00:00James is walking on a downtown street one day, and he happens to see his old high school friend, Harry, a little ways up ahead.

00:07Harry! Harry! How are you?

00:10He greets his old buddy after getting his attention.

00:13Not so good, says Harry.

00:16Why? What happened? James queries.

00:20Well, Harry says, I just went bankrupt and I've still got to feed my family.

00:24I don't know what I'm going to do.

00:26Could have been worse, James replies calmly.

00:30Could have been worse.

00:32A month or so later, James again encounters Harry in a restaurant.

00:37And how are things now? He asks.

00:40Terrible, says Harry. Our house burned down last night.

00:44Could have been worse, says James, again with total aplomb and goes about his business.

00:50A month later, James runs into Harry a third time.

00:54Well, how goes it? He inquires.

00:57Oh, says Harry, things just get worse and worse.

01:01It's one tragedy after another.

01:03Now my wife has left me.

01:05Harry nods his head and gives his usual optimistic seeming little smile, accompanied by his usual words.

01:13Could have been worse.

01:15This time, Harry grabs James by the shoulders.

01:18Wait a minute, he says.

01:21I'm not going to let you off so easy this time.

01:23Three times in the past few months we've run into one another.

01:27And every time I've told you the latest disaster in my life, every time you say the same thing, could have been worse.

01:34This time, for God's sake, Harry, I want you to tell me, how in heaven's name could it have been any worse?

01:42James looks at Harry with the same little wisp of a smile.

01:46Could have been worse, he says.

01:49Could have happened to me.
