From 4,000 My Little Ponies to tiny pottery, new exhibit celebrates UK hobbies

More than 14,000 objects collected, created or customized by British hobbyists are shown together for the first time in the largest ever exhibition exploring the UK's hobbies.

Titled "Come As You Really Are," the exhibition was conceived by artist Hetain Patel.

Collector items on show include around 4,000 My Litte Pony toys and curated plastic bag, cigarette pack and typewriter collections.

The objects have been loaned by hundreds of people of all ages and backgrounds from across the country, who responded to a nationwide call to members of the public to share their free time interests and activities.

The exhibition, held in Croydon's Grants Building, opens on July 18 and runs through October 20.

00:00So, um, it's set out like this.
00:26So on this video, I'm going to be doing it at a British home store, Chelsea Gold.
00:29Can you take over some order at the British home store?
00:31But thank you.
00:32Oh, sorry.
00:33Oh, sorry.
00:34Oh, no, you're welcome.
00:35Do you, do you feel a certain connection to it?
00:38No, no, it's just amazing.
00:40Maybe it's a blessing.
00:41That's a blessing to me.
00:42Well, that's a blessing to me too.
00:45And then he came down and over a period of four or five days, we stuck the, stuck the
00:49carpets on.
00:54They come from all around the UK, from England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland, from people
00:59who live in towns to people in rural areas, from all kinds of different backgrounds, sometimes
01:04individuals, sometimes big communities who create stuff together for your charitable
01:09events.
01:10Sometimes it's people just squirreling away at home doing something, creating miniatures,
01:14you know, it's from such a range.
01:16And that was part one of the points of the exhibition.
01:19You know, it's not about pretending we're all the same.
01:22We're all different and we're proud of that and we show all those different ways, but
01:26we can still be together, you know, in the space and that all of our practices, our ways
01:31of thinking, that our approaches can be together and it can be joyful and we can kind of lift
01:37each other up.
01:53As we put the nationwide call out, I think the thing that surprised me, as well as all
02:08the different hobbies coming in, one, how many different hobbies there are.
02:11If I asked you to list for me now a list of hobbies, we can come up with a few, but you
02:16wouldn't think of hundreds and that's what we were getting.
02:20And then the second thing was how humble people are.
02:23People almost every time don't value quite what they're doing.
02:27And they always say, oh, you can exhibit my stuff if you think it's good enough.
02:31And that's kind of heartbreaking, you know, you sort of, we don't see our own value sometimes.
02:36And even in the show, speaking to the hobbyists, people sometimes go, oh, I feel like a bit
02:40of a fraud here.
02:41Everyone else's stuff is so good.
02:43You have to tell them, you know, this is what people are saying about your work.
02:49Can you make me a...
03:10This feels like home in a weird way, because everyone's got more than one hobby.
03:15So I've seen people dotting between things going, oh, I do that too.
03:19Or, oh, that looks cool.
03:20I might start doing that.
03:21And we just, we're all talking between each other now, which is really nice.
03:25We're exchanging details ourselves.
03:27But just, I feel so honored and so privileged to be invited here and to actually see my
03:35hobby on display.
03:36Because I don't do it for, I don't do it for likes.
03:39I don't do it for money.
03:40It's just, this is what I do in my spare time for the fun of it.
03:44And to feel recognized for that and feel appreciated is, it makes people smile.
03:49And that makes me smile.
03:50So it's just, it's even better than I thought it would be.
04:13Yeah, very sought-after stuff.
04:15Yeah.
04:16For a long time.
04:17And then it's all going into digital.
04:18I think it's great.
04:19Yeah.
04:20Yeah.
04:21Mm-hmm.
04:22Yeah.
04:23Yeah.
04:24Yeah.
04:25Yeah.
04:26Yeah.
04:27Yeah.
04:28Yeah.
04:29Yeah.
04:30Yeah.
04:31Yeah.
04:32Yeah.
04:33Yeah.
04:34Yeah.
04:35Yeah.
04:36Yeah.
04:37Yeah.
04:38Yeah.
04:39Yeah.
04:40Yeah.
04:41Yeah.
