Three-time Super Bowl champion and former Patriots LB Ted Johnson joins the show to break down what makes Drake Maye unique, potential defensive fixes and Sundayβs game in Miami. Later, Patriots cornerback Marcus Jones joins for another four-minute drill!

00:00:00All right, it has been too long, but we got the one, the only Ted Johnson, NBC Sports
00:00:17Boston, three times Superbowl champion.
00:00:19He and I are just chatting big time skier and he might find himself in Vegas for the
00:00:23Patriots by week.
00:00:24So even though they're three and eight, uh, they're one of our favorite analysts.
00:00:28You must be 11 to know.
00:00:29I don't know how many games you're playing here, but you're, you're undefeated so far
00:00:32in life.
00:00:33My friend, it's great to have you back.
00:00:34It's a Andrew.
00:00:35It's good to be back, buddy.
00:00:36Um, it's funny that, uh, I reached out to you this week.
00:00:39I really liked you, you, you're, uh, you were crushing it and some of your, uh, just a detailed
00:00:44analysis of the, of the game against the Rams.
00:00:46And so, um, uh, you know, that's what, uh, you know, kind of precipitated us getting
00:00:51together today, which is great.
00:00:52So I got a lot on my mind and I know you, uh, you have a, uh, just a, uh, I don't know,
00:00:59a, a, a voracious, ferocious, voracious appetite for this stuff.
00:01:03And so I'm, I'm looking forward to what chopping it up with you.
00:01:06Yeah.
00:01:07I'm just awaiting our, uh, I don't know if it's annual, but like per episode mentioned
00:01:10a cover to you're just adoration of coverage.
00:01:13I think it, I feel like it's going to come up.
00:01:14You and I previewed Miami last year.
00:01:16You came on the pod very gracious with your time and it was like, you just got to sit
00:01:19back.
00:01:20We want three Superbowls doing this.
00:01:21They're playing a lot of base defense nowadays, like they did back in your day.
00:01:25I know.
00:01:26Do you think we're getting like five minute Mark, 10 minute Mark, 15 minute Mark cover
00:01:29to where we're just going to land, Ted?
00:01:32Yeah, that's a, that's, it's, it is.
00:01:34It is interesting.
00:01:35Um, I mean, the, the, there's just, you know, I have many thoughts on the, on the defense,
00:01:39but you know, it's, it's, and you, you did a really good job kind of again, uh, post
00:01:44game.
00:01:45I liked the breakdown of, you have a different personnel groupings on offense, but then you
00:01:49went over to defense and you, uh, you know, you kind of broke down how, how many snaps
00:01:53in base versus nickel versus dime.
00:01:57And it was interesting to see, you know, kind of the, the 43% in base, which is about what
00:02:03I was playing, uh, my, my last year in the league, which is a little surprising.
00:02:06I mean, I retired 18 years ago.
00:02:08So for them to be playing as much base as they were, uh, is, is interesting, you know,
00:02:13and you also, uh, had an interesting, I think observation is that, you know, they have a
00:02:18difficult time when they are in base stopping the pass.
00:02:21And when they go out there in nickel, they have a difficult time stopping the run.
00:02:26That is a problem because you need to be able to have one defense, whether it's base or
00:02:33nickel, at least it's probably one of those two where you're good at stopping, uh, something,
00:02:39you know, stopping, if you put in base, you, you, you put in place to stop the run, but
00:02:44you can't be vulnerable against the pass either.
00:02:47Right.
00:02:48So you got to be able to die, you know, be really good in one of the, one of those kind
00:02:52of groupings, either, either base or nickel and the, and the Patriots have issues in both
00:02:58of those personnel groupings.
00:03:00And that's, that's a very big problem.
00:03:02And I, and I just quickly, we'll say our teams in the early two thousands, we had, we had
00:03:09one base coverage that are one, uh, a base personnel group that was, if we were ever
00:03:15having problems, we went to it every time and we'd play 34 cover two, and it would be
00:03:19against four wides, three wides.
00:03:22It wouldn't matter.
00:03:23The greatest show on turf.
00:03:24We can put our base defense out there and we all knew what we were doing and we're all
00:03:28proficient at it.
00:03:29And so we, um, we can stop the pass in it and we can stop the run in it.
00:03:33And, uh, and that's, that's, uh, that's something this defense does not, uh, does not have right
00:03:38now.
00:03:39All right.
00:03:40A couple of housekeeping notes.
00:03:41Number one, uh, you have hit your allotment of compliments.
00:03:43I will not hear any more positive words about my work on this podcast.
00:03:46That is it.
00:03:47Thank you for the flowers.
00:03:48But we are, our faces are full, uh, over here.
00:03:51Number two, Cole strangers back in practice today, you and I recording, I probably should
00:03:54have left with this.
00:03:55It's like just over three 30 on Wednesday.
00:03:57So there's no injury report out yet, but with Cole strange back in Christian Barmore and
00:04:02Dietrich twice being the only players are missing in practice today.
00:04:04Safe to say the Patriots are still in similar health.
00:04:07Why is it not play last weekend?
00:04:08Uh, Christian Marmore did play 21 snaps.
00:04:10So she broke down on Monday.
00:04:12He looks rusty.
00:04:14What else would you expect when he's in pads for the first time since then, this is part
00:04:16of a long ramp up, uh, number three, you and I talk movies on here and we're going to get
00:04:22to Drake may who, you know, you, you had a long breakdown in your text to me.
00:04:27And I know you've got a lot of thoughts and you're doing breakdowns with Phil Perry.
00:04:29They're excellent.
00:04:30Watch them every single Monday.
00:04:31And then we're going to get to pass dolphins a little bit later on, but I just, I really
00:04:35enjoy our movie chats and I want to know what you've watched lately.
00:04:39And I need a, an extreme review, something that you absolutely loved and why, or something
00:04:43that you hated and why?
00:04:44Cause my man, Ted Johnson has said the start, just a worldly man and movies are high up
00:04:48there for you.
00:04:49Yeah.
00:04:50You know what I look, there's, there is a movie that came out within the last year.
00:04:54It's basically, it was the prequel to a movie that was released in 2015.
00:04:58And, uh, um, I don't know if you're a fan of the Mad Max franchise, but I, I, I certainly
00:05:04am, you know, going back with what Mel Gibson back in the day, road warrior, I loved those
00:05:08movies.
00:05:09Um, and so, uh, you know, in 2015, uh, what was it, uh, Mad Max three road, uh, excellent,
00:05:17excellent movie.
00:05:18You ready for the Salish movie going story you've ever heard.
00:05:20Yup.
00:05:21Okay.
00:05:22So 2015, I, you and I were just chatting about this.
00:05:24I lived in rural Pennsylvania outside of Hershey.
00:05:27I go to see a movie cause I have nothing else to do on a Saturday where I have two friends,
00:05:30but they live 45 minutes away.
00:05:32I said, you know, people sneak, uh, snacks into the movie theater.
00:05:36I'm going to do that with the backpack.
00:05:38I'm also just going to have a couple of beers because that, that was my life at 24, 25 working
00:05:43high school sports, D three college, just me in the back Saturday matinee.
00:05:47I don't know if you could still call it a matinee, a couple of same man was down and
00:05:50just sheepishly go out of a two and a half hour movie.
00:05:52So, uh, yeah, that was my first guy and it won't be the last guy that's ever snuck beers
00:05:58into a movie theater.
00:05:59I guarantee you that.
00:06:00Yeah.
00:06:01But the prequel you're talking about, that's a Anya Taylor joy, I think came out earlier
00:06:03this year.
00:06:04That's been on my, like, I want to watch this on a plane, but it also just might be
00:06:09too violent.
00:06:10Cause I don't know if there's someone behind me.
00:06:11So it's on my list, but keep going.
00:06:13It is.
00:06:14It is.
00:06:15There is, there is violence.
00:06:16Um, I think, uh, it is not gratuitous violence though.
00:06:19It's so it's a little, it's, you know, there's some blood and there, there, there's, there's
00:06:23a lot of killing, but it's, I don't think they, it's so like in your face, like, uh,
00:06:28you know, if you're watching like a Quentin Tarantino movie.
00:06:31So I think you'd be fine watching it on a plane, but the Furiosa Mad Max saga.
00:06:36So that's the, that's the recent one that came out.
00:06:38Like you said, with, uh, with, uh, you know, Anya Taylor joy, Chris Hemsworth, excellent
00:06:42in it.
00:06:43Um, and I'm a big fan of, of just the, the, you know, how Glenn Miller directs, um, just
00:06:48the coloring, the tenting, the cinematography.
00:06:51If you know me, you know, I'm a fan of the Avatar movies and it's the same kind of thing.
00:06:56It's the, it's the cinematography.
00:06:58It's these big kind of beautiful shots, uh, that they're so creative and kind of making
00:07:03that I think are part of the, why I enjoy the movies.
00:07:07Plus the storyline is good.
