate that.
06:32You know, he's a good dude to have around, certainly a leader on this team.
06:36But as of right now, I have Matthew Judon on the roster.
06:40That is certainly up for debate and I think will be a rolling conversation as we go.
06:50Thanks for watching.
06:51We'll see you next time.
