22:08to divulge it and I don't know a lot about it but I just saw NBC 10 Boston tweeted, Netflix
22:13has announced a three-part documentary series focused on the Karen Reid murder trial and
22:18the death of Boston police officer John O'Keefe.
22:21And I must say throughout the whole thing, because I would see like Karen Reid stuff
22:24here and there, and it's just, there's so much that you, like, you have to be fully
22:28invested.
22:29I was never fully invested in it.
22:30My whole thing was when the documentary comes out, I will watch.
22:34I'm glad the documentary is finally out.
22:35So now I'm just, I'm catching up at the end of it because the joke is always I'm so late

24:23I think the lineup, the moves that they made, they have a legitimate number one center,
24:27at least for the next year or two, Zdorov kind of solidifies things on the backend.
24:32You have, you know, encouraging young pieces with Patra or Lowry and potentially Patra,
24:37you know, given how he comes back from surgery.
24:40Do you view them as Stanley Cup contenders?
24:43I do.
24:44I actually posted a sort of a quick little power rankings this week because we were talking
24:50about this on the skate podcast a little bit too.

24:54I've got them in the top five.
24:55I have them fourth.
24:56So that's absolutely a Stanley Cup contender and I would hope, you know, it's sort of like
25:03the, the impetus for that is, you know, for why we started discussing it as like, I feel
25:10like they're being slept on, you know, it's like ESPN power rankings have them seventh,
25:14which I think that's reasonable.
25:16That's not crazy.
25:17Betting odds.
25:18They are like outside the top 10, they're like 11 Stanley Cup odds.
25:22And like, honestly, it's a sneaky pick.
25:25Like if you like, that's a good one.
25:27And I saw like, and this is, you know, his analytics and we love Jay fresh.
25:30So it's not like, you know, a slight at that, but they've got, he's got him third.
25:33He's got them third in the Atlantic, which like I've got them first and that's not based
25:37off any analytics.
25:38That's not based off my, that's my own algorithm up here.
25:41But that's like, I think they're first, I don't think they're a third place team in
25:44the Atlantic.
25:45Yeah.
25:46I would still put them second behind Florida and that's, and that's kind of the, the problem
25:51in all of this is, you know, I have them fourth and I think they're a cup contender.
25:55One of the teams I still think ahead of them is, is the Panthers and like, they're still,
25:59they're still sort of the, the big bad until you prove you can get, you can get past them.
26:05Now I think the gap closed.
26:06I think the Panthers got, you know, they got a little weaker losing Montour and Eggman
26:12Larson on the back end, losing two thirds of their bottom six.
26:16They lost, you know, their entire fourth line and Tara Sanko, but they, they did the best
26:21thing they could do, which was lock up Sam Reinhardt.
26:24So like that almost on its own makes the off season a win for them so that they, they should
26:30still feel pretty good.
26:31But I think the Bruins again, whether they have more points than last year, I think they're
26:36going to be better built for the playoffs and better built to challenge the Panthers.
26:42So I think, I think you close the gap, but like, like a lot of seasons, you know, it
26:47might come down to who has the better trade deadline, right?
26:49Like what are the Bruins do?
26:50What are the Panthers do?
26:51And who comes out of that in better shape?
26:53Who found a guy who was a better fit for what they need?
26:57You know, I remember like, that's how it felt for kind of several years between the Bruins
27:01and Lightning.
27:02I think if you go back to sort of 1920, 21, kind of around then it was like every year
27:08it felt like whoever had the better deadline was, was going to be better in the playoffs
27:12and you know, and like in 2020, obviously that season all got thrown off by COVID, but
27:19then you got into the bubble and you got into that series against Tampa and their deadline
27:23additions.
27:24I think that year is like Blake Coleman and Barclay Goodrow were better fits than yours,
27:28which were Nick Ritchie and Andre Kasha.
27:30And it's like, yeah, that, that proved to be pretty decisive.
27:33So you know, I could definitely see this coming down to something like that, where it's like
27:38Bruins, Panthers, they're both going to be right there all year.
27:41They're going to be comfortably in it and then it's going to be who hit, who nails it
27:45at the deadline.
27:46I think it's, you know, you're right.
