00:00Senator Dr R. A. Lingeshwaran has called on the Health Ministry to enhance the salary
00:08scheme for nurses to keep them in public hospitals.
00:12Lingeshwaran, a former director of Sungai Bakap Hospital, said nurses are the backbone
00:18of hospitals.
00:20He said losing the experienced ones, especially to the private sector and hospitals abroad,
00:26does not bode well for the country's healthcare system.
00:29Last week, Health Minister Zulkifli Ahmad told the Deewan Nagara that since 2014, 5,009
00:36staff nurses and 769 community nurses had either opted out or resigned from government
00:43service.
00:44Lingeshwaran proposed that their salary scheme be revised to include time-based promotions,
00:50as the 10 per cent critical allowance nurses receive is not enough to keep them in service.
00:56He also pointed out that promotional prospects for nurses are currently very limited, with
01:02very few higher positions as sisters and matrons available to them.