00:07:08And I thought Chris Hemsworth, um, continues to just get better and better and, and do
00:07:12roles that are, I wouldn't expect him to be good in, you know, he's, uh, he's, he's funny.
00:07:17Uh, but he, you know, he's, but he doesn't try too hard.
00:07:20It's a more of a subtle humor, um, and, and, and I can respect that.
00:07:24So that would be my, my recommendation is Furiosa Mad Max saga.
00:07:28And then I'll put in a, just a, another one that's completely different, uh, kind of genre.
00:07:33Um, I don't know if you've ever heard of the movie old Henry.
00:07:37It's with Tim Blake Nelson.
00:07:39It's an excellent movie.
00:07:41It's a simple movie.
00:07:42Uh, it's, it's, it's taken like in the late 1800s, early 1900s.
00:07:47Um, and it's about kind of Billy the kid, uh, post Billy the kid when he gets older
00:07:53and, uh, and retires from his earlier kind of shenanigans.
00:07:56Um, and it's just well-written and stylistically, you know, if you've ever seen a movie like,
00:08:01uh, hell or high water, you know, like the movie about the two bank robbers out in West
00:08:06Texas, it's very dialogue driven, but it's really good dialogue.
00:08:10This, uh, that's clever and engaging.
00:08:13And I think the storylines, it will keep you, keep you hooked in.
00:08:16So that's a, uh, that's another one.
00:08:18Um, that's kind of off the radar called old Henry, old Henry.
00:08:22One last question.
00:08:22And then we'll get to football.
00:08:23Cause there's a portion of people who listen to this podcast or shaking their little fists,
00:08:28uh, which they would never do to you in person.
00:08:30Probably me in person.
00:08:31That the fact that we haven't gotten to football, football talk, but you're also very open about
00:08:34the movies that make you cry, Ted.
00:08:36And I'm curious, the last one that you watched sitting at home or otherwise where a little
00:08:39tear rolled down your cheek.
00:08:40Oh God.
00:08:41Oh my gosh.
00:08:42There's so many, I mean, there's, there's just too many, but I mean, just the first
00:08:46one, boom comes to my head right away is a Shawshank redemption.
00:08:50I will rewatching.
00:08:53Oh, are you kidding me every time?
00:08:56I mean, I mean, when, when, when, uh, Andy Dufresne is on that bus going to Mexico to
00:09:03see his good bud red, like, and they build it up and then you see this, the final shot
00:09:08is in pulling away.
00:09:10And then you just see these two little small bodies running towards each other to give
00:09:13each other a hug because they are, they're now out of prison and, uh, and free to do
00:09:18whatever they want together.
00:09:20Come on, are you kidding me?
00:09:21Uh, all day, every day.
00:09:22So I, I cry very, very easy in movies.
00:09:26I am a sucker for it.
00:09:28Any, any storyline that has to do with, you know, a dad and a son, you know, you want
00:09:32to have a catch dad, you know, field of dreams.
00:09:34If you don't cry at the end of field of dreams from that one, if you, you, if you have a
00:09:40dad that's, you know, it'd been involved in your life and it's been there every step of
00:09:44the way, like I've fortunately had, you know, movies like that, when it has that storyline,
00:09:49always get me overcoming addiction and struggle.
00:09:52And, uh, you know, just, uh, abuse is always, are always movies I'm going to relate to,
00:09:59um, just because of my history.
00:10:00And so I cry in a lot of movies, Andrew, it's, uh, it's pretty pathetic, but you know what
00:10:07my kids bust my balls and my, and my girlfriend laughs, but they, they know that it speaks.
00:10:13So I just, I feel things and I'm a very emotional guy.
00:10:16And so movies always bring it out of me, man.
00:10:18Yeah.
00:10:19I love it.
00:10:19Always keeping it real.
00:10:20You don't hear that from a lot of X players, uh, or I would even just say men in public
00:10:25guys.
00:10:26So I appreciate you opening up.
00:10:27Hopefully, uh, Drake may makes a film about his relationship with his father and his brother.
00:10:32He's actually singing his dad's praises today because then we can get the waterworks and
00:10:35some football in, but let's pivot full-time to football.
00:10:38You use the word unique when we were texting the other day about Drake and why you're excited
00:10:43about him.
00:10:43And I share this excitement.
00:10:44I'm working on a column as we, not as we speak, but when we finish up, I will finish
00:10:48writing this column about, look, I'm sold six, six games is a tiny sample to declare
00:10:53a franchise quarterback, but the power of the sample matters.
00:10:57And the power of the sample is so strong, but you having been associated or playing
00:11:00or analyzing the NFL since it's been nineties, we're talking basically 30 years here are
00:11:04calling this kid unique.
00:11:06Why?
00:11:07Um, I'll say, so just lock in.
00:11:08I'll try.
00:11:09I'm going to go fast.
00:11:09Cause you and I tend to, uh, you know, have, we can talk about you and me.
00:11:14And so look, the, the, it is, it is quick for me to kind of, part of me is shocked that
00:11:20I, I, I use the word special to describe a kid that's only started six games.
00:11:25Um, uh, you know, I use the word unique, unique in his own way, um, already through six games.
00:11:31How can you say that?
00:11:33Um, but it's, but that's the way I feel, um, Andrew and, and I'll just quickly go through
00:11:38the things that I think make him unique.
00:11:42Um, and, and just different than really, you know, any other quarterback I've really seen.
00:11:46Um, and it's really because first off, I think the thing that jumps out is just his,
00:11:51is his overall athleticism is his running ability.
00:11:55Um, it's, he, he almost, it's a, it's the best athletes.
00:11:59Andrew are the ones that are out there and they make it look easy, right?
00:12:03I play with guys that were just from a physical standpoint, not, not necessarily,
00:12:08uh, a productive standpoint, um, or achievement standpoint, but just.
00:12:13Ability standpoint, you know, like a Terry Glenn, like a Andrew Katz, a warrior.
00:12:17They're just physically, they were so much better than everyone.
00:12:20They made it, it looked easy from a physical athletic standpoint,
00:12:24watching them play football.
00:12:26They stood out the way Drake made plays football.
00:12:28It just stands out to me how easy from an athletic standpoint.
00:12:33He's making a look.
00:12:34So his running style, smooth, explosive.
00:12:37Um, it's, it's, it's kind of, it kind of, it's unexpected, right?
00:12:42There's a, there's an easiness in which he moves with, uh, when he runs his sleight of
00:12:47hand, I call it a sleight of hand.
00:12:49He'd be a great magician.
00:12:50If you ever just, just watch him carrying out play fakes with his hands, fake here,
00:12:55fake their turn.
00:12:56It's, it's, it's very smooth.
00:12:59It's efficient.
00:13:00Um, it is, it is believable.
00:13:02And it's, it's, uh, you know, it's, you, it just makes it look, he makes it look effortless
00:13:06and it's not easy to do his, his athleticism throwing on the run.
00:13:12Um, is, is unique to it, in my opinion, um, that third and seven down that third and seven
00:13:18play that he had, where he threw across his body as he was jumping, as he was getting
00:13:22hit to, uh, Demario Douglas, who was coming across on a short, uh, you know, crossing
00:13:27route was an unbelievable throw because, and he hit Demario Douglas right in the hands
00:13:33where he needed to take his momentum going for a 20 yard, uh, game.
00:13:37So his ability to throw on the run, I feel is very unique.
00:13:43How many times do we say quarterbacks always get in trouble when they throw across their
00:13:46bodies?
00:13:47All Drake may does is throw across his body two or three times in a game and he completes
00:13:51every one of them.
00:13:52And the only, the ones he doesn't are because there was a penalty on the play and they had
00:13:56to call the playback.
00:13:57So, um, I'm seeing him do things, uh, all these things is that athleticism on the run,
00:14:03um, his ability to throw the different angles.
00:14:06So I'm not done with describing his uniqueness, his ability to throw all the different slot
00:14:10angles.
00:14:10Okay.
00:14:11And then you combine the fact that he can throw on the run with the different slot angles.
00:14:18That's what makes him so unique.
00:14:19All those things make him unique.
00:14:21I mean, there's that, that, that bootleg he had to the left and he throws to a case, Sean
00:14:27booty, um, with a defender in his face is, is, is it, he makes the hard look easy.
00:14:33And that is what is so surprising to me.
00:14:35And so when I say he's got a unique style, all his own, it's because of those things
00:14:40I just mentioned.
00:14:42And I've said this before, so I'm not going to belabor it.
00:14:44And you explained it very well.
00:14:46The word is natural, right?
00:14:48Like he makes it look easy.
00:14:49He also makes it look like something he's been doing for about as long as he's been
00:14:53alive, 22 years.
00:14:55And it's funny that, you know, we talk about this because I audibly laughed in the press
00:14:59conference today.
00:15:00He chatted with us Wednesday.
00:15:01It does every late Wednesday morning.