27:47And I think it's also in terms of the Bruins, like how's that second line produce and you
27:53know, we talk a lot about that potential Zaka Lindholm, Pasternak line, and I think everyone
27:59expects them to be potent and good and effective, but you also wonder like, you know, Marchand
28:03Coyle, Lysel, Marchand Coyle, Frederick, Marchand Coyle, Geeky.
28:08What's that line going to be like?
28:09I mean, what's your secondary scoring going to be like outside of that first line?
28:12And that might be an area where in the advanced analytics and the, and the simulations run,
28:17maybe that's where the Bruins are getting hurt in terms of that.
28:20I think, and you mentioned it earlier in the show, you're not going to have Lena Smallmark.
28:24So there are going to be nights when a Corpus Allo or Jeremy Swayman has a bad night and
28:29you lose, which did not happen much last year because they alternated games and both were
28:33top goalies in the NHL.
28:35So I think that those are all legitimate things.
28:37I've got them first in the Atlantic.
28:38I think that, you know, I like their depth upfront, maybe not so much the scoring on
28:44that second line, but I like what that third line can bring.
28:47And I like what the fourth line can bring in terms of style of play.
28:50And I like, again, like this Doroff thing, the six years was tough.
28:55I still kind of wish they had went for a winger instead of a defenseman, but they did go for
29:01a defenseman and they shored up the top four and you've given low rise some runway.
29:07So again, like, I think you could get a lot out of your third pair this year too, with
29:10low Ryan Peek, most likely down there.
29:13So I think they're a hundred percent cup contenders.

29:18I'd have to make my own power rankings, but I fourth, I wouldn't disagree with, like,
29:22I think they're up there and I think we should have those expectations of them.
29:26I mean, they should a hundred percent on paper win a round and I think win two rounds next
29:32year.
29:33Like I think this is the year, third time's the charm.
29:36You've got to get past Florida and maybe this is a 2019 situation.
29:39And again, we're getting way ahead of ourselves this year, but maybe there's a 2019 situation
29:43next postseason where Florida gets knocked out in the first round by either a Toronto
29:47or a Tampa or maybe an Ottawa.
29:51So again, I think like this is, to me, this is the year you got to, you got to get past
29:57that second round hump.
29:58I think.
29:59Yeah.
30:00Last, like this past season, that was the, that was the reset.
30:04That was the lowered expectations.
30:06That was the, okay, we're going to money ball this thing together with signing and Ben Reeves,
30:13this was always the year that you had the money to spend and you had the chance to really
30:20address like real holes.
30:23And I, you know, look, I, I don't think either Lindholm or Zdorov is like a total 100% grand
30:30slam.
30:31I can't go wrong.
30:32Right?
30:33Like this Lindholm did have a tough year last year.
30:36That's a real, you know, so like this questions there, Zdorov has been inconsistent at times
30:40in the past.
30:42That's legit, but I do think they, they bring a lot of things that this team needed.
30:49And I, I was, I was originally going into free agency.
30:52I was on go get a full, a winger instead of a defenseman.
30:57I've sort of come around a little bit on that because I will get it like we're just kind
31:01of touching on the, on the deadline.
31:03And I think you're more likely to be able to find a winger who can come in and score
31:09and add offense, then find, not necessarily find a defenseman, but find the specific skill
31:16set that Zdorov brings that physicality attitude while still having some mobility and puck
31:23moving skill.
31:24Like, yeah, like you might be able to find a left shot defenseman at the deadline, but
31:29if you're looking for that specific skill set, which I think is really what drew them
31:33to Zdorov, like that's tougher.
31:37You don't know if that exact play is going to be out there.
31:40Zdorov has grown on me.
31:41And I think you also look at the, at both free agents, they fit the mold, they fit what
31:46the Bruins have historically had and what they need.
31:50And they were the best available.
31:51I mean, you weren't getting a better center than Elias Lindholm.
31:55You were not getting a better physical, potentially two-way defenseman than Nikita Zdorov.
32:00I mean, there was Brady Shea out there and guys like that who have more offensive upside,
32:06but like, why would you go out and get a Brady Shea when you have Mason Lowry?
32:09Like you assume Mason Lowry is going to end up becoming that a year or two down the road.
32:13Zdorov is a different animal.
32:14Zdorov is a tough dude.
32:17And that's what I think that's a guy that you need, especially like if they're going
32:20to take down the Panthers, that's a guy you need.
