00:00Lawyers and activists are urging the government to implement stricter laws against cyberbullying
00:07following the death of TikTok influencer A Rajeswari, also known as Aisha.
00:13Criminal lawyer R Sivananded said the absence of specific legislation makes cyberbullying
00:18seem like a minor offense. He suggested imposing a minimum jail sentence of six months to one
00:24year for cyberbullying to deter people from committing such acts.
00:29Alliance for a Safe Community chairman Lee Lam Tai also backed imposing imprisonment
00:34on offenders to send a strong message, saying a small fine is unlikely to be a deterrent
00:39to errant netizens.
00:41Meanwhile, lawyer Wan Azliana Wan Adnan said Malaysia can look to several countries for
00:47guidance on how best to frame the proposed new law.
00:51She said the US, UK, Japan and Australia all have specific acts on cyberbullying, while
00:57in Canada, the punishment for cyberbullying is having your devices taken away and jail
01:01time.
01:03Alternatively, Azliana said the government could enact an umbrella law to cover all forms
01:08of bullying, including cyberbullying.