00:15:03Taylor Kyle from CLNS gives this great question asking about, Hey, when you're looking at
00:15:07the field and you're certain processing things, are you doing this in a way that, again, you
00:15:12talk about like, you know, uh, quantifiable athleticism, oh, this guy runs whatever 40
00:15:16or lifts that much, or he jumps that much.
00:15:18Well, when you see him on the field, it's not as naturally easy moving, right?
00:15:21There's functional athleticism and there's stuff that you can measure.
00:15:24And the question Taylor asked separated those two things.
00:15:28Are you looking at this and saying, okay, it's cover two or cover three, which is more
00:15:32of that very linear kind of processing.
00:15:34You're just saying, well, I'm looking at space and leverage, and that's all that I
00:15:38really care about spatially.
00:15:39And he goes, this is after right before I left.
00:15:42Yeah, cool.
00:15:43I think that kind of comes natural.
00:15:46Of course it does.
00:15:47We can see it and he said it right there, whether it's what you're talking about, the
00:15:50physical or the mental, he's just natural.
00:15:52And you mentioned a couple of plays, and this is an example of this.
00:15:55I can tell you, Ted, that he's 10 of 14 for 95 yards and a touchdown against the blitz
00:16:00on Sunday.
00:16:01But the more impressive part is not the numbers.
00:16:04It's the calm.
00:16:05It's the arm slot.
00:16:06It's the jumping to the side stuff.
00:16:08That's just second reaction, natural reaction, playmaking, and problem solving stuff.
00:16:16Sometimes he's never seen before, but he seems to know the answer because he's not
00:16:20looking at this and overthinking at it when there's a lot of information.
00:16:24He's just very quickly identifying what do I need to do?
00:16:26What are my options?
00:16:27And he gets to the right one, whether it's his legs or throwing or the arming or whatever
00:16:31it is.
00:16:31It's all just so, so natural.
00:16:33It's a great word.
00:16:34It's a great way to describe it.
00:16:35And I want to put one more, two more quick points on this discussion is the other thing
00:16:45that he has that is so impressive of all the things that we're talking about is what
00:16:51I like about if you watch him, the play is never dead to him.
00:16:55He will squeeze every ounce of juice out of that thing he can to make a play.
00:17:04If it's throwing right as he's getting drilled, go back to the Titans game.
00:17:10I mean, that play, that play, him running around, running around, running, and then
00:17:14finally finding, you know, remandering Stevenson in the end zone, he like he went to the very
00:17:20last second of what that play was going to get the most out of and threw that ball up
00:17:27there and for remandering to catch it.
00:17:29It was you see him do that too, where he's as he's rolling out because he's getting flushed
00:17:33out.
00:17:34You see him almost to the boundary.
00:17:36I mean, and then he throws the ball as he's stepping out of bounds.
00:17:39And unfortunately, receiver goes out of bounds and then come back into bounds.
00:17:43And so it's not a touchdown anymore, but he doesn't give up on plays ever.
00:17:47And so that's pretty cool to me, like where you have a chance to the very end of that
00:17:52play because you never know.
00:17:54It looks like Drake's going down or he's about to get hit.
00:17:56And all of a sudden he pops up and throws the ball out in the flat for a, you know,
00:18:00for a for a game.
00:18:01So the kids got this this this way in which he plays again that I just think are unique
00:18:07to him.
00:18:07And then he he does in a lot of ways really look natural that everything looks natural
00:18:12to him.
00:18:13All right, let's put on your defensive coordinator cap here.
00:18:16You're you're in Miami.
00:18:18They've they've they've called you up and said, hey, Ted, we know you're in New England.
00:18:21We need you to consult what you've seen from Drake May.
00:18:23We are going to make you an offer.
00:18:24You can't refuse whatever amount of money that is to give us some tips.
00:18:27How would you defend the kid?
00:18:28You've been watching, studying, analyzing.
00:18:31And what is that answer?
00:18:32What do you expect defenses to do either this Sunday or moving forward?
00:18:35Understanding, OK, six games is a big enough sample to say we feel like we know what he's
00:18:39about.
00:18:40Yeah, it's Ben.
00:18:42First, I would say it's not an easy answer.
00:18:44It's not, you know, and I've I've put some thought into this and it's it's it's a it's
00:18:50a difficult one, right?
00:18:51So it's like, OK, do we, you know, do we sit back and flood the zones and and and let them
00:18:57pick us apart and don't, you know, don't put a lot of guys, you know, put three guys
00:19:00in the rush or four guys in the rush?
00:19:02Well, he's he's good at evading and buying time.
00:19:05And, you know, you know, do we do that or do we, you know, do we sit in the house and
00:19:09we just are we relentless in our blitzing?
00:19:10And I think you have the numbers there.
00:19:12And I couldn't it was so, I mean, incredible, you know, just the blitz both teams blitzing
00:19:19last week.
00:19:20But I mean, they were blitzing Drake May at a at a high clip and he was making them pay
00:19:25every single time.
00:19:26You already gave the numbers.
00:19:27So, like, I think I think he's so natural and and reads things so fast that he's going
00:19:34to he's going to be a great quarterback.
00:19:36Yes, I think he reads it so fast, you know, that that that you almost you expose yourself.
00:19:42So at the end of the day, I think what a lot of what they're trying to get to is running
00:19:47the football and horizontal passing.
00:19:49Right.
00:19:49So that's really the world in which I think the Patriots offense want to live long drives
00:19:54true up the clock, think and dunk down there.
00:19:57Now, you know, you know, the evidence might suggest otherwise.
00:20:00I mean, here's the thing is Drake will take a shot.
00:20:03He is not afraid to throw down field.
00:20:05But for the most part, the Patriots offense wants to work in that, you know, that box,
00:20:10that small box.
00:20:11So I would you know, if I'm doing I would take away his first read.
00:20:15I would not blitz him.
00:20:17I would send three, maybe in four guys in at the most.
00:20:21I would not.
00:20:22And I would sit back and play coverage and really, really, really do very, very be very
00:20:28disciplined in your in your in your rush.
00:20:30If you want to rush three, keep one guy in as a spy.
00:20:34Right.
00:20:35I would I would do that.
00:20:36So maybe not send all your your resources to to pass rush and not all your resources
00:20:43to to in coverage kind of keep it a balanced pass rush and coverage with a spy.
00:20:49Sometimes if you're only going to rush three or four guys, you know, it's hard to keep
00:20:53those guys disciplined.
00:20:54So a spy kind of shadowing Drake May to me, it was probably a great way because I think,
00:21:01you know, he you know what?
00:21:02Even though he hasn't been pulling the ball down and running as much lately, if you're
00:21:06only rushing three guys or four guys like I'm suggesting, then then then I would expect
00:21:12him to maybe, you know, take off and run more because he's got to hold the ball longer.
00:21:16Keep him holding that ball longer so that you flush them out eventually and then have
00:21:21that spy there to shadow him.
00:21:22That's I like that.
00:21:23Anything I can come up with.
00:21:25I like that for third down in particular because you do mention the scrambles have gone down.
00:21:29That's something, you know, our friend, colleague Phil Perry has noted Astrod Mayo about today
00:21:34saying, hey, if he's not scrambling as much, might you involve him in the QB run game?
00:21:37And I think that could really help in the red zone, but that's a separate topic.
00:21:40I think third down spy is a good idea.
00:21:42I think where I start on early downs is a lot more muddled rush, you know, like the
00:21:47old kind of contain rushing, you know, this don't get past the level of a quarterback
00:21:51because when you look at when he's doing his most damage, it's very often when he's creating
00:21:56and FTN fantasy had this chart that went up today where he's creating among quarterbacks,
00:22:00meaning you're outside the pocket and it's after your first read at the second highest
00:22:06rate in the league, meaning he's doing this more often than everybody else in the league,
00:22:09except for Jalen Hurts.
00:22:10And when he's doing this, he's fifth in EPA per play when he's created.
00:22:15So you heard Bill talk about this back in the day, you heard him say this even like
00:22:19last year, the year before, just keep him in the pocket.
00:22:22Like when he's his most dangerous is when he gets to play that backyard ball and play
00:22:26entirely on instinct and reflect.
00:22:28So I'm trying to keep him in there as best as possible.
00:22:30It doesn't mean he won't escape because I think the point about a spy is a good one.
00:22:34You can't play the whole game with a spy.
00:22:35I think that's my starting point is we'll disguise as best we can and rush with four,
00:22:41but in a kind of a muddled rush.
00:22:43So he keeps in there and doesn't do what he wants to do, which is often get to his right
00:22:46and then really hurt you either scrambling or scrambling to then throw.
00:22:50It's true.
00:22:51I love that.
00:22:52I love that number.
00:22:52I mean, there's some really cool stats out there on Drake May that highlight his athleticism
00:22:58is EPA while he while he's out of the pocket.
00:23:02That's pure athleticism.