32:23So I agree with you, the Zdorov thing has grown on me.
32:28You know, I still think they're going to be in the market for a winger at the deadline.
32:31Like I think that's going to be priority number one.
32:34Don't shock me if that happens.
32:36Now if goaltending or something else is a priority at the deadline, then things have
32:39went wrong.
32:41But I'm good with, I think that's what's going to end up happening is them needing a winger
32:46at the deadline.
32:47I think we've touched on everything, Scott, it's mid-July.
32:50So you know, there's not a lot of new things to talk about, but you and I have not talked
32:55about a lot of these things in a little while.
32:56So it's nice to catch up.
32:58Right.
32:59You want to spend 10 minutes on the Mark McLaughlin contract, to represent?
33:07I did a podcast with Hags on Wednesday and he immediately was like, all right, sign Mark
33:12McLaughlin.
33:13And I'm like, oh my God.
33:14All right.
33:15We'll talk Mark McLaughlin.
33:16How long you want to do this?
33:17Yeah.
33:18Get a kick out of that stuff.
33:19It is what it is.
33:20Yeah.
33:21I don't think I really have anything new to add there other than I wouldn't rule out him
33:27making a push either, like probably not for second line, but somewhere further down the
33:32lineup, like, I don't know, he's played 14 NHL games and he scored four goals.
33:37So you know, he's, he's in there, he's in the mix.
33:41He's in the mix.
33:42I, I, I don't think he fits the identity of that fourth line that they're looking for.
33:46I think he could be up at some point as like a slot in for a, for an injury, I a hundred
33:50percent think that, but for what they're looking for out of that fourth line, I don't know.
33:56He struggled scoring in Providence a lot.
33:58Yeah.
33:59I don't know about the third line either.
34:01Cause again, they have a lot of those bottom six guys, like that's the thing, like he just,
34:06there's so many.
34:07And to me, like McLaughlin makes more sense going elsewhere and getting an opportunity
34:12somewhere.
34:13Like to me, that's where, like if he went to, you know, a lower end team and played
34:18in their bottom six, I think he could have a really good NHL career or a great start.
34:22And then, you know, go to a better team.
34:24But, um, I just Castellic, Beecher, Brazzo, Jones, Frederick, Geeky, Patra, Merkuloff.
34:34Like I just think there are so many other pieces there and there's only so many spots.
34:39So I just, I don't see him slotting in.

35:05So we've got stuff going, even though, you know, not a whole lot happening at this point
35:10in the summer, but that's why we got to get creative.
35:14We got to, we got to come up with ideas.
35:17I always think, you know, when I'm putting together an episode for like this time of
35:21year, I'm always, you know, I stress out.
35:22I'll be like, Oh my God, like, do I have enough?
35:24And then I think to myself and I'm like, I got through March through July.
35:30And then again, uh, the fall of 2020 with nothing, there was nothing to talk about anyway.
35:38I mean, I I'd have to go back and look at the episodes that I did.
35:42Um, but there was not much to talk about during that time, especially like, I remember doing
35:47episodes with Connor on like, could the Bruins play at Fenway park next year?
35:52Like that's, and we would spend like 25 to 30 minutes just being like, imagine, imagine
35:58like that was what our, that's what it was.
36:01And it's miserable to look back.
36:03Manchester, New Hampshire was going to be one of the regional, yeah, that's right.
36:10There were so many, there were so many topics through that.
36:13I look back and I'm like, how did we do full episodes on that?
36:16Um, and yeah, because it was like the seat that ended March, 2020.
36:21And then I think it went, you know, that went until like July ish.
36:25So that was, you know, month, I remember the Bruins would do like a, a zoom call with a
36:29player or a coach.
36:31Like was it once a day or once a week, um, they would do, yeah, they're spread out a
36:36bit, but yeah.
36:37Which, you know, it was nice because it was like, at least we could get some content out
36:41of those.
36:42Even if it was just like, so have you been able to find a place to skate?
36:47No, like, like here, here's where Jake DuBois is skating in Edmonton.
36:52It was all, it was like, here's what John Moore has been up to.
36:56Um, but yeah.
36:58And then there was that after the season ended in like August, September, um, that time,
37:04like October, November, December, January, that was also like dead.
37:07So yeah, we got through that so we can get through a summer and, you know, make us more
37:12creative.