00:23:03That's somebody making something out of nothing.
00:23:06And that's that that's that's that alone speaks to his special athletic gifts.
00:23:11Yeah, but mostly just best of best of luck.
00:23:14Dolphins get get them while you can.
00:23:16It's a UConn fan.

00:23:42you have players and they give you stats.
00:23:43And if you think that player is going to get more than that stat, it could be passing yards.
00:23:47It could be rushing yards.
00:23:48It could be touchdowns.
00:23:49It could be goal scored.
00:23:50If you want to go to hockey or points, if you want to go to basketball, you pick more
00:23:53or less on that player.

00:24:26All right.
00:24:26I asked you to be a consultant for the enemy.
00:24:28I'm going to bring you back.
00:24:29Patriots say, okay, we know the Dolphins are calling you, Ted.
00:24:33We're going to give you even more money than that.
00:24:35Help us with the 30th ranked defense in the league by DVOA.
00:24:40We are 31st.
00:24:41That's second worst in the league against the past.
00:24:45And we are 28th against the run and improvement, but still bottom five because the Patriots
00:24:50tackle well and they stink and you've called, you know, in private.
00:24:53And I've done the same thing in my column.
00:24:56Covington, an arrogant or stubborn play caller.
00:24:58So what makes you say that?
00:25:00And then B, what changes are you making to the defense given the talent available?
00:25:05Look, I don't like being saying, you know, being critical.
00:25:11I know how hard playing defense is and I've never met DeMarcus, but he seems like a good guy.
00:25:16But I got to, you know, if I see something, I try to shoot people straight.
00:25:20And that's exactly how I feel.
00:25:21I feel there is an ego.
00:25:25Let's just say an ego involved in the in the defensive play calling.
00:25:29And look, I mean, functionally, I understand why you blitz.
00:25:34Like, look, you don't have dominating pass rushers.
00:25:38And so you have to send maybe more guys to create pressure.
00:25:44But there's a smart way to do it and a dumb way to do it.
00:25:49And I wonder sometimes that I see here, I see all first year new head coach coaches,
00:25:55head coach, position coaches.
00:25:57DeMarcus Covington is a first year defensive coordinator.
00:26:00You know, this is this team, even though it was it was Tom Brady, you know, right behind
00:26:08Tom Brady was a culture of defense here and smart defense and situational defense.
00:26:15And what I feel like is at time, maybe this coach, you know, is trying to put his stamp
00:26:20on it.
00:26:20He wants to have a game plan that everyone around the league is talking about, you know,
00:26:25that it's going to impress everybody.
00:26:26And you can turn on that Chicago game from two weeks ago and you can sit there.
00:26:31And if I'm DeMarcus, I'm having a big cigar and I'm, you know, I'm having a couple of
00:26:36beers after that one, because it's that's how you want every game to go.
00:26:41The only problem is it was the Chicago Bears against their rookie quarterback who, you
00:26:46know what, Bill Belichick did the same thing.
00:26:49He feasted on young quarterbacks, you know, that were on bad coaching staffs with with
00:26:56his defense.
00:26:56He could do it, you know, like in his sleep.
00:26:59So that to me isn't that impressive.
00:27:01That's what we've done around here for forever.
00:27:03And so, you know, they don't, you know, so I always worry sometimes that you're that
00:27:10maybe, you know, DeMarcus is trying to make a name for himself, put his stamp on it.
00:27:14I kind of compared to how offensive coordinators back in the day when we played Mike Martz
00:27:19in the Super Bowl in 2001.
00:27:21You know, if Mike Martz, he didn't let his ego get in the way.
00:27:23If he just handed the ball off to Marshall Falk, because we were in basically dime and
00:27:27nickel the whole game, an average six yards of pop, he could have won that game.
00:27:31But no, no, no, no.
00:27:32It's the greatest show on turf.
00:27:33The whole world's watching.
00:27:34We got to throw it downfield and get, you know, our receivers heads knocked off.
00:27:40And just be stubborn about it.
00:27:42And I quite kind of offensive coordinator really flexing his, you know, hey, look how
00:27:50smart I am, my football acumen.
00:27:51You do that by coming up with cool play, you know, passing designs in place in the passing
00:27:56game, not in the running game.
00:27:58Same thing with the defensive coordinator.
00:27:59I think sometimes they try to make their mark with creative blitzing, disguising, being
00:28:05vertical, using guys, one position, one snap, the next position in their plans.
00:28:10OK, that's again, you can do that against the Chicago Bears.
00:28:14You can't do that against the Hall of Fame quarterback.
00:28:16That just doesn't that doesn't make sense.
00:28:18And so that was that to me.
00:28:22There's a lot of ego again, that that blitz call on second down the second play of the
00:28:27second half.
00:28:28You know what?
00:28:28Like, let's let's ease into the second half.
00:28:30There's no reason to take to me.
00:28:32That is such a risky call at that point in the field, one wrong move by Jonathan Jones
00:28:39and the guy is gone and you're doing it from second level.
00:28:43It made no sense at all.
00:28:44And so there's a lot of question marks with the defensive play calling.
00:28:50That is for sure.
00:28:51And so I have I've had issues with that all season long.
00:28:54And what do you do?
00:28:56I mean, you part of me thinks get good at just one group.
00:29:03All right.
00:29:04If you're having if you can't stop the run, excuse me, the pass in a base, get better
00:29:09at it, rep it, have your outside linebackers working jams, make sure that everyone knows
00:29:14at least one defense and a personnel group like inside and out.
00:29:19And so that when things get hairy, you at least can stop the bleeding pass and run with
00:29:25one group.
00:29:26Right now, they don't they don't have that.
00:29:28So I would I would really concentrate on that.
00:29:31I just think they're blitzing when you do blitz.
00:29:34Don't do it from second level anymore.
00:29:36You're not going to get there fast enough.
00:29:37You don't have the guys on the outside to cover that long.
00:29:41Make sure you execute them better.
00:29:42And on that second and seven blitz, that 69 yard touchdown to Cooper Cup, they ran
00:29:50twists on the edges.
00:29:51OK, that takes a split second longer when you run tea games on the edges.
00:29:58You know, when you have one, the outside, the inside guy going out and the outside guy
00:30:01going in that head, that makes it a tad bit longer before you get there.
00:30:06And it also muddies up the lanes for the guys blitzing from the second level.
00:30:10And so the play he had all day to pass and he had six guys to block seven.
00:30:15And so it was just a poorly, I thought, a poor decision to call that play.
00:30:19But it was really bad execution, too.
00:30:21So if you can't blitz and you can't make your blitzes impactful, stop doing it.
00:30:28Stop.
00:30:28Stop blitzing.
00:30:30I agree.
00:30:31I think the point about, OK, what are we good at?
00:30:34And let's just major in that is the right approach.
00:30:37Like, keep it simple.
00:30:38This is not a time when you are this bad against passing that bad against the run to say the
00:30:42answers are to do more and to do newer things.
00:30:45Double down on what you're good at.
00:30:46And again, we just said they're not good against either.
00:30:48But the personnel package that I think could kind of thread this needle is a three safety
00:30:54look where they did this very often with Miles Bryant, where, again, you've got lighter personnel.
00:31:01Yeah, yeah.
00:31:01And he would bounce between nickel and then safety depending on whatever kind of call
00:31:06they want.
00:31:07So that's a player that's able to tie those that the three corner nickel looks in the
00:31:12three safety nickel looks together based on whether you want to play to safety when he
00:31:16would rotate back.
00:31:17We don't play single high if he rotates down.
00:31:19Sometimes that was over a slot receiver.
00:31:21Sometimes it wasn't.
00:31:21But the point being, you kind of split the difference between the base where you can't
00:31:27defend the pass, but you have five defensive backs who can do that.
00:31:30And if you keep Kyle Duggar in the box plus Jalen Hawkins, and then I would use Jonathan
00:31:35Jones or Marcus Jones in this role, and they have but commit one or the other.
00:31:38I think Jonathan Jones is still a better outside corner than Marcus Jones.
00:31:41So let Marcus Jones have that role and keep him up high if you can.
00:31:44So Jalen Hawkins and Kyle Duggars closer to the box when you need to go single high, but
00:31:49made more three safety of that group.
00:31:50Because I just don't think even with Christian Barmore back, Ted, that they have the depth
00:31:54up front to withstand long drives against running teams or certainly the speed at the
00:32:00second level with four linebackers to cover receivers that you're just going to see in
00:32:05today's league.
00:32:06I like it.
00:32:06No, I like it.
00:32:07I like it.
00:32:07You know, especially I would love it if Gabriel Peppers was still active and playing for this
00:32:13team.
00:32:13Then it's just a little bit more beef.
00:32:15A guy will put his head in there.
00:32:18You know, Kyle Duggar will.
00:32:20But, you know, it just I hear you.
00:32:23That's interesting.
00:32:23I that's a good idea.
00:32:25And then as far as, you know, just kind of, you know, stopping the run.
00:32:28Look, can I just I gotta I gotta unfortunately call out one guy.
00:32:32Can we find a replacement for Danny Equality?
00:32:35I mean, God bless him.
00:32:36He does the best of what God gives him.
00:32:38But he's not a down in down out guy.
00:32:40You can't that guy gets pushed off the line, you know, on most most running plays where
00:32:46there's a double team on him.
00:32:47And so it's just there's there's a big time weakness to me at that right defensive tackle
00:32:52spot.
00:32:53So I don't know how you fix that.
00:32:56But that to me is a glaring kind of issue for this team.
00:32:59Yeah, it's, you know, on Danny Equality, because I said this before, and it blew my mind when
00:33:03it happened.
00:33:04He surpassed his single high, his single season career high for snaps played in a year
00:33:10against Tennessee.
00:33:12So week nine, half point of the season, he's going, I've played more snaps than I ever
00:33:16had before.
00:33:16He now has a bone bruise on his elbow, which isn't to excuse the play.
00:33:20This is just context of what's going on because he had to play more with Christian Barber
00:33:23out and Peppers is a good point.
00:33:24Like they didn't plan on losing guys like Bentley and Peppers, you know, for the entire
00:33:29season they have.
00:33:30They got to make do.
00:33:30And they played a lot of three safety before.
00:33:32I just think, too, that would also help solve.
00:33:34And you've seen the teams do this, especially the West Coast teams.
00:33:37They go tempo early against the Pats.
00:33:40Test that communication.
00:33:41Test your alignment.
00:33:42Make sure you're in the eyes are in the right place.
00:33:43So if you're sticking with that same personnel grouping, and it's just incumbent on, let's
00:33:47just stick with Marcus Jones.
00:33:48Christian Gonzalez, Jonathan Jones are outside Marcus Jones, and we're going to call for
00:33:52three corner nickel sets or concepts, you know, bump down.
00:33:56If we're calling three safety, the personnel is the same.
00:33:58You're just going to spin up top because he played safety in college.
00:34:01Got a little bit in the NFL.
00:34:02That's that's what I would like to see.
00:34:04We talked a lot about the defense, and let's go back to the offense for a second because
00:34:07you have an answer for this, and I'm going to lead off one thing that the Patriots are
00:34:12doing or not doing that the media and fans are just should be paying a little bit more
00:34:15attention to.
00:34:16What are we glossing over talking about?
00:34:18Drake May the run defense, the game plans, all this different stuff.
00:34:21Minors faster starts when you look at the second drive against L.A.
00:34:24Touchdown second drive against Chicago field goal 13 points in that first half opening
00:34:30drive missed field goal at Tennessee before that second drive touchdown against the Jets
00:34:33and an opening drive touchdown versus Jacksonville.
00:34:36So since week six, Ted, when Drake May came in and started quarterback, the Patriots are
00:34:41ninth in total EPA when passing in the first quarter.
00:34:45So first quarter passing their ninth in EPA, even better than that.
00:34:49And the shock me when they are running the ball in the first quarter, their fourth in
00:34:54EPA per play.
00:34:56Yeah, yeah, it's what happens after the script.
00:34:59When you get through the first 15, it's going to fall apart.
00:35:02But you needed faster starts.
00:35:04We talked about this at the beginning of the season.
00:35:06They had it against Cincinnati fast enough against Seattle to stay competitive.
00:35:10That's how they need to operate as of late, even in the losses.
00:35:14They're starting fast enough.
00:35:16Yeah, I love that, man.
00:35:17I love that stat.
00:35:18I look I can't believe you because you and I same brain just to kind of piggyback off
00:35:23of that there.
00:35:24So their their their highest scoring, their second highest scoring quarter is the first
00:35:29quarter.
00:35:29And I think it's I think you're right.
00:35:31I like that they do get off to decent start.
00:35:33So I mean, they've gone three now on the first opening drive, but then they've backed it
00:35:36up with a nice long drive to either field goal or or touchdown.
00:35:40And so they scored 24 points in the first quarter in the Drake May starts.
00:35:47But what I found interesting was how the game finished.
00:35:52So, you know, why is he why is it so fun to watch this team?
00:35:56It is they might not win games, but it feels like they're going to be in them at the end.
00:36:01And Drake may give you a chance to win.
00:36:03By far, their highest scoring quarter in the Drake May starts have been the fourth quarter.
00:36:08And so, you know, fast starts, strong finishes.
00:36:13That to me is kind of a good I like that that trend.
00:36:17I mean, you want to be great in every single quarter.
00:36:19But if you were to ask me, what are the most important quarters to be,
00:36:22you know, playing your best?
00:36:24I'd say the first and fourth.
00:36:26So that's the interesting.
00:36:27So what I you know what?
00:36:28I'm having a hard time with this question.
00:36:31It doesn't feel right to maybe pick one guy out.
00:36:34But I feel like Mike on Wayne was a big contract this offseason.
00:36:38You know, and look, I know it take, you know, offensive line is a,
00:36:42you know, it's a, you know, collective thing.
00:36:44But I just feel like he's been a huge disappointment.
00:36:47Now he is playing probably a little better.
00:36:48But boy, I thought the way Mike on Wayne, who started the season, I thought was terrible.
00:36:53I thought he was as big of a problem as everyone else on the offense line.
00:36:57And then another one just is kind of what the tight end group's doing.
00:37:01You know, it's like, OK, it's, you know, look, you know,
00:37:05the top receiver on the team is Hunter Henry.
00:37:07OK, a tight end.
00:37:08And two of the top four receivers on the team are tight ends.
00:37:11You know, Austin Hooper's in there at number four with 23 catches.
00:37:15That little personnel group, 12, and he broke it down.
00:37:1812 personnel is their money group.
00:37:20I mean, they have their best success running or throwing out of that group.
00:37:25So just 12, you know, we're not going back to 2011.
00:37:28This is not Bronc and Hernandez kind of stuff.
00:37:31But it's a poor man's version of it.
00:37:34Right.
00:37:35And so I think that's a very poor man.
00:37:39This man doesn't even have a Folgers can.
00:37:41That's how poor he is with the split.
00:37:44Hooper jersey.
00:37:44Yeah, that's right.
00:37:46So that's that's the those are the only couple of things I really thought
00:37:49of that people really maybe aren't paying enough attention to.
00:37:52Yeah.
00:37:53And there's not a whole lot to unearth at this stage of the season.
00:37:56Right.
00:37:56It's week 12.
00:37:56You know what the team is.
00:37:58You know who you're playing.
00:37:59Quarterbacks get talked about a ton.
00:38:01Receivers, coaching, all that different stuff.
00:38:03But like this, this is what we're here for.
00:38:04I think that's a good point because Austin Hooper might miss Sunday's game.
00:38:08Again, we don't have the injury report yet.
00:38:09They'll still have two more days of practice.
00:38:11They'll travel and fly.
00:38:12We might not know until Saturday if they rule him out or rule anything about it.
00:38:15But he was limping after the game against the Rams, and we'll see what Miami brings.
00:38:20All right.
00:38:21If you were going to Miami like I am, I would encourage you to do one thing.
00:38:24It's not go to the beach.
00:38:25It's not grab beers.
00:38:26It's not going really anywhere except for game time because they will have the lowest
00:38:30price guarantee for any tickets, whether that's University of Miami, it's Pat's
00:38:33Dolphins, or if you want to go to Pat's Colts when the Patriots come back or even the Celtics
00:38:37who ended the undefeated start for the Cavs Tuesday night at the Garden.
00:38:41Awesome game.
00:38:42If you want to go to any of those games or concerts or shows, go to game time where they
00:38:46have a new feature.
00:38:46Game time picks, filters out all the fluff, only gives you incredible deals on great seats.
00:38:51You don't have to waste time searching and doing all the fees and all this.
00:38:54It's all in.
00:38:55It's up front with the lowest price guarantee.
00:38:57And if you find a lower price elsewhere, don't call me, call game time, and they'll give
00:39:01you 110% of the difference from that price.
00:39:04So go now, download the game time map, create an account, use code CLNS for $20 off your
00:39:08first purchase.
00:39:09I would do this, but I've already done it.
00:39:11Terms do apply.
00:39:12Again, create an account, redeem code CLNS for $20 off your first purchase.
00:39:16Concerts, shows, games, Patriots, Celtics, Red Sox when they come back.
00:39:20Bruins now.
00:39:20Just download game time today because what time is it?
00:39:23It's game time.
00:39:24All right.
00:39:24It is actually quickly time for Ted.
00:39:27We have two listener questions I did not prepare you with, and then we're going to get through
00:39:32a very speedy Pats Dolphins preview and then make some game picks.
00:39:36So question number one.
00:39:38I like this one.
00:39:39And if you don't have an answer, I will buy you some time.
00:39:42Carlos.
00:39:43Hey, Andrew, is there a second half of the season sleeper that you could see breaking
00:39:47out or earning a bigger role on either side of the ball?
00:39:51Carlos's vote is for Alex Austin.
00:39:54Corner just got activated off IR, but he thinks that's wishful thinking.
00:39:58I don't think that's so bad.
00:39:59What do you think?
00:40:00Second half sleeper.
00:40:01Look, can I in this to me?
00:40:03This would be one of the things I would if I could change going forward on offense or
00:40:09defense.
00:40:09What I would change on offense is I would I would play more Marcus Jones on offense.
00:40:16He was out there for a couple of plays.
00:40:17He got the ball.
00:40:18I just put the ball in Marcus Jones hands is exciting to me.
00:40:23And there's something there I would I would I would slowly integrate him more and more
00:40:28into the offense.
00:40:29I think he just with that, with his explosive ability, with Drake Mays athleticism, I think
00:40:36that's something that you can you can really kind of really support.
00:40:41So they would be that would be my number one thing, put Marcus Jones on offense more and
00:40:46build packages with him.
00:40:48And so, you know, look, you got you got the screen game kind of hit.
00:40:53If the running game can just give you something, just give just, you know, just don't
00:40:59be terrible at running a football.
00:41:00Get some positive on our first down.
00:41:02It is opens up so many other avenues for play action, for cool screens.
00:41:07I mean, a missile screens, bubble screens, tight end screens, traditional screens, and
00:41:11then add like a Marcus Jones on a reverse jet sweep type stuff.
00:41:15All right.
00:41:15Now you're now you're making, you know, something out of nothing here.
00:41:19Now you're throwing in some things that I think, you know, won't make this offense as
00:41:25predictable as it is.
00:41:26And I think there is some predictability in the play calling on offense as well.
00:41:29My answer is your old position.
00:41:32So you only talk to miss the first half of the season of PUP.
00:41:35I think they want to make it work with him.
00:41:37He got a two year deal for agency, and it's not like, you know, if he doesn't play a whole
00:41:41lot this year, he's guaranteed a roster spot next year.
00:41:42There's not many guarantees in there, but like he's a fast flowing sideline to sideline
00:41:48guy.
00:41:48They just put Curtis Jacobs on IR who was a rookie behind him who might have seen some
00:41:52snaps.
00:41:53Obviously, that won't for the next four weeks.
00:41:54So the opportunity is there.
00:41:56The motivation, a guy that did not play in the first half of the season, by definition,
00:41:59it has to do more in the second half.
00:42:02That would that would be my answer.
00:42:03Kurt, what can Jalen Polk do to gain momentum heading into year two?
00:42:07OK, so we've already given up.
00:42:08Oh, no, he hasn't.
00:42:09During the remainder of the season.
00:42:10So what can Jalen Polk do to salvage what's left of this season?
00:42:14Or is it salvageable at all?
00:42:16What would you tell him?
00:42:18Oh, you know what?
00:42:20And I would I would maybe just is this might sound ridiculous.
00:42:25But just get him, have him like challenge him about being a blocker in a run game.
00:42:31Like, let's just get you let's get you like in a mindset, you know, and then you kind
00:42:37of work off of that, you know, quick little curl routes.
00:42:41But like, just, you know, like, you know, can you block for us?
00:42:44We want to buy.
00:42:45We need you're a tough.
00:42:46I don't know.
00:42:46I mean, he's kind of small.
00:42:47Is he small?
00:42:48I don't know.
00:42:48He kind of looks small to me, but I don't know.
00:42:50Just can you can you get him involved in the game if it's not?
00:42:54You know, start small, like what you're talking about, like simple stuff.
00:42:57Yeah, just, you know, you know, kind of, you know, and I would, you know, maybe design
00:43:04a play or two early in the game where it's a catch and run situation, you know, maybe
00:43:12like a missile screen or a bubble screen, something to kind of get him going as opposed
00:43:17to something down the field in traffic, you know, where he hears footsteps and where it's
00:43:23just, you know, you know, something something outside the numbers.
00:43:27I don't know.
00:43:28It's just it's not a good chance he's going to catch it when you throw it to him.
00:43:31So, you know, kind of like the touchdown pass he had a couple of weeks ago.
00:43:36It was just a it was a play designed for him with the hopes that he'd be as open as he
00:43:42was.
00:43:42And he was and he caught it.
00:43:43So something things like that, just that you feel are high success rate type plays to get
00:43:51him going, especially early in the game.
00:43:53Yeah, I like it.
00:43:54I, you know, it comes to mind is the old coaching trick of the coach shows a struggling player
00:44:00film of his old self, like having a great game.
00:44:03You're like, hey, this is what it looks like, you know, and sometimes it's just you get
00:44:06so mired in like what you're screwing up and little details that you consume by all of
00:44:10the struggles that you just need to get pulled out for a second by your own performance and
00:44:14just watch it again.
00:44:15I like he would have to go back to training camp for that kind of tape or obviously back
00:44:20to College of Washington where he started.
00:44:22But I think that would be my my answer.
00:44:25But even, you know, even Washington, man, like, you know what?
00:44:28And that's that's on coaches.
00:44:30That's that's when the coaches got to be creative and maybe, you know, that it should be.
00:44:35That's not a that's a good suggestion.
00:44:36And that to me is more like, hey, as a coach, put together a highlight tape of Jalen Polk.
00:44:42You know what?
00:44:42Have him come in early or after practice after he's already showered.
00:44:46Be like, bro, just I'm just going to I'm going to leave the room.
00:44:49I'm going to shut the door.
00:44:51I want you to watch this and and, you know, that kind of stuff.
00:44:55Players players respond to that.
00:44:56That's on the coaches to try and that their job isn't just to tell them where to line
00:45:00up.
00:45:00Their job is to to motivate them and get put a carrot in front of them.
00:45:04So you get the best out of them.
00:45:06That's part of their job, too.
00:45:07No doubt motivate and organize.
00:45:09All right.
00:45:10On to Miami.
00:45:11They're four and six, 24th best team in the league by DV away.
00:45:15Obviously, to his injury is interferes with how good they really are.
00:45:19They're probably better than that.
00:45:20If he plays the whole season, he did not.
00:45:22They are 25th in offense.
00:45:23The ranking again would be higher to it was available the whole season.
00:45:2621st in defense, 16th on special teams to it came back four weeks ago.
00:45:31This is what happened.
00:45:32Then they lost 28 to 27 at home versus Arizona.
00:45:36Go to Buffalo.
00:45:36Lose a close one, 30 to 27.
00:45:39Go to Los Angeles.
00:45:40Beat the Rams on Monday night, 23 to 15.
00:45:43And last weekend when another one versus the Raiders, 34 to 19.
00:45:47What you're seeing over the stretch.
00:45:48More pressure from a good defense.
00:45:50Kaleas Campbell, who I don't think overlapped with you, but there's one guy in the league.
00:45:55My guy's amazing.
00:45:56That guy's amazing.
00:45:57He's he's played for 30 years and he's he's a big he's a big boy.
00:46:02That's you know, that's a big body to take care of, man.
00:46:05I mean, Kaleas Campbell, he's one of the like he's a guy you stand next to and you
00:46:10you feel so insignificant.
00:46:11He's a massive, massive man.
00:46:13It's a great point.
00:46:14Yeah, I know.
00:46:15That's impressive, right?
00:46:16Him and Mercedes Lewis, man.
00:46:18Those two guys, they're still playing.
00:46:21Oh, 506 draft for Mercedes.
00:46:24So you guys, I think overlap.
00:46:28My last year officially was 2004.
00:46:30I retired in the summer of 05.
00:46:32OK, so my last year was the Super Bowl year against Philly, our third Super Bowl.
00:46:37There you go.
00:46:38So Kaleas Campbell still doing it.
00:46:39He leads in with four sacks.
00:46:41I mentioned to a completing.
00:46:43This is best in League 73.4 against 73.4% of his passes for 1443 yards, nine touchdowns,
00:46:51four picks.
00:46:52This offense is no longer the giant big play explosive attack.
00:46:56This is very much a success rate.
00:46:59Steady Eddie offense, and they're just as good at it.
00:47:01Devon H.
00:47:02And they're running back leading rusher and receiver when you go by total receptions
00:47:06because Tyree kill is dealing with hand injury.
00:47:07He's having games where he gets like seven catches and only goes for 61 yards.
00:47:11But again, it works.
00:47:12They stay on schedule.
00:47:13It was exceptionally accurate.
00:47:15So we're going to go with the three to one, three matchups, two keys, one wildcard thought,
00:47:19which in this case is going to be an old story.
00:47:21And we'll get out of here.
00:47:22OK, two matchups from you.
00:47:24You're going to pass the offense of this is going to come down to this matchup or that
00:47:28one.
00:47:28What is the this?
00:47:29What is the that?
00:47:30All right, maybe I don't know.
00:47:30I hope you're OK with the answer I came up with, but I'm going to make it very, very
00:47:34simple.
00:47:35This to me is is a game where it can come down to really coaching.
00:47:39Like I thought last week's game, like you see good coaching from the Rams.
00:47:44Like if you watch football long enough, you know what to look for.
00:47:47Like the way that the Dolphins on offense were out leveraging the Patriots with their
00:47:52motions and using fast motions.
00:47:54And you can see those little short burst motions were screwing up.
00:47:58It was really kind of getting the head of the Patriots defense.
00:48:00And and they would they would they would use motion to get mismatches and get the Patriots
00:48:06defense out leveraged so that they were easy kind of throws to make.
00:48:10You know, they choose this one.
00:48:11There's an area where no one is because they were able to out leverage them by good coaching
00:48:15and putting guys in the right place to kind of succeed.
00:48:18So this to me, this is a big the Dolphins remind me a little bit of the Rams stylistically,
00:48:23you know, kind of.
00:48:25Right.
00:48:26And so from it, you got to you have a good quarterback and two with a great offensive
00:48:31mind and Mike McDaniel.
00:48:32You got a Hall of Fame quarterback in Matthew Stafford with a with a great offensive mind
00:48:37and Sean McVay.
00:48:38So and so, you know, to me, it's going to come down to coaching Mike McDaniel versus
00:48:45DeMarcus Covington.
00:48:46There was a lot of coaching kind of what I thought if you from a schematic standpoint,
00:48:52watching football, you know, there were defensive issues around coaching last week against the
00:48:59Rams, you know, based on, you know, questionable times to blitz.
00:49:04Why are you blitzing at the rate that you were you were blitzing?
00:49:07Why were you playing Christian Gonzalez on the boundary and not just simply putting him
00:49:12on their best player?
00:49:14Why didn't you make adjustments after you had a game plan that you thought was going
00:49:18to work?
00:49:18And when it wasn't working, you know, you kept going back to why didn't you make any
00:49:22adjustments?
00:49:23So it's going to be the same type of dynamic in this game.
00:49:26Andrew, it's going to be coaching on coaching.
00:49:29So Mike McDaniel versus Covington.
00:49:31And then I'm going to go to the other side.
00:49:33I think you can almost say the same thing on the other side, AVP versus Anthony Weaver.
00:49:37You know, the Miami Dolphins defense is starting to play a little bit better.
00:49:40But don't look now.
00:49:42The New England Patriots offense is starting to play a little bit better.
00:49:44And so you're starting to see some more creative play calling from from Alex Van Pelt.
00:49:51Hey, what do you know?
00:49:52They get they get down to the, you know, down to the goal line, but then they can't punch
00:49:56it in.
00:49:57What is Alex Van Pelt going to do to combat the issues they've had in the red zone?
00:50:01What what creativity can he come up with?
00:50:03And so, you know, and then the same thing for, you know, Anthony Weaver on the on the
00:50:07Dolphins defense.
00:50:08I just think it'll be a cat and mouse game from a coaching standpoint from both both
00:50:13sides of of the line.
00:50:15And I think that's what makes this kind of a fun, fun, you know, game to to kind of get
00:50:20to watch on Sunday.
00:50:22And it almost happened last Sunday against Rams where you're right.
00:50:26And there were a lot of motions that reminded me of Miami.
00:50:28And I'm like, oh, they steal that from the Dolphins.
00:50:31And like McVeigh and McDaniel come from the same tree, obviously.
00:50:33But it was, you know, partly like that cheap motion.
00:50:36But it would just be to get one receiver in these 12 personnel sets motion across into
00:50:42a twins formation.
00:50:42But he would go outside of the near side receiver.
00:50:46And what that did was widen out the corner that was on that side.
00:50:49And the guy who now became the slot would just run a little stop route.
00:50:52And you're like, it's zone.
00:50:54It creates some space.
00:50:54And I'm like, Miami does that all the time.
00:50:56All the time.
00:50:57And it's with those two yards after catch player.
00:50:58So I think it's a good point.
00:51:00The thing that opens almost happened Sunday but did not is the Patriots almost won despite
00:51:05being outcoached.
00:51:06In my opinion, to your point, that cannot happen on Sunday.
00:51:10They stink in Miami.
00:51:12This is their bigger underdogs than they were at home against the Rams on Sunday.
00:51:17They need to at least come to a draw against those guys who, again, I think McDaniel and
00:51:20Weaver are doing better as the season goes along.
00:51:22You need to at least, again, have a draw or ideally, ideally, I'll coach them for your
00:51:28team to win.
00:51:28The matchup I have is on field.
00:51:30John O.
00:51:31Smith, old pal John O.
00:51:32Smith broke out for 101 yards against the Raiders last week.
00:51:36Granted, the Raiders are worse than stink.
00:51:38They suck.
00:51:39But Kyle Duggar, even though he's back, we've seen opposing offensive coordinators kind
00:51:44of pick on him in man to man coverage for years, even in the red zone.
00:51:47And whether they got completed or not, they're still trying.
00:51:50So whether it's him or Jalen Hawkins or Del Pettis, an undrafted rookie who gave up that
00:51:55first touchdown to Cooper Cup, I expect the Dolphins to go after them in this kind of
00:51:59more dink and dunk fashion with their offense through throws to guys like John O.
00:52:03Smith, who, again, are not going to run 40 yards down the field but can still function
00:52:08in this yards after catch type of offense.
00:52:10And then just to follow up, look, the Patriots secondary has not tackled well for most of
00:52:16the season.
00:52:17It's been a big issue.
00:52:18And they're smaller guys.
00:52:20You know, that that catch and run those run teams, you know, they give the Patriots secondary
00:52:26fits.
00:52:26So it's it's to me, it's not the best matchup, you know?
00:52:29Yeah, they have the ability to strike fast, but they can also kind of, you know, I think
00:52:35attack what was one of your biggest weaknesses, which I think is secondary tackling.
00:52:39Yep.
00:52:40Okay.
00:52:40My key, we go three matchups, two keys.
00:52:42It's very simple.
00:52:44Just get a freaking takeaway at one in the last five weeks.
00:52:50Can we get to two, please?
00:52:51That's it.
00:52:51Is that yours?
00:52:52That's my number one.
00:52:53Can we just can we can we you're saying just give me one takeaway.
00:52:57Pardon me.
00:52:58Can you just win the turnover battle?
00:53:00Can you just, I don't know, maybe be or draw at least give me a draw.
00:53:05You don't even have to win.
00:53:06Make it a draw.
00:53:07And I'd be happy.
00:53:08That's that's what I had to.
00:53:09But it's so it's so blatantly obvious that they are struggling in that department.
00:53:14It's the most boring key.
00:53:15It's the statistic most closely correlated with winning.
00:53:19And after that, it's explosive plays.
00:53:21And a couple of things are close.
00:53:22But I'm sorry.
00:53:24You just need to do better than one takeaway in five games or else we will see what we've
00:53:28seen close losses that you're asking your rookie quarterback to drag it back because
00:53:31your defense wasn't good enough.
00:53:32All right.
00:53:33We do a wild card thought this is supposed to be something adjacent to the game and not
00:53:37X's and O's out matchups, not keys.
00:53:39And I have stripped your freedom on the wild card thought I said, Ted, I want an old school
00:53:43Pat's Dolphins story from your playing days.
00:53:45And you can go whatever direction you want with this.
00:53:48You know, there's some great memories of my rookie year.
00:53:52I played the I started as a rookie.
00:53:55My first game as a pro was against the Cleveland Browns.
00:53:57We won in a kind of a last play.
00:54:00It was exciting kind of in, but it didn't hold like real strong memories with me.
00:54:04But the second week we played the Dolphins.
00:54:06And Dan Marino's it was the quarterback and they had a running back run off tackle and
00:54:11Dan didn't like the way he hit the hole.
00:54:13And he ripped that running back a new one.
00:54:16And I remember standing there almost in the Dolphins huddle.
00:54:20I was like, I couldn't believe I was watching Dan Marino undress his own player.
00:54:25That was a huge welcome to the NFL moment.
00:54:27I'll never forget.
00:54:28And then also, I was part of something something that happens against the Dolphins that none
00:54:34of us had ever seen.
00:54:36I split the helmet of the left guard Jamie Nails helmet in two pieces in the game against
00:54:42the Dolphins in December of 2003.
00:54:45And so that with all the linebackers, that is one of the core stories you'll ever hear
00:54:49them tell is me splitting the helmet of Jamie Nails.
00:54:53I had nicknames from the Dolphins and the Bills.
00:54:57Cement Head Ted and Ted the Head.
00:55:00And so but that that splitting of the helmet, you can find it online.
00:55:04It's a cool video of it literally just falling into two pieces.
00:55:08So that was those are two of my biggest Miami Dolphins memories.
00:55:11I love it.
00:55:12I have to go back and watch that 0-3 game because everyone remembers Teddy, you know,
00:55:15strutting into the end zone on that pick to seal the 12-0 win.
00:55:18Snow goes up in the air, beat the Dolphins.
00:55:21Great, great memory.
00:55:21All right, you've been more than gracious with your time.
00:55:24We'll get you out of here on this a game pick.
00:55:25I'm going to lead off.
00:55:27Everything says the Patriots will lose on Sunday.
00:55:30History says it.
00:55:31The spread says it.
00:55:32The talent, the coaching as of late.
00:55:35F that.
00:55:36This is a new era to me.
00:55:37I think this is the game that Drake May closes at the end, maybe not on the last drive,
00:55:41but in the last five minutes, all the ghosts, everything about Miami.
00:55:45It's not even going to be that hot out.
00:55:46It's not going to be loud out as Gerard Mayo called out Dolphins fans today.
00:55:49Drake May goes in.
00:55:50The Patriots win 21-20.
00:55:53I love your optimism, but I wish I could go there.
00:55:55No, I just defense scares the hell out of me.
00:55:58So I'm down on the defense.
00:55:59I have been for most of the year.
00:56:02I was excited about the Chicago game.
00:56:04But at the same time, I knew that that was a team you could do that to.
00:56:08So I just don't think our defense is going to hang in there with us.
00:56:13And so I feel like score, I don't know, can you hold them to 21 points?
00:56:20I could see maybe Drake getting more than 21.
00:56:23I just don't have trust in this defense to do it.
00:56:26So I got Miami kind of winning in the same fashion, almost like the Rams game, 28-23,
00:56:31something like that.
00:56:31I think Drake is going to get his, but I don't think it's going to be enough to overcome
00:56:36the issues and the problems that defense, I think, is going to inevitably have.
00:56:42Yeah, I totally get it.
00:56:43I think you're going to have a lot of company picking Miami, and I totally get why.
00:56:46All right, Marcus Jones is coming up.
00:56:48We have a four-minute drill with the third-year defensive back slash ball carrier.
00:56:53Zebra 25 is the name of his play I heard against the Rams.
00:56:56Maybe they'll run it again Sunday.
00:56:57If not, we will have Ted Johnson back much sooner than we did this week.
00:57:00I really appreciate you spending some time here, but it's always great hanging out with you.
00:57:03Bye, buddy.
00:57:04Good seeing you, Andrew.
00:57:05All right, another four-minute drill.
00:57:06Marcus Jones, I don't say this often, but there are certain interviews,
00:57:09even though you and I haven't chatted a whole lot,
00:57:11that I look forward to a little bit more than the rest
00:57:13because we got a lot of anonymous questions for teammates here.
00:57:16So I'm going to start the clock.
00:57:17We go.
00:57:17We can't run out the clock.
00:57:18We try to get through as many questions as we can.
00:57:20You ready?
00:57:20Let's get it.
00:57:21Let's get it.
00:57:21All right.
00:57:22Clock starts.
00:57:23Number one, if you could hit any teammate every single day in practice, who would that teammate be?
00:57:28Uh, I love Mandre, but I'll say Mandre.
00:57:32Number two, you're an artist, musical artist.
00:57:34Give us your best bar, the lyric you're proudest of the most in all your songs.
00:57:40In my song?
00:57:43That's a hard question right there.
00:57:46Oh my goodness.
00:57:48It has to be my song?
00:57:49Yes.
00:57:52See you dancing in a crowded room.
00:57:53I'm just going to say that because that's the first lyric of one of my songs, Make It Right.
00:57:56So that's the one that I could think of right now.
00:57:58All right.
00:57:58Best receiver you've ever faced?
00:58:00Devontae Adams.
00:58:02All right.
00:58:02I heard Marcus Jones hates to be wrong in meetings, about plays, anything, but you're
00:58:07a little quieter now when you object.
00:58:09How did you object as a rookie when you're pushing back and you knew you were wrong,
00:58:12but you just didn't want to admit it?
00:58:14It was just one of those situations to where, uh, you know, you learn to just get coached.
00:58:19It wasn't to where like, I didn't like to be wrong.
00:58:21It was just like, I want to explain why I did it.
00:58:24But sometimes, you know, you don't even need to explain.
00:58:27So you just need to go ahead and just take the coaching and just, you know, be quiet.
00:58:30Yeah.
00:58:31That's not how all teammates remember it, but you're on the pod level.
00:58:33We'll trust you here.
00:58:34Now, uh, your dad in your house, are you the good cop or the bad cop?
00:58:39Um, I'm the bad cop.
00:58:41So whenever I get to see him and everything, uh, usually I'm the person saying no most
00:58:46of the time.
00:58:46So yeah.
00:58:47All right.
00:58:48Uh, from an anonymous teammate, would you do a song?
00:58:50Would you collab with, uh, Kendrick Bourne?
00:58:52Oh, with KB?
00:58:53Yeah.
00:58:54Yeah, I would.
00:58:55I would.
00:58:55I would.
00:58:56It's in due time.
00:58:57So.
00:58:58Okay.
00:58:58What's your favorite play call?
00:59:00Favorite play call?
00:59:02Um, give us the words, how it spit out.
00:59:04Could be offense, defense, special teams.
00:59:05Okay.
00:59:06Um, I'll say defense.
00:59:08Uh, most of the time say cover too.
00:59:10Uh, I love whenever that call happens because most of the time we get to play the flat.
00:59:14So that's less energy we have to use.
00:59:16So you're looking to trap like a little quick out.
00:59:18You're looking for those, anything you can get your hands on.
00:59:19Whenever I could make the quarterback.
00:59:20Yeah.
00:59:21All right.
00:59:22In the past, when Marcus Jones broke up with someone, how would he deliver the news?
00:59:27Oh, uh, you can never do it over the phone.
00:59:30So I'm not going to say over the phone.
00:59:32Uh, how would I do it?
00:59:35I would prefer over the phone, but I can't do that.
00:59:38So, uh, basically in person and just basically tell them, Hey, uh, this, this isn't working
00:59:44out.
00:59:45It's not you as me, something like that.
00:59:47So something like that.
00:59:48So cliche, but like, at least you made the effort, like neutral site, you go to a coffee
00:59:52shop or like some bar or a restaurant.
00:59:55Yeah.
00:59:55It would have to be somewhere like that.
00:59:57Yeah.
00:59:57Okay.
00:59:58All right.
00:59:59You texted AVP.
01:00:00We just learned like an hour ago, uh, two weeks ago saying, Hey, like, you can give
01:00:04me the ball.
01:00:04You know, I can play some offense a little late in the week.
01:00:06Cause that was before the Chicago game.
01:00:08He looks up your plays from your rookie year and says, I'll get you in against the Rams.
01:00:11You go in on zebra 25.
01:00:13Can you tell us to the best of your knowledge what you texted AVP?
01:00:16What was the pitch you made to play some offenses here?
01:00:19Um, it was basically one of those situations to where I told him, I was just like, Hey,
01:00:23like, you know, I've played offense before.
01:00:25It wasn't like, get me the ball.
01:00:27It was just, it was more like, Hey, I'm open to offense.
01:00:30You know what I mean?
01:00:30So that ended up happening.
01:00:32And then I ended up getting some office snaps.
01:00:34How long did you be thinking about that text?
01:00:36Um, yeah, it hasn't been, I mean, I'll probably say since the off season of like, you know,
01:00:44you're a patient man.
01:00:45Yeah.
01:00:45I'm a patient guy.
01:00:46So whenever it came down to it, I was just like, Hey, I'm open to it.
01:00:49You know, if you're open to it, so.
01:00:51All right.
01:00:51We got 30 seconds left.
01:00:52Two more questions.
01:00:52Post apocalypse.
01:00:54Everyone's living in the wild, fighting for themselves.
01:00:55Who's the teammate least equipped to survive on their own?
01:01:00Oh, least equipped.
01:01:01I'm gonna say KB.
01:01:03He gets roasted on this show more than any person alive.
01:01:06I'm gonna definitely say KB just off the fact of like, I don't think he gonna know what
01:01:10to do at all.
01:01:11So.
01:01:12All right.
01:01:12Last one.
01:01:13Least favorite media question.
01:01:14Two and a half seasons in the NFL.
01:01:16You chat with us a fair amount.
01:01:16Least favorite media question.
01:01:18Um, I would say it would have to be, uh, when you guys usually ask what happened on the
01:01:26play, whenever someone scores or something like that.
01:01:29And then you guys kind of already know what you want to hear from our perspective.
01:01:32It's like, I mean, it's football, you know what I mean?
01:01:34People don't score as good players on the other team and everything like that as well.
01:01:37So, uh, sometimes you give us too much credit.
01:01:39We don't know.
01:01:40We need to ask you, but other times I'll tell you, you're right.
01:01:42Marcus Jones, four minute drill.
01:01:44Appreciate you, man.
